The story of your life is the hardest one to write
Annie McLean's struggling book shop has been saved by joining forces with the Pink Bean. Her wife, lesbian romance author Jane Quinn, finds her quiet life and steady routine challenged by the introduction of the Pink Bean and its many colourful characters. Both her mind and body seem to be struggling with the new situation.
While Jane figures out how to navigate and adjust to the many changes affecting her, Annie has developed more than a keen interest in Pink Bean owner Kristin.
What happens when a long and enduring relationship is put to the test? Can Annie and Jane rescue their marriage and in the process find themselves, and each other, again?
Find out in this new installment of best-selling lesbian romance author Harper Bliss' Pink Bean series. Every book in this series can be read as a stand-alone without having read the others.
Harper Bliss is a best-selling lesbian romance author. Among her most-loved books are the highly dramatic French Kissing and the often thought-provoking Pink Bean series. She is the co-founder of My LesFic, a weekly newsletter offering discount deals on lesbian fiction.
Harper lived in Hong Kong for 7 years, travelled the world for a bit, and has now settled in Brussels (Belgium) with her wife and photogenic cat, Dolly Purrton.
Together with her wife, she hosts a weekly podcast called Harper Bliss & Her Mrs.
Lovely, gentle read about two woman who have been together for 20 years. No relationship is ever smooth sailing and Bliss delves into some of the problems in a beautifully realistic way. Annie's bookshop is doing well since the Pink Bean added a coffee kiosk to the shop. With Pink Bean owner Kristin's regular visits to the shop, Annie finds she's developing a crush on her. Jane, Annie's wife, is going through some of her own issues and the strain in their relationship starts showing.
I found this a little slower than the other books in the Pink Bean series but I think the pace suited the story. It also felt more down to earth than those that have gone before. Well worth reading.
Wow, what a fantastic read. I have to say I was not expecting this storyline to be so touching and at times extremely poignant. I couldn't put it down from start to finish.
Jane is a famous Lesbian Fiction Author who spends most of her life in her own head with expansive and emotive thoughts. Jane likes life the way it is and doesn't take kindly to change so when her wife, Annie turns their quiet book shop into a book shop plus busy coffee shop it shakes Janes equilibrium, especially when their home and Janes study is about the store.
After some initial concern, Annie no longer has to worry about her coffee shop being bought by a large chain. Fortunately Kirsten and Sheryl came up with a idea in the nick of time by adding a coffee shop to the book store. But there is something about Kirsten that Annie can't get her head around. She's smart savvy and incredible sexy... Could this be a little harmless crush? Or is there such a thing.
What a great premise to drive what turns out to be a wonderful love story. At times I thought wow, this is extremely raw and real, these are the actual feelings and emotions of how anyone in this situation would be feeling but then to throw more in the fire and have an even further back-story to add to the mix just made the story more prominent.
I think this might be one of my favourite series. Harper Bliss keeps finding ways to adapt and evolve these characters and with every story adds a new element that brings you closer to these women.
I didn't particularly like the 6th book of the Pink Bean series but not for the reasons people would assume. This book is about a person emotionally cheating on her wife and while I can't imagine such a storyline appealing to the masses, I didn't have much of an issue with that part. In fact, my thoughts while reading this was that what Annie and Jane went through as a long term couple might be a realistic scenario and I like that they were able to work through the unhappiness and jealously and rediscover the passion for each other.
What I did not find appealing however, were the characters themselves. Both Jane and Annie were not terribly interesting characters and I honestly found it hard to get emotionally invested in their marriage because of this.
All in all, I thought it wasn't a particularly interesting book.
Well, Bliss has done it again. Another successful instalment of the Pink Bean series. This one has a slightly different feel to it. This one is about a couple who are in a long term relationship and not just meeting.
Annie and Jane are the book shop owners who have recently had the Pink Bean coffee shop sublet in their store. Hence saving them. This was put into motion at the end of book 5. Mia as the manager. Remember? Good!
Annie works in the store and often comes into contact with the employees and owners of the coffee shop. Jane is a well published lesbian fiction writer. Annie is definitely the outgoing one. Jane despite her fame is pretty insular and hates the limelight. She also struggles in social settings.
So, question? Is it cheating if you develop a crush? Bliss covers this topic with sensitivity. I found the dialogue repetitive in places. But I'm glad I didn't review this book immediately. I went to bed and thought about it. I can honestly say that in a relationship we are often repetitive. Rehashing old hurts and confirming commitment. So, I felt differently.
This is an excellent continuation of the Pink Bean series and I'm looking forward to number 7. Enjoy!
Review of No Other Love by Harper Bliss, Audiobook narrated by Angela Dawe
This is book 6 of the Pink Bean series which follows the lives of a group of lesbians, workers, or patrons of the Pink Bean café in Sidney, Australia. Most of the books in the series can be read/listened to as standalone, though there are always mentions of characters from other books. However, this novel is very intertwined with book 5 Water Under Bridges and I recommend reading that one first.
Annie McLean is the owner of a feminist bookstore that was saved by joining forces with the Pink Bean café. She’s been together with her wife, lesbian romance author Jane Quinn, for twenty years but they are both struggling with different issues. Annie is confused by her growing attraction to her business partner Kristin, while Jane is struggling with an acute case of writer’s block. Will their relationship survive the storm?
Once again I’m surprised by the level of depth of this series. I’m not sure why, maybe the covers or the series title suggests to me a lightness that cannot be found here. I love that Harper Bliss writes about conflicts that most romance authors don’t dare to talk about but are quite common in real life. In this book, Ms. Bliss deals with long-term relationship issues such as loss of passion, attraction to someone else, and work-related stress. As these are two mature women in their 50s, it also deals with menopause and how it affects life in general and relationships in particular. Everything is dealt with realistically and compassionately.
Mia Miller, one of the main characters in book 5, makes an appearance in this installment as a very important secondary character. I mentioned in my review of book 5, that the ending felt a bit rushed, but this novel finally ties those loose knots. Mia not only acts as a buffer between her boss Kristin and Annie but also as a soundboard to Jane. It’s really good to see such character growth and finishes her full circle towards redemption.
No Other Love isn’t a light romance; the reader is in the headspace of both very conflicted leads who are fighting their own very real demons despite their goodwill to face their problems and overall honesty. This shows that relationships are hard work, however, it also demonstrates that if both partners are willing to communicate and compromise, there is a way forward. I’m glad that the author didn’t fall into the temptation of solving the issues magically and even though this is a romance and has to have a positive ending, the conflict resolution sounded plausible.
Angela Dawe narrated the audiobook version, as most of the series, which gives it a fantastic added value. Once again, a standing ovation for her awesome performance confirming she’s one of the best in lesfic. This series is particularly difficult because it has so many important female characters but Ms. Dawe manages to make distinct voices for them all. I loved the emotional charge that she added to the written text which made it so much enjoyable. As audiobook 10 has been recently released with her narration, it’s a good chance to indulge in her outstanding talent. 4.5 stars.
Annie and Jane are not your typical lesbian romance leads. For starters, they’re already married to each other. And secondly, Jane is 45 and Annie is 57. It’s so refreshing to see some of the realistic challenges they faced, like attraction to someone who isn’t your wife and the physical effects of perimenopause. Even more refreshing was seeing an explicit sex scene with a character who’s nearing 60. Seriously, brava to Harper Bliss, because we need more characters like these in lesfic.
As usual, this is another well-written and deeply emotional book. This time Harper Bliss has chosen to explore marital fidelity or infidelity. Jane and Annie, owners of the bookstore that welcomed Pink Bean, have a patch of insecurity when Annie develops a crush on Kristen. She still loves Jane but finds Kristen enticing. Everyone but Jane can see the infatuation.
The plot builds slowly as Bliss explores the inner minds and feelings of both Jane and Annie. It all comes to a head when Jane finally becomes aware of this crush. There’s some back and forth between the two, blame, anguish, self-recriminations and so on.
It was an interesting read for me because of the focus on Jane’s process as a writer. I'm always curious about writers' processes. But beyond that, the book held my attention and transported me once again to the world of the Pink Bean folks.
3.75 stars - Another great book in The Pink Bean series :) This one is about an established couple who are going through a rough patch in their marriage. Great characters and believable plot. Mrs. Bliss hasn't disappointed me yet
This story is told in third person and from dual point-of-view, which allows readers to get into the heads of both leading ladies.
As always, when picking up a book written by Harper Bliss, her characters are three dimensional and believable.
This story is a long-slow burn, and I don't mean that in a sexual way. But don't panic, Harper rounds the story off with a spicy scene fitting of the leads.
The story touches on many topics, women over forty, age-gap, and writers block. But what eclipses everything else is the very real issue of suddenly finding yourself crushing on another, despite being so called happily married for twenty years.
It's a topic that the author delves into at length exploring not only how each protagonist deals with their inner turmoil, but how a couple gets through, and past, such a dilemma.
As a reader who has read, and followed Harper for a number of years, I couldn't help but wonder how much of this story reflected her own life. Ironically, just as I wondered such, her heroine summed it up with these words, "nothing was ever fully made-up, just as nothing was ever literally drawn from her life."
Another thing I enjoyed immensely about this story is that it touched on the topic of perimenopause and how that not only affects an individual but the impact it can have on a relationship.
Lovers of this series are bound to find a lot to like about this instalment. And those who haven't read the first five books shouldn't let that deter them from picking up this standalone story.
What a refreshing read. The main characters are older, married, and settled (or are they). While reading, I thought about long term relationships and expectations. As you settle into a relationship it is naive to think people do not change. Change can come in various forms. For example, in this read, Annie McLean appears to be committed to her wife and to her successful bookstore business. Jane Quinn appears to be committed to her wife and being a successful lesbian author. They have established a routine and from the outside, they look to be a happily married couple. Then, Kristin appears and change in the form of a challenge infiltrates their life.
The read focuses on how they respond which is what fascinated me the most. I appreciated how both Jane and Annie dealt with the challenge to their marriage. Although a slow read, in my opinion, in no way did that hinder the story.
No Other Love by Harper Bliss is a refreshing lesbian romance novel, starring a couple who has been together for years, proving all relationships, no matter the length, need constant attention to flourish.
Wow, what a fantastic read. I have to say I was not expecting this storyline to be so touching and at times extremely poignant. I couldn't put it down from start to finish.

Once again Harper has written a great book. It's astounding to me how her words pulled me in once again. It was a beautiful well written story. I can't wait to see what happens next. Thank you Harper Bliss for your awesomeness
Book 6 in the Pink Bean series explored the relationship of Annie and Jane who have been together over 20 years. This one was equal parts heavy and heart-warming because it was a great illustration on how even fairly large bumps in the road can be overcome when you trust in your love for each other. A pet peeve of mine in books is when people give up so easily. Maybe they end up back together eventually but I can't ever understand that moment they abandon everything they have together. In this book, there is no abandonment. There's anger, maybe there's jealousy, but they don't abandon. They work. They love.
Once again Harper has reintroduced background characters and brought the relationship under scrutiny in this 6 the book. I loved the story and I found the subject diffcult too . I thoroughly recommend this book for everyone and especially those who are in long term relationships. Thanks Harper
This book is a different type of romance book. And to be honest, it made me realize I prefer reading the slow burn first love stories. Maybe I'm speaking from my perspective as a divorced person, but this one didn't do it for me.
This was a refreshing read, although I didn't take well to the character of Jane much. To be able to read a romance about two mature women who had already been together for twenty years and were still able to reignite their relationship. I found the story very realistic and certainly not a bit sugary, which some romances can be. I must admit there were a couple of times when the reading got tough, but I read on and was grateful that I did. As I said, I couldn't really warm to Jane, but felt some empathy with Annie, liked the side characters too of Mia, Kirstin and co. Will certainly read more of Harper's books.
Harper Bliss never fails to draw me into her stories and Jane and Annie's story is no different. The love and patience I see as I delve into their lives makes me have hope for an amazing love story for myself.
No Other Love by Harper Bliss is a brilliant and lovely new romance novel from her Pink Bean Series. Annie McLean, a struggling bookshop owner, and her wife, lesbian romance author Jane Quinn are navigating and adjusting to the many changes in their long and enduring relationship. It’s a journey filled with courage to happily ever after, stories that Harper writes so well.
No Other Love is the sixth book in the Pink Bean Series, set in and around a coffee shop in Sydney Australia. You can read this sixth book in the series as a standalone book without any issues. The minor characters from one book are featured in the next one, and their stories are brought to life.
Other novels in the series are: No Strings Attached (Volume 1), a brilliant coming-out-later-in-life romance novel. Beneath the Surface (Volume 2), a deeply moving romance novel about true love. Everything Between Us (Volume 3), a tender romance novel about believing in yourself. This Foreign Affair (Volume 4), a sweet but moving novel about a long-distance romance. Water Under Bridges (Volume 5), a moving romance novel about a long-forgotten but profoundly traumatizing experience and the road to forgiveness.
Pink Bean is by far my favorite series by HB. I love the growing cast of characters introduced with each new book. More importantly, I'm awed how each one is not just the continuation of a series but that they all tackle a unique topic to contemplate. In book 6, we examine a relationship that is already 20 years underway and the way in which it is preserved and further strengthened when life presents hurdles to overcome. This is a nice change from the majority of books out there that are all about a couple meeting, falling in love and finishing with a metaphorical "and they lived happily ever after" once they get together. I enjoyed it immensely. I am always impressed with the way HB illustrates a wide ranges of emotion from her characters that feel so true to life. The dialogue between characters is always authentic. I also appreciate that her books are well edited and I can be pulled into her stories rather than distracted by grammatical errors and such that too many e-books are riddled with. HB definitely stands out as a truly talented author, and I'll read anything she publishes without hesitation. I'm looking forward to next year's releases.
This story about Annie, the owner of the book store that recently partnered with The Pink Bean to open a second location, and her best-selling, slightly autobiographical seeming, lesbian romance author wife Jane has a very introspective feeling to it. Similar to the second book in the series, it is about a couple who has been together for twenty years, but instead of detailing their relationship from the beginning, the story sticks to dealing with how an established couple deals with problems in their relationship, only relating the events of the past through discussion about it instead of flashbacks. I found this to make the story flow extremely well. Overall it is an excellent book.
WOW! Harper Bliss puts out another wonderful book. You feel like you are sitting in Annie’s Book Store watching your friends come and go. Excellent read. Beautifully written.
Wow Annie and Jane are the newest edition to the Pink Bean family and boy what a pair they are. They been married for a while but been together longer. Here we see they go through something that I myself have gone through and Harper has put it in words where I understood that we are human beings and only the real love of many years can overcome certain feelings for others. I hope I have peeked your curiosity and you read this series. LOVED IT !!!
As always I enjoyed this book. The theme of infidelity, fantasizing and the depth of feelings...searching and finally realizing that there is no other love. The crew in Anni's bookshop/Pink Bean coffee shop are just very likable characters...never a boring moment! A very recommendable book.
Very entertaining love story. Jane and Annie have been together for twenty years. They are a truly amazing couple and so much in love. But they have a couple bumps in the road as with most long term relationships. Lots of love with a great ending.
What a wonderful story, very exciting to follow all my favorite Pink Bean ladies. It's so easy to read when the characters are so lovable. I look forward to reading more of her works. She extremely talented and will never let you down.
I have immensely enjoyed the Pink Bean Series! This story was beautifully woven and the characters feel like you have known them for years. I would love to have coffee with all the characters of this Series!
