A very respectful tribute to the DC creations of Jack Kirby as written and drawn by various contemporary comic book professionals. Supplemented by some short essays on Kirby and his characters by long-time associate Mark Evanier this collection (originally published as one-shot specials in 2017 to commemorate what would have been Kirby's 100th birthday).
While I enjoyed each story, some are more memorable than others. The stand-outs for me were The Orion and the New Gods story written and drawn by Walt Simonson; Howard Chaykin's WWII team-up story featuring both the Newsboy Legion and Boy Commandos; and a Simon/Kirby Sandman story by Dan Jurgens and Dan Bogdanove.

Jack Kirby 100th Celebration Collection is a compilation celebrating and honoring what would have been the one hundredth birthday of Jack Kirby (2017). This tribute honors Jack Kirby with all the creations he had created over the years by influential writers and pencilers that drew inspiration from him.

This anthology collects The Sandman Special, The New Gods Special, The Newsboy Legion and the Boy Commandos Special, The Manhunter Special, and The Darkseid Special, which were all written and penciled to celebrate the King's one hundredth birthday and many reprintings of original Jack Kirby's stories written and penciled by him.

Jack Kirby was an American comic book artist, writer, and editor, widely regarded as one of the medium's major innovators and one of its most prolific and influential creators. His creations and ideas have shaped the DC Universe irrevocably and made characters that are memorable and fun to read. Kirby's notable works includes: Captain America, Fantastic Four, the Fourth World titles, Hulk, Karmandi, Manhunter, Newsboy Legion, X-Men, and many, many, more.

For the most part, the contribution to this anthology was rather well constructed. Focusing on the characters and story lines that Jack Kirby either created or inspired. One could read and feel the admiration that these creators have for Jack Kirby. While some were better than other, in short, overall they were wonderfully made.

All in all, Jack Kirby 100th Celebration Collection is a wonderful selection of one-shots in commemoration, celebration, and tribute to one of the most influential creators in comic book history. In short this is a love letter to Jack "King" Kirby and his six decade career.

This book is a very enjoyable tribute to Jack Kirby. The best of the bunch really surprised me too: I wouldn't call Jack's 70s Sandman a favorite, but Dan Jurgens and Jon Bodganove authored a beautiful tale with the only Kirby Kollage in the book and a heartwarming final page that reminds us of Jack's importance.

The OMAC story by Paul Levitz and Phil Hester and the Sandman story by Dan Jurgens and Jon Bogdonave are especially tremendous.

I have a confession. Please don't hate me for it. I am a huge comic book fan but I have never understood the reverence paid to Jack Kirby. I appreciate the fact - in the sixties - he was one of the best artists and I appreciate the fact that - with Stan Lee - he helped create some of the most iconic super heroes ever. But there is this reverence of "Kirby was the most creative person ever to grace the comic book world" that I don't get. When left on his own to create the New Gods, Mister Miracle, The Demon, Kamandi and without the gifts of Stan Lee to help him I was unimpressed. YES the ideas were creative but the coherence, the fleshed out characters, the stories that made sense just weren't there. I love the character of Mister Miracle but I read those first Kirby issues and they are hard to get through.

And here we have a celebration of Kirby with writers and artists putting their spin on his characters. Again - I was underwhelmed. The first story pits Black Racer (the stupidest character ever? Death is a Black man on SKIES?!) against Mister Miracle. Some great art but a silly story that is hard to follow. We have OMAC, we have Demon, we have Orion, we have Apokolypse, we have Sandman in two versions, we have the original Manhunter. Some fun art and nice stories but nothing that I will remember in a few months.

If you are a Kirby fan then this is a book you should buy - but for most of us, these characters are not particularly interesting. They had creativity and potential but ultimately they were never developed fully as characters who we care about. This collection doesn't add to that. As a way to see it done RIGHT - check out Bug: Adventures of the Forager (another Kirby creation) revisited by Mike Allred.

This is a wild ride, just like most of Kirby’s komics were. Some of its good, some not so much, but overall, it’s a wonderful heartfelt tribute to the King’s endless creativity and his enormous influence on the industry and the creators who make it happen.

In this collection of homages to Kirby, we deal with a few of the many creations of this legend. From the vast intergalactic epicness of the New Gods, to the more grounded and down to earth Newsboy Legion.

To me, Jack Kirby is the foundation of modern day superhero comics. I mean, if you really think about it, we are still dealing and working with the ideas that he had back when he was creating, and still using those stories as a foundation. He literally built the stage for modern day story telling in comics, and was able to not only create a whole mythology around these characters and settings, but was also was able to invoke a certain tone for those story's to be told. Most stories, especially the ones dealing with characters that were created by the King himself, are constantly being compared still to his level. His legacy is something that is so prevalent even to this day, that we are still comparing modern day writers and artists to his work. It's pretty incredible if you think about it.

This collection itself is hit and miss. Some stories are better than others. Some of the writing is a bit "of it's time" - as they brought on Mark Evanier to give some authenticity to these stories, and some of the art isn't up to par to Kirby (in my opinion). However, there are some great stories, and to me, my personal favorite were the Sandman stories, which were really quite touching and a great way to close the volume.

Ultimately, this collection is just a celebration and a reminder of the greatness of Jack Kirby. There are certainly better Kirby books to read than this collection, but it's a good way of paying tribute to one of the greats - nay, one of the Gods of comics. Long live the King.

An awesome collection of homages and remixes of lots of Kirby characters that don't normally get a lot of time and space; Black Racer, Darkseid, Mister Miracle, the Newsboy Legion, OMAC, and so on. Mark Evanier's bridge materials are really heartfelt and fun to read, and the sheer number of creators involved in here makes it fun to keep reading this.

I could not have enjoyed this more. Such a wonderful dedication to an amazing man and just some great stories. I did not enjoy seeing all the Trump stuff but Jack would have gone after him just as hard.

A cool idea that looks good for the most part, but none of the stories have any room to breathe and all amount to a good but forgettable time.
