Art + Religion in the 21st Century

The relationship between art and religion has been long, complex, and often conflicted, and it has given rise to many of the greatest works in the history of art. Artists today continue to reflect seriously upon religious traditions, themes, and institutions, suggesting a new approach to spirituality that is more considered than confrontational.

Art + Religion in the 21st Century is the first in-depth study to survey an international roster of artists who use their work to explore religion’s cultural, social, political, and psychological impact on today’s world. An introduction outlines the debates and controversies that the art/religion connection has precipitated throughout history. Each of the book’s ten chapters introduces a theme—ideas of the Creation, the figure of Jesus, the sublime, wonder, diaspora and exile, religious and political conflict, ritual practice, mourning and monumentalizing, and spiritual “dwelling” in the body and in space—followed by a selection of works of art that illustrates that theme.

Artists discussed include Vanessa Beecroft, Maurizio Cattelan, Makoto Fujimura, David LaChapelle, Annette Messager, Jason Rhoades, Andres Serrano, and Zeng Fanzhi.

Excellent reproductions of a ton of art that touches on religions in various ways. All works definitely should be in international circulation more. So many perspectives! Many are somewhat disturbing-
definitely not for those looking for art that can be described as even remotely "cute". Will likely blow your mind with all the different ways the artists portray their takes on religions.

Stunningly beautiful curation of contemporary art with religious themes and overtones. Each chapter has a different theme, well researched introduction, then beautiful plates with explanations. This is like going to a museum through a book. The art world and religion have often been at odds in modern times, but this book shows that art can embrace religion in innovative styles that are though provoking and transcendent.

A great idea with many great examples of artwork. Unfortunately, some of them seem a stretch while at the same time there are many exemplary pieces that are not included.

Expansive, world-changing, human.

This book literally changed my world view on certain topics. I can’t recommend it enough. The art spans nearly every continent, religion, race, theme, viewpoint. Rosen delivers it in such a measured, elegant manner, prompting thought and feeling rather than anger and judgement.

Everyone should read this.
