An introduction to the traditions, festivities, and history of Cinco de Mayo for the youngest readers. This fact-filled Rookie Read-About Holiday book introduces the youngest readers (Ages 3-6) to Cinco de Mayo. Colorful photos and very simple nonfiction text encourage children to read on their own as they take an in-depth look at the Mexican holiday known as Cinco de Mayo, which commemorates a battle for freedom fought in Mexico in 1861, and describes how it is celebrated today.

The Rookie Read-About books consistently provide a clear and interesting introduction to American holidays for my ESL students, and the Cinco de Mayo volume is no exception. A few pronunciation guides seemed off ("mahr-re-AH-che"), but the pictures selected accurately portayed a variety of ethnicities and landscapes, and lightly touched upon American celebrations while emphasizing Mexican history and culture. Nothing fancy, just right.

Was assigned this book in class. This book was simply a sight word book that teaches students the importance of the holiday and also teaching them vocab at the same time.

A non fiction book with photographs that show the fun celebration of Cinco de Mayo. There is also some history of how the holiday got started.
