Everything you need to know about the Empire and Rebel Alliance from the classic Star Wars universe can be found in this one sourcebook -- from weapon and ship statistics to information on non-player characters. Han Solo, the Death Stars, TIE interceptors, Princess Leia, stormtroopers, Luke Skywalker . . . it's all here in detail.
Bill Slavicsek's gaming life was forever changed when he discovered Dungeons & Dragons in 1976. He became a gaming professional in 1986 when he was hired by West End Games as an editor. He quickly added developer, designer, and creative manager to his resume, and his work helped shape the Paranoia, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, and Torg roleplaying games. He even found some time during that period to do freelance work for D&D 1st Edition. In 1993, Bill joined the staff of TSR, Inc. as a designer/editor. He worked on a bunch of 2nd Edition material, including products for Core D&D, Dark Sun, Ravenloft, and Planescape. In 1997, he was part of the TSR crowd that moved to Seattle to join Wizards of the Coast, and in that year he was promoted to R&D Director for D&D. In that position, Bill oversaw the creation of both the 3rd Edition and 4th Edition of the D&D Roleplaying Game. He was one of the driving forces behind the D&D Insider project, and he continues to oversee and lead the creative strategy and effort for Dungeons & Dragons.
I bought the "Rebellion Era Sourcebook" hoping that it would provide some entertaining ideas for the Wizards of the Coast Star Wars RPG. Sadly, the book, while a decent summary of the old Star Wars Expanded Universe during the period of the Rebel Alliance, doesn't come with nearly enough game content. Only for completionists, collectors or serious enthusiasts.
I resisted reading this book for 15 years, because it seemed like just a re-hash of a dozen-or-so books from the West End Games RPG. now I've read it, and it does a *great* job of condensing info from books such as the Star Wars Sourcebook, some Galaxy Guides (movie trilogy, Yavin & Bespin, Mos Eisley, Fragments from the Rim, Criminal Organizations), Death Star Technical Manual, Imperial Sourcebook, Rebel Alliance Sourcebook, and more! And it also throws in some EU entries on the Ssi-ruuk, Imperial Inquisitors, Blackhole, Dark Troopers, Jabba's Swoop Gang, Black Sun, and lots more.
All laid out into easy-to-read, one-page entries (mostly). I sometimes question the selection of obscure stuff over better-known information, such as an entry about the inventions of Renn Volz (?) and not entries for Artoo & Threepio, or landspeeders/snowspeeders for example. Also, only THE PHANTOM MENACE was out at the time of release, so details about Palpatine's rise to Emperor and the extinction of the Jedi are vague. The best feature is a string of adventure/campaign ideas that run along the bottom of most pages. These sidebars provide a lot of new info and tips on how to run a campaign and use recurring villains, etc. all grouped by theme and following the general timeline of the movies.
Recommended as a sourcebook for GMs and players who don't own the dozens of more detailed books from West End Games. Also recommended for GMs who need ideas to help them setup and start campaigns and adventures set during the original trilogy.
