Stargate Universe the comic book begins right where Season Two of the acclaimed science fiction TV series ended, with the crew and unwilling passengers of Destiny set to cross a vast expanse of space with no margin for error. With almost all of the crew of the ancient starship Destiny in suspended animation, only Eli Wallace is left awake to repair his own stasis pod before time runs out. While he races against time, a new and unexpected danger threatens the fragile plan designed to keep everyone alive and away from the aliens who had been pursuing them. What strange new menace confronts Eli, Colonel Young, Doctor Rush and the others? You’ll have to pick up this issue to find out!
As much as I loved the other Star Gate TV series SG*U was a complete train wreck. An attempt to combine : Battlestar Gallactica Grey's Anatomy (rattle trap old ship plus pretty young people with enough emotional damage that they cannot form healthy relationships) and shoe horn in the Star Gate mythos. Came across as the work of coked up monkeys on a deadline. This was the only time I stopped watching an SG series out of self preservation. I feared for my intellect. ......... The show was rightly cancelled but the few fans it had managed to acquire were still in love with it and in withdrawal.(as a Firefly fan i can empathize) Along comes a comic series picking up where the show left off. And DAMN it's good. If the TV show was this well written it would not have been cancelled. Clever and exciting this is what wanted all along.
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I want to change my scoring by 0.50 or more of a star. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
I'm finally going through my physical tv, film etc. tie in library owned book list, to add more older basic reviews. If I liked a book enough to keep then they are at the least a 3 star.
I'm only adding one book per author and I'm not going to re-read every book to be more accurate, not when I have 1000s of new to me authors to try (I can't say no to free books....)
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
A fun start to what I hope will be a wonderful continuation of this great show and franchise. Most people seemed to hate SG:U because of its differences from SG-1 and SG:A, but I think that's what drew me in. I love SG-1 and SG:A, but we really didn't need yet a 3rd installment of the team exploring a galaxy that we got with both of those shows. The appealing thing about SG:U was the deeper understanding of where the Ancients were going and how they planned to seed the universe with Stargates. The fact that it was a little darker like BSG and focused on the fear and anxiety of being stuck on a ship with literally no way home made it all the more appealing in my book. As a long time SG fan, I'm excited that we are getting to see the continuation of this series (and SG:A) in comic book form since it is apparent that we won't be able to see it play out on television.
This book is, in my opinion, as poor an idea as the writing and directing efforts of Stargate Universe Season 1. The part that was SO FRUSTRATING about season 1, was the constant jumping back and forth to act out some piece of history of a character that could have -- and SHOULD have -- been nothing more than a brief mention in passing. Having to jump back to the past, especially as often as season 1 did, is an indication to me that the story is coming from a really bad storyteller.
The "graphic novel" as it is so often erroneously called, is just as disjointed in time as season 1 of the show. It is WAY overpriced, of extremely poor artistic quality (the characters hardly even resemble the actors), and story is devoid of any real plot. We have an imagination, so you need not jump back and forth, but rather let us fill it in for ourselves. If we get it wrong, we'll figure it out later, which will be fun for us as well, because it could trigger a whole series of "what-if's" in our minds that keep us daydreaming for hours.
When writing a graphic novel, use amazing graphics because we want to be drawn into picturing Destiny in our minds, and feel as though we are right there with them. Today, 2D graphics of the pre-70's era just aren't going to cut it! More importantly, you cannot give us amazing CG for a couple of years, and then drop back to pencil drawings and expect us to love it -- or even remotely like it.
Season 2 of the TV series was significantly better, which makes these graphic novels even that much worse. We saw aliens and had enough time to form an initial feeling of whether we liked them or not, before the episode ended. The same is not so in these graphic novels. There's insufficient substance for us to build up the story and characters in our mind, so it never makes it beyond our short-term memory. Personally, I say stop wasting time on the graphic flop-els, educate the writers and director staff, and try to get someone like Netflix or Hulu to support the work.
For me this comic is a disappointment. I fealt the writer want to resolve the Cliffhanger as short as possible to start his new narrative.
Eli figure out that the blue glow around the Destiny is an Energy stream and decide he charge the Destiny from this energy stream. Why? This is recharge an electry car with a wind turbine on the top of the car troll logic science... I think the Ancient programed the Destiny to do that if it is posible. The second thing from the Second issue. The Ancient learn english just 30second. Yeah the Ancient smarts but don't learn a language without any information. If someone speak some sentencase, it isnt any information to understand the language...

So far, an interesting continuation from the tv series, but it suffers a few issues:
- The artwork needs improvement. Many panels look like rough sketches instead of finished works. - The writing/dialogue is choppy. - The pages feel like a cheap magazine or tissue paper. - The page count/story is very short for the cost of this bindup.
Overall, this entire graphic novel feels like a rough draft instead of an edited and complete work, but the plot has captivated me, so I will likely get the next one if/when released.
Total let down. The idea is good, but was not executed right. Little to no explanation was given as to what happened really. The explanations given had me shaking my head.
I was excited once I found out about this! Universe was definitely not my favourite of the tv-shows, but I enjoyed it enough that the cliffhanger left me wanting to know what happened.
It was also too short. I felt one scene we got a big piece of news and then the next another and another, but with no clarification or thought.
The characters also felt off. They were not the same. So different from what I grew to know in the Tv series.
Read it if you cant not know what happens, but I wish I left it at the cliffhanger.
A rather poor introduction. We're told about things that have happened and it's rather 'meh'. Not to mention the random past scene blips were unnecessary and didn't make the story flow well. The main plot idea could possibly have potential and might turn out to be interesting in other issues, but this issue itself is just a short unsatisfying beginning. Also not a fan of the art style.
Story is really short, and throwing in a VERY short Stargate Atlantis story doesn't make up the shortfall. I might buy volume two, but if it's this short, I definitely won't buy anymore.
I liked this introduction to Stargate Universe in a comic book forum. And the Stargate Atlantis sneak peek was a great bonus read. Thank you Mark Haynes a new fan.
Short sweet and a little bit of a cheat. When we left of SGU things were pretty dire, this glosses over what good have been a great character arc for Eli and fixes most of the problems with the ship in the blink of an eye (not even a convenient turn of the page). It was just a little too easy.
I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this continuation of Stargate Universe exists, after feeling the disappointment of finishing the last TV episode with its non-ending. However, why is this issue so short? I'm just not used to reading comics, I guess. If only it was a novel.
Really enjoyed this sequel to the excellent short-lived series which I considered superior to SG-1 and Atlantis for its more serious content and stronger acting. I’m m looking forward to reading the next two comics the the three-part series.
Any novel, graphic or literary, should tell an actual story. All this did was set up the next "graphic novel." It ignores parts of the Universe story & just adds stuff out of the blue.
Five stars because I really wanted to see the story of Stargate Universe continue. There is not enough story in this fist comic to have an opinion on how I feel about the story so I think I will give a review after I finish reading the entire series.
Great insight to what direction the show was going
Great insight to what direction appears were going. I wish more cancelled shows would do this. Debris and OA come to mind as shows that could have used a comic book ending.
Not worth it. Literally nothing happened and then it was the end. Don’t waste the time or money. I expected a to be continued, but this barely took 5 minutes to read.
I was pleased to have a continuation of the story but I don't feel there was enough content for the price. I'm not willing to pay that price for each future installment.
