Morris started his career in 1945 in Le Moustique, creating various covers and illustrations. By the end of the 1940s, Morris met his colleagues Jijé, Franquin and Will. These four artists would be called "The Gang of 4", because they all worked in Jijé's studio at that time. The first episode of Lucky Luke, 'Arizona 1880', was published in L'Almanach Spirou 1947, and was later continued in Spirou. In his early 'Lucky Luke' comics, Morris was greatly inspired by animated cartoons à la Disney.
In 1949, Jijé took Morris and Franquin to the US, where Morris met Jack Davis and Harvey Kurtzman, whom he helped with their plans for Mad Magazine. He also met René Goscinny in the US. In 1955, Morris returned to Europe and collaborated with René Goscinny on 'Lucky Luke'. Goscinny wrote the scenarios of over 35 stories, which led to the great success of the series.

While the Lucky Luke Adventures aren’t as consistently good as the Asterix Adventures, they are well worth following if you are a fan of Goscinny and / or European style comics. The work of Morris (a.k.a. Maurice De Bevere) is instantly recognizable, of course.
It’s a shame there isn’t more of this kind of thing around in English; the Oumpah-Pah adventures (Oumpah-Pah, le Peau-Rouge Tome 1) have long since ceased being published in English, as have Morris’s own Rantanplan (La Mascotte (Rantanplan #1)) books (which were a spin-off of the Lucky Luke books and based on Rin Tin Tin). At least Cinebooks is making an effort: in addition to Lucky Luke they are printing English editions of Iznogoud (The Wicked Wiles of Iznogoud: Iznogoud Vol. 1).
Back to the issue at hand: this particular Lucky Luke adventure was a bit of a letdown compared to the ones I read previously. That doesn’t make it a “bad” book by any means, just not as hilarious as, say, Ma Dalton or The Wagon Train: Lucky Luke 9. The colouring also seems to be a bit inconsistent; with some of the panels being presented in monochrome (all orange or all pink, for example).
To be completely honest, I can’t remember whether my other Lucky Luke books have similar colouring problems so it’s not that big a deal. This is still an easy three, to three-and-a-half stars...

Hatfields und McCoys
An diese beiden verfeindeten Familien, die sich in den 1880er Jahren in der Wildnis der Appalachen gegenseitig befehdeten, muß man unweigerlich denken, wenn man in dem Lucky-Luke-Abenteuer Familienkrieg in Painful Gulch (1971) miterlebt, wie sich die segelohrigen O’Haras mit den rot- und riesennasigen O’Timmins auf eine Art und Weise bekämpfen, die das Alltagsleben der kleinen Stadt Painful Gulch beinahe unmöglich macht. Ständig gibt es Schießereien, bei denen aufgrund der miserablen Schießkünste der beiden Familien außer Hähnen und Kühen keinerlei Opfer zu beklagen sind, es werden Gebäude in die Luft gesprengt, und aus Angst, für einen rotnasigen O’Timmins gehalten zu werden und dem Zorn der O’Haras anheimzufallen, betrinkt sich auch niemand mehr nach Herzenslust.
Anfangs ist Luke noch milde amüsiert ob der Vorgänge in der Stadt und versucht sogar, Frieden zwischen den zwei Clans zu stiften, was ihm jedoch mislingt. Als er dann seiner Wege reiten möchte, fliegt die Brücke, die er und Jolly Jumper überqueren, in die Luft, und er fängt an, die Fehde persönlich zu nehmen. Dieser Streit muß einfach beigelegt werden, und Lucky Luke glaubt auch schon, eine Idee zu haben, wie dies gelingen könnte.
Familienkrieg in Painful Gulch stammt aus der großartigen Schaffensperiode von Morris, eigentlich Maurice dem Bevere, und René Goscinny und erfüllt dementsprechend die höchsten Erwartungen, die man an ein Comic aus der Lucky-Luke-Reihe eben hegen kann. Ein liebenswertes zeichnerisches Detail sind beispielsweise die von Patronenkugeln durchlöcherten Ohren des Familienpatriarchen der O’Haras, der sich, wie auch alle anderen an dem Streit Beteiligten, gar nicht mehr daran erinnern kann, wie diese Fehde überhaupt entstanden ist. Ein köstlicher Moment ist zudem das Auftauchen des städtischen Totengräbers, der an Luke herantritt, um ihn darum zu bitten, wenn er keine Versöhnung zwischen den Parteien herbeiführen könne, die Streithähne doch wenigstens in der Kunst des Schießens zu unterweisen, denn er müsse ja schließlich auch irgendwie leben. Ein weiterer Höhepunkt ist der Wutausbruch des greisen O’Haras, der die O’Timmins daran hindern will, beim Löschen des Brandes auf der O’Hara-Farm zu helfen, denn schließlich gehöre der Brand ganz allein den O’Haras.
Dieses Abenteuer, das Luke zwischenzeitlich vor echte Herausforderungen stellt, endet sympathischerweise mit einem erfolgreichen Appell an die Vernunft der Frauen in den beiden Familien, und es zeigt darüber hinaus in bestechender Manier die Absurditäten, zu denen sich starrsinnige Feindseligkeit und gegenseitiger Haß zuweilen mit verheerenden Folgen für das Gemeinwesen versteigen können. Zudem fällt wieder einmal die Feigheit der Stadtbewohner auf, die Lucky Luke zwar zum Bürgermeister wählen, damit er den Konflikt beilegt, die ihm aber jedesmal, wenn es droht, brenzlig zu werden, Steine in den Weg legen.
Alles in allem ein nachdenklich stimmendes, zwischenzeitlich schonungslos pessimistisches, aber durchweg witziges und unterhaltsames Abenteuer um den Mann, der schneller zieht als sein löcheriger Schatten.

The original duo tomes are clearly the best of all. It's refreshing to see Luke with a cigarette always in his mouth instead of that stupid grass-flower thingy that he later got relegated to.

When Morris is at his best, It's an absolute joy to read the narration and watch the beautiful details all around the story.
Lucky luck sets foot in "Painful Gulch, city of joy and peas" and just from the beginning, he is being threatened to show the shape of his ears or his nose everywhere he goes.
Nobody knows the reasons for the ancestral hate and rivalry between two big families of the region, O'Timmins with big red noses and O'Hara with big wingnut ears, but when an O'Hara meets an O'Timmins, he shoots at him and vice versa.
The irrationality and craziness of the two clans make Lucky pass on this episode. He starts singing his song while riding to the dawn, but the bridge he's passing by explodes and makes this thing personal for him to stay and put this mess together.
Aside from the rushed ending of the story, I found the book very appealing to read and made me hear the sound of my laughs several times throughout the tale. This is a story of foolishness and idiocy of the people who are blinded by hate and once again, we can celebrate the great collaboration of Morris and René and the enjoyment they brought to us.

Sewaktu cari-cari judul bekas di lapak online, mendadak tergiur untuk sekalian ambil komik ini. Saya memang lebih berkiblat ke Jepang kalau soal komik, tetapi kadang bisa cocok juga dengan komik Eropa, termasuk soal petualangan si koboi koplak yang bisa 'menembak lebih cepat daripada bayangannya' ini.
Inti konfliknya, sebagaimana dituturkan melalui 'adegan mandi' yang epik berikut:
Ngakak saya setiap lihat reaksi Luke yang kejang-kejang gara-gara kesablengan dua keluarga absurd dalam volume ini. Seperti biasa, gambar berwarnanya enak dilihat, dan saya suka efek visual pada klimaks cerita saat semua karakternya sempat berubah warna dari merah kemudian biru. Awal ceritanya menjanjikan, sayang akhirnya terasa agak dicepatkan, dan tidak begitu ada karakter yang berkesan (*selain pemilik jasa peti mati yang suka harap-harap-jahat dari konflik keluarga tersebut).
Paling tidak, lumayan membuat saya makin bernostalgia cari judul-judul LL lainnya!

Un de mes préférés !
Lucky Luke se retrouve confronté à deux familles qui se livrent une lutte sans merci. Heureusement, ces deux familles (très, mais alors très nombreuses) tirent très, mais alors très mal, ce qui évite le bain de sang.
Complètement absurde dans leur opposition, les deux clans ont été dotés par les deux auteurs de physiques outranciers. Les O'Timmins ont un énorme nez rouge, tandis que les O'Hara portent de grandes oreilles rondes.
Tout cela fait que l'album est une réussite, c'est du très grand Goscinny / Morris.

Esta ha sido una de mis aventuras favoritas de Lucky Luke. Los chistes estuvieron muy graciosos y la tensión en la historia se sintió en cada momento. La forma en cómo la trama se desarrolla se siente que fue pensada de principio a fin varias veces. No esperes desarrollo de personajes, pues para eso no es lo que lees Lucky Luke. LL es un personaje plano que ayuda al resto de la historia a moverse, los que de verdad vieron un verdadero crecimiento, fueron los rivales de Painful Gulch y de verdad se sintió, aunque abrupta, tuvo mucho sentido.
Los paneles de Morris como siempre llevando a muchos otros artistas a la escuela en cuanto a composición de paneles y secuencias. Y ese humor slapstick que no se supone que debería funcionar en historietas, pero se hizo más que posible, excelente.
Otra espectacular historia de Lucky Luke que nos trae una trama distinta a la de muchos héroes de la historia. Léela seas fan del personaje o no.

Dit album is ongetwijfeld geïnspireerd door de historische Hatfield–McCoy feud. Lucky Luke komt midden in een vete tussen twee families terecht, gemakkelijk herkenbaar aan respectievelijk hun grote rode neuzen en hun flaporen. Voor hij het weet is ie burgemeester van het onfortuinlijke stadje en staat verzoening der twee families op zijn agenda... Een vermakelijk Lucky Luke-album, maar niet een van zijn beste.

Ωραία ιστορία με ήρωα φυσικά τον φτωχό και μόνο κάου-μπόι Λούκυ Λουκ. Αυτή τη φορά ο Λούκυ Λουκ περνάει τυχαία από μία πόλη και βρίσκεται ανάμεσα στο φοβερό πόλεμο μεταξύ δύο οικογενειών!! Είναι η πρώτη φορά που βλέπουμε τον Λούκυ Λουκ να επιχειρεί να φύγει αδυνατώντας να τα βγάλει πέρα με τις δύο οικογένειες. Τελικά επιστρέφει στην πόλη εκλέγεται δήμαρχος και αποφασίζει να τελειώσει οριστικά τη βεντέτα των δύο οικογενειών...

Το συγκεκριμένο κόμικ δεν το είχα διαβάσει στα παιδικά μου χρόνια και ομολογουμένως με έκανε λίγο να αισθανθώ όπως όταν διάβαζα Lucky Luke εκείνη την εποχή. Παρόλα αυτά, όταν είσαι ενήλικας τα βλέπεις τα πράγματα με πιο...κριτική ματιά, και αυτή η ιστορία πάσχει λίγο στο τέλος της, το οποίο είναι αρκετά βεβιασμένο. Ίσως το φορμά των 48 σελίδων να μη δούλεψε για τον Goscinny αυτή τη φορά.

πάλι βεβιασμένο χάππυ εντ, αν και υπάρχουν αρκετά πετυχημένα καλαμπούρια. Εν αντιθέσει όμως με άλλους Λούκυ Λουκ, δεν έχει τόσους επιτυχημένους δευτερεύοντες χαρακτήρες
