GENERAL THOUGHTS OF THE SERIES So I generally don't take time to review a great deal of children's / early reader books, but I actually purchased several of this series of books to give out as a favor at my son's birthday party as well as a complete set for him to keep. The books were purchased about a year ago, and it was only recently that books from this series became his night-time book of preference. The stories are short, easy enough to read that we can trade off on pages, and entertaining enough that we actually care about what is going to happen next!!!
RECOMMENDED AGE GROUP I would recommend these texts for young readers as well as older students seeking high interest / low lexile reads as the vocabulary / lexile level is somewhere in that 2nd grade range, but the subject matter would still be interesting and non-embarrassing for older students who struggle with more difficult texts.
GENERAL OVERVIEW OF THE TEXT This story follows Superman as he is out for the night and finds himself flying through Gotham back to Metropolis. While enjoying the calm night, he suddenly hears a crashing noise only to discover that his friend, Batman, seems to be destroying the city. Superman lands and attempts to speak with him, only to be attacked with more force than Batman should be capable of using. After hitting Superman with a solid punch that sends him flying, Batman flees. Teaming up with the Flash, Superman seeks his friend so that he can either talk him down or stop him...and...sorry no spoilers here :-).
PERSONAL REACTION TO THE TEXT This story is just adorable. The artwork is pretty solid for a children's book, the story is fun and engaging while not being overly complicated for its target audience. The characterization of Superman and Batman as well as the featured villain are pretty spot on, so a very worthy introduction to the characters for the little people. The Flash is a bit underutilized and seems to just be tacked on so that there was someone for Superman to tell that Batman wasn't acting like himself, which unfortunately stinks of lazy writing in an otherwise wonderful read. My son and I love the Flash, but could have done without him altogether in this text. Overall, though a mighty thumbs up!!
Brief description: Join Superman as he fights crime with his friends Batman and the Flash in this exciting easy reader series.
Identify at least 2 characteristics of this genre and subgenre and discuss how they appear in your book: 1) Easy readers are designed to help students transition from being listeners to becoming readers. Beginning readers are supported in this book with short chapters and glossary in the back for more challenging words. 2) Easy readers should attract the attention of students. Students, especially boys, will enjoy being able to read an entire book about superheroes themselves.
In what ways and how well does the book as a whole serve its intended audience? The content and bold colors and illustrations in this book are sure to hook struggling or reluctant readers. This easy reader provides a good stepping stone to reading graphic novels.
Battle of the Super Heroes! is part of the The Amazing Adventures of Superman! series is a book I selected in an attempt to find a book with 3 chapters for bingo that would hold Christopher's interest. We started a lot of chapter books this summer that he never wanted to pick up again.
I did have to push him to read this book 3 nights in a row, but he didn't really resist as much as with a lot of other books. And once he started reading, he seemed pretty interested. In this story Superman appears to be battling Batman, but it turns out to be the bad guy in disguise. The chapters build in length, but all were under 10 pages. This was a good level 2 chapter book.
An easy reader for superhero fans! Nice big words with sound effects done in comic style letters. Superman flies over Gotham City and teams up with Batman and The Flash to duke it out with shapeshifting Clayface. Has a message of friendship. Fun! This is a new illustrator to DC, his characters aren't perfect but pretty good.
The stories are scant, but the packaging is attractive and this series will satisfy those beginning readers who love superheroes but are not yet equipped to handle graphic novel versions of the tales. I expect these titles to be very popular with my Kindergarten-2nd set.
I have previously mentioned this is a fun series for early chapter book readers. This one has a great message of teamwork as well. It is always nice when a beginning reader not only has a story and fun picture, but a moral as well.
Not marketed as a reader book but read much more like one than an early chapter books. Great action makes for a quick fun read with 3 of their favorite superheroes ( Batman, Superman and Flash).
