Alyria #2

A Girl in Black and White

Rate this book
My once upon a time didn’t end with happily ever after—but with blood-stained hands and cold blue eyes. The story of my life had been laid beneath my feet since childhood, but until death, I’d never known that road was paved with stones called lies.

In this city of sun and heat, cloaked in dark, both inside and out, I became somebody other than Farm Girl. There was no assassin behind my back. No, my shackles were just as tight but came in a different form.

Like Death’s icy fingers running down my spine, the ones that had gripped me for months, my past haunted my present in the guise of nostalgia. My old chains still left marks on my skin, their owner’s gaze following behind. But he didn’t know I lived. He didn’t know I was so close, that I heard his name spoken every day. That I still hated him. Until my hate started tasting suspiciously different.

One mistake and everything I’d created unraveled. A liar. Corruptor. He stood in front of me now. The air was heavy with expectation, tense with the possibilities of how this would unfold, of what he would do.

But there was always two sides to every story, and maybe in this version, the corruptor wasn’t him, but me.

** I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review and I can’t thank Danielle Lori enough for giving me the opportunity to read her second book as well! XD **

Danielle you are awesome, I hope you know that!!! =)))

This said we can go right to the actual review! There is so much to say that I don’t even know where to begin, as always I’ll try my very best to write a coherent review though. ;-)

"There's something you should know, Grandmother. A lesson to put away in your books." The girl smiled white teeth and blue lips. "Not everyone gets a happily ever after."

The prologue to “A Girl in Black and White” was probably the creepiest prologue I’ve ever read and believe me I’ve read many! *lol* The atmosphere was just amazing and I’m so glad I can say that it stayed that way throughout the entire book! Whilst the first book showed us the multifaceted world of Calamity the second book concentrated on the characters and their interactions. And…

I freaking LOVED it!!!

Seriously, there was so much tension between those different characters and I don’t know how Danielle did it but this book was everything I wanted to read!!! I didn’t even know what I wanted to read but oh boy, did Mrs. Lori hit the mark! *lol*

I loved every single person that was mentioned in the book, from the main characters like Calamity and Weston to the side characters like Henry and Talon. There was so much detail put into them and to read about Calamity’s life in Symbia was more than just intriguing. The idea of the sisterhood provided a good framework for the entire story and even though I was a little confused at the beginning I easily overcame my initial difficulties while I continued to read the book.

The plot:

The second book begins about a year after the massive cliffhanger of “A Girl named Calamity”. During this year Calamity became a part of the sisterhood (some kind of coven) and started her new life in the city of Symbia. As a potential witch she’s supposed to find a suitable match within the next month but with a disgruntled Untouchable Prince on the throne and a rather jealous Titan Prince on the loose this actually turns out to be more than just a little challenge…

The characters:

Spoiler warning!!! If you don’t want to be spoiled you better skip the rest of this review! I warned you! I really did! *lol*

Calamity:

”She was like seeing color for the very first time: her silky hair, the shape of her body, the delicate way she held a butterfly on the end of her fingertips.”

I absolutely loved the new Calamity! After her death she finally began to grow into her magical powers and during this book she was no longer the damsel in distress. I loved that she finally managed to handle the dangerous situations she got herself into and the idea of her being a Shadow was more than just intriguing. I was so happy that she became such a strong character and I was more than just glad that for once she was the one who fooled the men around her! *lol* Considering the ending of the second book I’m pretty certain that her character is going to change even more and I really can’t wait to find out what Danielle Lori has in store for us!!! XD

”I couldn’t blame what I saw on the dark night because I already knew that wasn’t the case: the butterfly on my finger lacked any color. It was black and white – duller somehow than all its surroundings.”

”The breeze blew my hair, tickling the back of my bare shoulder blades – and every inch of my skin felt alive as if one touch would singe me. “He promised not to tell you,” I said quietly.

Weston:

”He looked like a bloody prince if I ever saw one. How had I never noticed the arrogance about him that only a royal could have? Even the way he stood, with his legs slightly spread like he owned the floor I was walking on, screamed prince.”

I still can’t believe that we actually got to read Weston’s POV!!! Now that I know about his internal struggle I was finally able to understand his contradictory actions of the first book! XD It’s clear that he loves Calamity; I mean he even put her body on a pier and set it on fire!!!! Yet he still tries his best to get her out of his way. Considering his “jealous streak” I can see why he doesn’t want her to be in his vicinity once his madness hits, if I’d be Weston I’d be more worried about Calamity’s madness though. *lol* I mean after he freed her of the sisterhood there is nothing that’s going to stop her darkness and I bet she’s going to be even more dangerous than Weston! XD

He flicked a gaze to me: lazy, dark, unsympathetic, inhumane.
“Run.”

”She had asked me if she amused me. The truth was, she was the biggest distraction I’d ever come across. She didn’t amuse me – she captivated me as if I’d never seen a woman before.”

Maxim:

One side of the Untouchable’s mouth quirked up. “Calamity.”
“How you been?”
“Just a little treason here, a little kidnapping there.”
“Sounds busy. I don’t know how you have time to satisfy all the women in your harem.”
He let out an amused breath. “Oh , I promise they’re all taken care of.”

The conversations between Maxim and Calamity are so much fun! *lol* They have some sort of strange camaraderie and I really enjoyed to read about their coincidental encounters. As it seems Calamity is still not over the idea of Maxim’s harem and I loved to read about this running gag! Haha! The intensity of their conversations is amazing and I really hope Maxim is going to be a part of the last book as well! =)

Talon:

The Mad Prince’s voice filled the dark. “What time is it?”

I really thought Talon would be nothing more than a side character but oh boy, was I wrong! XD Turns out he’s more than just important for the future story line! *lol* I know he’s one of the bad guys, but hell I still like him! XD I blame it on my illogical love for interesting villains! ;-P

”I turned around to see Talon, dressed not in the commoner rags he’d worn, but in a costly black jerkin and pants. His long hair was pulled half up, the light in his eyes, mad.”

All told, the cliffhanger at the end of the book killed me and I really can’t wait to read the last instalment!!! Danielle if you read this: PLEASE HURRY UP!!! *LOL*
I want to know how it all ends!!! XD

This book gets four well deserved stars and who knows; maybe the last book will even get five! ;-P

4.75 "there's no black and white in human nature" stars

Calamity Debonair's destiny was marked from her birth and the final predicament we were left with at the end of book 1, now shifted in the alternate world, where we are brought back or brought in, by a very smooth narrative nature of story telling, introducing us with the new world of Calamity's rebirth.
We were born as humans, rebirthed as a Shadow when we came of the age of ten, in a haunting ceremony of blood and death.

She's a witch. A very powerful one, that is yet to uncover all the abundance of it and the ultimate act that makes her a dangerous sort.
I was the face of Alyria's downfall as the girl who could open the seal.

Opening up the seal that would release the magic, the magic that would change the aspect of all living creatures, humans, Titans and those who were of combined origin.

The place Calamity lives in now is Symbia, her mother is alive and her grandmother in hiding (and they are not on speaking terms as when Calamity realized the truth about herself, she realized that all and everything in her life was a lie), as a rebelious act, at nights, she's The Girl in Black, opposing to the Kingdom of Prince Maxim, practicing and experiencing the extent of her new found magic power, the one that links her to the dark side. She's living with the Sisterhood, ironically in a brothel house and the next step, for her and all the other witches, would be taking a pledge - choose a husband, or take one chosen for her.

Calamity has no aspirations to do neither, she's still evoking the memories and flashbacks from one man that she can't quite determine wheather she hates him more or that she hates the fact that she's still attracted to him, inspite the betrayal.

and than he returns, Prince Weston of Wolfson, a Titan, a man that kidnapped her, the man that taunt her, the man that made her experience and think and believe and doubt and than betrayed in the most ultimate final act, to fulfill his ploy...and now he's here with his agenda...and she can't stay away...she's not sure what she feels but she's feeling smth, her magic reacts near him, she senses him every single time, and now, he's the same yet different...and he still taunts her...

but she's equally excited and doubtful yet determined to experience more with him...
yet when she overhears the conversation between Weston and her grandmother, Calamity realizes that yet again, she's been a pawn, she's been betrayed all over again...
My entire life was a lie. Betrayal seeped into my chest, filling it with a bitter burn. The darkness sunk its claws into me, itching, scratching.

and this time, she won't hold back, as she reaches and awakens her full power of revenge
The ground shook, the room plunged into complete darkness as a burst of magic seeped through the floor. My Fate was complete.

Once again, Danielle Lori confirmed what I primarily thought of her writing after finishing A Girl named Calamity. The fluent continuous storytelling, effortless slide of visuals through out her words as she presents the characters, places, events...but most of all, I loved the characterisation span of the heroine, Calamity. She's equally strong and vulnerable, witty, sarcastic and determined, bold. She makes mistakes and decisions based on emotional strike and impulse and she faces the circumstances of her actions. I just loved the way she felt "real" in the most imaginative unreal world.

In the huge ocean of many talented authors of fantasy, you should watch out for yet another.
Looking forward to the next and final installment in Alyria series and then maybe this talented author will shows us, yet another magic of her written words in a different context, another aspect in a different genre, perhaps. Either way, you should give these books a go!

I absolutely begged Danielle Lori for an ARC of this book. I’ve never directly asked an author for an advanced copy and I have every intention of purchasing my own, but knowing this book was completed but not yet available for sale, I kinda went a little crazy.

Showcasing this author’s talents, A Girl in Black and White held the same charm as A Girl Named Calamity except now we are given a deeper look into what the nature of Calamity’s magic might be. I was a tad confused at the beginning because after all…the cliffhanger from book one. However, I was soon caught up in the story and found myself once again unable to set this book to the side.

This is one I believe you should go into blind so I’ll avoid detailing the storyline. I will say that the characters in this book give it a rich, deep taste. And I say taste because it is written so that I not only feel the words, I experience them and can taste them as they roll across the pages. I am enthralled with the world this author has created and the characters that bring it to life.

But holy smokes that cliffhanger! I’m certain this author’s sole purpose in life is to torment me! Be prepared Ms. Lori. There is no rest for the wicked and I intend to stalk you until the final book is released.

In case you haven’t figured it out, I absolutely loved, Loved, LOVED this book!

This review is for an ARC provided by the author but I’ll be darned if I don’t get my own copy just in case magic makes this copy disappear.

Dual POV although the second POV doesn’t come in until later in the book. (Did I forget to say how much I loved getting his POV?)

Ms. Lori is mean. Evil. I mean, who the hell ends the book like that!? *huffs*
description

For that I'm dropping one star. Yes, I'm petty like that.

I loved this book, it gave me the feels. The push and pull almost made me pull my hair out, but the chemistry was of the charts. I truly feel sorry for my man. But you know, he's only human and can't kill all the men that just glance at my way, like a certain Titan. But that possessive Titan. Mhm. *fans herself*
description

The characters did a 180. They're becoming more developed with each book. The plot is spinning and it kept me in suspense. Very intriguing and refreshing plot, IMO.

As for the safety, it was safe for me as I felt there was no cheating, OW/OM drama or love triangle. The stuff in the spoiler, which happened during their separation, was only an afterthought-never shown or written in detail.

Now, I have to wait till November 1st for my HEA. Not a happy camper.

“You came here with the intention to sleep with me, gave us a couple of hours, and then were planning to rush back to pick out a man to marry?”
I sat on the bed, wrapping my sandals up my calves. “Yea, I guess that’s the way it happened.”

CALAMITY'S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THO >>>>
girlie went from elena to gianna and i approve.

i didn't realize how much i needed weston's POV, i mean the way that man pines for her!! ugh the chemistry is so good. also the side characters in this book were top tier.

i know book 3 will probably never be published but mannnn calamity has gotten the short end of the stick one too many times. i want to see her go full unreachable savage in book 3 while weston grovels cause i mean the betrayal....

I was re-reading the previous book, A Girl Named Calamity, waiting for the paperback version of A Girl in Black and White to arrive at my doorstep, when the author kindly sent me an ebook version of it on my mail! yeah for small miracles!

I was a little confused at the beginning of the the book especially because of the way the last book ended. I mean major cliffhanger! But nonetheless that didn't last long and what I was reading were amazing.. I mean the prologue and chapter 1.. geez...goosebumps! This book seemed a lot darker, edgier and a whole lot sexier than the first.
Calamity is still the same snarky, sarcastic, witty girl- just bolder yet vulnerable at the same time. She's badass in this book and I loved that!
Weston.... What Weston lacked in the first book, he made it all up for us in this one! FYI he even talks more in this one hahaha!
Remember the angst...Ahem...OK...Fine... the sexual frustration we felt between Cal and Weston?well... the author didn't just dip her toes into the water.. she went full on- jumped right into the ocean and WE, as readers thoroughly enjoyed it! So,for that thank you, Danielle Lori!
And Oh My God the cliffhanger! We should call Danielle the Queen of Cliffhangers from now on cause that ending! NOT NICE Danielle! You can't do that! Just when you get comfortable- relax and bask into the glory of Cal and Weston. BOOM!! Major Cliffhanger!

The world created by Danielle is so different yet familiar and you are hooked from the get go!It has been an unexpected find, this series, and I am eagerly waiting for the next one!

Note: A copy of the book was graciously given to me by the author.. without any expectation. I only wrote this review because I loved it.

When the author first offered to give me a free copy of her first book, I never expected to fall in love with it so much. The plot and characters intrigued me from the very beginning and now, I'm more in love with them.

Calamity definitely shows some growth in this book and I couldn't have been happier about it. Weston is still my favorite anti-hero. I'm so relieved that we got a few chapters in his POV. It definitely helped a lot, especially when it came to his feelings for Calamity.

We get SOME of our questions answered but are left with ANOTHER CLIFFHANGER!! I know, I know, no one likes a cliffhanger. But let me tell you, that ending left me so SHOCKED!!! I never saw it coming. So insanely good!

Danielle Lori just might become one of my favorite authors if she keeps this up. Her story telling is magnificent!

It breaks my heart that I didn't like the second installment as much as the first one.

My first issue was the narration. It was kinda off and didn't match book 1 at all. Because book 2 does not pick off right after the cliffhanger it was difficult to keep track. One year after the events of book 1, the reader gets served with revelations left and right. It felt like information overload because nothing turned out to be what we were led to believe, and so many changes have happened to the h. It was strange just getting informed about them instead of experiencing it with her. I'm not saying I would have liked reading about that one year in detail, not at all because I like my main couple to be in each other's company as much as possible. I'm just saying that I found this style a bit weird I guess. There were also scenes where the reader suddenly gets thrown into a situation and the h then begins to explain how she got into them. It was confusing as hell.

Thankfully this book had a lot more steamy scenes than the first one (because tension!) but at the same time, it wasn't enough for me. It took a while until Weston appeared again and after them constantly being together in book 1 I had to adapt to their new circumstances a little bit. Their banter was still awesome but I just wanted more Cal&Weston time. The other things like the Sisterhood, her mom, and yes even her other identity as The Girl in Black didn't really interest me.

Now, even though there were things I disliked, I was still very much invested in the couple, and can't wait to find out how everything will turn out for them in the end. Weston's POV was also a nice bonus!

Why? Why do I start series that aren't completed! Why do I do this to myself? I've just finished A Girl in Black and White, the second book in the Alyria series and for some reason I got it into my head that this would be the completion of the story. It wasn't and I'm so frustrated, but more than that I'm devastated.

This series has gotten under my skin, I started this book in the morning and by 7.30 at night I'd finished it. That's how much this series is drawing me in. It has its clutches firmly embedded in my skin and I don't want out EVER!

So without trying to give away any spoilers, Calamity isn't dead, she's now something more that had been lying latent in her. But she's struggling to understand what that something is, although below the surface she's aware of it. There are lots of little things going on that at times I had to take a break, process it and then come back. But that's what made it awesome because all you can think of is this book, of the world that this author has created.

I'm still very much in love with Weston, he's still very much the alpha in the story but it's toned down towards a certain woman, not the alpha part, that's still very much prevalent, but the assassin/bully vibe. It's mellowed marginally but only because of Calamity. He's still ruthless and he's still a killer and only in the book world is it acceptable to be excused for loving a person of this character. But that's the thing I love about stories, anything is possible.

Calamity had changed so much in this but her essence was still there and I loved that her character was till prevalent in this book. Sometimes characters are watered down and I was happy to see this wasn't the case.

I'm truly frustrated though because I really want to read the third book, but it's not out yet. I'll definitely be watching for it.

GUYS!!! this book was absolutely amazing!! and OK I'll stop screaming now but seriously I have the biggest book hangover right now. Usually, I'm a little nervous going into the second book of a book series because sometimes the second book just falls flat for me especially if I loved the first book (which I did) but not with A Girl in Black and White. I would even say that I loved it a llitttlle bit more that the first one and it may have something to do with a certain someone named Weston. Anyways, enough rambling but seriously go read the book now(:

SHAME on me for starting a trilogy without the third book being out.

description

Because honestly, HOLY CLIFFHANGER.

description

I have so many questions from book two that are left unanswered. I finished the book at 12:30 AM and couldn't sleep because of the questions running through my head.

And that isn't even all of them.

I've thoroughly stalked all of the author's pages/medias and have seen nothing about the third release of this book except for the book cover back in November.

it's the way this is one of my favourite fantasy series' and it is so underrated? danielle lori has perfected the art of creating absolutely complex, sexy and entertaining characters and i cannot get enough of them!! Sometimes with fantasy books, it is so difficult to get into the story. It takes a hundred pages to a couple of chapters for me to get invested or even understand what is going on. But with this series? FROM THE VERY START of the first book, i was hooked. The world-building, the character development and romance was perfect; everything read so effortlessly and had me totally engrossed. The creativity it takes to write a whole new world is insane, but a fantasy world? it blows my mind and it just showed how amazing dl is! I hope one day she will continue this series because no one understands how much i fucking adore this world and it's characters. And best believe i bought the paperbacks so fast when i realised it will no longer be in publication!!

i love this series but i'm a fool because i shouldn't have read this again KNOWING that there WILL NOT be a third book.

my heart is in pain, i just need more of weston and calamity PLS

And suddenly your name fits you better than it ever has.

What a fantastic follow up to A Girl Named Calamity.

“Calamity?”
“What?”
A long pause.
“Tick tock.”

The main word that comes to mind when I think of this book (in comparison to the first) is probably: more. More mystery, more answers, more magic, more humor, more steaminess, more Weston (yumm) . . . and all this while it's also a little darker.

There were definitely unexpected elements in this book, and that's one of the things I enjoyed the most, right up there with Weston. Oh, who am I kidding? Nothing beats Weston <3 But that ending, though? While my thirst from book #1 was deliciously satiated by A Girl in Black and White, I'm definitely left wanting . . . well, more. It left me at the edge of my seat and giddy with anticipation, and I really cannot wait to get my hands on book #3.

"My name was Calamity. And soon enough, the whole world would know it."

Ms. Danielle Lori, I freaking loved it!!!

I have been waiting for this and it was so worth the wait!!

I don't want to give too much away but I will say that truths are revealed, pieces start to come together and we find out a little more about who and what Calamity and Weston truly are.

That ending though...wow!! Didn't see that coming!!

If you haven't read A Girl Named Calamity (Alyria #1), please do and then you must read this!!

I will be not so patiently waiting on the next installment!!

When I read "A Girl Named Calamity" I knew it was gonna rub some people the wrong way, cuz Calamity struggles and is confused and so are the readers, she's kept in the dark, she is put down by everyone and treated like she's nothing more than a liability. It pissed me off too but I knew she'd fight back cuz she does every step of the way; even though she's young and naïve, she keeps pushing. A Girl in Black and White is Calamity taking charge, it's her fighting back in every sense of the way all the while keeping intact the goodness of her heart and the trust she has in others.

I didn't know how much I needed this book till the time I read and then reread it the very next day, cuz it wouldn't let me part from it. I loved every single word of it, from Weston's point of view to Calamity's goodness and darkness! I even liked the side characters and kinda felt for Maxim too. The pace of book is on point and some of the stuff that I had missed or didn't make sense to me at the time, hit home when I reread the book; when the secret is out, everything falls into place and you are there like 😱😰😡💩 to the people who did to Calamity what they did!

This book is storytelling at its best, witty, passionate, mysterious and oh so romantic! I have and will always love how Danielle shows the emotions of her characters, they are on point and real

I applaud Danielle for writing this amazing book and giving us the Calamity we didn't know we needed. I remember after the first book, I was at peace, I wanted the second one but I wasn't losing my sleep over it; not with this one, I want the third one pronto!

Maybe someday I'd do an Urdu translation of this book (with Danielle's permission of course) if I ever get the motivation to actually finish something I started, for a change.

I was provided with and ARC in exchange for an honest review.

His eyes narrowed, in almost amused suspicion. “You never knew what was good for you.”
“And you do?” I countered.
He stepped forward, raising his arms above me, and grasping the net-completely boxing me in. My heart thumped at the proximity, my skin vibrating with anticipation.
“I’d say I have a better idea, yea.”

To be honest, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book. I literally read it in one sitting it was so good. Ms. Lori does not disappoint. The fantasy worlds she creates grip your attention as you’re transported into these beautiful realms. Calamity is now part of a Sisterhood and she is to be pledged to another. But something happened to her between the last time we saw her and now. Something dark hides in the shadows and as much as she tries to push it away, it slowly starts to consume her. The tension between Calamity and her Titan Prince, Weston, nearly explodes off the pages. Oh yeah, he's a Prince. Their story is a fairy tale gone twisted in a world of witches, mages, and dark shadows. There are lies and deceit, and a powerful unspoken love that pulls at the heartstrings. By the end of this part of the story all I wanted was more. I highly recommend this magical series and I can't wait for the next book!

OH, wow - I've been waiting for this one a long time and it was soooo worth the wait! While I love the fantasy/magic aspect of this incredibly intriguing story, it is the characters and their relationships that make this a standout tale. Calamity is tough, and she has to be with the knowledge and abilities she has since she knows she can be taken advantage of, but she can't help falling for the man who is haunted by his own dark secrets. This is full of emotional and physical tension that just kept me turning the pages to see how far these two would allow themselves to go, and the ending - well, let's just say I need book three right now.

If you like Sarah J. Maas' series, particularly Throne of Glass, you'll love Calamity's story.

Firstly, if you haven't read the first book A Girl Named Calamity, then get to it!!!
Secondly, you know sometimes when you read a series, the books following the first can be disappointing??? Well... believe me, this is NOT the case in this series!
This book is amazing!! With rich characters and plot twists that will leave your head spinning, you can't help but be sucked into the world the author created. The only disappointing thing about this series so far is that we have to wait for book 3!!!

I was so glad to get started on this book, I just couldn't put it down. There were so many unexpected things in this book. it kept me on my toes and turning the pages just so I could see what was going to happen. I can not wait for the next book, I just have to know what will happen and get the answers to my questions I am left with.

Should be ten stars!! Ms. Lori's epic sequel is even more entrancing with our deepest desires finally coming to fruition just to be betrayed and an unholy alliance exposed! These developments are so poignantly and descriptively written that the deceptive and heartbreaking consequences are literally breath stealing and so emotionally startling that I swear I screamed aloud and swore very unbecomingly. I am so invested in these characters that I felt my heart break and I feel a great deal of trepidation and curiosity for our Titan Prince and the retaliation sure to come in book three!

The ending of this book blew my mind!! I so was not expecting that! What was that?? The pieces are all beginning to fall into place in book two. Calamity's fate, who she really is, and who Weston really is are just a few things that truths are being revealed about. Calamity is not exactly who many think she is. She is infinitely more dangerous in ways. And those who have an inkling of it are out for their own agendas. Sometimes that seems to include Weston. But he is a strange one. He has many layers to peel back to find the real man beneath them. A man long buried under his past and his heritage. But make no mistake, heads will roll if anyone lays a hand on Calamity. The man is as much of an enigma as she is. And some of the supporting characters end up being different than I thought once their motives were revealed. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

I had fun reading this book! The first chapter really threw me. I had to read back to to the first book to see if I remembered the ending correctly I was so confused. I enjoyed the new side to Calamity and her connection with new characters.

The story was hard to follow at times. Lots of shifting thoughts, which made it hard to understand where the scene was going and who was talking. Weston’s point of view came at the right time. I look forward to the next book and how he uses his powers and her blood.

Calamity was a witch. A nieve witch. She reminded me of the story about Goldilocks with a little bit of the big bad wolf from Little Red Riding Hood. I can't lie, I enjoyed the book but not as much as the first. The same repeating pattern continuously occurred. She chased him. He denied her but led her on... Rinse repeat until finally the deed is done then again, it starts. The ending was worth the long read. I'm still debating whether the ending was enough to save this series and make me read the third book. The jury is still out.

This is such an underrated fantasy romance. (Don't let the lame ass titles deceive you.)

I can’t even begin to tell you guys how excited I was to read this book. I had loved A Girl Named Calamity. Loved it. I had high expectations with A Girl in Black and White. Guess, what. This book blew my expectations out of the water.

Calamity came back from the dead. Not a lot was said about how she came back but she did. When she did, she discovered that her grandmother had been lying to her about everything. From why she wore the silver cuffs to her mother to why she was sent out of her home village, to begin with. So saying that she was upset is an understatement. When the book begins, she is living in Symbia with her Sisters. The Sisters are a society of witches. They keep their identities secret and they all go through a ceremony where they are sworn in a Sister. Calamity finds this out when she is handed a letter by her grandmother. She also finds out that her mother was not a prostitute who dared to steal one of the cuffs. Saying that she was upset is an understatement.

Calamity hates Weston with a passion. But hate can mask another emotion very easily, as Calamity finds out. Weston doesn’t know she is alive. So it is only a matter of time that Weston finds out that Calamity is alive. When Weston finds out that Calamity is alive, he goes out of his way to keep her near him and to make her go away. Will they give into their attraction or will they still be avoiding their attraction to each other?

I loved Calamity. Her snarkiness had me laughing throughout the book. She couldn’t keep those snarky remarks to herself. It was like she couldn’t help it. It was awesome. And her “74 Things I Hate About Weston” list was hilarious. I did feel bad for her, though. After she came back to life, she found out that everything she had been told was a lie. When I say everything, EVERYTHING. She was sent to Symbia to be with her mother and join a group of fledgling Sisters. This group not only would pledge together but they were looking for sponsors.

I wasn’t expecting Weston to show up when he did in the book. I guess I should have expected it after Maxim discovered that Calamity was alive. I also wasn’t surprised that he overthrew and killed his father. He came across as someone who would do that. His backstory was very tragic but also very interesting. It made me wonder what was going to happen with him for the rest of the series. I did think it was interesting that he shadowed Calamity as soon as he found out she was alive. Very telling. But, it got even better. The author wrote several chapters from his perspective. I squeed like a teenybopper at her first boy band concert. What I learned from those chapters changed how I looked at him.

You could cut the sexual tension between Weston and Calamity with a knife. Every scene they had together, the sparks flew. I couldn’t wait for them to have sex. Actually, I hoped that they did because the sexual tension was killing me. Not going to say if they did or not…..you need to read the book to find that out.

The end got me. I couldn’t believe the twist in the last chapter. Talk about the ultimate cliffhanger. I was so disappointed when the book ended. Guess I need to read book 3!!

A Girl in Black and White is a suspenseful, sexually charged book that I couldn’t put down. The plot was fantastic. The characters couldn’t have been more 3D if the author tried. They all had layers and I loved seeing those layers peeled back in this book. I wouldn’t recommend this book to anyone who is easily offended by graphic sexual situations, language, and graphic violence. But I would recommend it to everyone else.

Will I reread: Yes

Will I recommend to family and friends: Yes

Age range: Adult

Why: Sex, language, and violence
