Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Christina Dodd, whose first contemporary novel Just the Way You Are was hailed as "lively, sexy...nothing short of a success" (Publishers Weekly), presents her new novel featuring the Prestcott sisters.

As the middle child, Pepper Prescott's rebellious nature helped her survive when her parents disappeared and she and her siblings were sent to different foster homes around the country. Now an independent young woman, Pepper finds herself on the run after witnessing a shooting. Fearing for her life, Pepper flees to the only place she ever considered home and is shocked to find her old lover, Dan Graham, living on the remote mountain ranch. A battle-hardened ex-Special Forces soldier,

Dan no longer strikes Pepper as a man she can trust with her secrets, her life, and her love. But as long-simmering desires flare into a deep, sensual passion, Pepper realizes the only way she can reclaim her life is to ally herself with the enigmatic warrior who's willing to help fight for her future by solving the mysteries of her past -- and making her his wife today.

Readers become writers, and Christina has always been a reader. Ultimately she discovered she liked to read romance best because the relationship between a man and a woman is always humorous. A woman wants world peace, a clean house, and a deep and meaningful relationship based on mutual understanding and love. A man wants a Craftsman router, undisputed control of the TV remote, and a red Corvette which will make his bald spot disappear.
When Christina’s first daughter was born, she told her husband she was going to write a book. It was a good time to start a new career, because how much trouble could one little infant be?
Ha! It took ten years, two children and three completed manuscripts before she was published. Now her suspense, paranormal, historical, and mystery novels have been translated into 30 languages and sold more than 15 million copies in print. Praised for her “brilliantly etched characters, polished writing, and unexpected flashes of sharp humor that are pure Dodd” (Booklist), her award-winning books have landed on numerous Best of the Year lists and, much to her mother's delight, Dodd was once a clue in the Los Angeles Times crossword puzzle. She lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest, where her 700 lavender plants share the yard with her husband’s various “Big Projects,” including a treehouse, zipline, and their very own Stonehenge.

What's with the annoying heroines in the last few books I read??

This is the story of Pepper, Hope's sister from the previous book and the wild child of the family. Pepper has made running away an art form and her experience with it proves useful when she witnesses a murder and flees in danger of being killed herself. She runs back to the only foster home that felt like home, and there she unexpectedly meets Dan again, the boy she was in love with before she run away.

While initially I was sympathetic about Pepper's less than ideal past and interested in what seemed to be her strong character, my patience with her waned more and more as the story went on, until I was completely out of it shortly before the climax.

Dan, on the other hand, was a pretty great character. He knows what he wants and he attempts to use logic and tries to understand her, poor man.

And don't get me started on her idiotic opinions about her family!

I really wanted to read a good story that would give me lots of warm and fuzzies but sadly this one failed to deliver... Hopefully I'll have better luck with the next book of the series, Close to You.

I didn't have high hopes for this book, after being somewhat disappointed with the first in the series. I think Ms. Dodd's writing style is nice, interesting, even humorous and realistic. But there's something that feels lacking in both books of her's I've read. In the first one, the ending sort of felt rushed and fell apart for me. In this one I would say it suffered the same fate. For about the first half of the book, I enjoyed a great deal of it, the story line is well thought out, intriguing, but after a point it feels as though the story is some sort of giant juggling act and some of the balls get dropped. I'm not sure what exactly could be fixed, but it just doesn't seem as tight or well-controlled as the first half. I hope this isn't a common occurrence in her books, as I rather like her otherwise.

I also probably liked this a lot better because Dan the hero is Special Forces Army. I am a sucker for military men! The relationship between Pepper and Dan was great, again for the first half of the book, then it went all over the place and I was annoyed. There's a part where Pepper is running away, once again, and Dan totally calls her on it, and in a fit of anger let's her have it. I loved this! Pepper deserved the dressing down, she was being totally cowardly and she needed to be put in her place. Unfortunately, Pepper twists it to make him feel bad because he's suppose to love her and can't talk to her that way. This is where the book really began to lose me. She was running away! The whole rest of the book she held this against him, and he let her! Coward was running away from danger, after promising to let Dan help her, to let Dan protect her, and she was going to run away and screw up the operation, putting herself and several others in great danger. He literally tackles her to keep her from running, and when he calls her out, Pepper someone turns it on him, as he much not love her, and she was only leaving to protect him. He has to beg for forgiveness and she still refuses to hear him out. A month goes by, she finally decides she can't live without him, and runs back to him. No words are spoken, no regret for treating each other that way, they just agree they are two wounded souls who need each other. Whatever and good luck with that.

There is one more in the series, I want to read it, hoping third time is the charm, and also to solve the mystery of what really happened to the parents and why the children were scattered like seeds in the wind, and what the town of Hobart, Texas is really hiding. God I hope I'm not disappointed by it, please let it be something really seedy and evil and well plotted. Is that too much to ask for?

I am seriously disappointed!! I don't even know what to say... The story wasn't the problem it had great potential (that earned 1 star). But there was no connection with the characters for me. The writing felt disjointed. The heroine drove me crazy, I never new what she really wanted she was all over the damn place! The ending was absolute crap, had I been invested in the relationship between Pepper and Dan it would have really pissed me off!

The only redeeming qualities here where that I got to see Hope, Zach and Gabriel again (from book 1), and the reuniting between Pepper and her family finally made me feel something (this earned star #2).

I'm mad mostly because I'm actually invested in the story thats weaved throughout this series about the family and their finding each other. I also want to know what really happened to their parents... But that means I have to read book 3, and I barley made it through this book!! At 35% I started skimming just to get through it. It's the writing here thats the problem for me. I don't understand how I could give book 1 4 stars but dislike the writing in book 2 so much that I can't make a connection with the characters??

Sorry, but sadly no recommendation here.

Almost Like Being in Love (Lost Hearts #2)
by Christina Dodd

Romantic Suspense / Contemporary Romance

description
Witness to a murder, Pepper Prescott (25) flees a killer, leaving her home, her business, and the false identity she’s spent years cultivating. She runs to the only place she’s ever felt safe—the small mountain town of Diamond, Idaho, where she met the boy who had captured her heart, and taught her body to love…until she turned her back on him in anguish and shame, leaving him without a backward glance.

I finished this story but for some reasons Pepper seemed to annoy me most of the time with her stupid acts and she was just too prickly to warm up to. Dan was no better. I was also annoyed the way POVs were jumping and the ending seemed too rushed.

I liked this better than the first, whatever the first book had, this book contained twice as much. The suspense never let up once Pepper ran for safety in a little town in Idaho, where she fatefully met her old flame Dan Graham. Pepper is the opposite of her sister in attitude and physical looks, she's definitely stronger and she matched perfectly with Dan. There is little humor in this book but I still enjoyed their arguments. The drama and their life-defining moments brought tears, and their love for each other was just strengthened by their experiences. Their love scenes were sizzling and over the top. Both of them are wounded people who found comfort with each other and filled each other's missing piece. When Pepper reunited with Gabriel and Hope, it was really emotional. She's very lucky to be loved wholeheartedly by a man whose soul was almost ripped apart by her. There's a happy ending for everyone until we wait for the next and final book in this series.

Dodd has a great and very detailed way of describing scenery and settings. Brings them to life quite well. Certainly at times I am impatient, and may skip over a bit of the landscape portrayal here and there but it really is well done. I enjoyed Pepper; poor thing, if it's not one thing going wrong in her life, it's another. Dan wasn't bad either. Although the physical description of him came so late in the book I kept picturing him as a tough dark haired soldier type so it was jarring to realize later he was blonde. And he kept morphing between the two versions I held of him in my head.

Book has one mildly pushing the border of 'rapey' scene, not too much so, in terms of offending anyone, in my opinion but maybe to some. Usually I just skim and skip when authors leave the story to portray their sometimes boring and repetitive sex scenes but I almost burst out laughing at this line-

"His joy arrow pointed right at the fly of his slacks.”

Umm are you for real? If we're gonna use ridiculous euphemisms like that can't we instead just keep things PG and skip the physical portrayal altogether? Sheesh, I had to re-read that just to believe the words "Joy Arrow" were really what I was seeing in print. If that's where things are heading what's next ... the "Stick of Supreme Satisfaction"? "Rod of Rapturous Ravishing"?

One might feel a little cheated out of 'Pepper's Story' if coming from the much more cheerful romp-like, zany and oft illogical atmosphere of the first book in the series. The style and type of story is remarkably different. Not sure I appreciated that their romance, the birth and charm part of it anyway, was over and off-scene from the get go, since they had been high school sweethearts, still tortured by tragic (eh, minimally tragic, if that) love for each other to the point where no one else would do. A tad too much inner dialogue of the "I shouldn't fall in with him/her again, I must resist, she/he destroyed me the last time" variety on both their parts. And cheesy overdone 'surging desires'.

Also could have done without the melodramatic ghostly warning while she read the last letter left to her. But all in all, the sense of being stalked, of waiting to be attacked was conveyed well. Not precisely a 'light' read, as there's more a a suspense vibe. Very different from the first in the series, seems stand alone really. Added nothing to the overarching mystery.

I disliked the ending of the book with all the begging for forgiveness Dan had to do for coming to a more than understandable conclusion under the circumstances. It's not like Pepper didn't give him past basis for his assumptions. She really had no right to the high road on that one. And she was too darn stubborn and really just super annoying. Reminded me of that "Do you want to be 'right' or do you want to be happy?" axiom. Worst part was that she wasn't even right. You just wanted to tell her to "get over yourself brat". A solid enough attention holding read overall.

This is the second book in a trilogy about 3 sisters and a brother whose family was split up when they were just children and teens. Their parents died in a car crash and were accused of having stolen money.

I read the first one in this trilogy last year and although it had some flaws I enjoyed it enough to pick the other 2 books.

Pepper is the middle sister and at the age of 8 she was put in foster care and away from her siblings. She has survived by using false identities and finding jobs as a landscape gardener.

After attending a book signing by a famous author that she much admires she is the witness of a murder. The famous author, who is also a military general is accused by her aide of selling information to the terrorists and kills him in cold blood.

On the run after having been spotted Pepper returns to the ranch where she lived for a few years as a teen. She discovers that the woman who was her foster mother as died and her former boyfriend is around with his own agenda. Contrary to what usually happens in most books I’ve read lately I thought the suspense subplot was very weak. Pepper spends a lot of her time on the ranch worrying about the general being after her but there’s no sign of the general or any danger for a long time.

Also Dan was there as part of a plot to lure some terrorists but these don’t show up for most of the book. So basically it’s just the 2 of them and their recollections from the past. I think this part dragged a bit and they were too angry and didn’t seriously talked about what was upsetting them for too long. And when they do, they get mad at each other in a way that I thought was just to keep them apart for a while longer.

So actually there were 2 problems that made me give this one a C+: the suspense subplot needed to be more important to the story, if they were in actual danger it would be easier to believe they would bond and only trust each other and one thing leading to another; it seemed weird to me that they just went back to lusting after each other after 9 years while still not talking or trusting the other.

We already know from book 1 that Hope, the big sister, is trying to find the rest of the family and that there is more their parents accident than what was revealed at the time. So there’s a reunion when the family finds Pepper and I guess the rest will be explained on book 3.

Taking a break from rings and books for work.

This was a fairly enjoyable read, but it did not grab me the same way the first one did. This may partly be due to the fact that I didn't have much time so read it in bits and pieces rather than in one fell swoop. Although Pepper was a promising character, once she got to the ranch things felt rather stagnant and claustrophobic... endless sequences of "I want him but it's a terrible idea" start to feel repetitive after a while. The flashes to the family in Boston were blurry and rather steeped in stereotypes without the depth necessary to feel the fondness for those stereotypes which grew in the first book. Glad to have read it, but not sure I need to read the third. I'm usually more impressed by Dodd's writing.

I'm not generally a contemporary romance fan, but Christina Dodd is one of my favorite historical romance authors so I've given a few of her modern books a try. Almost Like Being in Love is the second in her "Lost Texas Heart Trilogy" and though it wasn't as enjoyable as the first - Just the Way You Are - it was a decent read ... my time period of choice, however, remains the 18th-19th centuries.

Ugh! Awful characters, treating each other like crap.

Pepper is the most unpleasant person once this story gets going. She doesn't have a chip on her shoulder, she has a whole freak'n boulder! And she seems to go out of her way to misunderstand people and assign ill intent to anything anyone says.

Dan is big pushy a..hole! No means no...unless you are really sure she wants then just keep on going until she gives in. This is the last kind of intimate scenes I want to read.

The premise was interesting, but the story was poorly execute. Blech!

The continuing story of the lost Prescott sisters. This one had more of a romantic suspense storyline. I like reuniting high school sweethearts stories and this one was sweet. They neither one had really gotten over the other one. The suspense part was nice and pretty well plotted. The emotional reconnection of the hero and heroine was solid and believable. I liked this just as well on my second reading as I did when I read it when it first came out.

Jackie Porter (aka Pepper Prescott) has had a difficult life after the death of her parents and the distribution far and wide of her siblings. She’s been through multiple foster homes and ran away from most of them. When she finds the author of a book that helped her put her life on track, ‘Jackie’ is thrilled to take her copy to be signed. She decides after sharing her story with General Napier to buy another copy for her most successful foster mother but the line is too long to allow her to get it signed. She has a business appointment. When she races back to the bookstore, it’s closing. Taking initiative, she hopes to connect with the General in the parking garage. ‘Jackie’ witnesses a murder. Because of her troubled juvenile history and her alias, she is sure no one will believe her witness statement, so she runs, dropping her already signed book behind her. It won’t take the Army long to find her.

Returning to her one safe place, a ranch outside Diamond ID, she discovers her high school romance and Special Forces soldier doing chores and recovering from serious battle injuries. The romance between Pepper and Dan is laced with suspicion and betrayal. Their on again/off again relationship is difficult to believe. There are lots of steamy bits, and dramatic action drives the story at the end. This installment advances the story of the Prescott siblings’ trauma and mystery, but it is nowhere as compelling as it could have been. It will still have a readership as part of the series and the author’s fans. Recommended with reservations.

Vamos a ver cuánto acierto).

Jackie Porter/Pepper Prescott is on the run. She witnessed a murder and ran to the only place she felt safe -- an Idaho ranch that belonged to her foster mother. Now she finds that her foster mother has died and left the ranch to her. Dan Graham has been taking care of her ranch while he recuperated from injuries sustained while in Special Forces. Dan and Pepper have a past together; Dan hopes to rekindle it, Pepper hopes to keep him at bay.

This is my first book by this author and frankly, I'm not impressed. I'm not opposed to sensuality but this book went overboard. It became boring, not sensual. Then there's the problem with the heroine. I cannot imagine how she took care of herself all those years with her dithery mental processes. Should she trust Dan or not? On and on and on.

Then the person Pepper saw kill her assistant (in the opening chapters) is the integral linchpin to the dangerous terrorists Dan is trying to entice into his trap on the Idaho ranch (that Pepper now owns). How outlandish is that? This story is beyond far fetched. Another problem was with the language used sometimes; it bounced from corny to overly-dramatic.

Now I've found out that this is the middle story of a series (see below). I don't plan to read any of them.

I missed this book in the series before, so it was great to get caught up with the children in this story.

Pepper was only 8 when she was separated from her siblings upon the death of her parents. After witnessing the murder of an aide to her heroine, by her heroine, she runs and goes to the only person she could ever trust. Trouble is, when she gets there, she finds her old boyfriend, Dan, instead of her foster mother. Her foster mother had died, and left the ranch to Pepper. The old boyfriend is there to take care of the property, among other things. They can't stay away from each other, and when they finally open up about what is actually going on, they find out their stories jibe. Not only that, but a family twist at the end makes for a great way to wrap things up.. but can they work things out??

I love anything Christina Dodd writes, new or old. I will read them all.

Lost and found

Another great story by Christina Dodd! Two lovers, separated for years, meet again. One is running from death, the other is seeking it. They find their youthful passion wasn't dead, only dormant. The fire is still there and seeing each other again has fanned the embers into flame. There's a problem though. They are both keeping secrets and their mistrust of each other's motives might just be their undoing.
Pepper is running from a powerful murderer and Dan, wounded in a special ops mission, has come home with his heart set on vengeance. Can these two find love and save each other? Read this great story and find out.

Another awesome book

I fell in love with book one and book two did not disappoint. Strong women, with intelligence and heart, make up my favorite kind of character, but add to that a strong man, with heart humor and a willingness to do anything for his women and I'm yours. Well worth the read people, it's a must!

Dan Graham - son of a ranch owner, good looking, attracted the girls, cocky... at 17 he took a liking to rebel, new to town Pepper. She ignored him, and ignored him, until he finally figured out how to spend time with her - at her home, with her foster mother, baking cookies, working in the garden, helping out at the ranch, where they got to be friends... and at a party, in reaction to meanness said about her, Pepper snagged Dan, and they kissed him - and they spent a lot of time kissing... but one night, they crossed into intercourse, and Pepper got scared and ran away...

Pepper Prescott - middle Prescott daughter, rebellious, tantrum throwing - at age 8, when her parent's were murdered, and the town separated the children, she ended up on the west coast in foster homes - she did not adjust well - but at 16 found herself with Mrs. Dreiss, in Idaho, who looked past the tattoos and the piercings and accepted and guided her, shared her love of her garden & of cooking. but when she had sex with Dan, and was overwhelmed with the fear of the future, she ran away - and for 9 years, she moved at a momen'ts notice, changing her name - but continued to send Mrs. Dreiss seeds and clippings of plants for her garden. And she's getting settled - in great part to the books written by General Jennifer Napier, who had a difficult childhood, a rebellious youth, and took control of her life. Pepper has a landscaping business, and she goes to a book signing with Napier - tells her own story to an apparently sympathetic Napier - and returns after the store closes with a book to sign for a friend - and thinking on Napier's advice to not let anything stand in your way, and seeing her car in the lot, heads to the back of the building... and overhears her assistant confront her about terrorist activity, and Napier shooting her assistant. She drops her books (drawing the general's attention), and runs - escaping - picking up her alternate ID & cash ... and 7 days later, she's in Idaho - going back to Mrs. Dreis...

Except Mrs. Dreis has passed away, she has inherited the ranch, and Dan has been staying at the ranch. Dan is recovering, both physically and mentally, from his last tour in special forces, where he took a shot in the gut & the family he was 'courting' for information is blown to bits - including their 4 year daughter... He had killed the terrorist's son, and was at the ranch to be the terrorist's target - to draw him out... He had looked for Pepper after Mrs. Driess' death, and both are very surprised to find each other there.

and Dan expresses himself with action - not even having the words in his own head - he kisses her right off, he feeds her Mrs. Dreiss' cookies, he gives her the hat that he had shyly gifted her with 9 years earlier, he overwhelms her with sex - taking control, and he watches her - at first suspicious that he is part of the terrorist plot, seeing through her lies (she does has trust issues), urging her to tell him the truth so that he can help and protect her... And Pepper is lost, wanting to trust her feelings, to trust him... he takes her to the cabin where they had made out many times (but is now fortified for the anticipated attack - along with all sorts of warning systems, and booby traps on the property)... and he gives her the letters that Mrs Dreiss wrote to her over the years... and Pepper feels anchored for the first time, and hears Mrs. Dreiss' voice encouraging her to tell Dan the truth - for his protection as well as to help her...

and in the meantime, Hope, Zack, Gabriel, and the butler are closing in... and though at first believed Napier's sincerity in helping them, quickly realize Pepper is in big trouble...

and when she goes to Dan - and tells him, he interprets her trust as her love - and expresses his love for her in passion (though it requires her submission to him , hmmmm)... and he ties General Napier as the last key in the terroist plot - and she is nearby...

and Pepper is scared - and tries to leave him - and he says hurtful, distrustful things to her - but he gets her to the cabin, and they unite as they hold the enemy (and there are a lot), and the backup finally gets there - and Napier is captured. and Hope and Gabriel are at the house - welcoming her, assuring her they were always looking for her - and Hope delivers the baby (yeah, Zach brought the midwife, just in case) - and Pepper turns away from Dan - and Dan makes her listen to him, to his regret, his apology, his challenge not to run like she usually does - and she defends Dan when Napier grabs a gun form her captor, shooting the gun from Napier's hand...

and she spends a week in Washington being debriefed (with Zach's lawyer right at her side)... she spends 3 weeks with Hope, Gabriel, and the new baby... and she tries hard not to think of Dan. But Hope sends her home - a friend from Idaho calls up and she is invited to Dan's parent's wedding - and Dan is sad, feels her presence but doesn't see her - goes back to the ranch - and she's not in any room he looks for her - he goes into his room to change - and the hat is on the bed -and he turns, and she is there reaching out for him. ahhhhh

3.5 stars, but I didn't like it as much as the first book in the series. The combination of flashbacks (though sometimes necessary) and repetitive character flaws made it less appealing for me. Still a decent read, and I'll read #3, but I liked #1 better.

Book 2 in the search for the Prescott sisters. Pepper was always the wild, middle child. Her fostering was fraught with hard knocks. She has made something of her self but it all goes wrong. She runs. Read to find out what happens

Love this trilogy. The stories are so engaging and intricate, the characters like friends you want to continue to hang out with. Ms Dodd can really draw one into these tales of love and loss and the strength of human spirit in pursuit of family and justice.

Pepper was really annoying. The guy was too good for her. She never admitted her faults and talked to the guy.
