But Heather's two older brothers have always teased and bullied the two, especially Hope. Luckily, Hope manages too avoid them for a couple of years while they are away at college.
But when Hope moves closer to her friend, she finds out the two are returning and will have no chance of avoiding them forever.
What would happen if you fall for your best friends brother?
Born in Lincoln, England in 1985, M J Thompson now aged twenty nine, is the third born child of her mother's and forth of her father's. With four older siblings, three sister and one brother and four younger, again three sister and one brother, she was never short of company.
Growing up she went through many phase's, including to want to be a mechanic, a historian and a midwife. Her only constant dream was of becoming a published author. In school her favorite lesson was always English literature. Always creative she was often praised for her story telling in school and often spent time when she time with her friends and siblings sharing her stories.
After finishing school she spent her time traveling around England.
Marrying her long term partner Pawel in December 2011, he always encouraged her writing and helped with proof reading when needed. Around the same time she discovered a the website Wattpad, a large community of readers and writers. With many idea's for stories and often getting inspired by the slighted thing this was a good place for her to publish her works for millions to read and also read which is one of her favorite past times. Her other past times include watching Korean, Japanese drama's, movies, Anime and reading Manga comic's, some of which inspired some of her writings. She also enjoys playing video games, walking and spending time with her family, friends and pets.
Her reading also inspired her youngest sister to read and publish stories on the site. On this site is where she first was approached by a publicist to publish one of her stories to a wider audience.
Ok decent story but the horrriible grammar made me want to stop reading. Seriously? Was there any editing done at all? I'm sorry if I hurt the author's feelings but come on.
Why does this book have such good reviews? I actually got to chapter 8 and had to stop reading. It was poorly written, had bad grammar and so awkward to read. Feels like it was written by a 12 year old.
Some people like it and some people don't. It's just a matter of opinion.
I'm one of those people who don't. If it's any consolation, I did gave this book a chance. And I really tried to finish this, but it just wasn't that easy for me. I had to abandoned it after Chapter 9.
This book has big tendency to be a good and fun read. I do like the plot, it's what intrigues me to go get a copy. But after few sentences in Prologue, I was hit with grammatical errors. I brush it off thinking 'its one of those slip-ups' but few more sentences there it is again then another and another until every page I flipped consists of one or more errors. Then there's the spelling errors. I do hope it was just spelling errors when she wrote the word 'no' which I think really means 'know' and 'through' is really 'threw'. Those errors made me uncomfortable which borders to annoyance. Like a nail scraping a blackboard, I couldn't help but wince every time I read one. (Yes. I'm one of those people who couldn't help but mentally correct every grammar I think is wrong. I'm not saying I am an expert with grammar--I'm so far from it--but there's just this 'feeling' that I get when I read a badly phrase sentence and it kept me from enjoying the story.)
But I am not going to put all the blame on the author. If I read this on wattpad, I would understand all those typos, wrong grammars and bad phrasing.
Wattpad is like a cave full of gemstone, you'll definitely find a beautiful yet still unpolished gem. Plucked it, put it under a thorough process of polishing its rough edges and with guidance from proper people, the unpolished gem could be-if not perfect-something that people will find beautiful.
And those people who finds unpolished gems are what I called publisher.
It's sad to know that the publisher of this book didn't thoroughly undergone the polishing process that will make this novel into something that would put smiles to the readers face while or after reading the book.
I am clueless as to how publishing company make novels appealing to readers. But as far as I know there should be a proofreader and an editor that check and edit the raw/unpolished copy of an author's book.
So yes! I blame most of this to the publisher for letting this kind of badly written novel out on the market. Just think of the money spent buying a copy of this book and felt like you've been cheated. The blame I could point to the author is "Why did you let this book published like this? It's your name on the line woman." There's this people called beta-readers who would help you edit the book. They will help you with the your writing style, tackle with you the tips to improve your story and develop your characters which is a must if you want your book to make an impression to the readers specially the picky one. ( \o/ = Me raising both hands.)
It might prevent you from ranting readers.
Like me! This is my rant. And hopes to avoid crossing with another could-be-good-but-poorly-written books-that-I-have-to-abandon.
PS. It wasn't my intention to offend people with my rant. Like I said, this is just a matter of opinion, and this is mine. So whomever felt uncomfortable with what I said, I ask for your forgiveness and understanding. I would also love for you to refrain from any bad comments.
PPS. I'm no expert in writing. So putting my thoughts into words is a struggle for me. There might be grammar errors somewhere in this review that makes some people cringe and I accept that.
We're all humans where everyday is a process of growing and learning.
Even after reading all the bad reviews for this book, I really wanted to check this out myself and I thought that it wouldn’t be that bad because the synopsis sounded really cute and also this being a wattpad story piqued my interest more to read it. Besides fantasy, sometimes I enjoy reading sweet, cute and fluffy contemporary romance books too but I really hate it if it has too much sweetness with awkward romance and this one contained too much of it. I agree that it was cute read but I felt that it was some cute cheesy romance written by some middle grader and I’ve read better books than this in Wattpad. Another major issue with this book was the poor editing, there are too many grammatical errors and spellings mistakes to ignore and they really made it so annoying for me to read cause you could find them in all the pages. With this much of issues in the book I’m quite astonished how it was possible for this to be published. The writing style of this book was also terrible. The main characters in this plot are 17 and 18 year olds but they acted more like 14 year olds. The romance in it was so awkward that it didn’t seemed realistic and it has too many Clichés that I really had to skip some pages. The plot really has some potential but it was poorly executed and the story was already finished at the first half of the book and the remaining second half was pointless it contained all the lovey dovey stuff with some drama between the couple until the boy finally leaves for the college after he proposes her with a promise ring and finally the end.I can’t believe how some readers could actually give this book more than 3 stars rating. This book totally deserves to be DNF’ed but I don’t leave books unfinished so after some major skipping of pages, I have finally finished reading it. Overall, this book utterly failed in everything I mean with the plot, characterization and the writing too.
Chapter 'four', really chapter three, is where I have to stop.
Sorry for hating on this book, but it is possibly the worst written YA book I've ever read. Has any editing been done? There are so many grammar mistakes and misspellings.
The second chapter is a repeat of the first chapter written from a different perspective except that in the second chapter, extra dialogue has been added. It should either been in the first chapter as well or not at all in the second chapter.
After chapter two, it skips to chapter four. Where's chapter three?
There's also many unclear parts. It's like one minute, you understand it to be that she has her house to herself, and the next, she's living with her sister.
There is virtually no description about anything. The place, the characters. I could imagine them all with black hair and someone else could imagine them bald. There should at least be a little description. I'm sorry for being so harsh, but my ten year old self could have written this story better.
There's also a lot of problems with the tenses. It's all written in past tense but then some moments are written in present tense. It's one or the other, not both.
I'm being nice giving this story one star. I don't know how it was published and why it has so many great reviews.
i wish there was a rating lower than one star. this is by far the worst book I've read. It was creepy and extremely unrealistic, NO ONE ACTS LIKE THAT! i found the characters to be extremely cheesy and i kind of wished that they didn't end up together because that would have made this book worth reading. It is a struggle to get through this book and it has absolutely no pay out in the end, two teenagers falling in love aww cute but one teenager falling in love with a kid who pored hot sauce on her head because he "liked" her is basically Stockholm syndrome! All the references to DIRTY DANCING were so predictable and lack luster, We get it she likes dirty dancing! But the worst thing about it was the fact that the author took a lot of things you shouldn't joke about and basically made complete laughing stocks I.E. Stocking, Having a brain tumor, being gay, being transgender, sex fetishes and interracial relationships. I do not recommend reading this!
Entertaining enough in terms of a quick, easy read with a feel-good plot; however, it is (incredibly) badly edited and had one passage that was transphobic, even though I don't think the author intended that.
I am not rating this even half a point. First page pissed me off. I don't know how a writer writes should "of" or would "of" instead of "have" my 6 year old has better grammar than that.
How did this book get 3 stars??? Unoriginal story, forgettable characters and atrocious grammar. Did this book even have an editor? Couldn't get past the first 2 pages.
WARNING: PEOPLE WHO LOVE THIS BOOK: DO NOT READ THIS, AND IF YOU DO NOT LOVE THIS BOOK, THEN READ THIS.
The only thing I can say for this book- Pointless, completely and utterly pointless.
* THE WRITING STYLE: Just.... NO. I mean seriously, its like it was written by a 10 year old. A ten year old with bad grammar who cannot spell properly. 'Know' is spelt as 'no' and I am assuming that the author meant 'threw' instead of 'through'. Not only that but, the main characters in this book are teenagers but they seem unable to cut down their sentences shorter. What teenagers always say 'do not' or 'will not' or 'it is' for an entire 450 page book? At least once in the book they should say 'won't' or 'don't' or 'it's'. But do they, NO.
*THE CHARACTERS: Most of the characters were so stupid I could not believe that they were nearly 18 or above the age of 18. Seriously, most of the time their minds worked like little kids, not adults.
An example of the character's stupidity:
Also, the way the characters are written just make them seem so stupid(sorry if I'm using this word a lot). The way the author has written the POVs of make characters, they sound more feminine then male, this just ruins everything.
*THE TITLE- The title is 'My Best Friend's Brother' this title refers to maybe somebody loving their best friend's brother and not wanting to say anything because he is her best friend's brother and all)or something like that). Did this book have that, No. Actually, after the first few chapters of the book the best friend was barely mentioned, its like everyone forgot about her. I just think that the title could have been a bit better, especially since the best friend had 3 brothers.
Anyway, sorry for the long review, if you like this book then I'm sorry but this is only my opinion and I just wanted to put it out there and rant about this seemingly pointless book. However, the story line was OK (the only reason why I gave it 2 stars instead of one)
I don't even know how this was published, and after it was published the publisher should have at least fixed the grammatical errors.
Honestly this book was okay I guess? I think the story was alright if a bit unrealistic. The grammar now, that's horrible. I won't admit to being an english major but the writing in this story is absolutely terrible. Sentences like " That was so freakingly funny" and " We will be back on the road when we finished with you." also " Waiting for the moment Ricky to put me down" were just a few of the errors I noticed right off the bat. I understand that with ebooks a lot of authors are self publishers but this was ridiculous. There was at least an error per page. When it comes to the characters I felt like the author tried to make Hope and Nate have too many personalities. Nate was supposed to be some big time player but at the drop of a hat he was incredibly insecure and shy. I understand people have their moments where they feel insecure but it felt like the author sat there and flipped a coin to decide how Nate would act in a particular scene. There were also times where Hope would do this. After they're together in a relationship, knowing they love each other she's worried he won't come to her birthday party. The minor characters were flat and it felt like they would only pop up now and again. Not only was there horrible grammar and okay characters but the writing itself wasn't done well. The way she wrote this book she would switch character points of view and write the name of who's point of view it was. About 3/4 of the way through it's in hopes point of view then for a paragraph it's Nate's then back to Hope. It's like the author didn't even go back and edit the book. There is also a section near the beginning where Hope's sister ask her and Ricky (their brother) to be godparents of the baby that hasn't been born yet. Towards the end of the book Hope talks about how her sister asked her to be a godparent after the baby is born. It's nearly the exact same wording put in at two different times and its like the first one never happened. I honestly believe the author never once went back and actually read the story.
These were all mistakes that were absolutely fixable if the author has gone back through and read the novel.
The thing is that I figured this book probably wasn't going to be very good but I read it anyway. I read it because there were so many poor reviews from people who didn't finish it. I just think that is unfair. How do you know it didn't get better? I felt compelled to give it a shot even though I was skeptical.
Unfortunately, in the case of this book, reading the whole thing didn't really help. In fact, it probably hurt a bit. There were a few reasons I didn't care for it.
First, what I assumed was the problem of the story was resolved by about 30% and after that, there isn't really a point to the story. For the last 70% they have a few semi-romantic moments, they gush about their feelings, they tease each other, worry that the other will leave them and then gush some more. And the conclusion is pretty much the opposite of closure. Of course, if you do read the whole thing, you can always read the "alternate ending" book for closure. It isn't really an alternate end. It is just an end. It pretty much picks up where this one left off and jams 6 years into 30 page. Though to be fair most of the pages happen in one day.
Second, the writing quality was pretty poor. I mean really. I'm not just talking about editing mistakes. This author is missing some writing basics like beginning, middle and end, show don't tell, focusing on small meaningful moments while skipping over the boring parts, and continuity. It read like she kept changing her mind about the direction she was taking the characters and "plot" but didn't feel like revising the story so she just make some lame excuse for the change or hoped the reader would forget what she had written earlier. Yes, I get that what I'm saying is pretty harsh but let's face it, not everyone is cut out to be a writer and somethings just shouldn't be published.
If you want to become a book editor, then this book will give you all the practice you need. There were way too many errors grammatical and spelling wise. There was not one paragraph without a mistake. The word 'whilst' was on every other page and it's not even a good word. The storyline was a good idea, but not executed! What was the point of having her best friend's brothers be bullies when she was in love with one of them and the bullying storyline was never continued on. Also the scar on the back of Hope's neck, well how did it get there??? The characters were completely immature. Hope was going into her senior year of high school and Nate was practically proposing at the end, like let her finish puberty. Nate's nicknames for Hope, such as sweet pea, were soo annoying and sickening call her Hopie that at least sounds better. Their relationship was built over a day and they were both very insecure about it, one joke and they were I'm soo sorry I love you, don't break up with me! Like chill it was a joke. Ricky was acting like an ex-boyfriend or a cop not a brother, he was way to overprotective like back off. There was no point to having Dean be sick besides adding a little drama so Nate could break up with Hope. Stupid, if you are going to give him a brain tumor elaborate! I love the movie Dirty Dancing, but in this book they took loving it to obsessing over it! Watching it, then going to the lake, then dressing and preforming the last scene in the movie, then getting her the leather jacket he wore in the movie? Like come on!!! This book was just not good!
I just want to start off saying that I have a personal rule, when I start a book I always finish it. Regardless how painful or terrible it is to get to the end I ALWAYS FINISH. To put this in perspective for you in my life time (24 years) I have finished every book except for three. This book will now be placed on the DNF list unfortunately. I think this book had a great story line; however it was completely unrealistic. I didn't felt like this was a story about something that did/could actually happen. It seemed more like something thing a middle school-er who had a crush on her best friends brother fantasized would happen when she got older.
I also hated the switching between the different character's point of view. This works in some books but typically between two characters and not every character. Typically this is used to get the other character perspective on the larger picture. What this author did was retell the same 10 min time span 4 different ways that were completely the same. For example. When Dean walked up to her car the second time we already knew he was upset by Nate's admission to be in love with Hope, because Nate's character described the glare and look of hatred in Dean's eye why did we need to have Dean tell us the same thing he already knew.
Overall this book was poorly written. I hope next time the author gets an agent or a book editor to help with errors as well as help the book flow together better.
This book had promise with the plot but it fell short on delivery. It should have stayed on Wattpad until it had gone through an extensive review and a professional edit. It reads awkwardly and has extensive grammar errors. I had it on my archived books in Wattpad waiting for the author to finish it. She not only took about 6 months to do so, she then proceeded to decide to publish it and leave the Wattpad version incomplete. Making the readers waiting for its completion - like myself - have to buy the book in order to read it fully once and for all. If the author had turned out a clean edited version the money might have been well spent, I'm sure. But I feel jipped! I don't mind reading books like this one onlive for free, but if I'm going to spend money then I expect good quality. This was money and time wasted!!! I just hope she doesn't do the same with the other books I'm waiting for her to finish before starting reading them. :-(
The book felt like documented musings of a little girl (12-13 age maybe) of what goes on in the head of a little girl when she is dreaming about a certain boy she fancies. while this is not necessarily wrong basis for a book, it seems from the story and the writing that taking professional guidance may help. The book doesn't look like it has been reviewed even once. And the grammar is alien coz it's not something you hear everyday - 'and as we were sat in the room.' all in all an utterly disappointing read considering the 5.99 I had to shell out.
I first read this on Wattpad. But bought it in not only support to this author but to be able to reread it again. This is a YA story about Hope who has a crush/love interest in her best friend older brother. And the trauma she endured when he and his twin pulled way too many pranks when they were younger. Now she is just days away from her eighteenth birthday and they reconnect after several years absence. Will they get together or has there been too much pain involved? Has Nate a chance or will his younger brother get the girl? Again this was a sweet romance that was not a deep read but an enjoyable look at young romance.
I read this back when it was still free on Wattpad. To be honest I kept reading hoping that it would get better but it didn't really happen. The story itself was decent but like everyone else mentioned the grammar was definitely lacking. From what I remember this was published through an actual publisher so I'm having a hard time understanding why it wasn't edited... like at all. If you see a book on Amazon you'd assume it would be edited and at the best it could be.
This book had a lot of potential to be good I found out about this book on an app called wattpad. The author I think might have self published the book hence why there is so many errors and not developed properly. I am only half way through and most likely won't finish it seeing as how it seems pretty predictable and I don't like the creepy brother dean at all. However, props to MJ Thompson on getting this published and getting this on goodreads, amazon and kindle.
Will give this 3 star coz the story is terrific but the grammar is TERRIBLE! Love the story line, love Hope & her friendship with Heather but for a girl who's so close to her brother, it's weird that she didn't know which college he was at or that her best friend's brothers were at the same school. Otherwise, loved the story, I just wonder how this book got published with such terrible grammar. Maybe there's an edited version?
While the storyline was cute you had to read a lot of unnecessary things over again because it was one of those stories that goes from one person to the next person in the thoughts or their version of what happened only was exactly what you just read from the other person.
Overall the story was cute in a Tweeny kind of way. Not really my thing if you're not into young adult stories it's probably not good for you.
Awful grammar. made it difficult to read. Basic story was ok but just not wrote very well, read the same story from different authors that were much better and a lot cheaper. Some parts to rushed no depth to it , for us to fall for the characters. Glad I didn't pay for book as its not worth the price that it is down as. Not sure if I could read another of the authors books
This was very painful to read, but I stuck with it and even in the end I couldn't shake off the feeling that I had wasted my time. No to Slut Shaming and Insecure and one dimensional characters, the plot was there but the execution was off- definitely in need of some more editing work. Choppy sentences that don't make any sense are not my thing...
Did anyone even edit this book?... Terrible use of grammar and spelling errors, throughout the entire book which made it hard to read. I bought this book thinking it was going to be a good read, I am highly disappointed it is probably the worst book I have ever read.
I LOVE THIS BOOK. YOUR AMAZING!!!! And i cant believe your being published thats soo awesome i started reading it while on wattpad and fell in love instantly. Keep writing because your a great writer and id love to keep readng books from you!!
I loved the concept of the story, but there was so many things she repeatedly said over and over in the book and acted like it was a new development. The book has many mistakes and as much as I like Nate. She makes him into a total girl!
