Came across this due to a reference in my father's memoir account of meeting her in 1941 during the WWII convoys. A simply amazing story that if it was fiction would undoubtedly be considered a most unlikely storyline. Like any historical work it has to be appreciated best through the prism of the era in which it takes place. From the most unlikely background her desire to be an engineer, and a marine one at that, was as unique as her parents encouragement that allowed her to succeed. But, this is no tale of an easy transition from the comfort of a privileged upbringing to a chosen profession. Grit and determination are evident from the outset and continues through WWII action that resulted in high recognition, praise and unintended celebrity. Penned by her own niece it is an inspiration to all and particularly anyone seeking to challenge norms, break the mould and succeed in anything they might otherwise only dream of.
