Star Trek: The New Adventures: Volume 5

Rate this book
Follow the adventures of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the timeline based on the new movies as they continue their five-year mission of discovery into unchartered space.

In "Deity" the crew arrives at the previously unexplored planet Banks-216, sending an away team that becomes exposed when a massive alien ship arrives in orbit. Then, Captain Kirk and the crew are about to encounter their strangest discovery yet... themselves, in the Mirror-Mirror storyline "Live Evil." Plus, the ship faces off with a renegade faction of Orions intent on disrupting the truce between their species and the Federation in "Reunion." In "Legacy of Spock" the elder Spock joins the last survivors of Vulcan to search the galaxy for a new home. And in "Connection" the crew come into contact with a ship that looks eerily familiar. Collects the final 13 issues, #48-60, of the first Star Trek ongoing series from IDW.

This book is *chef's kiss* in terms of the Kelvin comics. It is the pinnacle of them. It is a bit confusing that the Enterprise crosses over with a slightly different version of Mirror Universe than we saw previously, but this story is superior to the other. We also get a good wrap-up with Gaila, which was needed. There is a BEAUTIFUL story about Spock Prime adjusting to his new world.

But the best is, of course, the crossover between the original Prime Timeline Enterprise and the Kelvinverse, in which characters swap places at random. It is hilarious, but also explores how different the Kelvinverse characters are from the Prime timeline. A wonderful story. Definitely worth a read.

the series really did get better as it went so it's a relief that it ended on a high note. I wish the final story had another issue to really play with the TOS and AOS crew differences, but just seeing all of those faces together was pretty nice.

*sidenote: I'm not sure how the red matter stuff plays with the red matter stuff from the beginning of this run and I also find it genuinely frustrating that you can't tell if the Mirror Universe stuff in the second outing is a continuation from the previous Kelvin take on the Mirror setting OR if this is actually ANOTHER Mirror Universe, buuuuuuttttttt it wouldn't feel like AOS if the world building wasn't slipshod and contradictory

Perhaps the best of these 5 volumes, and an excellent conclusion to the series. Artwork was much more consistent throughout this volume than in any previous one, with only one or two instances of the strange choice to have a background character directly facing the "reader" that has been persistent in all the volumes.
