The Dragon Star has chosen again - and this time, it must be mistaken.
Lily is off to an elf wedding with her friends, which might be a fate worse than death. So she thinks - until she sticks her fingers in the water of a river far from home. What she finds will change her life and challenge the bravest dragons she knows.
And might involve some accidental dragon soup.
Dragon Lily & Oceana is book two of a new fantasy series for readers of all ages. If you love dragons, ordinary heroes, and bravery that has to be earned one day at a time, we hope you’ll give Dragon Kin a try!
I really liked this book a lot. It builds on the world building from the first book and adds an interesting new dimension to the world. Like the first book, the story has interesting characters and a quickly moving storyline with great world building.
When I started this book, I wasn't paying attention to who wrote it, the cover art intrigued me. A long time ago I used to picked books by cover art, looking for a writer that I liked (back in the 70s). The caliber of writers back then can't be compared to writers now and that's a good thing! The suspense when reading the first 2 chapters was thick. I really like that in a book, makes me want to read more to find out why. Andrey Faye is great at putting out that kind of hook! I have read more from her, and she never disappoints. I hope she hurries up with the next in this series ... I'm still intrigued.
Audrey Faye is on my wall list of people to read and check in with. Can't let the good ones go ....
Sometimes heroes don't have big muscles or breathe fire. Sometimes they are small with battered hearts and thick skin, used to being overlooked and forgotten. This is the story of two such heroines whose kin bond is a surprise to both and whose chosen status by the Dragon Star is something Lily, at least, can't help but doubt. A tale of facing your fears and of becoming a part of a clan, Audrey's latest is a wonderful addition to her growing Dragon Kin series. I thoroughly enjoyed Lily and Oceana's part of the saga and look forward eagerly to the next book!
OMG! This story just keeps getting better and better! The characters are as real as anyone could make them, both elves and dragons! The plot makes any sane person, laugh out loud, and cry at the next moment. Yes, I am old man, but even the young with heart would love this book, and the one before it. I cannot stress just how highly I recommend this series.
If you want a joyful and hopeful book, this is it! I also want to start off by saying this is a great book for a parent and child or tween to share together. It is written by a mom and her school-age daughter. Audrey Faye, who also wrote under Deborah Geary in the past, adds her magical warmth and love to this tale. Her coauthor, Shae Geary, adds the spritely spirit and joy of a young person's insight.
Again, the Dragon Star has chosen an unlikely pair to be among the chosen. Oceania is a small dragon, but not a baby. She has lived by herself for a long time when she is connected to Lily through the kin call. Lily and her crew take Oceana back to the rest of the dragons, but then the problems in lessons and communication begin. Oceana is a water dragon afraid of fire. The rest of the dragons are fire dragons afraid of water. Who will ultimately conquer whose fear? This novel features Kis the battle-scarred dragon and the almost transparent queen dragon in major roles and brings us more insight into dragons of the past and Lovissa their queen.
I love the story and the characters, but I especially love the theme of conquering fears, of belonging and adapting, and of finding the best ways to communicate. Audrey Faye writes a fast moving but considerate novel that deeply explores the aforementioned themes. It helps to read book 1 to understand some of the characters and plot better, but not absolutely necessary. For fantasy and dragon lovers, for fans of Deborah Geary and Audrey Faye, these are two great books! Safe for all ages!
Apparently, the Dragon Star has a sense of humor. First chosen feels inadequate and wonders if the Dragon Star made a mistake. She and her beautiful newly hatched dragon are afraid of heights. Now the second chosen has bonded with a rare water dragon who can only communicate through water; something all fire dragons fear on a primitive level. The future dragons can now communicate with the past dragons through Oceana's ability. The biggest hurdle might not be fear of water for the dragons past. It will be finding a way to overcome their deep hatred of elves. A hatred well earned through years of vicious war. Can they not only get past their hatred, but somehow find a way to make peace? Their very survival as a species may depend on how they answer this question! I am thoroughly enjoying this series, and highly recommend it to anyone who loves great character driven stories. If you've never meant dragons, here's your chance. There ate a lot of dragons who can't wait to met you!
Lily & Oceana is the second book in the Dragon Kin series by Audrey Faye.
I appreciate the grandiose way in which the author has woven this tale connecting ancestors and descendants. Heros and pioneers. What will lend the dragons of old to releasing their hold on the home they've always known, abandoning Veld, and their heritage? How will the bridge the divide between their species and their Elven enemies, to become the dragon and Kin of the future?
I truly like how each of these five will have to face a fear. That in doing so they will help others overcome that which holds them back from their true potential.
Lily and Oceana touched my heart with the yearning for inclusion they share. And each dragon and Elf that reached out a tail or hand to join their side.
I wonder whether we can expect the modern dragon village to journey back to their ancestral land? And reconnect with the ashes of past queens? If it even still exists?
Will the next chosen also be within their village, and friend group? Or someone unknown?
It starts off with the queen of the old dragons narrating. Then switches to modern times. (Well, modern times for the story.) And switches back & forth throughout the story.
I love how they show it's not easy for either dragon or kin. They have to work hard, independently & together, to learn & improve, and like life, it's always a work in progress.
The only problem I have is with the use of the word "kin". In my culture, it means relatative. Someone who came from the same gene pool. So every time dragon "kin" is mentioned, I keep thinking sibling, or cousin or aunt/uncle & try to figure out which dragon is being referred to. Sometimes it took me a while to remember. 😂
Anyway, I read all 5 books & loved them all. I was really happy with the outcome of the last book.
And here we have .......a water dragon who has been so very alone .... and a grumbly elf who never dreamed of her own kin bond. And then it happens.
This was a bit harder for me to read as it really tugged on my heart. Oceana cannot communicate quite like others of her kind. Lily is so very determined to help her but is having trouble trying to find the way forward.
There are quite a few missteps on the part of both elves and dragons, and I was actually afraid for them for a bit as they did not quite fit into the standard kin bond and struggled so hard.
What a wonderful tale of really overcoming your strongest fear.
This book is similar to book 1, in that the storyline revolves are two primary characters again, with the two primary characters and the others playing a supporting role. The story is fun, and a mostly lighthearted read. That being said, the author has a few glaring issues with plot coherence. They are a couple of questions raised that are never answered. Does it impact the overall story not answering these questions? Not in a major way, but is definitely annoying for those of us that want a question answered when you reference something in the form of a question and then never go back and answer it.
Overall the story is a good continuation of the series and I'll be off to read book 3.
I'm a fan of anything dragon...and anything Audrey Faye. I love the story lines the feeling of family and kin. The author draws you in and builds characters that are relate-able and familiar. This is second in a series and I'm impatiently awaiting my next fix. If you haven't read the Fixer series take my advice go out and grab those as well. If you're a fan of strong women, science fiction and a great story you're going to love these books.
This story, like the first one, did contain a cuss word. I like to let people who like clean reads to know that. I really enjoyed this story. I didn't understand Lily's reluctance to be one of the chosen throughout the story. It was obvious she was, but for some reason she kept resisting it and it made me feel like that was keeping her from really bonding with Oceana. There was a disconnect with the dragon in this story for me.
This book has touched me in a way few do. Most of us are outsiders at some time. We learn that pain and a few of us learn to cope. Fewer still are accepted and valued as outsiders and invited into the fold. Facing our fear, accepting it and learning to play with it and in spite of it is close to miraculous in my world.. This is an accomplishment to be honored. I love how Dragon Kin honors all without lessening the pain or fear or anyone.
Excellent Ya read. Wonderful story that flows well with compelling characters and continuing story line, but I like a little more meat to my books. It felt like we were rushing to the finish line, a kind of predictable finish line. I will certainly continue to read this series, and I will enjoy them.
Book two does not disappoint. It is so well written.I laughed out loud, snorted and shed a tear or two. A book for adults and young children. It teaches valuable lessons while telling an endearing story. The whole time reading it my thoughts were I can't wait to read this to my Grandchildren.
I am enjoying this series very much. The girls and their dragons have lots of personality and are entertaining. I'm not sure about this other society hundreds of years from the past talking to them now though. I suspect we'll get it explained at some point. Kellen is still my favorite character.
Another beautiful story of the dragon kin series, where facing your fears is again the way to push forward for salvation. I’m enjoying the series but the one star is due to the lack of depth in the plot. And although I’m enjoying it enough to keep reading, I’m yet to find a breathtaking moment in the book, hence, 4 stars.
I listened to this on audiobook. It was really good. Perfect story time books well written. Funny. Doing a very good job in world building. I have lots of questions but I think that’s just a good indication the authors are rolling the book out well and engaging the reader. Can’t wait for the next one.
This new series gives the gift of love, laughter, tears, family, belonging and perseverance through challenges in much the same way as your previous works. It feels a bit like coming home. Thank you.
Lilly is a most unassuming elf. She does her jobs around the village, not expecting to find a dragon. She finds her dragon in the most unexpected place, surrounded by water. Follow the adventures of the Dragon Star kin and their dragons, great storyline.
This sounds like the old Deborah with a good splash of Shae. These, like the Witch series, will live on my Reread shelf. I could wish you no better than to tell you to enjoy.
Wonderful world building and character development in the classical style. With the mesmerizing cover art it is very easy to imagine the storyline as it unfolds. No spoilers here. I invite anyone who is an avid reader to check out this author. She will not disappoint.
Very good read. Especially the character development between the ancient dragons and the "present day" dragons. Looking forward to the next installment. Would have appreciated an index of names for characters.
Once again I am amazed at the love and hope this author infuses her books with. I am overjoyed at the fact that this series has shown all these feelings are the same as I felt when I Read the witch series that she wrote as Debora Geary. Please keep writing. Thank you.
Lily is a grouchy elf, and feels like an outsider.. then while attending a wedding, she meets fate. Oceana is a grumpy dragon, and it tests Lily, it’s a test for all dragons on becoming a community and bonding with each other. I loved this book.. is Kellan ever going to get a Dragon?
The second Dragonstar chosen is small and swampy and her elf is of the water clans. These stories are all part of the same arc, sharing a cast of characters. It makes it memorable.
