Owl Be Bear For You

Rate this book
Hot summer fun where you’ll change…in more ways than one.

Librarian Mara Scioto lives a nice, neat, orderly existence—except when she’s being attacked by uncontrolled male shifters who need to mate.

Pesky little detail, right?

Raised by a grandmother who hates all shifters, she has one wish: to make it past the age of twenty-five without experiencing The Morph that tells you you’re one of them.

And then the letter from Camp Shifter arrives with her name on it...

Orthopedic surgeon in training Jack Karsten is waiting to see if he’ll follow in his shifter brother’s footsteps. Being a shifter won’t be so bad, if that’s his destiny, but when he meets Mara, he realizes that fate and love don’t always align.

But love always wins.

It can be a bear of an ordeal sorting it all out, but if anyone can help, it’s the staff at Camp Shifter. While they’ll train Jack and Mara on the ways of shifter life, there’s one thing they can’t teach them:

How to get out of their own way and let love leave them changed.

Forever.

A new type of shifter romance!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Romance: 💙🤎💜❤️
Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📘📙
World building: 🌏🌍🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 😠☺️😋🥰
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Mara - she is a librarian who wants her life to be as ordered as her library. She hates July and August, peak shapeshifter season. It was always the new ones that hit on her when in their first morph. Untrained shifters were a public safety hazard and her town did drills just for that purpose. The shifters changed for the first time before their twenty fifth birthday. Mara grew up with a grandmother who hated all shifters and Mara learned from her. She had also been clawed by a bear shifter a few years back.

The Hero: Jack - he is an orthopedic surgeon who has a brother that is a shifter. He wondered if he would be as well since he was approaching his 25th birthday. He was working in the ER and wasn’t new to managing untrained shifters and their victims. Once a new shifter was found, they were shipped off to camp shifter to learn how to manage their shifts.

The Story: While Jack was at work, Mara came in unconscious to be treated after a lion shifter morphed in the library. Mara wasn’t hurt, she just fainted. However, Jack felt very protective of her. Especially after hearing about her previous attack by her ex boyfriend, and the fact that she had to have surgery on her hip.

This series has shifters portrayed quite differently than in other shifter books I have read. Anyone could be a shifter, even if their parents weren’t and it always happened between the ages of 18 and 25. If you didn’t shift or get an invitation to camp shifter by your 25th birthday, then you are safe from the morph or the curse as some people think.

The story was pretty good in this book. Mara and Jack were attracted to each other from their first meeting and neither knew they were shifters at that point. Though when they both became shifters they ended up at camp shifter together and had to learn everything there was to know about their new selves.

This book was told in dual points of view by a dual narration. It and was narrated by Jeffery Kafer and Heather Costa. Jeffrey has a deep gravelly voice which I like though it reminded me a bit of a movie announcer or something. Heather has a feminine voice which is a bit hoarse but pleasant.

DNF at 10%.

"You really like her. She's not just a hole."

🤮

Ya. This author wrote the grossest male locker room talk. I don't need or want my characters to engage in objectifying women. I especially don't want my "hero" to be part of such a discussion.

This was way too instalust and gross for me.

A Fun, Fantastic, Thrilling & Unique Story! I devoured it in a few hours❤

I received an Ebook-copy in exchange for a honest review.

#My 1st from DJ. Just like Julia's Diana Seere PNR books, this one was Amazing😍

The blurb is perfect so I'll focus On,
Things I Loved❤:

1)The whole Concept is very unique! The world building is great, i love that Humans know about shifter here. Makes this different.

2)Their 1st meet! In ER, Him the Hot Doc, her (Sadly) the Victim.

3) He was really sweet😍 Such a Big Cutie! Their 1st date is Thrilling, though it ended on sombre note..

4) Their family❤ Her granny is a spitfire!

5) I now understand the name of the book, Wow.. she's a Owl shifter! Never read a story on one before!

6)Rules of the camp were quite amusing😉

7)Their meet In camp was surprising for them & them being fated made me so happy❤:-)
Both have experienced so much.. they deserved eachother😊

8)Shifter Having rabies. Never thought about that one before, it made this story full of action.

So excited for the next book!

It was hot and pretty crazy. Julia Kent, writing as DJ Jennings is a trip. And if you’re not in the know, DJ Jennings is a character in the Random series...and she’s using Danielle to represent herself, Travis to stand in for Trevor and Josh is really Joe. In on of her books, Darla starts writing shifter books. So...it’s a story within the story within the zany multiverse of Julia. She’s managed to make all of her series have interactions thus far...it’s like seeing characters from the TV show Cheers appear on Frazier or vice versa. Or the Jeffersons on All in the Family. It’s awesome like that. This was a hot shifter book. Normally, shifter books aren’t my thing. But...if Julia Kent had anything to do with it, I’m going to read it. Total fan girl right here.

Interesting start to the book
I was expecting cheesy shifter goodness
And it was cheesy and shiftery
But the language in it was sooo cringe !!!
There was a lot of things repeated and plot errors
Like they notice something and are shocked but they had noticed those things chapters earlier
The sex scenes were not even close to sexy like ew ew ew
I’m not a fan of Insta love anyway so this just missed on a lot of things for me
But I did like the idea of a shifter camp and some of the characters were interesting
And the title is hilarious

Ok so I went into this expecting it to be steamy and probably a little cheesy which is exactly how it started out. I liked the world building and people knowing that shifters exist, that was a really interesting take on it. I liked the concept of camp shifter too and the setting of it. From about half way through it became a little too cringe for me, the steamy scenes weren’t great because the authors choice of words just made me shudder. I don’t think I will be continuing the series

This was a good book. I liked the characters and the story. Great depth in the main personas, interesting details/circumstances, variety of personalities and written well. This has some suspense, emotions, a little action, a twist or two and a good ending. Great for passing time, a one-sitter read or just a quick escape.

Not super experienced with shifter stuff yet, but the idea of a character from one series going on to write her own romance books was interesting to me.

Overall, the plot line was good as were the characters. A few super hot sex scenes (nsfw due to much sex and due to a near rape).

Owl be bear for you

I am sorry. Hate giving bad reviews but I abandoned this book about a 3rd if the way in. It started out fine. In this world shifters do not “morph” into their shifter state till 25 years old. When they do they are uncontrollable. They have to be trained to control their change.

The female lead had a horrible experience when her boyfriend (unaware he was a shifter) when into his first morph and hurt her badly. Scarred by the experience she avoids dating.

Sounds interesting right. But then after encountering a new shifter again, she faints, goes to the hospital meets DR McDreamy, and on their first day are all over each other. She has lost all her fear the minute she meets him.

The implication is that they are both shifters and only days away from their 25th bday and therefore are feeling the pull of the morph.

Unfortunately it went from and interesting concept to sex. The sex part drags out. I found myself skipping pages. Not enough story build for me. I’m not a prude but would rather there be some romance and getting to know one another.

In this story shifters are a known thing because some humans shift by their 25th birthday. If you can make it past your 25th birthday then you are safe from shifting and becoming a shifter. Mara is a librarian and doesn't like shifters ever since she was attacked by a newly shifted bear shifter and badly hurt. Once a human shifts, if they aren't quickly picked up by the authorities and taken to shifter camp to learn to deal with their new existence, they can turn on any humans that are around them. The animal part takes over and they want to mate right away and if they can't, they get aggressive and can even attack and really hurt or even kill a human. Some humans know they are about to shift and they voluntarily go to camp shifter before they shift for the first time so they don't accidentally hurt someone.

Jack is an Orthopedic surgeon and asks Mara out. But while they're out on a date something bad almost happens and Jack is taken away to camp shifter. Mara gets a letter soon after and she is to report to camp shifter before her next birthday because she's going to shift but she doesn't understand how they could possibly know that. She thinks the grandmother who raised her is going to hate her because she hates shifters. But when she tells her grandmother about the letter, long lost family secrets rise to the surface.

At first I thought I was going to enjoy this book and then the whole story took a huge turn and everything was about sex. The story and storyline that had been interesting and the budding relationship between Mara and Jack turned into a lust-fest because if shifters don't have enough sex they can't control their animals. Newly turned males will attack any female that happens to be around them in order to get sex because the drive to mate is so strong they can't control themselves which is why Mara had been attacked. You would think if this is the case that every male who is about to turn 25 would have to he held behind bars just in case they turn to save other humans from being mauled but that isn't the case.

Camp shifter is all about teaching new shifters to have lots of sex. It seemed like the storyline just disappeared once there and the overwhelming urge to mate was all that mattered and that bothered me. I don't mind an insta-lust type romance storyline but there has to be more than the urge to mate that makes two people fall for each other in order for me to feel like the romance was worth reading.

This was not for me.

I usually like shifter romances, and I adore Julia Kent's (AKA D. J. Jennings) books, because they are usually hilarious and often very romantic. But I wasn't crazy about this one. It gets 3 stars from me.

The world created in this story is very different from most shifter books, and I didn't really like it much. I didn't like the idea that shifters had to be trained not to attack. It really bothered me that shifter males were unable to control their mating instincts when they first shifted, and especially that they would attack any available female.

I usually don't mind sex in romances, and it is almost always in shifter romances. But this story was too much about sex, and not enough about love. The whole point of a shifter's life seemed to be about sexual release. If they didn't have enough sex, they lost control of their inner animal. I didn't like that idea at all. I also found all the sex jokes a bit much -- they just weren't funny after a while.

I actually thought that Jack and Mara were more in lust than in love. It seemed to me that their entire relationship was built on sex. They barely knew each other, but were in love? I just didn't buy it.

I did like all the references to characters from the Random series. Those were cute, and it was fun to try and catch them all.

I won't be reading the other books in this series. I just don't like this version of a world that contains shifters.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Fun and exhilarating is how I would describe this beautiful shifter story. Owl Be Bear For You is a stunning vision of a tale so unique and amazing that you will be left in awe and quiet joy as you linger over this incredible masterpiece. I love the paranormal realm because anything is possible and no one can hold you back. I love the beauty that is found within these pages that made me smile so big and sigh so loud that I got looks from my family while reading. This is what dreams are made of, and I savored every bit!

Mara knows what to expect from life. She knows the ups and downs that are headed her way, and she is determined to face more ups if she has any say. She just wants to be happy and loved so that she can't stand still. Jack has his plans set in stone since he has family to take care of. One night knocks the wind from his sails and blows him completely off course. Can these two find their way back, or will being blown totally off course be the best things that ever happens to them?

Mara and Jack blew my heart to bits, and I was left reeling. Nothing is better in a story then to be taken by storm, thrown around by confusion, and then brought back to center by a love so powerful that your heart and mind will never be the same again. These two put me through just that scenario, and I love them to pieces for it. In fact, I would love to see them again. Our time was much too short.

D. J. Jennings is a phenomenal author who shook the foundation of my world and left me with pieces of my heart in my hand. They know how to use words to make you feel, to shatter your world, and to being everything back together even better then before. I was left in wonder at the heart and soul of this brilliant writer. Nothing will make me happier then to read and savor more of their extraordinary stories.

I have read quite a few books by Julia Kent and loved them all. This book was "written" by one of her characters from the Random series. Just like that series, there were some fun and some quirky characters here. Some are even characters you'll know if you are familiar with the Random series. However, it's not necessary to read those first to enjoy this one.

I've read many shifter books and liked the different take on the shifter world that this storyline presented. Here, shifters are known to humans and live and work right alongside them. Shifters do not know they're shifters until they hit an eight year window (starting at age 18) in which their true selves might emerge. Or they get a letter. Either way, they're sent off to a camp to learn the ins and outs of being a shifter. I've never seen any of those characteristics in any shifter books I'd read before. It was an interesting change.

As for the main characters, I liked both Mara and Jack. They both had traumatic experiences in their past that was caused by shifters. To find out they were one, especially for Mara, was tough. I loved how they learned and worked together and leaned on each other.

However, I was a little disappointed that we didn't get to see any of Mara and Jack once they re-entered the "real world" away from Camp Shifter. I wanted to see how co-workers and Mara's Nonnie would react to their return. There was also one really big unanswered question i was left with.

Hopefully we'll get to see more of these two making appearances in future books in the series. I am definitely interested in reading more.

Authors Writing Authors - Paranormal Delight!!

This is just the best….Author Julia Kent has her “Random” series, where one of her characters writes shifter romance. These stories actually came to life and now you get them all in one place!
I love when authors have authors in their books, because I figure they are somewhat autobiographical. I’ve never actually seen where the “fictional” author stories became reality, before now.
I love the premise in this shifter world. Shifters are revealed between the ages of 18 and 25, usually in the months of July and August. Males usually have to be tranq’d and taken to “Camp” where you learn to handle your new reality. Some receive letters and are requested to come to camp, but all shifters must spend a month at camp getting the basics down.

***** Owl be Bear for You *****
Librarian Mara Scioto was brought up with a distrust of shifters. Having been the victim of an Untrained Shifter Attack (USA) two years ago still gives her nightmares. A near miss at the library results in her fainting and in the ER. Jack Karsten is a member of the hospital’s Treat and Restrain Untrained Shifters Team, and sees to Mara. Though Mara has eschewed romance since her attack, she accepts Jack’s offer of a date. When he disappears, she thinks the date didn’t go well. But Jack was shifting, and did an amazing job not losing control. When Mara ultimately receives a letter to go to camp, she discovers Jack there, and they work through this new reality together. A terrific introduction to this shifter world.

I cannot believe it, this book was a new twist on the shifter universe. Not only do shifters exists, but society is widely aware of their existence, shifters cannot be made through a bite, there is a wide variety of shifters featured (everything from bear, wolf, owl, fox, to chicken), and anyone between a certain age can go through the Morph and become a shifter. As an extra bonus, there were Easter Eggs in this novel that referenced other works by Julia Kent, which was a treat for her readers.
This was fast paced read, it felt like one thing rolled right into the next and there was never a lull where a reader would feel like they needed to push through to get to the next thing. With that being said, the novel didn’t feel rushed either; there wasn’t the sense that the author had 12 ideas and only 5 chapters to cram them in. Needless to say I had a hard time putting this book down. I just had to know what was next, whether it was the next plot twist or punch line.
Like other novels by Julia Kent, this novel had a mixture of witty dialogue, unexpected plot twists, and plenty of steamy, melt the pages, chemistry. This novel isn’t made for those expecting a sweet romance, but those who like a little sass and a lot of spice in their stories.
Great read. Highly recommend.
I received this book from the publisher/author at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher.

This was a Fabulous bear shifter book and what a story line this book had. Jack is a surgeon and Mara is a librarian, they meet at the hospital he works at as she is attacked. You can sense they are attracted to each other via the authors hard work, the characters really made this book thoroughly enjoyable. This is the first book I've read by D. Williams and what a phenomenal read this book was from the very beginning.

I absolutely loved this book.
This is my first review ever!
And since Julia Kent is one of my favorites, and she gave me the book free for an honest review(my first again), I have to go with my heart.
So here it goes.
Love the new take on shifter science and training for assimilation in society.
As always Julia Kent takes the dark side of life and presents it with so much hope and lightness.
Mara and Jack have such different personalities in both shifter (owl and bear) and human form ( shy librarian and outgoing ER Doc.) and yet they are not an opposites attract story.
Jack shows his love with so much restraint, caring, control and tenderness for Mara you can't help but fall in love with him.
You just fall in love with the way they love each other.
The story starts slowly for me but soon after catches speed. No spoilers here.
Boy meets girl, girl gets shy, boy persists, they have a good time, life happens, they separate under miscommunication, surprise! they meet again and voila! fireworks! and life brings more tough times and love conquers all!
Will definitely read again.
Will surely read the other books in the series!
Thank You Julia Kent for the free book! I am hooked.

{Jack & Mara}: TRIGGERS: sexual assault, assault. I always love it when I find an author that can twist a formula for a paranormal romance on its head. This author has done this. So imagine, we're all human. Not too hard, right? But by our 25th birthday we would know for sure if we would be a shifter. 🤔 Crazy, right? Now imagine that somehow the government knows, based on DNA testing, who will be a shifter and they send those people to a camp after their birthday to "learn" how to be a shifter and which animal you will share your soul mind and body with? Well that's what this author has done in a sense. Mara is a librarian and she's been attacked before by a shifter that had just turned but hadn't gone to the camp to learn how to be safe with humans. She's now deathly afraid of shifters. She meets Dr Jack after being attacked yet again and the two are electric together. They have one hot night and after that… they both turn twenty five. 🤦🏾‍♀️. Story picks up at camp and let me tell you, the author has come up with some crazy classes and it's hilarious. Of course though, just because they are at camp to learn doesn't mean they are. Danger is always lurking. Freaking good and creative story.

Having read paranormal books by this author under a different pen name I was interested in reading this different take on shifter life. In this book shifters live alongside humans, but it is not always an easy balance. Until the age of 25 the possibility of a spontaneous shift or a letter in the mail to “Camp Shifter” keeps most young people wary. Mara works at the town library and it is here that she is almost attacked by an untrained shifter male, but is saved by the library’s security guard. She is brought to the ER to be checked and Jack, an orthopedic resident on call, attends to her. As soon as they touch intense feelings flood them both. They don’t understand their connection to each other, but agree on a first date. What happens on the date is super 🔥🔥🔥, but it’s what happens after that changes their fates forever. When they both learn the truth will they accept it for what it is? And can Jack protect Mara when it all hits the fan? I would definitely read the next book in this series to see the next couple to come out of Camp Shifter.

I really enjoyed this story with references to characters from some of my favorite Julia Kent stories (Random Acts), leaving me laughing out loud. You've got Mara, town librarian, living with her grandmother who has never shown anything but a hatred for shifters. Mara is within weeks of the age where she'll know for sure if she'll be a shifter. Then there's Jake, orthopedic surgeon in training, who is within days of knowing. He and Mara meet when she comes into the ER during his shift after a near miss with an untrained shifter. Her history has left her scarred - literally and emotionally - and she is very good at keeping people at a distance... until Jake. They have an immediate chemistry and connection and he just can't keep away. Sparks fly and danger lingers as they each face a new future - one where they are shifters. There were moments in this story that had me laughing out loud, and others that left me wanting to reach for a tissue. Add in some steamy scenes, and you've got a winner - definitely for the 18+ crowd. Looking forward to the next book in this series, and seeing what other Random references there will be.

A fun first read of a paranormal series.

I realize that each author is going to make up their own version of their shifter world. This one is a little different from usual, in that the shifters don't know if they're a shifter or not until they reach their 18 to 25th years. If they make it past 25 years old, they're all human. If they are a shifter, they have to go to a special training camp to be able to stay in society, which includes lots of sex. Interspecies sex mostly, and they don't heal quickly or live exceptionally long either. The camp is run by a triad couple that seems to have their own story that we may have missed. Not sure.

Dr. Jack and librarian Mara are a sweet, innocent, interspecies couple (he's the bear and she's the owl), with a good engaging and suspenseful story. This is a HFN story with no epilogue which was frustrating. I wanted to know where they went from here and what their future looked like. Hopefully we'll get more of them in future books. From what I gather DJ Jennings is a pen name of Julia Kent. I guess I'll keep reading since I have the next book.

Owl be Bear for You. bk 1, by DJ Jennings.
This is not my usual genre, but when you receive a book for your honest review by one of your favourite authors Julia Kent, how can you say no!

Camp Shifter is a camp where new shifters go to learn all about what is happening to them and to do so safely. Before they reach the age of 25, should they Morph or receive a letter.
Mara a librarian only has a few weeks left & Jack a doctor he only has 4 days to go. Can they both reach their 25th without a shift?? You'll need to purchase the book to find out.

This is exceptional, excellent, beautifully written and very well presented. You will be hooked from the very first page, I'm glad I read this and I will certainly be purchasing this book and the others that follow.
Did I find this book interesting-yes
Does this book have strong characters-yes
Did this book hold my interest throughout-yes
I highly recommend Own be Bear for You and will read again 5*+

Note: You can find Darla Josephine Jennings in Random Acts of Crazy series. Pop along it's another fantastic series by Julia Kent.

Thank you, Julia, for yet another great read:)

FINALLY we get to read one of Darla’s shifter books! If you’re a fan of Julia Kent’s Random series, you’re gonna love this book for that fact alone, and will be delighted by the call-backs to that series sprinkled throughout the novel. But even if you’ve never read the Random series, you will positively adore this book! The story is endearing, and the writing is witty and thoughtful. And the romance… oh my gosh, the romance! Absolutely sigh-worthy. This is truly paranormal romance at its finest. It’s sexy and funny and exciting and thought-provoking, and did I mention romantic? Well, it *bears* repeating, but *owl* give you a minute to think about it. I challenge you to read this book and not be completely enamored by it. If I haven’t yet made it clear, I absolutely LOVED this book and can’t wait to read more in this masterful and endearing Camp Shifter series.

This is the first book in the Camp Shifter series. This isn't your usual shifter book, this portrays a whole new side of shifters I haven't read before. Mara Scioto is a librarian who has a tragic history of being brutally attacked by an untrained shifter. Maria is at work and is attacked again but the security guards get to her in time to stop any damage from being done but she still needs to go to the hospital to be checked out. Jack Karsten is the intern that works with Mara in the emergency room. There is an instant spark, Jack goes to library to ask Mara out. They go out on a date and have a wonderful time but then Mara doesn't hear from Jack. When Mara finds out why Jack didn't get in touch with her after their date everything starts to fall in place. There is still danger and terror around the corner. I love this book. The character are great and you feel for them and what is happening to them. The story is amazing and original. If you like shifters this is a must read
