Broad coverage of topics, though very encyclopaedic

The author's approach to teaching PHP development rather than just PHP programming is the right one. However, most later chapters deal with too broad a spectrum of topics such as Ansible, Packagist, jMeter and AWS and in a very cursory, tutorial-like style which just use up book space and reading time. Forgettable chapters. On the other hand, the PHP programming part of the book makes it a good resource for people who want to learn PHP. This is a book for developers who want to learn PHP 7, as it presumes some OO background.

A must-read book. Incredibly thorough on the all the necessary bits you need to get up to speed on PHP version 7, assuming you're coming from version 5.
That's pretty much the first half of the book. The second half has lots of interesting ancillary information to help to improve your general skills. Most of that is really fantastic too. Parts of it are spotty certainly, providing little real useful info, but it's all icing on a really good cake.
