Imagine hiking through a quiet forest with a hawk circling above the leafy boughs, beetles crawling across a log, a lizard darting under a fallen leaf, everything peaceful and serene--unless you are an inch tall. Then ants are the size of bulldogs and many times stronger; spiders become giant monsters; snakes are as big and threatening as a freight train barreling off the tracks, and lizards are dragons running amuck.

Hawthorn's Discovery is the story of a young Larkin, a member of a tribe of people one inch tall, facing these very threats in the forest. Hawthorn has gone on his first hunt with other warriors from his tribe to supply the clan with the winter's kill of the giant mooflon (mouse). After the successful hunt, the warriors are attacked by Renegades, brutal enemies who steal their hard-won quarry and capture Hawthorn and his friends to work in their slave mines. Separated from his friends, badly injured, and left to die on a red ant nest, Hawthorn is dramatically rescued--by someone he can't identify from a tribe of which he has never heard. While recovering from his injuries, Hawthorn is bewildered by this new society's total commitment to obeying its god. They seek the Maker's will in all they do, pray about all their needs, and actively love their enemies. Through the Maker's answers to their faithful prayers, their culture is advanced beyond that of the Larkin or the Renegades.

The story reaches its exciting climax as Hawthorn and his Makerian friends enter the Renegade stronghold in a daring rescue of Hawthorn's friends from the Renegade slave mines. With humor and fast-paced adventure, Hawthorn's Discovery promotes good character and the vision of a culture totally dependant on and obedient to their Maker, inspiring believers to seek God more actively in prayer.

I read Hawthorn's Discovery several months ago. This was my first book written by Alan W. Harris. This book was written in an optimistic, hopeful style that promotes belief in Christ and his father God. At first I thought this would be a children's book. It turns out it has suspense and adventure that would be enjoyed by all ages. Thanks Alan Harris for writing Hawthorn's Discovery. I will be reading his other books in the Tales of Larkin series. Overall a really great story and good writing, but I didn't enjoy the references to Jehesus and being bapatized in the story. The names were too close to the real thing, which was distracting and ineffective. I enjoyed the faith promoting messages in the story, but if you are going to share the gospel story, share it instead of disguising it.

My whole family has enjoyed this book more than once. My husband read it to the family and we found the kids begging for "just one more chapter" each night. Now that the kids are older they have each chosen to read it again, and have recommended it to friends. The book is full of adventure, has well developed characters, and teaches a multitude of life/moral lessons. The author has used his talents to reinforce strong Christian Values in a very subtle and comfortable way. I never hesitate to recommend this book to my Non-Christian, friends because the presentation has such a natural flow that it is comfortable for them as well. Dr. Harris has an incredible talent, and I look forward to reading his next novel.

Just because you're little doesn't mean you can't do big things, for Hawthorn is one inch tall and he embarks on an amazing adventure.

This exciting Christian adventure story is fun for the whole family, filled with excitement that will keep everyone turning the pages. What I liked most about it was that the message wasn't preached but shown as the tale unfolds.

If you've read Narnia to your children and they're begging for more, give this fantasy a try!

I was delighted to read Tales of Larkin: Hawthorn's Discovery. Alan W. Harris has created a world where the people are one inch tall. Filled with adventures while dealing with ants and other challenges for people that small, Harris weaves in a spiritual lesson that is applicable to children and adults. This is a great book and a lot of fun!! A must read!
