Storm Raiders: Age of Magic: A Kurtherian Gambit Series: Storms of Magic, Book 1
Written by: P. T. Hylton, Michael Anderle
Narrated by: Gabra Zackman
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I just loved this book! So much action, mystery, good old time swash-buckling adventure, magic, fights, and so much more that it kept me glued to the story. The heroine is trying to prove her father is not a murderer but set up. She must do what she can to do this, she ends up one a ship. Everyone believes the ship keeps the pirates away...she learns so much on her adventure that changes her live and everyone in town. Great magic, characters, adventure, fights, mysteries, twists with twists.
The narrator is female but that doesn't stop her from being a gruff pirate and making you believe it! So many voices and so many situations done perfectly. They couldn't have picked a better person for the job!
Well done all the way around!

This audiobook was a rather entertaining listen. This was my first experience with the writing pair of P.T. Hylton and Michael Anderle and I was pretty impressed with it overall. I decided to listen to this book because the premise appealed to me and I have really enjoyed Gabra Zackman's narration in the past. I was hooked really early in the story and listened to the book in just a few short days. I had a lot of fun with this entertaining story.

The book is focused on two main characters. Abbey is the daughter of the local blacksmith. She is tough, smart, and has a little bit of magic. Abbey and her father are very close and many in their city consider them to be outsiders since they come from another area. Dustin has been training to be a storm caller for years and is facing the final test as the book opens. Things don't go exactly as Dustin hopes in his test but he plans to make the most of the situation.

I really enjoyed the world that was created in this book. The magic is really interesting and I liked how Abbey questions it. The book had a bit of a pirate feel with the ships and some of their actions. Each of the ships has their own storm caller that can shape the weather in their own favor. The ships were very important to the towns and ruled by the captain and storm caller in most cases.

The book was exciting from the beginning. There are a few battles and fights spreads through the book that provided plenty of action. The mystery centered around Abbey's father was very interesting and I really enjoyed learning more about his past. I loved watching Abbey and Dustin both deal with the reality of what they learn about their world.

I enjoyed Gabra Zackman's narration of this book. She handled a fairly large cast of characters very well by using a variety of voices. She was able to put a lot of emotion into her voice and made the exciting scenes seem a bit more thrilling. The dialogue in the book flowed very well and I thought she was able to really bring the story to life.

I would recommend this book to others. I had a lot of fun listening to this action packed story filled with wonderful characters. I would love to learn what happens next for this group.

I received an review copy of this book from LMBPN Publishing via Audiobook Access.

Another worthy addition to TKG!

I approached this book with a bit of trepidation... I don't often like fantasy/sci-fi that focuses around navies and ship battles. Storm Raiders was definitely an exception. No matter what, I'd have read it through, because, well, "TKG yo"... and instead I find myself extremely disappointed that book 2 isn't already ready for me to nab!

Some of the highest praise you can give an author, in my opinion, is to crave more of their writing. Even more so if you like their writing so much, you're ready to grab whatever else they've written, even if it isn't in the same universe you "met" them in.

Well, guess whose other books I'm grabbing as soon as I submit this review?

Not bad

Storm Raiders is not a bad story but to me it feels like the characters are just rushing from one disaster to the next without much of a break. The story itself I feel felt rushed and decided it didn't want to take any time. It was well written and not a bad story I just didn't care for that rushed feeling. Many people will probably love that it is really fast paced. I am hoping that book 2 will feel less rushed.

An entertaining sword and sorcery adventure for teens
4 stars

The female narrator is okay. She has a pleasant low voice with excellent inflection, emphasis, and pronunciation. She is great at pacing, especially during action scenes. However, it annoyed me that she made all of the older male characters sound almost exactly the same. What is worse, randomly at the beginning of countless paragraphs, she sounds like a flat male robot for half a sentence and then turns her voice into her appropriate regular female voice. This happened way too often during the midsection of the audiobook. She was really good at the voices of the two main characters, a male and female each in their upper teens.

This is a sword and sorcery fantasy novel that is suitable for teens. There is mild to moderate violence involved but absolutely no sexual content. The book itself is nicely exciting, and I liked the version of magic in the story. I love the origin story idea in the prologue: like Anne McCaffrey's Pern world or Terry Brooks' books, the story takes place in the far future when humanity has regressed to a medieval European level of technology. In this future Earth, an apocalypse of madness and genetic mutations reduced the human population, and the survivors' mutations are called magic. The people no longer know humanity's history, and the small groups of people only have myths and legends. In this world, we follow two young people, Abbie and Dustin, who are approximately 19 years old. They were childhood friends but then grew apart. The young lady is generous, admirable, and likeable, but sometimes she is too quick to reach for her sword. The young man is overly arrogant and takes too long to get over it.

My main problem with the writing is that the book is a little too stupid. The writers mildly underestimate the intelligence of the reader. I figured out just about everything before the characters did. Sometimes I want plot revelations to be just as surprising to me as it is to the characters. Overall, the writing was decent.

Note: This series is part of a much bigger series and is technically Book 59 of The Kurtherian Gambit Universe. This book works just fine as a stand alone.

This was the book of badassery I needed and didn’t even knew existed until a few weeks ago. Perhaps I’ve been living under a rock. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale. The characters were fun, the plot was full of action, and the world building drew me in completely.

Abbey is my favorite character. She’s been working in her dad’s blacksmithery all her life and playing with sharp pointy things since she could stand. She’s a full on action hero in this book but she’s also NOT a cliched broken character that needs to find redemption or her place in life. She comes from a loving single-parent home and has self-confidence.

Sid was my second favorite character. She’s a warrior on board the ship that Abbey sneaks onto after her dad is falsely accused of murder. She’s bald headed and swings two swords like nobody’s business. She’s also a great commander in battle. Such a practical woman! Then there’s Dustin, who took longer to grow on me. He’s just recently gotten his cloak and staff and is officially now a Storm Caller. Yay Dustin! Dustin initially is a little standoffish to Abbey but he comes around, especially after Abbey saves his life a time or two.

Benjamin, Abbey’s dad, has a past that adds some mystery to the mix. He also has a special staff that is a bit of magictech from his hometown of Arkadia. Tor and Dallia are the foremost Storm Captain and Storm Caller of Holdgate. They sail the Thunderclap and they and their crew are always treated as heroes when they return to port.

The plot has these Viking-like reavers that the Storm ships are suppose to repel, protecting Holdgate and nearby settlements. However, Abbey and Dustin find out that not all is on the up and up on their first trip out. Once I learned the full extent of it, I briefly wondered how such a secret was kept with perhaps as many as 300 Holdgate citizens involved. Later we find out that certain people have been suspicious that something was afoot but hadn’t put it all together yet. Plus, you need a very strong case to take down the instigators.

They story was well paced bouncing between quieter moments where someone is learning a bit of magic or have a useful conversation and bigger moments where buildings are on fire and juiced up warriors are trying to take your head! Plenty of snarky comments are tossed around, making me laugh out loud at times. There’s a real sense of camaraderie among the main characters.

All told, this was a delight. It has the epic fantasy feel to it while being a book you can listen to in a day. This tale ended well, answering most of the questions presented but leaving just enough open for the sequel. I’m ready for Book 2!

I received a free copy of this book.

The Narration: Gabra Zackman was great for this book. She was the perfect Abbey, pulling off the snark and Abbey’s emotions with ease. Her male voices were all distinct and sounded like men. I love her calm, collected voice for Sid even in the heat of battle. Zackman’s narration really added to suspense and action. Awesome narration all around.

3.5 Stars!!!

This was difficult to rate. I really enjoyed the story, and I really liked the idea of Storm Magic, it was a novel approach. But there were lots that I maybe necessarily didn’t dislike, but thought could have been done better. Then again I don’t know what age group this book was aimed at, so maybe a younger reader may have liked the way it was done.

For me the story moved too quickly. There is a difference between fast paced novel and one that skimps on detail. For example, the biggest and most dangerous ship on the fleet, with the World’s greatest Captain and Storm Caller, Abbey somehow managed to get from the mountains and climb aboard it and hide! I felt there were many times in the book where the author had a chance to really go into detail and build some suspense or depth. That lack of depth meant I had no affinity with any of the characters. For each main character I want to discover what gifts they have and what flaws they possess, within the first couple of pages Abbey was a self-proclaimed badass, who was a great swordfighter and could use magic. That is a great collection of traits but they were all laid immediately. Also when someone is a self-proclaimed anything they usually are difficult to like.

I think this book could easily lend itself well to a television show. Fast paced, exciting, easy to follow, not much background and scope for story expansion. I will read the next book and see where this goes!

I stumbled onto this book by complete happenstance. I listened to it on Spotify, from a generated playlist for fantasy books first chapters. I was hooked from the start. Gabra Zackman is a genius when it comes to narrating, and she played a huge part in me listening through the entire series!

Some books are best read, others are absolute gems in audio format. This one is the latter. The fluidity of the combat scenes, the banter between the characters, it was fantastic. It made the whole journey of this novel immensely enjoyable.

I didn't know anything about the author(s) going into this, and I haven't read anything from the Kutherian Gambit series. I don't really intend to, as it doesn't seem to really be in the same genre as this series. It works perfectly fine as a standalone series.

I really recommend this to anyone who wants a fun take on a magic system, and to live the intrepid lives of Dustin and Abbey. It will make you want to continue reading until the very last page of the very last book!

Abbey works in her fathers’ blacksmith shop, in the city of Holdgate, where everyone patrons their shop but also views them as outsiders for not being born in Holdgate. Abbey has a sort of ‘push-pull’ type of magic, but she doesn’t like using it and prefers to just work or practice with a sword.

Dustin has been training to be one of the cities elite Storm Callers. On the day of his testing, Dustin is taken out on a boat to a rock in the middle of the sea. Once there a Storm Caller summons a massive storm and rows away, leaving Dustin on the rock. Dustin must calm the storm so that he is safely able to swim to shore. If he drowns, then he has not been accepted by the sea and, if he makes it back to shore he officially becomes a Storm Caller. But, when Abbey sees him drowning in the sea, she uses her magic to pull him towards her. The relevant people don’t see this and Dustin is made a Storm Caller and assigned a ship and Captain.

That night, the city guard comes to Abbey’s home and arrests her father for a murder Abbey knows he didn’t commit. Believing there is a conspiracy afoot the city’s most successful ship ‘Thunderclap’, Abbey convinces Dustin to allow her to stow away on his ship so that she can find the truth.

================

This book was fairly fun to read, fast-paced and I got through it in about a day. I would have liked more attention to detail, stronger world-building and more structure to the magic element. There is a sense of when a character needs to use their magic, in a way that does not obey the previously set rules of that particular brand of magic the rules just seem to get changed to fit where the story has gone.

That being said, I quite liked the overall storyline and did enjoy reading it. It wasn’t too deep and moved through the stages of the plot reasonably well. I would have liked a bit more world-building but from what I understand, whilst this is the first book in this series, it’s the 59th set in this world. So perhaps the world-building happens slowly, little by little over the other books. But I am not going to invest my time into the whole world at this stage. I may read the second in this particular series in the next couple of months to see where it goes as the ending was good and left me wondering what could happen next. If I were scoring this book out of ten it would get 6.67, when I read the second book there will need to be some improvement on that, or I will just abandon the series there.

Holdgate is a regular seafaring community that has storm mages that are there to help protect and defend the town along with helping captains on ships. Abby and her father came from another town when Abby was an infant. Her father is the local blacksmith but everyone always looks down on them as outsiders. Dustin is a young storm mage that grew up with Abby but then followed the path of a storm mage and now has taken his test and passed.

Abby’s father is falsely charged with murder and Abby is determined to find the real killer. She convinced Dustin to let her on the ship he is traveling on to find the real killer and traitor to Holdgate. But there is much more happening than just a murder and Abby and Dustin are in for one heck of an adventure.

I’m sorry to say that I have never read or heard of the Kurtherian Gambit Series. I went into this story fresh and absolutely loved it. I felt for Abby always being the outsider even though she grew up in Holdgate. But finding out about her father’s past was a great twist.

Dustin was a bit of a pompous jerk in the beginning. He just knew that he was a powerful storm mage and Abby is quick to put him in his place. I loved how powerful he became and how it happened. That was a great twist that I didn’t expect but was hoping he would eventually figure out.

Gabra Zackman did a fantastic job narrating this story. I was drawn into this story and had a hard time walking away for regular life. I instantly purchased the complete collection of this series and can’t wait to listen to the rest of the books. It’s definitely one I recommend for the fantasy lovers out there.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily listened to it and chose to post an honest review.

3.5
3 for story, 4 for narration

Generally enjoyable and I thought Gabra Zackman did an excellent job with the narration.

The good: I liked Abby and Dustin. I liked that she's pretty much badass and he's more than willing to let her go forth and kick butt, while he takes a step back. I thought the writing was quite readable and the world, future Earth, is interesting. Though that same world seems to be part of a larger series in which several authors are creating stories. (I didn't realize that until I got to the Authors' Notes section at the end.)

The bad: I simply could not believe that there was such a large and long running conspiracy and no one knew about it. Which mean, I pretty much didn't believe the underlying premise of the mystery and plot. Further, I don't believe that even if such a large, long running conspiracy had been occurring two separate groups could undercover it in a day or two. That was all far too convenient and easy.

Personal quibble: I didn't like the cursing. Now, I don't have any issue with cussing in general. I, myself, curse like a sailor. But the book is YA and I would say on the lower side of YA. Not quite MG, but certainly I could see a tween reading it; which means the cursing seemed out of place. So, my complaint isn't any sort of prissy, moralistic one, but stylistic. It felt like the author aimed for a certain audience, which genre-wise generally doesn't include 'dirty words,' but then dropped a curse in every once in a while and then I didn't know which age bracket he was aiming for after all.

The author is a great writer.
Yes, I know, weird intro for a one star review.

Hear me out.

I loathed the inevitable love interest from the moment he opened his mouth.
I think that denotes skills. The author managed in 5 pages to make me despise this waste of oxygen and magical talent.

The problem is the author is utterly useless at story telling.

Dun Dun DUUUUUNNNN!

Yeah i know, what a twist. Did you see it coming? Then you don't need to read this badlly transcribed Harry Potter/Mary Sue fanfiction.

I did the point breakdown on the scale and she is absolutely a Mary sue. From the second she steps in to the inevitable cliffhanger end trying to hook us on to the rest of what will be increasingly convoluted yet unsatisfying plots where she magically struggle but her innate awesomeness from her natural heritage and "Mousy good looks" inexplicably make her the subject of lust from all men and most women in this trope and cliche ladden cast.

I should have known better when the inevitable inexplicably powerful yet never chastised bully decided to single her out and bend all of his dad's powers into making her life miserable.

Thinking of it i did know better but I wanted to lambast this trainwreck for a good reason and that Mary sue check list is thorough.

Skip it.

If you've never read a YA novel there are better ones out there.
If you have then you already know the plot and are wasting your time.

To the author:
Get someone else to do a plot outline ant write what they tell you. Stop rewriting your fanfiction and try to sell it to us.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I came across mention of the Storm Raiders in other series, fairly recently, and had wondered what their history was - and this book answered all the questions I'd asked myself when coming across them.

I can see why this series is interwoven with the Rise of Magic, the New Dawn, and the Hidden Magic series, and I'm really looking forwards to reading how their interwoven stories pan out, as I'm sure they must do.

Fortunately, my reading list tells me that I'm to go back to the Hidden Magic series, to read book two: Shades of Dark, which I'm looking forwards to, having enjoyed the first book.

I actually bought the Hidden Magic and Storms of Magic series together, and now I know why the publisher decided to sell them together, as their stories are so related.

Having bought this box set, as usual, I decided to review each book that I read, because each story deserves it's own praise, I totally believe!

It also helps me, as I have a very poor memory, so can look back at each review to see how much I enjoyed each one :)

I listened to the Audible version of this book. I did not realize it was part of a series until I listened to the author's notes. Obviously, it works well as a standalone. The story focuses on the city of Holdgate where some of the people are specially trained in magic to control the seas. Abby is the blacksmith's daughter and an outsider. Dustin is a young storm mage who has just graduated. They learn of a horrifying conspiracy and must fight against people they formerly revered. I really liked the pacing, action, the ships and the magical aspects. My favorite character was Abby who could seriously kick some butt, and I also really liked Sid and Captain Roy. There is a good twist with one of the villains at the end, leaving room for more adventures, which I'd love to listen to.
The only caveat I have is that there is a lot of swearing. Personally, I don't care, and have no issue with this, but this puts it out of reach of middle graders and younger YA listeners.

Storm Raiders: Age of Magic begins with the end of technology on earth. Everything has changed where magic exists. Abby and her father, Benjamin have moved to live in Holdgate and always been an outsider. The only friend that Abby has was Dustin. Since Dustin entered into his apprenticeship as a Storm Caller, he has made himself scarce to Abby.

When her father is accused of murder, Abby was going to prove her father's innocent. Dustin feeling bad for the way he has abandoned and treated Abby was willing to help her to make up his absence to her. What both discovered is that there is something sinister going down and it is bigger than her father's being framed for murder.

I love, love how the story portrayed Abby and Dustin's relationship. Even thought they are young adults, they have more growing to do and much to learn. They bickered like teenagers and from time to time, have a bit of a swagger before realizing that they need to rely on each other and the crew of Foggy Day to stop the storm raiders and traitors within Holdgates.

Storm Raiders has a very good start for A Kurtherian Gambit Series. I definitely would follow this series just to see Abby and Dustin's characters develop and if they can save their world from the storm raiders.

The narrator, Gabra Zackman does a wonderful performance of female and male voices. I couldn't tell the difference because each of the voices made the characters unique and each of the characters stands out on their own.

I was given the audiobook by the Audiobook Access. I have volunteered to write an unbiased review for the book. I was not compensated or influenced in any way in writing my review.

I had no idea that there was an extensive Kurtherian Gambit universe, or that the book I'd just started to listen to was actually the first book in a spin-off series in that universe.
The blurb sounded intriguing,  and the audio sample made me think that there might be some potential here. What I got far exceeded any expectations that I'd fostered... Between, the ships, the storms, the magic, and loads of action, I was as happy a clam... So if you're a newbie like me you're gonna love Storm Raiders as it's a perfect starting point for the series, and I expect that if you're familiar with the Kurtherian Gambit universe, this book will only make the series richer for having read it... I listened to Audible's edition of the book and found Gabra Zackman to be the perfect narrator for the story ... Best of all (for me at least) there's a whole new series of books to explore!

Pleasantly surprised....

After reading the advert, I was having a hard time seeing how this story fit in the Kutherian Gambit storyline. After reading the story I still don't see where it fits. I thoroughly enjoy reading about Bethany Anne and though this book is not about her, it held its own and was an excellent read. I like that the girls are always strong and even if the guys are obnoxious twats, they always come around to defeat the bad guy. That this was a complete story with a satisfactory conclusion while still leaving plenty of interest to see where the story takes us was an awesome bonus. Great job guys! Looking forward to the next book.

Wow! From beginning to end of this story, the listener is taken on an action packed journey of wit, danger, treachery, sword fighting, sea faring, treason, mystery, and acceptance. Storm Raiders is a really entertaining story! I would have preferred to have listened to the entire story in one setting instead of over several one hour increments. Gabra Zackman did a great job as well! Her voices and inflections were spot on. I will definitely be buying additional audiobooks in this series by Michael Anderle & P.T. Hylton. Only one warning! If you're listening to this book while driving, it is very easy to become distracted by this story. Please be careful!

Abbey moved to Holdgate with her father, where she works in her father's forge. Holdgate is known for its storm callers, or people with the magic to manipulate the weather using the sea. Her old friend Dustin, a young storm caller, helps Abbey escape, after she and her father are suspected of murder.

Wow... This book really surprised me and I am a total fan! The story is not too long, but contains the perfect combination of tension, humor and adventure. Of course with a spark of magic!
I also really enjoyed following Abbey and when Dustin came into the story it only became more fun. A great fun adventure with a perfect tension arc for the real adventurer who loves ships, storms and magic.

Storm Raiders. PT Hylton

Storm Raiders rule the sea. The protectors. They are thought of as heroes. Storm callers protect the raiders with their learned abilities and staff. They can control all elements while connected to the sea. Wind, water, lightening. They protect the storm raiders. The most worshiped storm Captain Tor and his Storm caller Dahlia are actually frauds. They are aligned with the enemy. Profit, power are their motivation. A young blacksmiths daughter and a new storm caller stand in their way. Non stop action. A truly amazing read!

A fun read, couldn't put it down!

Another great read from the Kurtherian Gambit series. Lots of action and adventure grabs your attention from the start and makes it difficult to set down. Loved the mini cliff hangers when the writers would switch from one intense action to another then leaving you dangling for a moment when he switches back. And plenty of humor sprinkled in. Looking forward to the next book.

I'm new to this author so wasn't sure what to expect. When I love a book I devour it but this book while good I could put down. In fact I had to in the middle where things got a little slow. The book feels YA/New Adult but without the annoying immaturity you typically run into. The characters have a grand adventure headed their way. This is a good start with lots of potential. I'll be reading more by this author.

A storm is brewing...

More new characters in a new series in Age of Magic! It's fascinating to see how magic has developed in this area compared to Arcadia and the Lone Islands. Definitely read The Rise of Magic and Hidden Magic if you haven't yet. Loving the high standard Michael Anderle has set for the Kurtherian Universe, and how well all the authors (and editing team, and advance readers, etc) are working together to knit one huge, epic tale.
