The general story did not attract and fascinate me. I didn't really communicate with any of the characters. Some of the events did not make sense to me and some were not very well explained that the reader could not trace and follow the trends. Also, 'if I'd die inside the Whisper device the same way that Inca died, would I go directly to the hell or would I see myself stumbling around a weird space as Inca was?', I mean can we sometime in the future change our "souls" to computer codes and put them into some "memory sticks" and thus get everlasting? or is it just a copy of the mind, or the very mind that transfers into Whisper? This is another drawback to the story. On the other side, the scenes and feelings were quite well explained and ideas like the Whisper Technology or the Cerebral Implant were fresh and new. Yet waiting for more from Andy Huang

The blurb sounded interesting and I got a review copy from this debut author. I have to say I was not disappointed. It was a great read. I was never quite sure what was going to happen next. While it is primarily the story of Gerrard, the story is told from multiple points of view to weave a complex and twisting story together. So we get to see the full story unfold. Full of space battles, intrigue and competing space governments it was a dark scifi story that kept me on my toes. My honest review is that I was hooked by the end of the first chapter and just had to see how it ended. I found it to be easy to read and follow the story line. I felt the scenes and battles were well described and easy to picture in my head. I cannot wait to see what happens in book 2.

Space Opera

If you like space battles, secret societies, government conspiracies and mind control, you might like this.
The author might consider reworking his space battle tactics or at least their descriptions. Everything seems to be performed on a traditional battlefield, that is, on a flat plane. Space is 3D, of course. You don't simply flank an enemy, you try to pierce or englobe his defences. At one point, artillery fire is described as "falling short". Really? To where? Maybe the shells are on time fuses set improperly, but they would hardly "fall short"!

This first book in the Nightfall Series by Andy Huang almost overwhelms the reader with characters, civilizations, and alliances from the very first pages. The action-packed sci-fi adventures also begin from page one and continue throughout the book. There are lots of neat sci-fi gadgets for the characters to use and experience as they struggle to decide what is right and wrong and where their true allegiance lies. This is a voluntary review of this book from BookFunnel Books.

FAST-PACED SCI-FI THRILLER

The author wastes no time diving right into an action-packed plot full of characters, interesting tech and dark secrets. The ideas are fresh and original, the characters multiple and distinct. I can’t say I’ve read another book like it and I look forward to reading the second novel.

From the Dark is the first book in the Nightfall series. This can be read as a standalone. There is violence. This book introduces a lot of characters and groups to keep track of. There is a technology that many use but most don't understand exactly how it works. While I did enjoy this book, it also was confusing at times. I'm not yet sure if I will read more of this series.

Great read, not very fast paced but it works prefect for this book as there is a lot of information to take in. A nice little package of sci fi.👍

Gerrard wanted to escape his father and his disappointing military career. But despite his desire, he ended up being possessed by an assassinated president’s personality through a cerebral implant and his starship was destroyed; all this within the first chapter of the book. A former starship fighter captain who can’t get the devastation reeked by a bombing run on another planet out of his mind, Gerrard dropped out of his military career and is flying a salvage ship.

The story action continues as intricacies develop and other characters are introduced. Once the characters were developed, the story bounces back and forth between their experiences and troubles. It wasn’t until the end of the book that the characters started coming together. While most of the characters ended up finding an appropriate destiny, one character, Inca, was sadly lost. Her consciousness ended up becoming part of the starship navigation matrix known as Whisper.

Summarizing a story in this way doesn’t do a book justice, as It doesn’t convey the word structure, the mystery, the thrills, nor the pace of a story. All of those are present in “From the Dark”. The author, Andy Huang, takes you along for space battles, political intrigue and spy craft with a sequel in the works. This is a book that satisfied my military science fiction love.
