And find his way to the highest office in the land?
We won’t spoil it for you here, but you might have a guess…
Come join Thump and his party on the road to success!
"Deplorable, but adorable. I love these drawings and believe that every true Trumper should have one on their coffee table to confound whatever liberal friends they have left." (Chuck Dixon, Author of the New York Times #1 Bestsellers, Clinton Cash: A Graphic Novel and The Forgotten Man: Graphic Edition)
"Thump and his friends are so adorable you just want to grab them by the ears." (Lisa De Pasquale, Author of The Social Justice Warrior Handbook and I Wish I Might)
"The illustrations in this book are fantastic! And Thump the Bunny reminds me of someone, I just can't put my finger on it." (Tom Shillue, host of The Tom Shillue Show and author of Mean Dads for a Better America)
"The journey of a patriotic rabbit (Thump) battling the forces attempting to destroy the country he loves, and his willingness to jump whatever obstacles he must to Make America Great Again. Your kids will love it, so will you!" (Scott McEwen, #1 New York Times Bestselling Co-Author of American Sniper and the Nationally Bestselling Sniper Elite Series of novels)
The internet adage “Poe’s Law” indicates that, “without a clear indicator of the author’s intent, it is impossible to create a parody of extreme views so obviously exaggerated that it cannot be mistaken by some readers for a sincere expression of the parodied views.” Of course, the reverse is true as well, that no work of sincerity from an extreme view cannot be mistaken for a parody, and it’s not just confined to the internet. I found this out when I picked up Thump: The First Bundred Days at the library just the other day, expecting a silly satirical take on current events after reading through so many sobering, depressing nonfiction accounts of the state of things here in the US.
My wife is a bit of a rabbit fan, so I thought it would be fun to bring it home to have a laugh at what I assumed was a mocking look at the otherwise horrifying Trump administration, complete with what I took to be a Trumpized rabbit, with his tiny, little paws evident on the cover. Hey, wasn’t there another parody children’s book using rabbits to take the piss out of the Trump White House lately?
As I dipped into the short little comic, though, I was quickly scratching my head as to the intent of the authors. They include some of Trump’s ridiculous statements and Trumpisms, such as “yuuuuge,” and his assertion that Trump Tower has the best taco bowls and that therefore he loves Hispanic people, leading me to think surely they must be winking at the audience. However, the garish caricatures and insipid rhyming doggerel was remarkably uncritical of any of Trump’s actions or policies. As I read more gushing praise of Trump’s “achievements” and allies, and read the names of the blurbers endorsing the book, it dawned on me, holy shit, this is a pro-Trump children’s picture book parody! I blame the ludicrous standards that his campaign and administration has set that left me unable to pick up on this earlier.
I’m not going to feign any pretension to reviewers impartiality here; not only is Thump lackluster on the art and writing front, it is a disgusting, pandering celebration of Trump’s xenophobic, anti democratic, and fascisitic impulses, setting him up as a hero standing against all the evil in the world; you know, like Mexico (depicted as a mouse in a sombrero) and foreigners in general (unlike un-American manga we read comics from left to right like “normal” people!). From rubbing shoulders with fawning “kek” screaming frogs (a reference to literal white nationalist alt-righters) to drinking up those sweet “liberal tears,” this book minamilizes all the administration's policies designed to hurt people. But I’m not crying, I’m just pissed off. Why should I be reviewing this entirely pointless drivel? I’m not really accustomed to picking up random far right propaganda and having a rant on its stupidity, so why now?
Guess it’s just been building up in me and this one just happened to fall into my hands. Thump illustrates the intellectually and emotionally bankrupt viewpoints of his audience, and as I think back on some of those last elements I mentioned, the liberal tears and the manga vs normal people, I’m again left to wonder if the inclusion of such blatant boneheadedness really is a subtle attempt to make Trump look bad after all? Okay, now that I’ve written more words than the entirety of this crap, I’ll just end by saying, even as a rabbit, Trump really is the worst!
Say what you will, but this book is cute. I even got the lady at Barnes & Noble to look at a few pages while she checked me out. The art is adorable and it made me fall in love with rabbits all over again. I plan to get the plushy soon too! 5 stars for cuteness!
In case not enough people were talking about the 2016 Presidential Election, now you can get your kids to join in the conversation, too!
Thump: The First Bundred Days chronicles Thump's ascendancy from that now-famous escalator at “Thump Tower” to the highest office in America, the White House. Each page of the book took a significant (or comedic) moment from Donald Trump's candidacy and made it (mostly) kid-friendly, complete with illustrations of animals, cutesy renditions of actual events, and plenty of puns sprinkled in every now and then. Though aimed primarily at kids, this book can also appeal to adults who have an interest in Donald Trump or the 2016 Presidential Election.
The artwork for this book was very well done. The illustrations appeared whimsical enough to entertain young children, but also had enough visual humor (the kind most kids may not understand) to garner the attention of the adults reading this book. There was a nice balance between appealing to children as well as to adults, for neither was this wholly a children's book nor was it a book only adults could enjoy or understand. The writing falls under this category, as well: for children, the book was written in rhymes and detailed Thump's escapades in a childish and harmless manner; for adults, the subtle jokes and blatant references to certain people or events will hardly go unnoticed or unappreciated.
I found the puns, visual humor, references, and satirical representations in Thump: The First Bundred Days to be pretty funny and quite indicative of the craziness associated with the real-life events of the 2016 Election. The jokes are mostly aimed against Trump's opposition such as the media, Hillary Clinton, and the establishment Republican Party (though, I'm a bit saddened that Bernie Sanders didn't make an appearance – there lies so much potential!). That is not to say that this book turns a blind eye to some of Trump's own downfalls, for there are some references and visual jokes that point out a few of the more questionable things about Trump and his campaign. Though not totally objective, I think this book strikes a decent balance at showing support for the President while also poking fun at his flaws. There are far too many books out there that either jump fully on-board with Trump and see absolutely no wrong in him, and there are also too many books that exist only to defame and attack the President at every turn even if it is not warranted. I am not a fan of either extreme because I understand him to be just like the rest of us – an imperfect person – so I prefer books that are honest and objective enough to showcase this reality. By no means is Thump: The First Bundred Days the kind of objective literature one should turn to to get their unbiased fill of the 2016 Election, but it at least demonstrated a clear awareness of Trump's missteps while also giving him due credit for his more commendable actions.
Bottom-line, this was an entertaining children's book with great visuals and a good humor, and I enjoyed it a great deal even as an adult. I have had an affinity for books about rabbits ever since I was in elementary school, and I am also a staunch supporter of the President, so this book was seemingly written specifically for me! This is a cool book to have in your collection if you fancy yourself a supporter of Donald Trump, but if you are not in that "basket of deplorable" (or "basket of adorables," as this book puns), you may want to look elsewhere. Regardless of your political leanings, the artwork should be praised for being high in quality and clever throughout. And, at the very least, we can all agree that Thump is one adorable rabbit!
First I want to thank the writer and illustrators for finally giving us deplorable’s and our baby bunnies something on the positive side, lord knows it’s been just a little anti Thrump these days, just the tiniest bit. This is more of an Adult book pretending to be a children’s book, I think you can read it to the little ones because it all goes over their heads. The illustrations are spot on and loaded with great comedy they are definitely able to be enjoyed by all ages. This was a great purchase and time well spent 👍🏻👍🏻
A good friend of mine owns this book and that's how I came to know of its existence. I'm not into politics but to enjoy this book I feel you don't really have to. Its cute, its funny and it doesn't take itself to seriously. I bought my own copy to be given as a grad gift to a goid friend going into the political science field.
A Pro-Trump children’s book in which Trump is an adorable rabbit. He drinks from a bowl of liberal tears and poops in a box of media logos lined with the New York Times. “The Crooked One” (Hillary) tries to cook him into a rabbit stew but fails. His supporters are a basket of adorables. It’s parody propaganda.
But, hey, our public library has both pro and anti Trump books! Yay, libraries!
Propaganda, narrative framing 101. One star for providing insight into the narrative Trump supporters believe. Too bad for bunnies everywhere. Alex Jones illustration quite disturbing.
Great political satire from Timothy Lin. It traces "Thump's" push to the top job and is wonderfully written throughout. Readers will be amazed with the beautiful artwork as well.
