Sooooo ..... after being locked out of my Kindle app I've decided to have a bit of a clean up in my various "Books Read" lists. First cabs off the rank are my DNF pile. If I DNF'd it and have absolutely NO intention of reading it again, I'm changing my rating to 1 🌟 and deleting it off my Kindle. Life is too short at my age for crappy books!!

Original Review:

I feel awful about this, but I hit 42% and just couldn't read anymore. I LOVE K.J. Emrick's Darcy Sweet mystery series and I suppose I went into this short read expecting that same quality ...... and came away sorely disappointed. The book was fairly well written and the main character was beginning to build interest but the flow of the piece felt stilted and that the author/s were "trying too hard". And don't even get me started on the detective - he was abysmal!
I won't write the series off though .... maybe future books will improve ... I hope.

This was a fun, light cozy. If you need a quick read that's entertaining with a little mystery on the side, this is a good choice.

A Friend In Death (A Moonlight Bay Psychic Mystery) by K.J. Emrick and Kathryn De Winter, South Coast Publishing, 78 pages, June 4th 2017, Genre: Short Reads, Cozy Mystery. Warning: May Contain Spoilers.

Review by Leigh Holland.

A Friend In Death: A Short Read is a cozy mystery, the first in a six book series known as the Moonlight Bay Psychic Mystery series. I love the fact I can get through one of these over lunch. Couple that with my penchant for cozy mysteries and it’s a win-win for me. At the end of the kindle version, there’s an offer to sign up to the subscribe list for each author to receive one free book from each of them- a two book total that sweetens the deal for cozy lovers.
Miranda Wylder is a crime novelist and secret psychic living in Melbourne, Australia. She’s the popular author of “The Mob’s Calling” and the upcoming “Dance With The Devil”. She experiences strange, unbidden visions and can speak with the dead, two traits that she keeps hidden for fear others won’t understand. She has a vision of a man in the backyard, in a fetal position, dead. Disturbed, she feels the man is familiar, but can’t place him. Miranda makes a mean rack of lamb, loves watering her garden, misses her hometown of Moonlight Bay, and is a devoted friend to Kyle.
Kyle is a food reviewer at The Metropolitan Post newspaper. As a critic, he has his fair share of enemies. He’s broken up with his boyfriend Markus and recently received hate emails over a review he gave at a restaurant, The Coffee Ambience. Miranda comforts Kyle. She heads out to do a book signing at The Coffee Ambience. Towards the end of the book signing, police approach her and take her downtown for questioning. Her best friend Kyle has been found in her backyard, like the man in her disturbing vision. Miranda has no time to mourn her loss, for Kyle returns to aid her in solving the crime. Can Miranda convince the detective of her innocence and psychic abilities? Can she and Kyle solve the crime?
A short and entertaining read, I lapped up A Friend In Death and was anxious for more. Luckily, the entire series is available, both individually and as a set. I’d recommend this to anyone who enjoys cozy mysteries.

A good story. The only thing I don't like about these short stories is everything happens so fast and you don't get the build up that you normally get when a murderer is sought. There were 2 murders in 1 day and it was all wrapped up by the evening. I would love to see this in a long book, more in depth, but I did enjoy it and look forward to the others in this series

Miranda Wylder is a psychic and an author. While watering her plants in her yard she sees a vision of a dead body. Something about it was familiar, but she can't quite figure it out. Her friend Kyle comes over for dinner. Kyle is a food critic for the local newspaper. He also informs her that he and his boyfriend have split up. The next day Miranda has a book signing at The Coffee Ambience Cafe. This is the place that Kyle gave a bad review, on the service and ambience, not so much the food. Miranda asks him to go to her house and get the bookmarks she forgot. Later the police come and ask her about the dead guy in her back yard. It's Kyle! At first the police thinks Miranda is the guilty party, but the more they look into things with Miranda's help...against their wishes, they find they have many possible suspects. Kyle comes back to help Miranda in the form of a ghost. Can they find the guilty person and why? What about Kyle? Will he leave Miranda when everything is settled? Read the book to find out. I enjoyed this quirky story very much.

Nice short read

A new series by this author, which I thoroughly enjoyed. It is a very short, quick read, so the character building is somewhat limited. However it was sufficient for me to understand the plot and get a partial feel for the characters. So if you don't like short stories beware.

I had just a brief issue between chapters 1 and 2, trying to figure out how she got from the end of chapter 1 to the start of chapter 2. The transition seemed like a huge leap to me, which might have been helped by a sentence or two at the start of chapter 2. Because of that I gave it 4 stars. Overall it was a good, entertaining read.

Some issues with the copy of the book I received

A bit uneven in places, which was not improved by there being a lot of problems with things like duplicate or missing sentences in the first chapter. There seemed to be a full page or more missing immediately following page one, and multiple instances of sentences cutting off on one page and repeating in full or in part on the next. That seemed to be just in the first chapter and I didn't notice any more of those issues after that. I liked the story, and I will be interested in reading more by this author in the future.

Nothing personal

Good read but it somehow didn't quite live up to "wow". Being psychic is just a fact of life for her until her last vision results in the death of her closest friend. Who would have done it? Why? Why did her house get trashed? Ghosts and mob connections are interwoven in this short read for a solid read. My one criticism is "what did she do with her personal belongings when she drove of into the sunset?"

This is a short, light read about a psychic true crime writer whose friend winds up dead in her backyard. There is no suspense and although the tone is playful it is neither funny nor especially interesting. The characters lack depth and it is all rather silly. It's okay as a time killer or waiting room filler but I wouldn't go out of my way to read it.

Short But Sweet

I liked this book, although it was very short. I liked that it set the scene for Miranda and her friend, the ghost. Deciding to move from Melbourne to Moonlight Bay this was a prequel that entertained as well as informed.

Death doesn't change sarcasm.

A couple of interesting things. First being, this book is based in Australia. Second, it is quite nicely written. A wonderful start to a pleasant series.

A Great Short Story

If you want a quick and entertaining story this is for you. What I really liked was that it really told a story from beginning to end. Yes, I said to the END! No cliff hanger here. And I liked it so well that I have already bought the next story.

Cute but predictable

It is a short book or long story. Writing was good but it fell into place too quickly and too simply. I will try another as it was light and decent reading.

Pleasantly good for a short story. Plot ran really well, but I must admit I miss the build up that longer novels provide. I will most probably purchase the other books in the series.

Super short murder mystery with the twist that the protagonist can see ghosts (that certainly helps solve whodunit).

A Friend in Death .....

Another great book by K.J. Emrick and Kathryn De Winter. It's a quick read and I was hooked from the very begining. The characters were very believable. It had me guessing until the very end. So if you like a good wholesome mystery then you will enjoy this book.
