Natural Thorn Killer by Kate Dyer-Seeley is the first book in the new cozy Rose City Mystery series. The series is set in Portland, Oregon where Britta Johnston has returned home to the aunt that raised her and taken a job in her floral boutique, Blooma, along the banks of the Willamette which gave the setting a lovely small town feel to it.

Britta had just found out that her husband had been cheating which gave her the push to leave the marriage that she knew she hadn’t been happy in for quite a while. Working at a dead end job and supporting her husband had really brought her down so Britta takes the opening to return to her aunt and a job that allows her to showcase her artistic talents.

However, shortly after Britta returns and begins to get herself established in her new life she finds a rather huge shock when walking into the shop to find the same sleazy real estate developer that had been trying to buy up the area dead. With a rather charming detective on the case Britta finds herself jumping in and trying to find the killer herself.

The setting in this first installment of the series was a rather lovely one with the quaint village that the flower shop is set in giving a everyone knows everyone small town vibe. The author also seems to know her way around floral arrangements as far as I can tell not knowing too much in that area myself.

The one thing I found however that really bothered me a bit was adding in a budding romance for Britta when the book starts off with her leaving her marriage. Had the author perhaps joined the Britta say six months or so after her move and simply filled readers in on what had brought her to the west coast it might have set better with me but I kept thinking it was just too soon to worry about dating or love. In the end I’d give this first installment to the series 3.5 stars and hope that as it goes on I’ll feel Britta finding love along with solving murders a bit more believable.

I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

Britta Johnston was pleased to be home – back in the town she grew up in, with the aunt who raised her. Aunt Elin owned the floral boutique – Blooma – in the Riverside district of Portland where all the shop keepers were friends and supported one another in a variety of ways. Britta’s gift was creating bouquets, while roses were her speciality. Aunt Elin welcomed her niece with open arms.

When the body of a real estate developer was found – by Britta – murdered in their boutique, the local detective was on the scene in minutes. But with the murder weapon belonging to Elin, the eyes of the police were on her. Britta knew her aunt wouldn’t have done this horrendous thing – so her job was to discover the killer quickly. But did the murder have anything to do with the dead roses which had been left lying around? Would Britta discover the culprit before someone else was murdered?

Natural Thorn Killer by Kate E. Dyer-Seeley is a snappy, lighthearted cosy mystery which I enjoyed. It’s also the first in the Rose City Mystery series, and I’m looking forward to reading book 2 soon. Set among the boutique flowers, I could almost smell the wonderful scents of fresh flowers. Recommended.

Dollycas’s Thoughts

Blooma, a flower/wine shop in Portland Oregon is where Britta Johnston finds herself after leaving her lazy husband and job behind. Her Aunt Elin’s shop is expanding and she is thrilled Britta is bringing her artistic talents home. Soon after Britta arrives she learns that a real estate developer wants to buy out all the local business owners so he can tear everything down and rebuild a marketplace with housing on the waterfront. Most of the owners are refusing to sell, but the developer gives one last push and that push may have caused his demise. Britta arrives at Blooma and discovers the developer dead surrounded by dead roses and her Aunt Elin’s garden shears pushed right into his chest. When the police decide Elin is their main suspect Britta decides to sow a few seeds of her own to find the real natural thorn killer.

Blooma is a delightful setting for this cozy mystery. Elin’s interest in wearable items made of flowers is unique and fresh as is her whole outlook on her business. Flowers grown locally is what she uses for all her creations. She tunes and really listens to her customer’s wishes to make something original and that is what set her above other florists. Plus she has a wine bar and she is opening up a cottage next to the shop for events and classes. The whole Riverplace Village sounds pretty fantastic.

We meet Britta Johnston in the middle of a cold Minnesota winter when she is fed up with her husband and realizes she will never be happy at her job. She just packs up, gets on the train and heads home to Portland. I myself would probably take the Minnesota weather over the Oregon cold rainy weather but I sure can’t blame her for changing her life and following her dream especially when her aunt’s business is the perfect place for Britta to bloom.

The mystery was well planned and plotted. I formed an instant dislike for the victim, as had almost everyone around him. That means plenty of suspects. It also means Detective Pete Fletcher and Officer Thomas “Tomo” Iwamoto spent a lot of time around the flower shop. I really enjoyed Tomo, he was so friendly and good-natured. Detective Fletcher was great too. The mystery was not easy to solve and kept me guessing right up until the end.

All of the characters we met within this story were pretty fleshed out for the first book in a series. They were very engaging and relatable. They are characters I want to get to know more about and the relationships they build together.

This series is off to an excellent start! I am excited to see what is next for Britta and Elin.

A new series featuring a floral design and the Rose City, Portland, Oregon.
Britta Johnston has returned home after the disaster of her marriage ended. Her Aunt Eilin owns a Floral shop Blooma which situated in a portion of the banks of the Willamette River. It is a closed unit where all owners help each other. Eilin is preparing to launch a major addition to her business. It is to be about floral jewelry including a dress made completely of flowers. One morning when Britta opens the shop, she finds a dead body in the cottage. This begins a journey where she makes new friends, aids the police and learns about her past.
Floral tips and recipes are included. I highly recommend this book. I am ready to read the next book.

Disclosure: Many thanks to Kensington Books for a review copy. The opinions expressed are my own.

I am a fan already! This mystery pulled me in immediately and didn't let go of me until the end. One of my most favourite series are Kate Dyer-Seeley's Pacific Northwest Mysteries and I felt just right at home with the setting being again in Oregon a state which I have yet to visit.

After she finds out that her husband is cheating on her, Britta leaves him and goes back home to Portland to live and work with her aunt Elin in her flower shop. Flower shop themes are not new to the cozy mystery genre but here's a new spin with the addition of a wearable flower design studio situated a little cottage behind the shop that also offers classes.

The morning after the community shop owners meeting with Frank a real estate developer who wants to buy all the shops and build a new development on the popular Willamette riverside he is found dead in Elin's design studio....stabbed with her shears.

The local police force is made up of 2 friendly officers, Tomo a young officer with Japanese background whose parents own a restaurant close by and Pete, more experienced and new to the area, develops an interest in Britta.

A very interesting murder investigation, some wonderfully drawn characters, a tight community of shop owners and some promising relationships are ingredients to this well paced mystery.

A new favourite mystery series for me!

I requested this book from NetGalley and am thankful that Kensington and the author provided me with an advance copy.

3.5/4 stars

I was sufficiently engaged to read the next book in the series.

I think the author tried to stuff too many "trends" into this book....flowers, wine, coffee, Portland setting. One would have been enough.

As a botanist/florist/horticulturist, I appreciated all the flower details, although I did catch a couple of errors.

My one big complaint--which is a complaint for a lot of cozy mysteries--is how odd it is that someone finds a violently murdered dead body, and is back to making flower arrangements and sipping coffee a few paragraphs later. A lot of cozies do this, and it's always jarring to me. I get the whole "glossing over the reality of a violent crime" thing necessary for a cozy mystery, but it still detracts from a book when a character acts like that is essentially "no big deal"...hmmm. Whatever.

On the good side...I loved the multicultural cast of characters...Swedish aunt, adorable hipster Asian detective whose family owns a noodle house (LOVE HIM!), African-American candle store guy, and a host of other quirky folks. I also like the police detective potential love interest. Nice!

I think I'll dive into book number two, and see how that one works.

Grade: B

Sometimes you just connect with an author’s writing style immediately. Sometimes you connect with the main character of a cozy from the very first book. Other times you connect with the relationships depicted, the setting described, the chosen careers of the character or the way the suspense is built. And sometimes, it all just clicks and the book is deeply enjoyable. Happily, Natural Thorn Killer was one of those books that just clicked with me on so many levels. The characters are well-rounded, the descriptive writing is wonderful and the plot is expertly crafted. If you are a fan of the cozy mystery genre, I recommend this author. I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher through NetGalley. This did not affect my rating. I have provided an unbiased and honest review.

Natural Thorn Killer by Kate Dyer-Seeley was an excellent begining to this new cozy series.

I admired Britta when she moved back to Portland. She's so much stronger than she thinks she is and her character is evolving in this first book. I can relate to some of her feelings as she makes the decision to move home to "find herself". Ms. Dyer-Seeley's descriptive writing of Portland and the flower arrangements made me feel like I was there in the shop and cottage. The story line flowed, the pacing of the plot was quick and the twists kept me guessing until the reveal. I also enjoyed the subtle possibility of a romance for both Britta and her aunt Elin. The secondary characters were also well drawn and I am looking forward to getting to know them better in future books. I want to walk through the shops and be friends with all of them.

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book from Kensington via NetGalley. All of the above opinions are my own. I would like to sincerely thank Kensington for allowing me to read this ARC.

I had the pleasure of reading Natural Thorn Killer a new book by Kate Dyer-Seeley yesterday. This upcoming Kensington release slated for March 27th, centers around Britta who leaves a loveless marriage and returns home to her aunt's flower shop just in time for her aunt's flower cottage opening. Just days before the big event, Britta discovers the body of a local developer at odds with Britta's aunt has been murdered inside the cottage. Britta is desperate to help her aunt open on time and will do anything she can to help assist the local police... I feel like author Kate Dyer-Seeley does a great job of capturing the vibe and true feel of Portland Oregon. It is one of my most favorite places to visit and only about 8 hours drive from where I live. Portland has a rich and exciting small town in a big city feel and you really do get that feeling when you read Natural Thorn Killer. I liked the mystery, loved the setting, characters and I look forward to reading the next book in this series.

This is the first book in the new Rose City Mystery series. Britta Johnston has returned to Portland, Oregon after she discovers that her lazy husband has been cheating on her. Her Swedish Aunt Elin owns Blomma, a specialty floral design shop complete with a wine bar. The local shopkeepers are very close. During a Merchant Association meeting, the developer Frank Jaffe has offered a million dollars as a one-time buy out offer but they all must agree. The next morning, he is found murdered in the cottage on Elin's property, with dead roses scattered around him.
Elin had scheduled a party celebrating the opening of the cottage for classes in floral jewelry so she and Britta are anxious to solve the murder. They have no idea why the killer chose the cottage as the murder scene and are afraid they might be the killer's next victims.

I really enjoyed this book for several reasons. The pace was just right; the book never dragged on nor did it overwhelm me with too many characters and suspects. The dialogue and relationship between Britta and Elin flowed naturally even though they hadn't seen each other in some time. Their affection and mutual respect felt so genuine. The descriptions of the city and the Willamette River were so detailed. I have never been to Portland but this book transported me there; it was as if I were walking right along with all the characters. And then the flowers--wow! I have never read such a descriptive book about flowers in a cozy, and I have read several others. Perhaps some of the pages on all the types of flowers could have been devoted to more plot and for that, I gave the 4 stars. At the conclusion, the author provides detailed instructions on how to preserve your next bouquet's longevity, how to pair flowers with wine (I had never heard of that before), a recipe for Elin's Swedish pancakes, and an excerpt from the next book in the series: Violet Tendencies.

I am a fan of this author and her writing style so I was happy to see a new series debuting. Natural Thorn Killer is the first in the Rose City Mystery series and is set on the Pacific Northwest - Portland specifically. It is a quick fun read that has a cast of wonderful characters that will draw the reader into the story. Britta is returning home after the end of her marriage and reconnecting with the aunt who raised her. I like Britta and found myself rooting for her character to regain her confidence and sense of self that was lost during her marriage. The secondary characters are made up of the local shop keepers in the village. They are a diverse, fun, eclectic group that adds to the enjoyment of the story. The one think I find with this author is that her books tend to be more character driven and that the mystery tends to take a back seat. That holds true for this story as well, but this author writes such wonderful characters that the stories are very enjoyable and entertaining.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy provided to me by the publisher, Kensington, through Netgalley.

Kate Dyer-Seeley has taken us back to Oregon in this new series and again she has written a cliff hanger of a mystery that keeps you turning the pages. Britta has spent the last few years supporting her husband who is writing a book, she has had to put her own artistic talent with flowers on hold whilst he has the latest writing toys etc, when she discovers he has been doing in depth "research" with another woman Britta ups, packs and heads home to her Aunt Elin (also her guardian in times past as her parents were killed in a car crash), her Aunt owns a flower shop Blomma and is about to open a workshop space, the only hitch is the dead body of a developer who wanted to buy up the whole area! Now Britta needs to relearn about flowers, discover who she can trust and allow herself to live again.

Once again, Kate Dyer-Seeley/Ellie Alexander has created a gem of a story. Everything I love about her writing is there -- the great characters with their heartfelt relationships, the great storyline, the stumping mystery, and the cozy setting.

My only complaint is that this was an ARC, and the book isn't due out for 2 more months... which means the wait for #2 is going to be a very long one, and I"m dying to know what will happen.

Highly recommended for anyone who loves flowers, cozies, a bit of romance, and Kate/Ellie's writing in general!

*5 Stars

Natural Thorn Killer by Kate Dyer-Seeley is a great start to a new series. I am a huge fan of Ellie Alexander, so when I realized that she also writes as Kate Dyer-Seeley, I was beyond thrilled.

Britta, the main character, returns to her home town of Portland after a tumultuous marriage. Returning home to her Aunt Elin unleashes the designer in her and her floral creativity took my breath away. The author describes Britta's floral designs in such vivid ways, that I could see and smell her creations while I was reading.

Elin has created a floral cottage, equipped to offer classes and her one of a kind arrangements. Having Britta there to help is a joy to Elin, as they have a very special bond.
Of course, every small community has it's big shot, and Portland is no different. Frank's overbearing presence doesn't go over well the local business owners and when he is found dead in Elin's floral cottage, no one seems too upset.

Britta offers as much help as she can to local detective, who along with police officer Tomo, is trying to put this murder investigation to rest.

All the characters in this story work as a unit, they all meld together and truly create a believable story.
I had a wonderful time losing myself in this story and the author should be so proud of the story she told.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

Natural Thorn Killer caught my eye because it is set in my home town. . . so into the breach I go. We are a floral lot, that it true, but this one got to me. So much floral talk. Still, there was a dead man, and a mystery to solve - I stayed put.

Britta is running from a dud marriage, and moves in with her auntie Elin, and the community members from there are appealing. Then shows up the handsome Detective Pete, and it got more engaging for me. Still Britta is no sleuther. . .she asks questions here and there, will take clues others hand her, but she risks nothing even in her behaviors with others. It was hard to connect.

For all that, I stayed to the end, and when I called who the killer was 1/2 way through - I was wrong. So points added back in for that and we get to 3 stars. Which means I'll read the next one - but if there isn't soon a mention of Powell's Books, Annie's, Broadway's, Wallace's? Belmont, Foucault's, Melville, Daedalus, Backstory or Green Bean? Portland is a book city as much as it is a floral spot! 25|52:4c

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Great start to this new series. Britta has moved back home to and decides to help her Aunt at the flower store as she opens a new addition. Just as they are gearing up for the grand opening they find a dead body in the shop with them being the main suspects. Well of course she has to start asking question to find out what really happened. Instead she find a bunch of secrets and puts herself in danger. The identity of the killer was a nice surprise. This book is a pleasant combination of personality, flower details, murder clues, and more all placed until an eclectic small town to give it a nice flair. I highly recommend it to fans of cozy mysteries that have a floral flair to them. I really enjoyed it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Natural Thorn Killer by Kate Dyer-Seeley is the first installment in A Rose City Mystery series. Britta Johnston has been putting her dreams on hold (having her own floral shop) and working two jobs so her husband, Chad can work on his novel (he needs to concentrate on it fully). When Britta discovers that Chad is having an affair, she decides it is time for a change. Britta packs up her belongings and heads back home to Portland, Oregon where her Aunt Elin lives and has her floral boutique and wine bar combination, Blooma. Aunt Elin raised Britta and is happy to have her return. The timing is perfect since Elin is getting ready for the grand opening of her cottage that will feature classes/workshops on floral design (flower jewelry for example). Britta is soon immersed in running Blooma, but not everything is rosy. Someone is leaving dead roses at the shop and a seedy real estate developer is intent on buying up Riverplace Village (where BLooma and other charming shops are located). Britta is opening up Blooma one morning and notices the doors to the cottage are open. She goes inside and finds Frank Jaffe, the developer, on the floor with Elin’s floral shears sticking out of his chest and roses scattered on the floor. Detective Pete Fletcher hones in on Elin as the killer which makes Britta determined to dig up the guilty party.

In Natural Thorn Killer I was drawn right away into the story. I liked the author’s conversational writing style. The book had a nice steady pace and good flow. The two main characters of Britta and Elin are engaging and relatable. I liked their creative energy and ideas. I appreciated that the author gave the characters a Swedish background and had Swedish words/phrases sprinkled throughout the story. Two side characters that added to the story were Nora who owns Demitasse (spunky) and Officer Tomo Iwamoto (great personality). I enjoyed the descriptions of the Riverplace Village where Blooma was located. It sounds just charming and has a nice small-town feel (even though it is in Portland). The author included some interesting facts about Portland. I did feel that it was too soon for a romance for Britta since she just left her cheating husband. I really hope that there will not be a love triangle (there are hints of it). The author included wonderful descriptions of the flowers and arrangements created at Blooma along with interesting facts about the flowers. She really brought them alive with her words. The one downfall of the book was the mystery. There were a limited number of suspects and little investigation (just some questioning). There was a lack of action and the reveal was disappointing. I wish the author had found a different way to wrap up the book (it was more supposition that fact). The why part of the murder was slightly farfetched. At the end there are tips for increasing the longevity of a bouquet of flowers, recipe for Swedish pancakes, and how to pair flowers with wine (never thought of that before). I give Natural Thorn Killer 4 out of 5 stars. If the mystery had been more compelling, I would have been a very happy reader. The next book in A Rose City Mystery series is Violet Tendencies.

Synopsis:

Cut down among the flowers . . .

Britta Johnston might be a late bloomer, but after leaving her deadbeat husband and dead-end job, she's finally pursuing her artistic passion at her aunt Elin's floral boutique, Blooma, in Portland, Oregon. It's on the banks of the Willamette, in a quaint district of cobblestone paths and cherry trees. The wine bar featuring Pacific Northwest vintages is a tasty bonus, offering another kind of bouquet to enjoy. But things aren't as peaceful as they look.

For one thing, someone's been leaving dead roses around--and a sleazy real estate developer who wants the waterfront property has put a big-money offer on the table. Then, after a contentious meeting of local business owners, he's found on the floor of the shop, with Elin's garden shears planted in his chest. And before the police decide to pin the crime on her beloved aunt, Britta will have to find out who arranged this murder . . .(Goodreads)

Review:

The characters are well rounded and well developed. I enjoyed reading about the relationship between Britta and her aunt Elin. You can tell that they love each other very much and are happy to be reunited again. Elin is a real wiz with flowers and Britta is happy to be working with flowers again. Her life has taken a downward turn but she really wants to be happy again. It will be hard because she lost her confidence while she was married to her jerk of a husband, but she is determined to get it back. When, shortly after she arrives in Portland, a dead body is found, she realizes that she has to find the culprit before her aunt is sent away permanently.

The writing style flows smoothly and the book is a quick easy way. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was right there in Portland being part of the community. Her descriptions of the flowers and creations that they made made me feel like I could smell them and see them in my mind’s eye. You can tell that the author knows a lot about flowers or she did a lot of research (I think she probably knows a lot about them). I also liked the flower tips included at the end of the book.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. If you like vivid descriptions and enjoy flowers, you will want to read this story.

I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the publisher, Kensington Books, and NetGalley, which I greatly appreciate.

Happy Reading, friends!

NATURAL THORN KILLER BY KATE E. DYER-SEELEY BOOK REVIEW
A florist with a second chance that’s based in Portland, Oregon? Heck, yes! I’m so excited about this new cozy mystery series.

FAMILY IS FOREVER
My favorite part of this book is the relationship between Britta & her Aunt Elin. That’s one of the reasons I love cozies. Readers met these phenomenal characters & we slowly learn more about them throughout the series. Blooma & Elin are no different.

They have a very special relationship. Elin gives Britta a second chance when she leaves her deadbeat husband. Rather than scolding her, or judging her, Elin welcomes her with open arms. Immediately, Elin all but hands over the creative reins to Britta. Both female characters are strong, smart & determined. I LOVE it!

MURDER WITHOUT THE GORE
There are a few different mystery aspects in the book. Of course, I ate them up with a spoon. There are dead roses being left behind for someone. A shady real estate developer is dead and this book is filled with a cast of characters, all of whom could be the murderer.

Ellie Alexander/ Kate E. Dyer-Seeley does a great job keeping the suspense up. I read a few chapters at a time & finished the book over a week. While reading, I found myself thinking of the characters, dreaming up possible motives. That, my friends, is a sign of a great mystery.

THE VERDICT
I am Really Into This book! When I find a new series to love, its like I stumbled upon a pot of gold. Ellie Alexander/ Kate E. Dyer-Seeley has a knack for quick-witted, strong female characters & I’m excited to dive head first into this series.

Special thanks to Kate E. Dyer-Seeley / Ellie Alexander & Kensington Books for providing our copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.

I enjoyed this book. It wasn't a heavy mystery story, it was more about relationships and flowers. I liked the characters. I think it would be fun to see how this series continues with the characters. I've always loved flowers and if I was good at it, I would probably own a flower shop, alas, I'm not. I found this entertaining.

This is a new series by Kate Dyer Seeley. Its centered on a floral shop in Portland and the main character comes back to help her aunt run it after leaving her unhappiness in her relationship behind. The main character, Britta, has a gift in creating beautiful floral arrangements, and everything about designing flowers is just what she needed--until a dead body shows up in her aunt's flower shop. Now she must deal with a cop eager to pin it on her and her aunt, plus hold the business together and turn out orders for their customers, as well as reconcile her own personal crossroads she has arrived at with the support of her aunt. An intriguing read into what the daily tasks and maintenance are of a flower shop plus a cozy whodunit.

Natural Thorn Killer, the first book in Kate Dyer-Seeley’s Rose City Mysteries, is a gem. Filled with lively and lovable characters, a suspenseful mystery, and a heartwarming touch, this book just shines. As an added bonus, the book contains a recipe for Swedish pancakes.

After discovering her husband has been unfaithful, Britta Johnston returns to her hometown in Portland, Oregon, where she works with Elin, the aunt who raised her, at Blomma, Elin’s flower shop. Riverplace Village, where Blomma is located, is a quaint community populated with unique and intriguing shops, such as Torch, a local candle store. Unfortunately, a developer has decided he wants to turn the whimsical town into an upscale mall, and is offering top dollar to the shop owners, who, as a whole are trying to resist his efforts. When the main proponent of the new development is found stabbed in Blomma’s cottage (using a pair of the store’s shears), suspicion turns to Elin and Britta. To their credit, the local police do interview a large number of suspects in a quest to determine the killer. When their efforts appear to be stalling, Britta takes up her own investigation, determined to clear her aunt’s – and her own – name.

There are so many nice touches to this book. Blomma, the name of the flower shop reflects both the Swedish language and culture, and both Britta and Elin use Swedish expressions from time to time, but never enough to make it annoying. The attention to detail is remarkable, with avid descriptions of the flowers and flower making process. It is easy to see that, for Britta, flower arrangement is a labor of love.

The mystery, while not overly complex, is filled with an unending series of twists and turns. Just when you think you have identified the suspect, facts emerge to cross him (or her) off your list. Britta’s investigation continues on in a logical manner until the suspenseful climax where she faces real danger from the perpetrator.

The police, for once, are not inept. There are two main investigators. Tomo Iwamoto, a young officer with an easy-going demeanor who also occasionally fills in at his mom’s ramen noodle restaurant, befriends Britta. (Warning: do not read this part when hungry, the descriptions of the food are mouth-watering.) The other officer, Pete Fletcher is an experienced detective, who, over the course of the investigation develops a romantic interest in Britta.

But best of all is Britta’s relationship with Elin. We get so see so many aspects of this multifaceted relationship, filled with events and circumstances that changed the trajectory of both of their lives. The heart-wrenching and life-affirming backstory comes out, not as a narrative chunk (as in many books), but through the course of conversation. It is handled in a touching and thoughtful manner.

Finally, it is worth noting that I read the second book in this series several years ago as one of the first ARCs I received. I really enjoyed it and always planned on reading this book. And I’m so glad I finally did. It is also worth noting that Kate Dyer-Seeley also writes as Ellie Alexander, whose Bakeshop Mystery series is one of my favorites.

The only thing wrong with Natural Thorn Killer is that there are only two books in this fantastic series. I fell in love with these characters. If you’re looking for a poignant mystery that will engage both your acumen and your senses, look no further. Natural Thorn Killer has it all.

NATURAL THORN KILLER by Kate Dyer-Seeley
The First Rose City Mystery

Britta Johnston lives a lackluster existence in Minnesota working at a mind numbing wholesale florist company to support her husband who's been writing the great American novel for years. When she discovers he's cheating on her, she stops kowtowing to him, packs her bags, and returns to Portland, Oregon and the aunt who raised her. The timing is perfect for Aunt Elin as she's getting ready to launch a new part of her floral boutique and wine bar, but not so perfect for the loud egocentric real estate developer who wants to raze the entire shopping village to make way for new development. After a contentious shop owner meeting, Britta finds him dead in Blomma surrounded by roses. Now Britta finds herself in the middle of a murder investigation while making a new life for herself.

NATURAL THORN KILLER is a delightful start to a new series. The setting is unique and described so vividly it was easy to see myself walking through the village and stopping at all of the wonderful shops. The characters are engaging with backstory evident and starting to ooze out. I especially liked how the author brought different cultures to the fore. The addition of Swedish language and culture not only brought interest, but a feeling of hygge. I also loved the character of Tomo, not only his fun loving attitude, but his Japanese culture. And I want some of his mom's noodles!

With attention to detail, well developed characterization, and a captivating plot NATURAL THORN KILLER is a winner.

I was drawn to this new series by its setting. Portland - and the Pacific Northwest - are favorites of mine. Add flowers, especially roses, the flower that gives the city its nickname, the Rose City, I was hooked. The characters are well developed and fit their setting perfectly. Britta has a talent for flower arranging and roses but she has not been able to follow her passion, stuck in a ho hum job in a floral warehouse and fully supporting her dead beat husband. When she finally snaps, she packs her bags, tosses them into her car and hits the road to return home to Portland and the comfort of her maternal aunt Elin and her floral boutique called Blomma. Feeling the stress leave her and looking forward to the start of a new chapter in her life, Britta thinks all is well...until a local developer, one who was determined to buy up the river front 'village' housing Blomma, a boutique hotel and lots of artisan businesses is found murdered in the floral workshop of Blomma.
There is a large well developed cast of characters and a satisfying mystery all laid out at a comfortable pace. I felt the warmth and welcome of the flowers and I would love to be able to stop by and pick out flowers every week while getting a latte next door. Knowing that there will be another entry in this series in November, Violet Tendencies, I am saving a space for it on my TBR list.
My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Natural Thorn Killer by Kate Dyer-Seeley is the 1st book in the new series, Rose City Mysteries. Britta Johnston discovers her husband is cheating on her, after she has been the sole provider for years, so he can write his novel. Fed up, she leaves him that night and goes to Portland, Oregon to help out at her Aunt Elin's florist shoppe, Bloom. When a shady real estate developer is found dead, and Elin becomes a suspect, Britta must find the truth. I really enjoyed this book, not only is it a good mystery, it is great to see Britta grow as a women. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. I can not wait for the next book in the series. If you love cozy mysteries, I recommend this book.

I received this book from Netgalley in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I love this new series! Kate really has a way with words - I looooooved all the flower talk. :) One thing I love about Kate‘s books is how they make me want whatever’s in the book. The Sloan Krause series makes me want beer (not really a stretch 😏), the Bakeshop series makes me want to bake, the PNW series makes me want to hike, and this Rose City series makes me want to BUY ALL THE FLOWERS. 🌷💕😍 The mystery was intriguing enough to make me wonder about people and motives along the way, Britta’s a good/likable female lead, and there are plenty of fun/interesting side characters. I can’t wait to see where this series goes.
