Sweet Seasons #4

The Spring of Candy Apples

Rate this book
They’re fun! They’re quirky! They’re Sweet Seasons—unlike any other girls’ books you’ve ever read. You could call them alternative, God-honoring chick lit. Join Candy Thompson on a sweet, lighthearted, and honest romp through the friendships, romances, family, school, faith, and values that make a girl’s lie as full as it can be.

It’s the end of Candace’s senior year, and life’s getting sticky.

A promotion to The Zone’s Candy Counter means Candace gets to create gooey treats all day long. She is a finalist for The Zone’s college scholarship (Florida anyone?), things with Kurt are getting really weird, and she’s bothered by all the questions about her future. Not unlike the challenge of making candy apples, Candace struggles to resist getting stuck and believe in what is truly at her core.

Confession: I’m never been to an amusement park expect a Six Flags when I was much younger (and I swear I was *this* close to drowning on that water log ride). So, this series was a fun taste (see what I did there? ;) ) of behind the scenes of a park. I’m really sad this is the last book in the “Sweet Seasons” series, as this one was definitely my favorite and makes me wish there was more! I was actually semi-okay with the dating stuff in “The Spring of Candy Apples” since I’ve shipped that couple since Book #1. The secret from the first book is also revealed in this final book and I totally approve of it. I really would like a sequel series or a novella…anything! ;)

3.5 stars. Not my favorite in the series, but it still brought everything together nicely. I wish there had been an epilogue with Candy in college though. The romance in this one was the best, and I was excited that the secret that Candy (but not the reader) found out in an earlier book was finally revealed.

Very fast read and a cute series.

The Spring of Candy Apples by Debbie Viguie is the fourth and final (no! say it ain't so!) book in the Sweet Seasons series about high school senior Candy Thompson. Candy is back working at The Zone, an amusement park, but now she's a long term employee and learning the ropes as a referee. She's on pins and needles waiting to see if she wins a scholarship from The Zone, and her relationship with Kurt is on the rocks. I have really enjoyed following the adventures of Candy and The Zone gang. Viguie has really brought to life the entire amusement park and filled it with a vital and interesting cast of characters. Candy's faith and trusting in God has grown throughout the series as she also learns to trust herself and let herself shine. She finally figures out what fans have always known about her and Josh, and the series ends on a high note. I do hope that Viguie isn't finished with Candy and will follow her through her college years. This is one character I'm not ready to say good-bye to.

I liked this book, but I felt like it was kind of unrealistic. I also thought that it all wrapped up nicely without any major clashes or disturbances. I wanted the author to slow down and show me why she made those choices instead of speeding through the story and then dropping me off at the end. I had been rooting for this to happen all through the series, but when I saw how it ended I was a little disappointed because I wanted it to be more original and unpredictable. I still enjoyed the book, but it's not at the top of my favorites list.

Perfect for : The young adult in your life.

In a nutshell: This is a wonderfully inspirational series written for teen girls - but is even a fun read for adults! This is the fourth book of the Sweet Seasons series by Debbie Viguie - now that all four seasons have been covered, I hope Debbie finds a way to continue following Candy and her friends as they go off to college. In this book, we return to see more of Candy's life as she experiences all the teen things: friendships, romance issues, school (and dealing with college applications and scholarships), work, thinking about the future and faith!

Extended Review:

Characters: I have really enjoyed reading about Candy, Tamara, Kurt, Josh, etc. I love that Debbie has given them REAL teen-sounding dialogue, I can see my niece relating to them with no problem!

Story-Line: There is no preaching in this book, but rather, Candy is gently guided through life with a focus on values and faith. She is a typical teen, facing many challenges (Is Kurt the right boyfriend, could she go to school far away)

Readability: A fun and easy read that will hold your attention and provide inspiration.

Overall: A wonderful addition to an already great series. I highly recommend this book to any parents looking for some good reading for their teen daughters (nieces, grand-daughters, etc).

I read The Spring of Candy Apples because it looked interesting. I also had to read a book that followed one of the rules for my language arts class. The rule it followed was that it had the word "Spring" in its title. I went to the library looking for a book on the computer. I finally found a book that had the word "spring" in it. I went to the shelf it was on, looked it over, and checked it out of the library. I had found myself a book to read.

My opinion on this book is that it is a very drama like book. It involves a regular to not so regular senior girl named Candace. She is just a girl who as a job at an amusement park called "The Zone". She also is in the middle of a relationship between her and a guy named Kurt. Unfortunately she and Kurt broke up. Which is sad, but okay because there really wasn't any spark. She gets into a contest and is in the top five for a scholarship to a college and a game master at the Zone.

I think that any girl could read this book. I think this because it's what goes on in a girl's life. This book could even relate to them if they were in one of these situations and expressing the same feelings. It might even give out some advice. This book would be great for that.

JUNE 2011 REVIEW (wow what was I)

*Note: more of a review of the entire series than the final book itself

I've recently read all of the Sweet Seasons books in order, and it's really a very different effect from reading them more spaced out as individual stories.

This was the first time I've read Sweet Seasons sequentially, and I was surprised to see how much Candace changed from the summer to the beginning of the spring. A lot is said about how The Zone has changed Candace, but to be honest, I never really saw that much. I understood that she met great people, but I really felt as though Candace was altering their lives for the better instead of the other way around. Reading them this way, though, I can really see how much The Zone and its workers did for Candace and what she has done for them. The Zone is almost a character in itself in this series, and I would love to go to this theme park.

I was really pleased to see things turn out well for Candace, and The Spring of Candy Apples sums everything up in a really nice ending.

Candace has been a theme-park employee for nearly a year now (books 1 thru 3), has been nominated for a park-sponsored full-ride scholarship by her friend Josh who submitted the ride design she scribbled on a napkin (shades of J.K. Rowling here?), and is now being scrutinized as one of the finalists.

At first I thought I was stepping into Barbie-land. Okay, maybe I was, but after awhile I let that go and just let myself enjoy the story. I got past the technology and entertainment references that dated this (clear back to 2009!). By the end of the book I found myself wearing a silly grin on my face and reading parts to my daughter. Predicatable? Yes. Fun? Yes.

There are a few "Christian" references which some readers might feel are forced and out of place. I found them to be refreshing and sincere. They were an honest attribute of the main character and a driving force in the choices she makes.

Candace has put in her time at the Zone and is finally rewarded with a part-time job to go along with her nomination for the scholarship competition. She is continuing to learn more about the Zone everyday and a little about herself. Between her new job, rehearsals for the play, and time with Tamara, she is also dealing with her changing feelings toward Kurt. Good thing Josh and Tamara are always there for her. This book wraps up all of the mysteries that have been developing through the first three in the series. It does not disappoint with this last look at the crazy life in The Zone!

I have to say that this is the best book in the whole series! I wish that Debbie Viguie would make a fifth book to the sweet seasons series. In the spring of candy apples Candace is making plans for college and has a new job at The Zone as a employee at the Candy Counter selling candy apples and fudge. Then Candace returns to worrying about Kurt and her best guy friend Josh and if her and Josh will ever be "more than just good friends." Who knows? Like I said this is my favorite book in the series and I highly suggest that you READ THIS AWESOME SERIES!!!!:))

Loved it!! I'm sad the series has come to an end. This book did a great job tying up lose ends. Josh's big secret is finally revealed, and Candance has found that she is comfortable in the spotlight and that to love others, she just needs to show up.

Out of the whole series, God is most obviously spoken of in this book. I dind't find it preachy, but a nice compliment to the story. I was interested to read how a family celebrated Easter, the candle light vigil and time spent alone in prayer. I think I need more of that in my Easter celebrations.

Tamara won a prize to a very exclusive resturant named Boone's. She decided to have a party for her parent's anniversary at the resturant. Candace asked Josh to help with stage st-up for the play Candace was in and Tamara asked James to help. Lisa asked Candace if she could join her Youth program at the church and Candace said yes. Candace is practicing with her team for the talent contest they are going to bulid with cups, the eiffel tower, stone Hendge, and the Pyramids. Josh, James, Tamara and Candace were all helping ouit with the play. The boys are both coming.

Review This book was pretty much predictable if you've read the first three books in the series. There were a few twists (who Josh's parents were, what goes on with the evil Lisa), but most of the resolutions were seen from a mile away. All that being said, it was a quick, easy read that brought a nice resolution to all of the story lines.

Recommended Fans of Christian YA fiction who have read the first three books in the series.

Consider this my review for the entire series:
I think I read this too late in my life to 'appreciate' it. If I was 12 maybe I would find it kinda good I guess. But I'm not and I'm with Lisa when the main character needs to shut up and sit down. Shes too perfect! Sad case of the Mary-Sue. There is barely any plot in any of the 4 books and the pacing is so awful. But really with no reason what so ever she wins everything (No exception)! its unrealistic and annoying to read. The side characters, Kurt, Tamera, Josh, etc. were really fun to read about though. Anyway, I might be stealing the idea of a Amusement park setting but this series gets low scores from me.

Okay honestly I have been waiting for this moment, like everytime Candy got back together with Kurt or like they had an argument and got over it, I was so mad. Because everytime she was in trouble Josh came in and saved her. Then suddenly Josh and Candy got together I had a little dance party I was so happy. I was so happy with the ending and I just loved it so much.

Sad the series ended and this is the last book but ugh so good, little me loved this for a reason. The characters are developed so good throughout every installation I just really wished that we had more of Josh and Candace in the dating setting!! Last chapter felt so short and a few others as well but overall it's a really great read and I'm so glad I found the books again.

I didn't LOVE how the romance wrapped up. It just... I dont know, didn't seem very romantic? But overall really liked this series. Definitely sweet (pun intended). I think there's one more? But I dont think the library has the audiobook so it might be a while before I get to it.
I also cant believe I did NOT guess Josh's secret. At. All. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Probably enjoyed this one the most because of certain...reasons xD Can't really go into details, but these were really just short, mindless books I could listen to in my spare time. There's not a lot to them, but they are sort of fun if you're in the mood for them.

I'm so sad that I've finally come to the end of reading about Candace Thompson, but I'm happy to say that The Spring of Candy Apples is the best of the series, and readers will definitely be happy with the way that Debbie Viguie chose to wrap up her story.

Over the course of the four books, and the corresponding four seasons, Candace has changed and grown a lot as a character. Not only has she herself changed, but she's also been the reason for change for a lot of her friends along the way. She's continued to be first and foremost concerned with following God's plan, even though she sometimes struggles to figure out what He wants, and with trying to live as an example. Throughout the last year of her life, the Zone has played a part in almost every single one of her major life milestones, and she's feeling bittersweet as she moves into her last season of working at the Zone before college takes her away.

I was so happy with this book overall, and it definitely exceeded my expectations for wrapping the series up. Candace endeared herself a little bit more to me with each and every book, and after finishing this one, she's definitely one of my new favorite female protagonists. I once again really enjoyed the vivid way that the Zone is described, as it makes the reader feel like they're right there experiencing it with Candace, and I loved how the author touched on just how important the theme park has become to Candace. It's definitely ended up as much more than a first job. I was finally also happy with the romance element included in this one as I've shipped this couple right from the start, and I couldn't be happier how it was all wrapped up. As an added bonus, the reader is finally clued in to Josh's big secret, and I have to say it really surprised me, and I hadn't guessed right like I thought I had.

While I'm so sad to see this series come to an end, I'm so pleased with the way everything was wrapped up. At least if I have to see a favorite series come to an end, I can be thankful for the fact that it was a very good end.

Final Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I can't recommend this series enough, and not just to teenage girls as I enjoyed it immensely even though I'm definitely not in the target age group!

As it seems more often than not, I tend to occur a habit of reading series out of order due to the way that my library purchases them, as today's book is a series that I read a review about years ago and it looked like something great and back then , the library did not purchase the series but today in new books, what do I see but Book #4 in the series, so of course without any hesistation I took the book and went straight to reading it.
The story focuses on the main character Candace aka Candy who has just found out that she has been nominated and is in in the top 5 running for a scholarship at Florida Coast College. However this Spring is about to become a time of new beginnings for Candace as she experiences relationship problems , enemies who soon become frenemies , future education choices, drama and of course most important thing in Candace's lfe is God. The saying and bible verse , " when God closes one door , he open another " definitely rings true in The Spring of Candy Apples as we see numerous doors close and twice as many open this season for Candace.
As we readers move into a new season , depending where in the world you are - will it be a summer of hope and love and of course fun in the sun, or will it be a winter of sitting in front of the fireplace, snow in your frontyard and a time to reflect .
As always , this was a perfect read and a series , I wouldn't mind backtracking and reading Books 1-3

Is it bad that I'm happy this is the last book in this series?

These books were all fun and lighthearted enough to keep me reading them, but there's really nothing about them that makes them stand out as different or special in my mind. They were good to help me get out of a couple of reading slumps since I can finish one of them in a day, but they're not anything that I would recommend to someone or reread again myself. I think one thing I don't like about this series is how unrealistic and predictable it is. I pretty much already knew what was going to happen in this book when I was still reading the first one in the series. I think I would have enjoyed this series a lot more when I was younger, maybe around twelve or thirteen. So all of that to say, this is a horrible series, it's just wasn't my cup of tea. I think it would be best for junior high girls who are looking for something cute and clean to read.

God and Christianity played a pretty substantial role in these books and the writing was fairly average, but I read this series when I was 13 and had the fondest feelings towards it, and after reading it again I see why.

The last book is by far my favorite and I think that the series itself is an excellent showcase of personal growth and development and finding happiness and a purpose in a place where you never expected it. Philosophically, once again, the role that religion plays in this series makes me eye-roll a bit but this series wasn't nearly as preachy as some other more Christian-oriented YA I've read.

Glad I reread; there were definitely some plot twists I didn't expect which surprised me, the overall message was solid, and the culmination of the series was light and sweet like cotton candy.

This is the 4th and final book in the Sweet Seasons Series. Candace is now ending her chapter of life at the Zone and in high school. She makes some big decisions throughout this book including where to go to college. The Zone is holding a talent show and deciding who wins the scholarship because of their entry for a new ride. This is a good wrap-up of the series. Not as great as the first two books, but still enjoyable.
