Y no puedo eludirla.
No estamos destinados a estar juntos.

This is my first from this author.... the story itself was heartbreaking, as in I was told this was more of a personal story to the author and a lot of the situations in the book, was from personal experience. I hate that bullying is such a problem and cannot believe that it was such a problem between adults.
This Olivia, acted like she was in elementary school. Then she acted like a jealous girlfriend instead of a sister....gross...

So, Violet had been bullied all her life and her parents were just....not supportive, mainly her mom. I don't understand how a mother could be so dismissive and patronizing. She really got on my nerves and I thougth Violet deserved someone to fight for her. I'd have loved the dad to tell her mom off for being such a twat. But, it didn't happen. Going away to college and her mother letting her know she was on her own now that she had a younger kid to take her place.... she thought she was going to start over and be able to be herself without everyone being so nasty to her.
School was hard for Violet, everyone was awful to her. A little more than believable at times, I mean, I know kids are jerks but everyone that she came in contact with?

College is just as bad, because her roommate...Olivia (sidenote: I've never met a nice Olivia...they're always bullies...what's up with that?) Anyway...Olivia is the roomate and she's rude and entitled and bratty and I wanted so badly for Violet to punch her and then spit in her face. She didn't.....she didn't even stand up for herself. Even broke up for the first guy to show her a little attention because she happened to be the guys sister. Gag.... and when Jesse didn't beleive Violet, even when she was sickeningly nice about everything and everyone, even her bullies.... I didn't like him after that and I didn't believe their relationship at all. I thought the whole time he was going to pull something.

THEN, after a whole book of bullying and being so incredibly mean and nasty, at the very last second for no apparent reason, the bully has a change of heart and guy is in love with her. The parents never get put in their place.

3 stars from me.

Speechless...

I can relate to this book in so many ways. I to was made fun of in school. I was called all kinds of names and treated very badly. I am a strong and confident woman today and I’m glad for that. But like you said not everyone handles things the same. I loved this book and would definitely recommend it. Thank you for being brave and strong even all these years later and writing this book.

I was given an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

I feel this book is a solid 3.5 star read. It delivered a powerful message in regards to self esteem, bullying, and the psychological ways experiences from childhood can continue to affect us into adulthood. Overall, I felt the story would've made more sense if set in High School. I found it very hard to believe people behave like this in college! There were also a couple of issues I had with consistency and story continuity, but ignoring these issues I still felt it was a good story. Violet, the main character, has always felt ugly because of how kids treated her in school and how she feels the lack of support and love from those around her, including her parents. When she arrives at college, ready to put behind her horrible high school years, she realizes that perhaps college is just an extension of crappy high school when her new roommate turns out to be the devil incarnate. She meets Jesse, the hot senior, who she quickly befriends. As they continue to cross paths, Violet can't believe that Jesse would find her attractive. I could relate to a lot of how Violet felt and her lack of self esteem. As the story progressed I felt like the author could've filled out the story better to further develop the characters and give them more "life". I also was confused about the whole Facebook aspect. In the beginning, it is noted that Violet doesn't do social media or even have accounts. Yet later, when it seemed convenient to the story, she all of a sudden had an account? The ending seemed rushed and I did not believe all could be so quick to forgive the devil incarnate. But I understand it was supposed to be a light story. Still, the message the author wanted to send out was definitely received and I'm glad that she had the strength to write about such a painful experience, which she notes in the afterword. This is a great book that hopefully a young adult audience will appreciate and listen to.

3.5🌟

It's hard to truly describe how I feel about this book. I loved it and yet was so frustrated by it. Violet was almost a touch too much. She's clearly a good person with lots of talent but f*cked up so much mentally that she can't even handle anything remotely negative... And I'm not referring to the bullying. Even a simple critique of her writing and she'd want to write off writing all together.

Jesse is clearly a good hearted person who sees the real Violet, sees her beauty where no one else tries. One of his negatives being that he knows how much of a b*tch his sister is but can't seem to believe Violet when she tells him all about her dirty deeds. Like how dense are you?

Which brings me to Olivia. I wanted to punch her more times that not! Lol I'm glad things changed in the end and that Violet got her happy ending. I wish the author gave a little peek into that exchange between Olivia and her brother where she confessed everything she did. I would have loved to have read Jesse reaming Olivia out and putting her in her place. She deserved that much and didn't deserve Violet always accepting her bullying.

Overall, I loved Violet and Jesse's story slowly falling in love. Violet and Janna's friendship, Janna is totally 'no fucks given' and I love that. She had her dark moment but she came through. The storyline itself is very real dealing with today's hard issues that youths face. Bullying is huge esp today with social media and I want to acknowledge Tracy for throwing in the suicide prevention line. Bravo.

Fans of Never Been Kissed will like this book.

I received Ugly Beautiful Girl from Indie Book Box. It is a cute (but real) coming-of-age story for Young Adult and New Adult audiences.

I thought the first-person narration worked really well for this story and was very well-done. The poems beginning each chapter were relevant to the character's struggle and the book's theme. "Social Media" at the start of Chapter 5 was especially striking.

I thought antagonist Olivia's antics seemed a bit childish for a college-age bully and found the existence of a college Slam Book a little far-fetched. Also, protagonist Violet's inconsistency got a little annoying at times. She tells herself that she must be confident and claims to want to change her situation... only to revert back to self-defeating convictions like "I am what I am and always will be."

I was glad that Jesse was a genuinely good guy and happy that Violet found her "people" in Janna and the writing club. I would have liked to see her confront her parents about the course of study she really wanted to pursue.

Though Violet feels isolated in her struggle, it is one that many can relate to. I'm glad that the author kept this story on the light side. I imagine it took several readers (myself included) back to a place in life that we'd rather not revisit.

Bullying is a real issue in the world today. As I was writing my review I was watching the news show the First Lady of the United States speaking at the UN yesterday about bullying. Then they talked about how she was bullied online about her speech and the outfit she wore.

Violet, the main character in this book only saw herself as unattractive as a result of being bullied and having non supportive parents. The emotional scars ran deep and affected her self esteem. It was so easy for her to revert into her shell and not stand up for herself. She saw herself as the bullies had portrayed her. As time went on we saw Violet grow and become more confident but the long term effects of the bullying were always under the surface.

Jesse was her roommates brother and he was definitely the hero of the book He only saw her as beautiful and smart and he continually relayed that to her. With the support and unconditional love of Jesse we gradually saw a butterfly emerge from the cocoon. I received an advance reader copy and voluntarily chose to review this book,. Everyone should read this book and become more aware of this problem in our society and the permanent harm it does to so many. It's thought provoking.

Sad but not depressing which centers around high school and college bullying. Characters flawed and damaged at the hands of others. Violet, Jesse, Olivia and Janna each must come to terms with their backgrounds and their own personal demons. Vi, a bullied girl told all of her life that she is ugly, weird and a nerd cannot accept that an attractive popular guy, Jesse likes her. To others, Vi is told she is Miss Perfect and prissy, but she sees herself as shy, overweight and lacking in self esteem and self worth. Good book told from Vi's perspective and shows Vi's creative side with a poem at the beginning of each chapter to set the stage. Olivia, who is truly evil and Jesse's sister does some horrible stuff to break them up. Throughout the book, I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and it does. At the end, the author's note to reader informs the reader that this story is closely written from her life experience, which is daunting. That she was able to get through it and perserve is a good testimony.

3.5 estrellas.

Me parece horrendo...

I feel humbled by the message in this story

I have never been a fan of poetry but the PREY poem spoke to me and I have read that little poem that started this book about ten times over. I could read the pain and the longing for things to be different. Violet has suffered so much as a young girl and has such hope for her future. She finds that hope looks alive with Jesse but Olivia, his sister, seems too often to snatch her hope away. You hear stories about bullying - and the old adage about the sticks and stones and names not harming you. Tracy Krimmer's story shows us very clearly that names do harm and they cut deep. Wonderfully well written and a damn good story - really made me think hard.

A sweet college romance. Violet has always felt like an outcast and hopes college is a new beginning. When Violets college roommate turns out to be just another mean girl, Violet continues to deal with the name calling and bullying. Once she finds her footing and the love she always hoped for, she is once again humiliated by the mean girl. The story had a great message, but there were times when I was confused and frustrated by Violets action and reaction to how people treated her. Ugly Beautiful Girl is a story of forgiveness, finding who you are and being true to yourself and the people that deserve your love.

I have read other books by this author and have always enjoyed her writing style and quirky, memorable characters. Ugly Beautiful Girl did not disappoint. Violet's story is ripped from the headlines yet a very unique one. The impact of bullying on a young person's psyche is dealt with thoughtfully and realistically. There is no magic answer to the life issues facing Violet but it was hopeful and positive and I loved every minute. I'm usually not a big fan of poetry, but Violet's writing at the start of each chapter provided insights that added greatly to the development of this character. I am adding Violet's name to the top of the list of memorable characters created by Ms. Krimmer.

WOW! This book spoke and resonated with me! Bullying is a huge issue in today's society and this book opens your eyes to just what bullying can do to one's self-confidence. The constant self-depreciation one does when battered with negative comments can be daunting. Even one's family may not comprehend the depth in the lowering of self-value. Violet was a likable character that I found myself crossing my fingers for and to see her grow to be stronger while understanding her self-worth. A thought-provoking weekend read that you won't want to put down!

A wonderful coming of age story. This story tells how words can hurt and affect our self perception. I love that it also shows how beauty is perceived. Just because someone is not so beautiful by society's standards on the outside, it is the beauty that is within that will prevail. And Just because someone is beautiful on the outside, doesn't mean they are beautiful on the inside. Join in the journey with Violet as she discovers that she is indeed beautiful 😊

Great young adult read

Great coming of age college story. Loved Violet and Jesse any guy who can watch Twilight is an amazing guy in my book let alone provide trivia😊. What stopped my from ranking this book five stars was the lack of closure regarding her parents I wish violet would have confronted them on how they treated her like she was second rate in her household. Other than that good fast read.

I really really liked the concept of this book, and I'm aware that this was somewhat based on the author's own experiences and for that I really thank her for having the courage to share her story.
In saying that, while I liked this story, I can't say I felt as many emotions or connected with Violet as much as I would have liked to. I felt like the poems spoke a lot, but I would've liked to delve even deeper into the pain and hurt that was manifested in her.

2.5-3 stars. There were a lot of things to like about this book, such as Violet's poetry at the beginning of each chapter, or the cute sub-plot about Violet and Will trying to set up two of the elderly residents at the senior home where they work. But the overall plot felt like it relied too much on romance cliches, and the bullying felt more like it was being done by middle schoolers rather than college students. My full review will be coming to YouTube soon!
