Aside from mother and writer, Leslie considers herself a perpetual student. She has degrees in biology and studio art, but will devour any subject of interest simply for the knowledge. This excellent sequel to Particular Intentions focuses on Georgiana Darcy. She's now twenty years old and years past the usual age of coming out in society. She may have recovered her spirits at home with close family since her traumatic experience with George Wickham, but Georgiana continues to be very fearful of London society despite the fact that he's now dead. She is certain she has no interest in ever marrying.

Lydia Bennet has recognized the need to behave with more decorum in public. She comes to the Darcys for a new start because her reputation is irreparably damaged around Meryton based on her previous behavior. I really love how Lydia has grown into a kind, warmhearted young lady, yet she's still lively, playful and sometimes a bit mischievous. She's older and wiser, but she's not unrecognizable from the girl she once was.

She and Georgiana develop a close friendship. Lydia, of course, can't understand Georgiana's reluctance to attend balls or her lack of desire to marry. Their two personalities are a complementary contrast, sort of like Elizabeth and Jane, or Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy.

Nathaniel Howard, Viscount Sele, keeps popping up. Much of the book involves Georgiana's preconceived notions based on what he was like as a boy. She didn't care for him at all then, and she certainly has no romantic interest in him now since she's not planning to marry anyone. Meanwhile, Lydia encounters Mr. Hanson, who was part of the Meryton regiment when she was younger. She is afraid that his knowledge of her, if he shares it, would poison her reputation once again.

Since this is set in the Darcy household, naturally Darcy and Elizabeth are present much of the time, as is their delightfully impish young son, William. We also get to meet Lord and Lady Lindsey, Lord Sele's parents, who were close friends to the parents of Georgiana and Fitzwilliam. Colonel Richard Fitzwilliam and his betrothed, Julia, are also featured in part of the story, as is Richard's mother, Lady Fitzwilliam.

Even with George Wickham dead, Georgiana's past comes back to haunt her, threatening to ruin her present. Someone with knowledge of all that occurred in Ramsgate enters the story, and all that Georgiana has feared appears to be coming true.

The writing flows well most of the time, and I do enjoy that there are entries into Georgiana's diary interspersed throughout the book.

I did find a recurrent grammar issue, though, which interfered with the flow. There are many instances where a pronoun is missing its correct antecedent. Usually it's "she" at the beginning of a paragraph. Instead of this referring to the last female mentioned, it refers to Georgiana. It took me a while to figure out this is because it is mostly written in third person limited to Georgiana's point of view. In at least one instance, though, there is a similar situation where third person is limited to Lord Sele's point of view, and the "he" had me re-reading to understand the reference. Regardless of the point of view, though, pronouns always refer to the nearest antecedent. This error adversely affects the flow in a number of spots.

Other than that, this is a lovely story.

“Things get better – hurt less – over time. If you let them.” –Rainbow Rowell, Attachments

This book follows book 1: Particular Intentions: It is recommended that the reader check out book 1 because… there is a lot of information that is different from canon. Several pairings went into another direction and that will throw the reader off while they are in book 2. It had been a while since I read book 1 and I was constantly going… wait… how was that situation again? This Lydia is a completely different person and I just adored her. Wait, did I just say that?

Rating: clean but with a caveat: there was mild descriptions of and reference to a violent act. Not graphic and not explained in detail.

Georgiana gets to tell her story. She is now all grown up and no longer the little girl, simpering and quaking in her boots and hiding behind the adults. She is twenty years old and about to have a come out whether she wants one or not. She also has a suitor, whether she wants him or not. He was a brat-child that gave her grief when they were kids. He hid her doll and she kicked him in the chins. They are perfect for each other.

Lord Sele… I loved this guy. I’m sorry, he was perfect for Georgiana. Our girl had closed off her heart and was letting Ramsgate dictate her future. Lord Sele was having none of that and had determined that he was going to marry Georgiana. He said so when he was twelve and as far as he was concerned, nothing had changed. He had loved her ever since.

Just when you think it is safe… Mrs. Younge rises out of the slums of London to cause trouble. We learn a bit more about her involvement in Ramsgate… that conniving, blackmailing, b-witch of a scheming… well, you get the picture. I loved how they handled the situation. Don’t mess with a Darcy… they have many influential friends that are willing to stand with them and make someone’s life a living hell.

I loved this story and highly recommend both books.

The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek. ~Joseph Campbell

Particular Intentions (the first book in this series) tells us that Georgiana’s Ramsgate encounter was much more serious than in Canon and she was actually raped by Wickham in his attempt to convince her to elope.

I did a quick re-read of Particular Intentions before starting this sequel. Particular Attachments could be a stand-alone but is best understood if Particular Intentions is also read.

In ‘Particular Intentions’ Wickham raped Georgiana at Ramsgate. He is dead now but Georgiana still must live with that awful event. She has always been shy and reticent so the trauma hasn’t been dealt with in her psyche yet. She is 20, hasn’t been out in the tonne yet. Having Lizzy has been a help but unlike most JAFF stories, Lizzy hasn’t performed miracles. So Georgiana starts the story in a bad place.

But Lydia has matured and become a delightful young lady and is about to join Lizzy so she can have a season. The Meryton gossips only sees Lydia as the immature lady Lydia used to be so the Darcys are happy to change Lydia’s future. G and L get along well and become friends. The story is about the two young women and their journey to adulthood.

Not a lot of action but a lot of believable angst. Quite a bit of humor to be had with shy G and extrovert L are living together and each helping the other.

There are lots of relatives and good friends working to make a good life for the girls. No supermen or women here. Perfectly normal, flawed people living their lives.

I found the story entertaining and sometimes moving. I’ll read it again some year.

A Compassionate and Compelling Tale of Conquering the Past

TYPE OF AUSTENESQUE NOVEL: Pride and Prejudice Sequel, Minor Character

TIME FRAME: Takes place four years after Particular Intentions, Georgiana is 20 years of age

SERIES: Book 2 of 2 in the Particular Intentions Series (while stand alone, I would recommend reading Particular Intentions first to enhance enjoyment and understanding)

SYNOPSIS: It has been five years since Ramsgate and Georgiana Darcy has still not made her debut. Because of what transpired with Wickham (which is sadly much worse than what happens in P&P), Georgiana has decided to eschew London society and has determined that she will not marry. Ever. But in order to spend the holidays with her brother’s family, Georgiana has decided to return to London after all this time. Georgiana’s time in London begins pleasant enough, but she soon encounters some people from her past – a childhood playmate whom she always found insufferable and a person guilty of causing her great harm and suffering… Will Georgiana overcome her past? Will her secrets cause her ruin?

WHAT I LOVED:

- A Journey of Moving Forward: Brava to Ms. Diamond for telling this story and featuring the continued emotional evolution of Georgiana after such an experience. Georgiana’s resignation to remain unmarried and her feelings of unsuitability are understandable. Her story illustrates how even though there is progress and healing, the past can still have power over you – no matter how many years go by. I greatly admire Ms. Diamond’s sensitivity and compassion in her projection of Georgiana’s feelings and evolution throughout the entirety of this series.

- Nathaniel Howard, Lord Sele: Oh my! How I fell hard for Nathaniel Howard in this tale! He is the perfect foil for Georgiana’s plans to never marry! He has chosen her for his future bride when he was twelve years old. And while Georgiana believes he said it just to provoke her, he truly meant it and has no thought of relinquishing his dream. Even if all Georgiana can promise him is her friendship! *sigh* I adore Nathaniel – I love his gentleness with Georgiana, his persistence (ahem…impatience!), and his boyish charm! His long-term devotion to Georgiana and his adorable ways of nudging her to open up to him completely had me undone. Definitely one of my favorite original Austenesque heroes!

- An Unlikely Friendship: I’ve often seen Georgiana develop close friendships with Kitty, Mary, and even Jane, but it is a rarer occurrence to see Georgiana become a bosom friend with Lydia Bennet! I loved witnessing the mature development of Lydia’s character in this story. Since her mother passed away a few years ago, she has grown more self-aware and has worked hard to improve her reputation. I thought it was sweet how she would treat Georgiana like a sister and want to share late-night confidences together. Her (no so gentle) prompting for Georgiana to let go the past was admirable, and I was glad to see that she still displayed some of her spirited proclivities (but only with family!)

- Four Weddings But No Funerals: It was absolutely lovely to see some of the secondary characters in this story have their own happily-ever-afters! I loved learning bits about their marriages and seeing them interact with their spouses. Colonel Fitzwilliam is a riot! 😉

WHAT I WASN’T TOO FOND OF:

If anything, I might have preferred to see some more page time for Lydia and her suitor in the second half of this story (can you believe I just said that?!)

CONCLUSION:

Particular Attachments truly is a commendable and praiseworthy sequel to Pride and Prejudice! As always, I enjoy stories that spotlight Georgiana and show her developing strength and achieving her own happiness, but I loved this story all the more, particularly, because it delves deep into Georgiana’s emotions and displays an inspiring journey of her healing. Beautifully done, Ms. Diamond!

Another Great Read From L.L. Diamond

This is a continuation from the previous book Particular Intentions. It deals mainly with Georgiana Darcy and the impact from Ramsgate. It is a lovely story about her growth in trust and courage. The book also allows us to see what is happening to Lydia, as well as Darcy and Elizabeth. I really enjoyed this book and I believe it is a great sequel to Particular Intentions.

While ODC is present in this book, the story is largely Georgiana Darcy's.
It is a moving, difficult, engaging and at times a funny read. Brought tears to my eyes, then had me laughing out loud and all of the in between.

Would recommend to read "Particular Intentions" first as this book enters 4 years after that book but it is not a hundred prosent necessary as it can stand on its own.

The Darcy's has had a son, William and he is a funny little chap. Georgiana has turned twenty and are living comfortably at Pemberley.
Journeying to Heartfordshire for Mr Bennet's wedding (Mrs Bennet has passed a couple of years prior), Lydia is invited to visit with the Darcy's in town.
Rumours compels Georgiana to have her debut as she overhears some ladies speculation on why she has not...
As a knight in shining armour, Lord Sele castigate the gossiping ladies. Georgiana is not so impressed though. She remembers him as a pain in the b... from her childhood.
Lord Sele however, has all the patience and love required to earn the trust of the badly damaged Georgiana.

Lydia has her own demons to fight and meets a nemesis in town. This is to some extent, Lydia's story too.

Mrs Young stirs up a havoc as she enter their lives again as a kept woman.

There is a twist to the Bennet's story at the end and a little bundle of joy for the Darcy's.

Heartily recommend this book!

I did read the book preceding this one but found that because that was some time ago I could not remember all the details. SPOILER: Some differences are that Jane has not married Bingley plus Wickham is dead. End of SPOILER. Interspersed in the story are Georgiana's journal entries so we know her thoughts and feelings.

This story is mostly Georgiana's, who after Ramsgate (which in this story was more traumatic than canon) swears she will never marry. In fact she has so delayed her debut that people question why.

As she moves with the Darcys to reside in London for a season and have her come-out, she meets a childhood friend, Nathaniel, Lord Sele, who has clung to his childhood desire to marry Georgiana. He is not reticent about letting her know this, either. Another thread in this story is that Lydia has matured although she retains a lively personality. She, too, comes to London to stay with the Darcys and has her own romance. Yes, Georgiana and Lydia becomes friends who support each other.

However, Georiana has a secret as to Ramsgate and dreads the possibility of it becoming known. It gets in the way of allowing her to accept Nathaniel's attentions. And THEN Mrs. Younge shows up. That adds angst to this story.

I did enjoy the ending for Georgiana and Nathaniel but we also have a lovely surprise as to Mr. Bennet who has remarried after his first wife's death.

I did enjoy this story. It can be read alone but would be much more enjoyable when you know the events from the first book.

It has been one year since I had last read Book 1, 'Particular Intentions' which mainly focused on Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Before reading 'Particular Attachments', I decided to re-read it again to keep all the details fresh in my mind and to allow the story flow. I do feel it is necessary to read 'Particular Intentions' first to understand all the dynamics.

This is Georgiana's story and how far she has come toward healing due to the assault by Mr. Wickham at Ramsgate. I felt Ms. Diamond has sensitively handled this issue.

Georgiana has sworn never to marry. However, with their return to London for the Christmas season, Georgiana's fears re-surface...her fears of being the topic of gossip and causing scandal to fall on herself and her beloved brother, Darcy, and his wife, Elizabeth. Then when she dreams of her childhood tormentor, who vowed she would marry him, she becomes completely tongue-tied when she finally meets him again. Oh my, Lord Sele is swoon-worthy and determined in his pursuit of Georgiana. However, her secret lies between them. How he breaks through her defenses will have you admiring him as much as Darcy! I so loved the journal entries that Georgiana wrote...her fears, her feelings and her hopes. His mother, the Countess of Sele is a very intelligent and insightful character.

But there more to this story than just Georgiana. Lydia is joining them in London. A Lydia who will force Georgiana out of her comfort zone. I loved Lydia in this story...yes I did say 'love'. Her growth since 'Particular Intentions' has been delightful, but have no fear, the young Lydia still simmers under the surface. Believe it or not, she has hidden talents...which I would have liked to have seen explored!

"If you continue to shun the world, you allow him influence over your future - he is still a part of your life. He deserves no such attention."

Let's not forget Darcy and Elizabeth, Colonel Fitzwilliam and his mother, the Countess of Matlock. Each play a role in helping Georgiana through her insecurities. There is a wonderful new twist for Colonel Fitzwilliam too! The Darcy heir certainly keeps everyone on their toes as well!

My only quibble, not enough to take stars away, was the wedding at the beginning of the story. I would have loved seeing certain family members attending and learning more about them through that route. But like I said, it is only a quibble...but a new surprise near the end was so much fun!

So, dear readers, to find out more, I highly recommend you read this variation based on Georgiana Darcy journey to love!

Georgiana Darcy is convinced that events in her past will prevent her from experiencing love and marriage. She has not formally "come out" but gets pressured into doing so as people question if there is something wrong with her. She may have also had a rather forceful nudge from Elizabeth's sister Lydia (now older, wiser, but still playful).

Georgina must allow herself to feel and be appreciated by a family friend who has been waiting for her his whole life. How he proves that is by far my favorite part of the whole book. It is also fun as it is a continuation of Particular Intentions which provides a further window into the life of Elizabeth & Darcy :)

I enjoyed this novel and it is worth the five star rating. It has depth not only in the characters but the plot as well. I also thought that the story was mostly about Georgiana and it included Lydia Bennet which brought some smiles and chuckles along the way. I also thought that each of the girls brought out the best in each other. The author did each of the characters justice through her writing.
I enjoyed this novel better than the first one in this series and don't know why. Maybe because the plot was so different from many I have read.
The strength of each character was portrayed in an excellent light. I also thought that Darcy was much more relaxed than in previous novels.
The novel linked Georgiana's childhood to her adulthood through the Lindsey family. The author tied the link to the missing doll, Matilda to the story in a lovable fashion. I was glad to read a story where Georgiana's mother was involved in the plot.
The love and patience of Nathaniel Lindsey was written in word as if you were witnessing him with Georgiana.
Excellent plot and written wonderfully!

Lovely

I really enjoyed the storyline. It was very well written. Georgiana's past with George Wickham was so heartbreaking. Nathaniel was quite endearing and steadfast. I wish more would been said about Mr. B and his new situation along with a description of Mr. Collins face when he got a letter from his cousin asking for congratulations.

Although I am a few chapters from the end, I want to say how much I am enjoying Particular Attachments. L. L. Diamond has crafted a lovely, poignant, and hopeful follow-up to Particular Intentions with a focus on Miss Georgiana Darcy's growing up, healing, making friends, and then her romance.

I am not a big fan of the romance genre, as many novels are so formulaic, but the author has crafted a lovely romance that is also a coming of age story.

Avid Reader

After reading Particular Intentions for the second time, I started reading the second novel. Georgina's mental state remained the focus and how she overcame the trauma of rape. Lydia also made a major transformation after hearing how the leading ladies of Hertfordshire really felt about her mother. Mrs. Goulding called her a strumpet, and she was mortified, finally understanding how her inappropriate behavior affected her friendships and ability to find a husband. She was basically shunned. I loved the way Nathaniel won Georgina's love and trust since he had loved her since they were children. This was a n excellent love story.

Lawwwwwwd this one dragged on and on and on and

.... not much happened. Spoiler alert:

Lizzy and FD have a child, so do mr and Mrs Bennet, Georgiana meets an old friend and ends up marrying him in spite of Mrs Younge’s attempt at further treachery, Col. Fitzwilliam is as one-note as ever (also married). I must have liked the first part of this story in order to start the second.

So, I guess some people are gonna like this story as plenty of people have read it and gave it good reviews. Three stars because it isn’t horrible. Just boring. To me.

A nice follow on to Particular Intentions. I appreciate seeing Georgiana and Lydia a bit older and more mature, and its certainly a perfect story for how Georgiana finds love. Her suitor is perfectly patient and committed, exactly as he'd need to be to win over Georgiana after all she as been through. I was hoping to get more glimpses and scenes of Darcy and Elizabeth together as a couple, but the narrative never strays from Georgiana.

This P&P sequel continues with Georgiana's story. Some years have passed since the events of Ramsgate, Georgiana is now 20 and is spending the season in town. With her is Lydia, a new calmer (mainly) Lydia, as Mr Bennet is about to re-marry. Can Georgiana allow herself to love, will Lydia find happiness.
Family friend Lord Sele vowed as a boy to marry Georgiana. So is his return from his estates in Ireland a coincidence or are his thoughts on her.
An enjoyable well-written story

Another great book!

I love L.L. Diamond! I have yet to read a book by her I didn't like. Her books are fresh, with real characters, and clean language. If you are a JAFF reader, you must read this author's books. You won't regret it. On a side note, if you'd like to read this story, you'll get more out of it if you read Particular Intentions first. Enjoy!

Wonderful sequel, maybe even better than the first!!!!

Even though this was Georgiana’s story, there was plenty of ODC, and the author did a fantastic job delivering a complex and deep story that had such obstacles, but love won out against the odds. I could hardly put it down. My favorite scene was Darcy supporting Elizabeth in labor and then delivering his baby. Sigh!! But Georgiana and her “prince” were awesome, too. Love it!!!!!!!!!!!

I might say something typical like, 'I can't believe I haven't reviewed this yet,' but the truth is I believe it. First, there are stories where I am so gobsmacked when finishing them that I am clueless as to what to say. And the last time I put a date in for reading this book I believe this about myself completely. I love so much about this book. I have been rereading (re-listening to) all of L.L. Diamond's books this month not just because I wanted to for some time now, but I feel they deserve being reread in addition to Rain and Retribution, which is the book I eventually am going to treat myself to...for like the umpteenth time.

I love Georgiana in this story, so vulnerable, so determined, so torn about her past coming to light. I love Lydia in this story, she's the pushy inquisitive demanding gal pal every utterly shy introvert like Georgiana needs. She might seem annoying some days, but she backs off and respects Georgiana's secrets until she's ready to share them. Lydia is also so endearing when she has the possibility of her own suitor. The table could've been turned on her with teasing and such, but Lydia shows such a panic about the situation it would be too cruel for someone like Georgie to do something like that. We eventually find out why Lydia is in such a panic, and we end up liking this suitor even more for it.

I love Lord Sele in this story. In the best possible way Lord Sele is not going to take no for an answer, since Georgie informs him she will never marry. He is so swoon-worthy. When people on FB are discussing original characters they fell in love with and were just as hero worthy as the canon heroes, Lord Sele is who I think of. He's loved Georgiana since they were children and in fact vowed to marry her when he was something like twelve years old. I get a book boyfriend withdrawal after this book finishes. See, gobsmacked.

Lord Sele's mother is a wonderful figure in this story for Georgiana to lean on and confide in. Don't you love it when the person you've told your horrible tale to is terribly angry on your behalf, but shows the dignity of comforting and accepting.

Georgie faces another tangible foe from her past and it takes the Darcys and the Matlocks full force both men and women to fight this one. It was rather ugly all around.

The Darcys make many wonderful appearances in this tale, not to mention a little boy who steals the show.

I love this story and it is on my frequent reread list. Highly recommended, but I suggest reading Particular Intentions first. You won't be sorry you did.

Perhaps because I had read several of the opening chapters at Austen Variations, I had a more challenging time than usual in sinking into this novel. But once I did, I went gangbusters trying to find out what happens between Georgiana Darcy and her childhood nemesis, Nathaniel. Considering the crazy week I've just managed to survive while juggling the teaching of two Brave Writer classes and grading many essays for my business, it was a miracle that I finished this book at all.

It does help to read Particular Intentions first so that one knows Darcy and Elizabeth's story before launching into the story of Georgiana and Nathaniel as well as Lydia and her Mr. Hanson. Four years have passed since the first book in the series, and Georgiana, who has delayed her come-out to age twenty because she plans to never marry, is finally convinced to enter London society. And the annoying Nathaniel is immediately at her side. She ignores him. She teases him. He makes her angrier than anyone else on earth...and the sparks fly! But Georgiana's past seems to be catching up with her, and she must tell Nathaniel a dreadful secret...one that will ruin her in society forever.

Once I got about a quarter of the way into this book, I couldn't put it down. I even brushed my teeth with Kindle in hand, eager for the next encounter between Georgiana and the persistent Nathaniel. A delightful book in every way!!

I rarely give 5's to any book except for classics, but this novel deserves it--and then some!

LL Diamond is always a joy to read, but she surpassed herself with this one. There's not too much I can say without spoilers, except that she handled Georgiana's particular issues with a sensitivity and grace few authors have managed, in my experience. I'm SO glad I re-read Particular Intentions immediately beforehand, as I was able to jump into this continuation without having to rack my memory for mentioned people/incidents.

And if Ms. Diamond reads these reviews, allow me to add a plug for a novella exploring Jane's romance--I want to know more!
