Sigh. I was reluctant to finish this book. I liked having it there, waiting for me to pick it up. I lived in Scottsdale, Arizona for almost two years in the late 8o's. When I started to read I was amazed that Mr. Cheek had managed to capture the very things I loved while there. It also intrigued me that it wasn't written like the usual travel books I had read......I felt like I was there. While reading I did a "search" on him to see if he had written additional books I might enjoy. I couldd't believe it.....he and his wife picked up and moved from Tucson in 1998 and moved to Washington State!!! Plus.......his latest book is on how to build a sailboat!!!!! What?! In retrospect I suppose it is no different than my moving back to Michigan. He had such a feel for the beautiful state of Arizona and his writing style certainly made a hit with me. It made me feel like I was there for a while each night as I read a few pages before falling asleep. sigh

Covers Arizona by themes, mostly centered around the landscape and the people who live there: Deserts, Canyons, Prehistoric Arizonans, etc. Wonderfully written in a narrative (as opposed to list) style - Dad and I read it out loud to each other in the car. My favorite introduction to the area so far.

Found this book in a Sedona bookstore and I devoured it. I love guides like this that are slick, well-written and have great illustrations, graphs and maps to pore over. Arizona is still my favorite place on earth. Highly recommended for those who wish to familiarize themselves to the state.
