The National Geographic Society created this book for Young Explorers, by Gene Stuart and illustrated by James Wilson Harris. When I saw it I became quite interested as a book to share with younger brother, nieces and nephews. It's great!!!

He writes about European Badgers in some lovely paragraphs with illustrations that are amazing.
Badger Town is where they live, and just out side there is their entry hole that they can jump into
quickly if chased from different forms of prey. They like to eat grasses as well as play in it.

He speaks of Prairie Dogs, and shows a good example of what a Prairie Dog Tow looks like out in the wild. They clean each other, munch grass. There are dogs designated for danger and they make and dig new holes, pack dirt down look for grass for beds. They have tons of tunnels running underground, which have nurseries, toilets, burrowing holes, escape tunnels, sleeping chambers, etc. I've always thought they were adorable to watch. They also have bark/chirp that
warns the others of danger. Coyotes are their worst enemy. They is at least one dog on watch for their safety.

When prairie dogs move out, real often other animals like rabbits move in. Burrowing owls are
also an example of animals that move in. They are good diggers, but often nest in burrows dug by other animals. Snakes are one of the very worst. They slither down their holes (all of them)
and attack the parents and their young.

The African Mushroom-growing Termites - Part of this kind of termite town is underground. Part of its town rises high above the ground. They could have several million insects at one time.
The King and Queen live in the Royal Chamber and never leave it, producing eggs all the time. Outside termite look like Sand Castles. There are outside miniature mongooses peek out of holes where they live on the side of the mound. Their gardens look like sponges.

Great book, highly recommend. A change for a change. Happy Reading!!
