“The truth costs nothing, but a lie can cost you everything…”
June 2007: a barbaric nail bomb is planted outside a London nightclub, a spy is found dead in his garden, and a blazing Jeep is driven into Glasgow airport. Three events bound by an earth-shattering connection that should have remained buried forever.
From the author of ‘The Theseus Paradox’, the smash-hit 7/7 thriller based on true events, comes the sequel about a real-life mystery that threatens to destroy a nation. Detective Inspector Jake Flannagan must uncover how a series of astonishing events are inextricably linked, before the past closes in on him.
We all have secrets we say we’ll never tell…
David Videcette is a former Scotland Yard investigator who has worked on a wealth of infamous cases, including the 7/7 London bombings. With twenty years’ policing experience, he is an expert on terrorism and organised crime.
"I can’t tell you the truth, but I can tell you another story…"
As an investigator David Videcette has chased numerous dangerous criminals and interviewed thousands of witnesses. He is a former Scotland Yard detective with expertise in the fields of counter-terror operations and organised crime.
David puts his policing knowledge to good use investigating cold cases in his true crime series, Investigations by David Videcette. He is also the author of the Detective Inspector Jake Flannagan thrillers.
When he is not writing, he consults on security operations for high-net-worth individuals and is a media commentator for broadcasters and newspapers around the world.
If I could give "The Detriment" six stars I would, I loved it more and beyond and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish! The first few pages instantly grab your attention with a police high speed race to attend a possible car/nail bomb about to explode outside a London nIghtclub. Meanwhile at a similar time a spy is found dead in his garden having fallen from his flat and a blazing Jeep is driven into a Glasgow Airport terminal. All events bound by a secret that should have remained buried forever. I loved the way the author - David Videcette - included real life events into the story, ones which I was fully aware of happening and therefore gave you the feeling of familiarity and instantly allowed you to form a connection with the story. It was also intriguing how there were a few side stories written into the main plot, which constantly kept you entertained and it was extremely clever how they all came together seamlessly in an exciting nail biting end. All the characters were just brilliant, I particularly liked the main protagonist Detective Inspector Jake Flannagan, I was quite taken with him, his relationship with his work partner Lenny was just perfect - the way Lenny looked out for Jake, trying to reign him in when his actions went into overdrive and I also liked Jake's boss Helen who was fair and professional. It really was quite an eye opener reading about the world of politics, government departments and terrorism - the secrets, lies, betrayals, bribes and bungs is truly frightening but also sadly very believable. I found how the author included many various facts throughout and the 'Appendix : Facts" at the end suitably informative, enabling anyone unaware of the largest arms deal ever done in history, to follow the timeline of events as they happened. David Videcette is an excellent and professional writer who pays attention to detail, is very talented and obviously has a wealth of intelligence, using his knowledge of twenty years policing and expertise in terrorism and organised crime and then mixing it with a tremendous imagination to create a fabulous and dangerous story which is both thrilling and compelling. "The Detriment" is the second in the series with "The Theseus Paradox" being the first, which I do own and shamefully admit to not reading yet. That is soon going to be rectified and I intend reading that as soon as possible. Some readers would say to read them in order but I slightly disagree, there's enough in the story to bring you up to date, so although probably entertaining to read first, it's certainly not imperative and without doubt can be enjoyed as a standalone novel. I can't recommend this fast paced, highly entertaining novel enough, truly worth a read and I fully intend to seek out the next in the series that's hopefully out soon.
A really great and exciting read. A perfect potpourri of humanity in all its fascinating diversity. The story centers around the recent bomb explosions in London and how it plays out in people lives and aspirations. Informative, relaxing, and gripping story.
The Author can not tell us the truth, but he can tell us a story ...
This is a fictionalised story of a very real police investigation in the UK where car bombs were placed outside a nightclub in London and a man set himself on fire at Glasgow Airport.
This is very fast paced and while I remember seeing this in the news back in 2007 I don't remember it particularly clearly therefore I found this novel very interesting.
I liked how the author put a section at the back of the book entitled FACTS, I learnt a lot from this.
All in all a decent read.
At time of posting this title is available on Kindle Unlimited.
After reading David's previous book, The Theseus Paradox, I was completely absorbed. What we have here is a high-quality crime drama, but including some amazing thrilling moments. This book for me was a lovely experience. Maybe something you would take away on holiday.
All of the above is tremendous, but the book gets better. David knows his knowledge, and at the end of the book, he documents every solid truth.
We will never know how much is the truth. I find this exciting!
Having read and loved The Theseus Paradox by David Videcette when it was released, I as thrilled to be able to read an early copy of The Detriment. David has written another cracking crime thriller, another book that is rooted in recent UK history.
We’re back with DI Jake Flannagan in The Detriment, where he is tied to a desk (not literally!!!) due to his actions on a previous case. (I should mention here, to get the full picture I recommend you read The Theseus Paradox so you know what the background is.) However, Jake doesn’t take being told what to do easily. Needless to say, he plants himself firmly in the middle of the action in this one.
A planted (unexploded) bomb outside a London nightclub, a jeep driven into Glasgow airport and a dead spy are all linked together, and its up to Jake to tease out the secrets that are holding these events together. Back with his buddy Lenny, Flannagan goes on a hunt for information, but what he uncovers has a huge impact on more than just those involved in the investigation.
Returning characters in The Detriment include Shirley, Jake’s therapist, who is trying to break down the emotional barriers that Jake has put up due to the traumatic events in the past. I really enjoyed how the reader got an insight into where Jake was in his head, even if he wouldn’t talk about it with anyone else. Claire is also back in The Detriment. I think she has such great scope as a character, even if she does lead Jake astray. But let’s face it, with him it’s not exactly difficult to make him bend the rules. Or snap them completely.
I don’t want to say much more, because I hate dissecting plots when the fun is in reading them and untangling them for the reader. David Videcette has done a great job in weaving crime fact into crime fiction, A thrilling page-turner with plenty of action, The Detriment will delight Terry Hayes and Lee Child fans. It is an excellent second installment in the series, and I cannot wait to see where Jake goes next.
Ever since I read The Theseus Paradox I’ve been eagerly anticipating the second book in the Detective Inspector Jake Flannagan series. Sometimes when I anticipate great things for a novel I can be left disappointed, but I’m thrilled to report if anything The Detriment takes this series to a whole new level, it’s the definition of a “thriller”,with terrorism, murder, secrets and corruption at the heart of the story this novel made for a fast paced, explosive read.
Detective Inspector Jake Flannagan now here’s a character who intrigues me, his peers consider him to be a loose cannon, a detective whose a liability and takes unnecessary risks, and his personal life is complicated to say the least, but as the author digs deeper into Jake’s behaviour you realise this is a man on the edge, whose seen and experienced terrible things and it’s only now his emotions are are beginning to surface which make him a very credible protagonist.
The Detriment opens with a car bomb outside a London night club and what follows makes for a very intense and satisfying read. I found myself reluctant to put this book down as I was eager to see how all the threads to this rivetting tale would piece together. There were so many elements of this tale that I enjoyed and amid it all there is controversy that will leave you questioning Jake’s decisions, he certainly doesn’t have an easy ride in this novel!
What I really love about David Videcette’s writing is the fact not only do his novels make for a very original and compelling read, but as The Detriment is based on real real life events mixed with fiction you can’t help but wonder how much of this novel is actual fiction , the whole tale is just far too chillingly credible. Would I recommend this book? I most certainly would, especially if you are looking for a thriller that’s highly original and jam packed with intrigue and suspense.
As there are references to the case that Jake worked on in the first book in the series, I would recommend reading The Theseus Paradox before reading The Detriment.
It was great catching back up with Jake. He is trying to turn his life around as he has been on a type of probation while he proves himself to the powers that be. He has stopped drinking and was good to see him not on self destruction mode. He still needs to sort himself out where women are concerned but this is obviously harder for him than stopping the drinking.
There is so much going on in this book and was quite a fast paced read. I was glad that I had an evening which was really peaceful and had no interruptions so that I could fully concentrate on the story.
I loved the different threads running in the story and was intrigued with all of it. We also get to see more of Jakes ex which I really liked. Even though Jake is a bit of a player and gets himself into some sticky situations at times, there is no doubt that he is a really caring guy. We especially get to see this with his ex.
If anything Jake reminded me of Bond in this book. I’m not sure if it’s because he had to keep answering to a female boss who obviously has his best interests to heart and he always seems to be in trouble, either way it really reminded me of Bonds relationship with M.
The Detriment is a fast paced and thrilling read. The author brings the whole story to life with mentions of real life events and had me gripped through out. Hope the author doesn’t keep us waiting to long for the third in the series!
My thanks to the author for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
The detriment by david videcette. Jake is back. “The truth costs nothing, but a lie can cost you everything…” June 2007: a barbaric nail bomb is planted outside a London nightclub, a spy is found dead in his garden, and a blazing Jeep is driven into Glasgow airport. Three events bound by an earth-shattering connection that should have remained buried forever. A very enjoyable read. Full of action and suspense. Loved it. Couldnt put it down. Can't wait for next part. 5*.
I finished this book yesterday and my head is still spinning. I loved the Theseus Paradox and loved The Detriment just the same. I read this in two days, that's how good it is. Terrorism, corruption, murder, it has it all.
The relationship between Jake and Lenny is brilliant, not only are they colleagues but are great friends too. Jake is still a little naughty but would we have him any other way? No we wouldn't. On a serious note the story is amazing, it draws you in from the beginning and keeps you on your toes until the end. I could easily read this book again, I enjoyed it that much. I can't recommend this book enough. Many thanks to the author for the ARC I'm very grateful.
'The Detriment' is David Videcette's second novel which, just like his first novel, is based on real life events. Trying to differentiate between the real facts and the authors fictional work, is incredibly difficult. In my eyes, that just proves how consistent and realistic the author's plot actually is.
Detective Inspector Jake Flannagan is a bit of a live wire. He has the knowledge, but he doesn't quite understand the correct processes to be able to use his knowledge in the right circumstance. Put it this way, if Flannagan has a hunch, Flannagan will walk to the end of the Earth to ensure that justice is prevailed. Not all of Flannagan's colleagues agree with his worth ethic, especially as it seems to ruffle a few feathers! After all, Jake Flannagan is a law unto themselves! Whilst reading 'The Detriment', I tried to see things from all different angles. I'm not inspector, granted, but I wanted to see if I could engage in the storyline in a completely different way by seeing each situation from all sides. Including Jake's. Whilst I could appreciate the frustration that was coming from Jake's team, I could also understand why he went about things in a certain way. Nobody could ever say that that man isn't passionate about his job. Ever.
As for the events that unfolded, my poor heart couldn't keep up with the sheer level of intensity! There were moments where I found myself so engrossed in certain parts of the investigation, my heart was close to pounding out of my chest. As readers, we are drip fed pieces of information at the same time the force are so it's like we are investigating the events with the team, which I absolutely loved! I felt quite important...sad to admit I know, but oh well! Having said that, seeing as I was so engrossed in the moment, I ended up teetering on the edge of the sofa shouting 'MOVE IT!!!' whilst I was reading the bomb information. Just like Jake Flannagan at that time, I had absolutely no idea what was going to happen. My instinct was to shout move...so I did. It didn't seem to matter that A) I wasn't actually IN the book, and B) nobody could hear me and it wouldn't have made the blindest bit of difference. Yet I still did it.
I'm not going to lie, I tried to decipher the truth from the fiction, but seeing as the author has written the entire plot with such tenacity, every single situation and event seemed real to me. I remember seeing certain things on the news when they happened, similar to certain events in this novel, yet when I sat reading about those horrific incidents in black and white, I kept thinking to myself 'did I see that on the news too?'.
In all honesty, I could have carried on reading 'The Detriment' long after it had finished. I hadn't prepared myself for the book to end, and in actual fact, I didn't want it to. I was involved, I was engrossed and I was in awe at the entire novel. Pardon the pun but it blew me away.
This book is severely intense. It's severely hair-raising. It's severely nail-biting. It's severely unbreakable. Ever since I finished reading 'The Detriment', I haven't found another book that matches up in the same way since. Yes, David Videcette's book has given me a chronic book hangover.
In my eyes, 'The Detriment' is unmissable. An outstanding portrayal of such devastating incidents, all written with enough power to make you sit up and listen.
Absolutely fantastic, my most favourite book of 2017 without a doubt.
Our favourite naughty DI is back, Jake Flannagan is a Detective Inspector in the Counter Terrorist Department based in Scotland Yard. He doesn’t always play by the rules, but he always gets the job done. 2 years on from 7/7 he is back investigating 2 car bombs, a dead spy and an attack at Glasgow airport.
The Detriment is the sequel to the fast paced thriller The Theseus Paradox and once again David Videcette grabs you by the throat and drags you along in a frighteningly, topical story about terrorism and extremists. With very short but gripping chapters, this is one of those “just one more chapter” books, and before you know it, you’ve finished it and your heart can stop racing and you can breathe again.
WARNING!!!! DO NOT attempt to read this book if you aren't prepared to put your life on hold for a while! Like the first Jake Flannagan book, The Theseus Paradox, this is one of those novels that makes you drop everything and worry about it later. I started it on Sunday evening and if I hadn't had to work all day Monday, I'd have finished it in one sitting. I kept telling myself "just one more chapter ...." which of course became another, and another, and another... now I've finished it, looked around me and I'm back in my real world with a bang, sad to say another farewell to Jake Flannagan, and hoping the wait to read book 3 doesn't take too long. I can't recommend this book enough - or The Theseus Paradox for that matter. There are so many elements that combine to make this un-putdownable. There's the main protagonist, Jake, who is so likable because he's just so human, so real. Somebody you wouldn't turn down a pint with at the local pub. There are others like Lenny, Jake's friend and colleague who tries to keep him out of trouble. And then there's the story itself which is fast-paced, gripping and, just like The Theseus Paradox, is based on true events. However, Videcette cleverly blends fact with fiction making you ask yourself just what is actually fact and what is fiction? The timeline on the true crime (at the end of the novel) dealt with in the story is almost as gripping as the novel itself. I loved loved this book. Now it's time to catch up on everything I should really have been doing instead of reading this - but not before awarding The Detriment a full five star rating before I do. Thanks for a great read, David Videcette :-)
Flippin’ heck! David Videcette is back with a vengeance! After having read and loved The Theseus Paradox, I knew it wouldn’t be long until I picked up this one. It was one of my most anticipated books and even though my expectations were sky high, I was not disappointed! David still can’t tell you the truth, but he can tell you a story and once again, it’s an absolute corker!
It’s June 2007 and a series of events are keeping law enforcement busy. A car with a nail bomb is found outside a nightclub, a spy is found dead in his garden and a Jeep is driven into Glasgow airport with one of the occupants setting himself on fire. Are these events in any connected and if so, how? Meanwhile, Claire, Jake Flannagan’s on/off girlfriend drags him into an investigation of her own.
After events from the previous book, which you should really read by the way if you don’t want to miss out on anything, Jake was suspended and has been sidelined in the office for the last six months. Eager to sink his teeth back into an investigation, he didn’t quite count on having to work with an old nemesis. Jake is still doing what he thinks is right, no matter the trouble it may land him in. But he’s also struggling and may finally admit to himself that he might possibly need some help.
David Videcette is quite the masterful storyteller. While this story is based on true events, I can never figure out where fact ends and fiction begins. And then I read the author’s notes and almost wish I hadn’t. Sometimes it’s better not to know.
The Detriment is action-packed from the very first page. There’s a lot going on and it’s one heck of a compelling, intense and thrilling ride! It left me utterly breathless, exhausted but oh so, satisfied. This is such an incredible series and it would make the most fantastic movie or TV series. (Richard Armitage would be perfect, by the way. Just saying’.)
With a flawed, yet highly likeable protagonist, various threads and a brilliantly executed and intelligent plot, this chilling thriller is a total must-read! I can’t wait to read the next Jake Flannigan book!
I loved David Videcette’s debut novel, The Theseus Paradox so when The Detriment was announced, I was extremely excited. I loved the character of Jake Flannagan and the way Mr Videcette wrote his story of the fictional investigation into the London bombings gave me proper food for thought.
This time out, Jake is looking at another real life event, the Glasgow Airport Bombing and the failed attempts in London which all took place at the end of June 2007.
“I can’t tell you the truth, but I can tell you a story…”
Yet again, Mr Videcette puts his own spin on real life investigations and throws into the mix Jake’s personal life and issues….Jake is really pushed with his day job and things he’s asked of by someone he loves! All after coming back from suspension…is this the end of the line for Jake as he puts his reputation and police career on the line.
Mr Videcette definitely knows how to write a fast paced crime thriller; I raced through The Detriment, out of breath chasing around London as he’s tries to solve multiple crimes! And yet again my perception of events is questioned! You devil you Videcette!! How much of this writing is true and how much is a story?!
I really can’t wait to see what is thrown at Jake! But I implore you Mr Videcette, don’t wait so long to give us book 3!!!
When I read this book and The Theseus Paradox I felt a real genuine connection with the stories although they are written as part fact and part fiction. David Videcette as the author blends them in such a way that you would be hard pressed to know where one ends and the other begins, it is totally seamless. I am sure that these events will forever be in readers minds, but this takes the you into the behind the scenes stuff, an inside look at the people who protect us from so many more horrors that don’t ever hit News Headlines. The physical and mental cost to these men and women is huge. I just couldn’t help but take to Jake Flannagan in the first book, one of the good guys that has to, put it bluntly, a bit of a mixed up head due the job he does. Seen too much, done too much and been caught up in red tape too much, not to mention the booze and continual string of woman left behind as debris. The toll on his personal life was tragic to say the least but work for him is addictive. He bestie Lenny on the other hand, has his head screwed on a little better and even has a working relationship with his other half. Together Jake and Lenny are the perfect match, bouncing off each other with one liners and constant digs. I am not even going to try to explain anything about the story which comprises of three main events and their random connection as it is far too complicated and would give far too much away. What you get in this book is as darn close to what it is really like to work at this level day in day out told by David Videcette, whom was himself was a former Scotland Yard Investigator with the Metropolitan Police for a number of years that cover both the periods of time that these books are set in. This is as close to the truth that you will get and it will horrify you, mesmerise you and at times break your heart. When you finish the story do please continue to read on about factual accounts surrounding this book, the real life events that were the building bricks for the author. Love these facts that I read with too many sliding right into the story. Another outstanding read and sad to say that with the tragic events that have occurred in real life already there will be more to share, which I guiltily look forward to as a third book.
A well written fast paced thriller which makes for compelling reading.Truth or fiction, very hard to decipher. I also appreciated the factual glossary at the end of the book. Now to read the Theseus Paradox which has shot right to the top of my list. A well deserved 5*
Eeeeeek! When I was offered an ARC of The Detriment, I jumped at the chance as The Theseus Paradox is high up the list of my favourite reads. You can read my review on my blog, www.crimebookjunkie.co.uk. I was thrilled to hear that the enigma that is Jake Flannagan was back to tell another story and once again, the author did not disappoint.
Set in London, the reader is faced with acts of terrorism/extremism; PTSD; shocking revelations; fear; secrets; guilt and facing the past while fearing failure. Emotions run high in this sequel to The Theseus Paradox and readers had better buckle up as David Videcette holds nothing back!
The story moves along fairly quickly, weaving various threads throughout. I didn’t find this book to be as fast-paced as The Theseus Paradox and rightly so, as the complexity of the plot meant that it had to be told in a particular way so the reader could eventually see how everything linked together without getting confused. However, don’t be fooled into thinking you will not be racing through the pages…because you will…and you’ll LOVE it!
I was pleasantly surprised to see that this book spent a good amount of time working on the character development. We learn some things in The Theseus Paradox, but The Detriment delves further and really gives the reader what they want to know about how the characters came to be who they are! DI Jake Flannagan ….*swoon* …yes…another #FictionalCrush of mine! What can I say – I fall for damaged but interesting characters! We see a whole different side to Jake in my opinion and it is one that I welcomed with open arms! As ever, Jake is not one to follow policy to the letter and it makes you wonder whether he is a hero, or just plain dangerous. Either way…I’ll take him! I am not going to give any spoilers away, but I will say that it was good to finally find out why Jake behaves the way he does – it brought out a realism and human side to him that perhaps wasn’t so obvious before. Hurrah!
DI Mark Castle – arrgghhh….THIS guy infuriated me! The conflict and tension between Castle and Flannagan was so thick, I had to wade through it everytime I turned the page! Brilliantly written but I kind of felt like there was more that just remained “unsaid”
OMFG – Claire! She is back – for those of you who read The Theseus Paradox, Claire and Jake are in an off/on relationship – that’s no spoiler…any woman Jake meets can be classed this way! We learn ALOT about Claire in this book and I wasn’t sure what to make of her. She can be just as reckless as Jake and I often wondered whether they were good together or a disaster waiting to happen. I really have a lot of OMFG’s I want to throw out there…but I won’t… the book says it all! But OMFG!!
Lenny was a character I loved – so loyal to Jake and constantly in protective mode, this pair of police officer’s just bounce off each other brilliantly! Lenny is desperate to keep Jake out of self-destruct-mode and his detrmination is heart-warming. The banter they share had me laughing throughout – they really were like “Sherlock & Watson” – but don’t call Lenny “Watson”!
There were many more characters to keep the reader hooked, but I only touched on a few who really made an impact on me. This book was full of action, twists and a riveting story-line that really will make you scream at times. The only thing I would say is that everything sort of tied itself up quickly and I got slightly lost in trying to connect the final pieces of the puzzle together…but that’s just my experience.
Would I recommend this read? Hell Yeah I would. It is easily read as a stand-alone, but I loved the first book so much, I think the reader would be letting themselves down if they didn’t read The Theseus Paradox first! I can’t wait to see what happens to DI Jake Flannagan next!
Jake Flannagan was easily one of my favourite characters I came across earlier this year and the Thesaurus Paradox easily one of my books of 2017...going into this therefore I had high hopes yet a trepidation that it might just not be as good...I didn't need to fear it was every bit as good. Jake is one of those characters that frustrates me yet I know that if I worked with him I would be there giving him a hand in his bending of the rules and there was a really special part of this book where we got an insight into him and his reasons for him doing what he does that made me love him just that little bit more (Yes that was possible!) as for the story itself it was fast paced, intriguing and unpredictable- all that you can ask for in a story! cannot wait for book 3!
A slightly different premise to the first and all the better for it. I have to admit to a slight tingle when I read the tagline...I can’t tell you the truth but... I have read both books and loved them. Jake is a very likeable character and I am glad he’s getting some help to slay his demons. I feel real frustration with him, when he refuses to rely on others to see him through challenging times, but I suppose that is what makes him who he is. Would more than happily read another in this series.
Jake flannigan is back in this fast paced action packed hard hitting story…...Which was certainly worth the wait.
After reading David's debut novel The Theseus Paradox and loving it. Can you imagine my excitement when I was offered an advanced reader's copy of this beauty. And David certainly didn't disappoint thats for sure the story starts off with one explosive start. And that was it I couldn't put it down my kindle was with me every step of the day. This series just gets better and better David is a natural at writing and using his experience has a former Scotland Yard investigator with the Metropolitan Police is clearly shown throughout the story. Which leaves the reader always wondering if it is the truth or fiction.
Following on from The Theseus Paradox we catch up with Jake in a London nightclub where a bomb has been planted outside,a spy is found dead in his garden, and a blazing Jeep is driven into Glasgow airport. Three events bound by an earth-shattering connection that should have remained buried forever…...Holy Smoke what a rollercoaster of a ride the author takes us on. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
Yes I have a character crush on Jake and he is naughtier than ever in this story. I love it that he doesn't always play it by the book and we get to know a lot more about Jake in this story with plenty of character background woven into this explosive story. Jake would certainly give James Bond a run for his money when it comes to the ladies. Yes he is a Jack the lad, but we do see a different side of him when his ex Claire is involved.
I love his relationship with Lenny they make and good team and he certainly makes me laugh. The banter they have is a real friendship.
This book is packed full of terrorism which might offend some readers. But for me It is certainly an entertaining nail biting read which ticked all the boxes for me giving it a well deserved 5 stars.
Thank you to the author for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
Jake is back! He has calmed down a little bit in some respects but he still treats women pretty badly, seems clueless as to what they actually need from him and is still married to the job.
As with the first book in the series, the author clearly knows his stuff when it comes to police procedures and terrorism. He has also done a great deal of research into the politics of "who does what for whom" when it comes to supplying weapons to other countries, the price that Western countries pay for oil (both literally and figuratively) and the ethics of it all.
There are also some distressing secrets which are revealed in this book and a shocking twist I didn't see coming at all.
All in all, it didn't have the same frantic pace as the first book and there were some threads left undone which I hope will be tied up in the next book. I found the Appendix absolutely fascinating reading, and more than a little bit disturbing too!
Kudos to the author for this book, looking forward to reading the next one :)
Gripping, intense, crime thriller This is a crime thriller that seamlessly integrates real events with fiction, and it's the second in the Jake Flannagan series. I haven't read the first one but I didn't feel left behind with this story, which stands well on its own. The book opens with a bang and the pace keeps escalating all the way through the book. There is a lot going on for maverick DI Jake to deal with including terrorism and corruption at the top of the pile. A complex story unfolds but the author does an excellent job keeping it from getting bogged down, although it does exercise the brain cells. In addition to Jake, there are some memorable characters and all the characters are well drawn and believable in their situations. All of scenes bear a strong credibility coming from the previous experience of the author working for the Met. Add vivid descriptions and the book comes alive with gripping intensity. Highly recommended.
What a bloody fantastic book!! Jake Flanagan is back with a vengeance. Love how you never know what is true and what is fiction, makes your mind go into complete overdrive. Another great book from David Videcette, can't wait for the next one.
Jake Flannagan is back at work, but he’s still not entirely ready to play by the rules.
I really enjoyed The Detriment, finding it intelligently written, intriguing and interesting. There is no need to have read the first book in the series, Theseus Paradox (although I would recommend it) because The Detriment works really well as a stand alone and I was hooked from the very first page. The book starts at a cracking pace and doesn’t let up from the first page to the last.
David Videcette has quite an urbane style of writing. I really liked the sense of immediacy from the date, time and place information at the start of each chapter and the way in which some information is slightly withheld so that the reader experiences the discoveries in the same way as the characters. I kept thinking I’d just read one more chapter to see what happened next and before I knew it, a whole day had disappeared. I really couldn’t put down The Detriment. The level of detail was pitch perfect; enough to give a real sense of atmosphere so that the story came alive without extraneous padding, creating a heart-thumpingly good read.
The book is a truly disturbing insight into the murky underworld of the police and the powers that be so that I was left wondering just which side of the law is the right side at times. As The Detriment is brilliantly based around real events it is impossible to know what is fact and what is fiction and I found this aspect very intriguing and thought-provoking. I was completely absorbed in the events.
There’s a cracking pace to the plot so that I can really visualise The Detriment as a film or television series. In fact, it felt more like I was watching events than reading about them, so realistic was the writing.
I found the factual and source detail at the end of the book particularly fascinating and not a little disturbing. Reading The Detriment has left me feeling naive, previously duped and newly informed as well as hugely entertained. The Detriment is a brilliant book and I can’t wait for the next book in the series. https://lindasbookbag.com/2017/07/01/...
Jake is faced with a number of crimes which don’t appear to be connected. He recklessly attempts to disarm a car bomb (which fails to detonate anyway). A spy is found in his own garden and it’s assumed he leapt from his window in the block of flats. Jake’s old girlfriend enlists his help in something suspicious. There’s a lot going on in this novel and all of it illegal, nasty and involving high-level corruption.
David Videcette knows how to crank up the tension. His protagonist, Jake, is often out on a limb but can’t let bad things happen. I was torn so many ways in this story, wanting bad people not to get away with it though I feared some of them would. Everything isn’t always black and white and Jake has to deal with the shades of grey and choose between the lesser of the evils. This is a very through-provoking book and the section at the end, taken from real documents, is a bit of a shocker. Really, this is a book not to miss.
Thanks TBC - i wanted to leave a review for this fab book. This is my first read by David Videcette - I heard such great things about his first book and was very keen to read this! I was not in the slight bit disappointed. Fast paced, highly charged and a brilliant read. Even if you have not read the first book, you will not have a problem reading this - the characters are likeable and easy to relate to. Jake is the main character - we find him outside a London nightclub where a nail bomb has gone off. Followed shortly by a further incident in Glasgow. Jake is reporting to Mark Castle - a pair that don't seem to like each other very much. ,but why?? To top it all his girlfriend claire is wanting his help and he is getting into alsorts of problems he didn't want or need to be involved in. I also love the relationship between him and Lenny his colleague. I really don't want to give anything away but highly reccomend you read this one ASAP! It won't be my last that's for sure. I just need to read the first book now!
I absolutely loved David's first book The Theseus Paradox and was chuffed to bits this one would also feature our new favourite bad boy DI Jake Flannagan. Two years on from 7/7 There's a new terrorist threat, is it linked to 7/7 or are there some new parasites on the scene? Jake desperately wants to be involved, wants to be the first on scene but most of all he wants to save people. When Jake receives a phone call from ex girlfriend Claire who needs help with some thing from her past things start to become very personal. As stories cross paths things start knitting together but how much more trauma can Jake deal with. David Videcette has a wonderful writing style, it comes from not only experience but very obviously his heart.
Oh my! Book number two in the DI Jake Flanagan series does not disappoint. These books are not your run of the mill detective books, they are hard hitting and gritty. In this book, Jake is trying to hold onto his job and sanity but forces within his circle are trying to prevent this. A real page turner with a few twists that even he didn't see coming. Can't wait for the next instalment.
'I can’t tell you the truth, but I can tell you another story…’ so says counter terrorism detective turned writer, David Videcette, and this book, just like the first in the series, The Theseus Paradox, really left this reader wondering what was fact and what was fiction! The Detriment is the second book featuring maverick detective, Jake Flanagan, and weaves together several incidents from June 2007: a barbaric nail bomb is planted outside a London nightclub, a spy is found dead in his garden, and a blazing Jeep is driven into Glasgow airport. In his ususal individual style, Jake, still not playing by any rules but his own, tries to piece together what has happened, trusting his own instincts and as usual upsetting a few people along the way! We also see more of his relationships with his boss, Helen, and girlfriend, Claire. This is another well written dramatic fast paced thriller. I found it difficult to put down until all had been resolved! Thanks to TBC and David for a review copy of this great read!
