Law of the Lycans #1.5

Kane: I Am Alpha

Rate this book
After surviving the leadership challenge, being Alpha should be easy, right? But Kane’s illusions are soon shattered as the demands on him escalate. His half-brother seems to have gone rogue, an old flame is becoming clingy, the pack’s water supply has been contaminated by an oil spill and now…the Council of Elders are proposing a political mating! What’s an Alpha to do?

A treat for die-hard fans, I Am Alpha presents Kane’s viewpoint on the original Law of the Lycan’s novel, The Mating.

Nicky Charles

Nicky Charles is an independent writer/publisher who became an author quite by accident. She always saw herself as a ‘reader not a writer’ and can thank—or blame, depending on the day—her friend/editor and fellow author, Jan Gordon, for the career she now finds herself immersed in. The tale goes something like this:

In January of 2009, Nicky penned a fanfiction for an old TV series, “Scarecrow and Mrs. King”, and soon became ‘hooked’ on story telling. She joined a fan-based group for the show and through there met Jan Gordon. It was an idle comment made by Jan during a review of Black Silk (Jan’s newly published book) that inspired Nicky to write her first original story. Over the course of the next two months, she hastily scribbled down a suspense driven romance entitled Forever In Time and presented it to the world in August of 2009. Soon after, she wrote The Mating, a paranormal romance and followed it up with The Keeping and The Finding. The three stories formed a loose paranormal trilogy called The Law of the Lycans. Nicky continues to expand the Lycan series and has a long list of possible plots waiting in the wings.

Nicky works full-time and writes in her off-hours, few though they may be! In the next few years she hopes to retire from her day job and concentrate more of her energy on her new passion of writing.

When she writes, Nicky sees the story unfolding in her head like a movie and tries to include enough detail so that readers can ‘see’ the story just as she does. The sights, sounds, smells and sensations of a scene are almost as important to her as the actual plot.

Creating main characters that are ‘real’ is also something she strives for. Nicky tries to make each character different, to give them an interesting back story, to make their actions and feelings logical and to hopefully make the reader actually care what happens to the people in the story.

Nicky lives in Canada and tries to stick to Canadian spelling and punctuation in her work, in support of her country. She is an avid supporter of animal shelters, nature conservancy, food banks and a variety of other charities. Currently she has two ‘inside’ cats and one official ‘outside’ cat though a number of strays seem to take up residence in her garden each year.

When not writing, Nicky enjoys reading – though she often bemoans that she seldom has time for it any more. Her favourite authors are Elizabeth Peters, S.C. Stephen and Cherise Sinclair. She also enjoys spending time out in nature, gardening, taking day trips and eating dark chocolate.

It’s been a while since I first read The Mating. I remember the excitement of reading it for the first time and have since read it over and over. It’s one of those books you wish you could read for the first time again. And, in its only little way, Kane: I Am Alpha brought back that magical first time feeling again. As a long-time fan of Ms. Charles, I must say this was the perfect holiday gift to her fans.

Law of the Lycan fans, you are going to love this book!

Kane’s story takes place right before he and Elise are first mated right up to the time he first brings her home. We get to see how Kane becomes Alpha, all the beginning trials he experiences and his first thoughts on becoming mated. So many questions answered! It certainly puts a lot of things in perspective and gives me a new opinion about Kane. Not that I didn’t like him before which of course I did. He just feels even more human to me knowing the struggles he faced.

So there I was, reading along, completely absorbed in the story. Reminiscing and remembering Kane and Elise, all that had transpired then it happened: the book ENDED! NOOO! Too short, too short! I know the solution is to read the series over again which I will be doing very soon but for right now I'm going to cross my fingers Ryne gets a book of his own.

I liked how Kane's attraction to Elise has more of a history than was shown in book one. I really enjoyed that part, but then the story falls into the same pitfalls as book 1.

This story only takes you up to the point where Kane brings her to his home and just past the place where Elise first meets Marla. So no helpful insight there and no grovel for what he did towards the end of the book 1.

I loved this Novella! Kane being one of my favourite characters, and being able to read his point of view, made it even more so. Nicky, as always, has me wanting more and can not wait until her next story.

This was a great addition to the Law of the Lycans series.
This book is a prequel that should have been numbered 0.5 but the author said she didn't have a 0.5 option on the publishing dashboard. I've read all of the books in this series and loved every single one. You will not find a bunch of grammar mistakes or cliffhanger endings in this series. Nicky Charles writes so well that it's hard to believe that in the beginning she was giving her books away just for a donation to animal shelters and food pantrys.

This follows the story in the first book of the series but from Kane's point of view. The book was okay but it went over the same exact things that we had from Elise's point of view so I was a bit disappointed because I was excepting something better.

Well I knew this was short going into it, but I guess I expected more Elise and Kane. I wanted to experience Kane after he was Kane and Elise. Elise really didn’t enter the picture until after 50% of the book.

Although I did LOVE that he saw her and wanted her months before they were ever mated. That was such a sweet little surprise. But it just made me crave more. I was kind of disappointed when it ended. I wouldn’t have even minded if the book skimmed a lot of the main events from the first book and then took place in the future after Marla was out of the picture and we could have experienced them finally together with no outside interference. I wanted that so bad and it’s what I felt was missing from the first book. I needed more of them happy.

But this was a nice little snippet into Kane’s mind. I liked that it was cleared up about him and Marla. It was implied in the first book that he had been with her, but it was never talked about outright. So I liked that in Kane’s head he was just a private person and yeah he went out with Marla a few times and people suspected they were more serious than they were, but he never felt the need to set anyone straight, because he didn’t seem to care for gossip.

It’s good to be alpha but...

It’s lonely at the top...Nice to see the alpha’s POV since we got Elise’s in The Mating. I often felt sorry for Kane in The Mating and did so also in this story. Being an alpha is a stressful, solitary duty. Kane is already overwhelmed with Zack’s death, Ryne’s betrayal and now a new mate!

A woman of few words—crickets...

Elise makes Kane work for every bit of conversation he gets from her. It is so awkward and I am really pulling for Kane to make this mating work. Their first night is beyond awkward and embarrassing for her but Kane forges on—the alpha in him won’t allow him to give up. Kane has no idea what Elise is feeling except on occasion when she lets her guard slip.

Meet the parents...er, pack...

Elise appears to be welcome by all of his pack with the exception of Marla. Marla thinks to run off this young interloper unfit to be the alpha female in her eyes. She should be alpha, so she thinks and sets her agenda.

But what I would have really liked to read in Kane’s POV is about that argument concerning Bryan when Kane caught Elise and Bryan together at the diner and the events that followed when Elise and Kane returned home!

Still one of my absolute favorites, this novella fills in the very few holes in this story. On my Were Scale of Hotness, 5 stars.

My true rating is 4.4 stars.

Years ago, I discovered the original story "The Mating" and was immediately captivated by the world it unfolded. The characters endeared themselves to me as they navigated their lives, striving to remain authentic while shielding themselves from external threats. Initially, we experienced the narrative through the female perspective as she grappled with unforeseen challenges. Now, we see through Kane's eyes, revealing his perceptions and emotions.

Surviving a leadership challenge should make leading as Alpha straightforward, shouldn't it? However, Kane's preconceptions are quickly dismantled as pressures mount. His half-brother appears to have turned renegade, a past lover grows overly attached, their water source is tainted by an oil spill, and to complicate matters further, the Council of Elders suggests a political mating. Faced with these predicaments, what is an Alpha to do?

I enjoyed this novella very much. I wish this had actually preceded The Mating.

I have read all the books in the Law of the Lycan series and of all the "Alpha's", Kane was my least favourite. I thought he was egotistical and self-centered. Now, having read Kane: I am Alpha, I may have to change my opinion of him.

It is well written and answers a lot of questions the readers may have had, letting us see another side of Kane. So, yes Kane, you're out of the doghouse and I guess I should apologize for thinking all those nasty things about you.

If you love the Law of the Lycan's series, I highly recommend this book. You will NOT regret buying it.

Kane: I Am Alpha by Nicky Charles
Law of the Lycans Series Book Nine
Kane Sinclair's point of view about becoming alpha, mating with Elise, the trouble between him and Ryne. This is a novella. I really enjoyed it as I like the different point of views from characters. The reader sees things from the opposite view. Such as, what really happened between Kane and Marla vs what Elise thought she saw.

Their story starts in The Mating. If you haven't read any of Nicky Charles Law of the Lycan Series, you may want to start with The Mating, The Keeping, and The Finding.

I didn’t know this existed today, but when I found out I immediately bought and read it in a few hours. Kane and Elise have always been my favourite characters from this series, so content based on them and around the original story from The Mating is something I’ve been wanting more of. I loved every second of it - it reminded me of how enjoyable it was first reading The Mating. It’s only a novella, so it’s short and doesn’t cover the entirety of The Mating from Kane’s POV (which really would’ve been amazing!) but hardcore Kane and Elise fans will be pleased with it. It only costs a few dollars, and I believe it’s money well-spent in this case.

Lovely story

I am a huge fan of all things Nicky Charles. This is a short tale of Kane and Elise first meeting, as told by Kane. I felt bad for Elise when I first read The Mating. Her father was so forceful with no feelings and it seemed Kane was also very uncaring. Of course as the book went on we see the truth, but it was very nice to read what his true feelings were from the very beginning! Lovely quick read!

Terrific addition to the series

Getting Kane's POV was a welcome bonus. I've read most of the books in this a while back and decided last night to begin re-reading and pick up the few I missed. I have to confess, I skipped forward to read book 9 immediately after completing book 1, and I must say, I enjoyed this more in depth look into Kane's heart and mind.

I LOVED this book!

But I have to admit that I was a bit disappointed, because I thought it would be a retelling of the whole the Mating story and I wasn’t paying attention so I was caught off guard when it ended so soon ..
especially since it’s been ages since I’ve re-read the Mating, so I was excited to revisit the whole story 😔

I need more Kane in my life 😍

I really liked this book. Nicky hasn't let me down yet with this series. I enjoyed the story through Kane's perspective. Maybe we can see more of these with Ryne, Bryan, Rafe, and Reno. I'd like to know what was going on in their brains when they met their leading ladies.

I really liked Kane's POV but I really wish I could have read this first. In the first couple chapters, I kept getting mad because I knew what Marla was up to and it just p*ssed me off, lol! Love Kane and Elise!

A nice surprise!

Kane's story was a nice surprise! I'm pleased to catch up with the old characters. I wished the book was longer to see the present day of the characters lives. But I always like to revisit characters that I'm fond of.

Good Call

Defiantly happy. Good call on bringing out Kane's POV. It was great being able to have fun rehashing and bringing out the good memories. Kane is favorite of the Lycons and this was a joy.

So good to see it from Kane's POV. Have loved this series, characters and world since The Mating first came out, and how new it felt for a mating to be about politics and not insta-love/lust between the couple.

I was very excited when I saw this, I must say I was a little disappointed. Yes, we get to know a lot more Kane but it was just a bit of a tease. Of you liked "The mating" tho, you want to read this tidbit that gives you a whole lot insight into Kane. Wink, wink. You will like that tidbit.
