Bound Gods #5

Crocuta Crocuta

Rate this book
For a god, what could be closer to heaven than living in a safe haven like Sanctuary, with an endless supply of ambrosia, delivered by the beautiful bodies of the Doxies in Alton’s harem?

But unlike the majority of the gods in Sanctuary who are less than human, Cerberus isn’t exotic or fantastical. His appearance, his…habits…have become the horror stories whispered on the lips of Doxies.

And while Cerberus might be immortal, his pride is not indestructible. Seeing the love of a Doxie for a monster like the Chimera, shatters it.

A chance encounter with an undocumented Doxie named Owen begins to transform Cerberus’s life. At least until Alton removes Owen from Cerberus’s care, banning the god from training the boy—to protect him from Cerberus’s animal nature.

In reality, Alton's motives are far more frightening. And the truth could kill Cerberus and Owen both.

I currently share my house with a myriad of dogs, a few cats, a saltwater aquarium filled with coral and fish, as well as my partner who's great at giving hugs when the day's been rough.
And of course, my editor and PA, who helps me keep life reasonably organized. At least so I won't walk out the door without wearing pants.

My envelope may have burst.

You know how people say such and such isn't their kink? Well, beastiality isn't my kink. If it's shifters and there's a partial shift during the boom boom times I can deal, but Cerberus is half hyena, like, all the time.

But before I go there let me say that both Cerberus and Owen are sympathetic characters. Cerberus is a god but his appearance is the stuff of nightmares and both gods and doxies fear him, something he's not immune to. He goes to a brothel to slake his needs and encounters Owen being kicked out for being a heroin addict. Owen is one bad hit/one bad john away from being in a pine box six feet under. I felt for both of them and regardless of my reservations I'm happy they found each other.

It turns out unclaimed doxies have a tendency to become opioid addicts to numb the emptiness and they usually fall into sex work because of their basic makeup. One or the other typically kills them and Alton has been working on a means of eliminating this. The means by which he's attempting to rectify this situation gets very sciencey and my brain started flashing, RED ALERT, RED ALERT!!! Science talk happening! ABORT! Capacity to melt cerebral cortex eminent, STAND DOWN! Obviously this is a "me" problem. Kinda like it was "me" problem when I registered for astronomy in college thinking I'd get to look at the stars and whatnot. SPOILER ALERT: that ain't what astronomy is.

Anyhoozle, I won't spoil what the outcome of Alton's tinkering was, but let's just say he miscalculated.

There were things that were brought up from previous books that loosely tie into this world, but I think this could potentially be read as a standalone. Some things I assumed from prior books would not be possible for anyone other than Leo, things that would kill a lesser god, seem to happen here which gave me pause. However, I know for all intents and purposes, I'm not supposed to think too hard where this series is concerned. Because it's essentially bad wrong porn erotica.

So, let's talk about the sex. There are two ways to get a doxie to produce ambrosia-pain and fear. I am a card carrying member of #TeamPain but Cerberus is #TeamFear, so not a lot of kink happening between them other than one force play scene. I tried to buck up like a trooper and go with the raw, messy, animalistic boom boom scenes. But then there would be some mention along the lines of the sheath covering Cerberus' monster cock looking like a pelt and...

Or his teeth touching around Owen's cock.

Or his cock being at such a sharp angle because of the cartilage...

I kept going though! I kept building that bridge and trying to push it out of my mind, so I feel like that speaks to my level of devotion to this series. I did give handy points to Cerberus' ability to produce his own lube. #SuperHandy Thankfully the other doxies are super sweet and still as horned up as ever. They really are like puppies. How can you not love 'em?

So, even though I wasn't convinced of their emotional connection, I'm still invested in this series and VERY excited about getting to know some of the other gods and new characters that were introduced in Crocuta Crocuta.

Recommend to... bad wrong porn erotica fans?

Review originally posted at Sinfully.

In this installment we leave Leo, Kaleb and Aaron and follow Cerberus, who we’ve gotten glimpses of in the previous books. As we found out in the last book, Cerberus’ father was a hyena and his mother human. Cerberus is a combination of both. His outward appearance includes a hunched body with mottled skin, thick fur-like hair on his body, and sharp teeth. It is enough to strike fear or revulsion in anyone who gets a glimpse. The doxies who have served him spread word of his brutality. Inside, however, there is plenty of that human nature. Cerberus has taken to avoiding being with the doxies that don’t want him, paying for sex in dark rooms. The rejection and whispers he’s dealt with for over a century hurt and he doesn’t want to force himself on those who don’t want him. He can’t help his nature, the loss of control and the rough sex that leaves a doxie battered, his human and hyena sides are both inextricably a part of him.

Owen was sold at 13 and has been working as a prostitute since. He is 26 now, he thinks, a junkie, feeling used up, lost and about to be kicked out of the brothel he’s called home. He is unaware that he is a doxie. Cerberus is there and buys him, tries to get him clean and explains to Owen just what he is. Any disgust at his initial take on Cerberus is lost once Owen realizes Cerberus can take away that emptiness he has always felt. There is a strange attraction that Owen can’t deny. When Owen is awakened after ingesting ambrosia that Alton has provided, his need to be near Cerberus becomes urgent. Even being separated for the briefest time has Owen climbing the walls. The sex is beyond rough, it’s brutal. Owen is desired by the man, hunted by the hyena, and mated by a combination of both that leaves him bleeding, almost broken – nothing the ambrosia won’t heal, but the nature of the beast causes harm to a doxie and Alton won’t accept the harm when it comes from Cerberus. His care for Owen in the aftermath leaves no question that his humanity will always win out where Owen is concerned.

When there is no option but to return to Sanctuary, things begin to fall apart. Alton is keeping secrets, something even bigger than a war is coming and Cerberus’ desire to do what he thinks is right for Owen causes all sorts of problems. Breaking Owen’s heart is only the start of events that Cerberus and Owen might never recover from.

Even though this book focuses on another god, I wouldn’t recommend reading this story without the background of the prior books. It is very different from them, as Cerberus is very different from Leo. Cerberus is a big old softie inside. He would do anything for Owen, or so he thinks. It turns out the one thing Owen needed was for Cerberus to fight for him. The heartbreak when they are separated is palpable. Adrienne Wilder never lets the reader forget about Cerberus’ animal nature, but he also broadcasts Cerberus’ humanity loud and clear. There is no way you won’t fall for this guy. Owen was a little less well-drawn, but then again, his past is very cut and dried. A throwaway and a whore for thirteen years, no family, no prospects and a readiness to end it all. It took a bit of time to warm up to him, but his need for and acceptance of Cerberus won me over. I also adored the three new doxies who took Owen under their care to teach him about his true nature.

The larger arc of the series is also addressed here. There is a new god introduced whose appearance heralds a new cataclysmic event coming that could wreak all sorts of havoc on the world. There is discussion of the fate of Pandora, who was sent away in the last book, and I am so hoping that we get that story very soon. Alton also reveals more of what he is up to in re-engineering the ambrosia plant that is key to survival for both the gods and doxies. I like the intricacies of what is building and am eagerly, waiting to see what comes next.

While not everything that was left hanging in the fourth book is addressed here, it only has me anxiously awaiting the next. I definitely recommend it to anyone who likes to immerse themselves in a different world and who isn’t scared off by sex that otherwise might be bordering on non-con or abuse. It appears that Cerberus’ and Owen’s story completed its arc here, but I do hope to see more of them, especially after the abrupt ending. This is a series that builds on each book, with a complex story underlying the god/doxie love stories and I’m hooked.

I know Cerberus deserved to have his story told, and of course it was absolutely beautifully written, but he's truly one of my less favorite characters.

I hate Alton more with each book... right?

This is book five in Adrienne Wilder’s Bound Gods Series. Though this one steps away from the MC’s of books 1-4, it’s not a standalone. Cerberus is a God we have followed as a secondary in the last books. We are following a path and a story. All of these are important and must be read in order.

I welcomed Cerberus’s story. I was always curious and intrigued with the half man half hyena. He’s admittedly unattractive. Anyone who meets him will agree he’s hideous. He’s rough, and more beast than man. But he feels and he yearns for a doxie of his own and not one forced to serve him; one who wants him.

One night when Cerberus goes out to buy a prostitute he meets Owen. He saves Owen. He wants Owen. Here’s why Adrienne is a wonderful writer. Owen fears Cerberus and thinks he’s disgusting and terrifying. I thought he’d look at Cerberus and be all, “I see the man, the beautiful man, I’m not like everyone else…” But no. He runs. He does find him unpleasant. This is interesting because we know, as the reader, that he must be truly hideous yet you know he’s going to have love. Maybe not right away but it will happen. And this is why Owen is such an awesome character. He craves Cerberus. Partly for ambrosia but their journey is animalistic, pure, raw, and full of flaws. Neither is perfect. Both are ugly in their own way and see passed all of that.

Like the other books, it is dark erotica. There’s Gods, Monsters, and what you may see as non-con/ dub-con. But since we follow this world for five books we understand how things work. You will be confused if you start with this book.

Wonderful addition! Highly recommend this series.

Enjoyed this one but perhaps not as much as Leo & Kalebs story. While I liked Cerebus & Owen it didn't quite have the same level of chemistry for me. Alton and all his DNA messing around really annoyed me and I found him quite frustrating in this book ! Zen was great and I'm hoping he gets his own book with Sonny - this also might bring Leo & Kaleb back, who were sorely missed in this story. I've enjoyed this series and won't hesitate to keep buying these books ... looking forward to more 😊

When I first saw the cover for Crocuta Crocuta my initial impression was yikes! I was not a fan. However, I am a big fan of Adrienne Wilder's Bound Gods series and there is no way I was passing up a book over a cover. I hadn't even read the blurb yet, I had no clue what it was going to be about. All I knew was I had to have it. Now that I finished, I have to say I was wrong. The cover is PERFECT!

We met Cerberus in previous books and honestly didn't think much of him. I was more interested in Zen, Alton, Pan. Little did I know how much more interesting he would be. A god created by his mother human and hyena father, we learn his history. His appearance makes him stand out like an ugly sore thumb especially to the Doxies. He may be scary to look at but deep inside he's a sensitive soul. The only way he gets to satisfy his needs with Doxies that don’t want him is if Zen is involved. Instead of facing that rejection he has taken to paying for sex. Let's just face it, his story will tear your heart out.

And while your heart is bleeding meet Owen. Sold at 13, working as a prostitute, now at 26, he's a junkie about to lose everything. When Cerberus see Owen, he knows what he is. An undocumented Doxie. Cerberus buys him, takes him to a clinic to help him clean up, tells him he will help him when he gets out. When Owen asks him why all Cerberus will say is because he has to, then he goes back to his hotel, alone. Days later Owen shows up at his hotel, where Cerberus tells him the truth of what he is, what Owen is, and what he wants from him.

As much as I enjoyed the previous books, this one is the one that had my heart racing...with emotion. Watching both Cerberus and Owen struggle, to find someone that will accept them despite all that they have against them. It's quite the journey they take from brothel to cave and finally to Sanctuary. So many interesting characters, meeting new Doxies, getting reacquainted with the gods. Alton, the things you do, bad boy! From beginning to end, Crocuta Crocuta held me in its grasp, ran my emotions ragged and even though the ending was a bit abrupt, I still felt it was perfect.

As much as you can read Crocuta Crocuta as a standalone, I think to get the full effect of the gods, Doxies and everything in-between you really need to start with book one. How else would you understand the storyline about god sons and how much of a genius and a jerk Alton is? Now we also have the mystery of what happened to Cerberus' home. Let's not forget Marud. Something tells me we haven't seen the last of him. Yup, plenty of things here to keep me wanting more which is easy. The hard part is being patient for the next book.

I received this book from The JeepDiva prior to release with the express purpose of an honest review. The opinions, contents, and rating of this review are solely mine

Now this is not a series for someone that likes sweet romance - you have been warned. This is book 5 in the Bound Gods series and I would personally read in order to understand the world they live in, but if you fancy a one off damn right dark and dirty read jump straight in to this one.

Cerberus appears like a monster, his a god that uses doxies, he isn't attractive to the doxies his rougher that some of the other gods (is that possible!!!) - he isn't at fault its all in his nature as he is half man and half hyena.

Owen, is a sex worker that works to feed his drug addiction, unknown to him he is an unregistered doxie - he meets Cerberus and is shocked as he tries to help him - Owen is drawn to this strange man and the hotness of this story soon explodes.

I thought the author did a great job developing Cerberus as more than half man half monster, he really had a caring side - yes sex was beyond rough but omg it was so damn hot ( stock up on batteries ;) )

I would have been happy if this book featured just Owen and Cerberus but they do go to the sanctuary and Owen gets to meet some other doxies and they decide to play with him - the sex between the doxies is much more gentle but still seriously hot.

As these books feature the strongest type of BDSM and are seriously kinky I ofter wonder do I read them for the story or the sex...... I love the story but adore the kinkiness if I'm honest!

4 - 4.5 stars

Includes Men on men, fantasy, Rough sex, almost non con but not at same time!, Menage, Sex toys

If you've read and enjoyed this series, I don't have to tell you that it's a bit dark and unconventional.

We've met Cerberus the god who was fathered by a hyena and looks like it. And acts like it. So how could we possibly enjoy a book about him? Adrienne Wilder is how.

Cerberus is at a crossroads. Even though he's a god and can take what we wants, he no longer wishes to impose on the doxies that are at his command and serve him unwillingly because of the way he looks, smells, roughness and his unusual body parts. Especially when the gods and doxies are surface beautiful and don't look beyond his looks. And his loneliness strikes him square in the eyes when he realizes the devotion Leo (a true monster) engenders from not one but two doxies. Although Cerberus is mixed-species, he is kind-hearted.

He's left Sanctuary to hole up in a motel with ambrosia flowers when he stumbles across Owen, a drug addicted prostitute. But Leo realizes right away that Owen is an undocumented doxie who's lost his way. And Owen feels a pull towards Cerberus.

Cerberus fights his animal instincts to try do and the right thing by Owen, admitting him to a drug withdrawal facility and ignoring how much he wants Owen. When Owen leaves the facility after only three days and Owen agrees to stay with him, Cerberus and Owen let the attraction culminate in rough sex. Owen finds that he finally feels safe and he likes the way Cerberus feels and smells especially when they retreat to Cerberus' favorite spot and find comfort with each other.

Unfortunately, Alton has set things in motion and Cerberus and Owen end up at Sanctuary and things go awry.

[I wasn't sure if I was going to like this story as much as the others in the series, I can safely say that it's a home run]

I did love this, Cerberus is just amazing. I loved Owen. They both broke my heart, but were both so perfect for each other. Alton just pisses me off, okay? I mean, seriously. He just keeps fucking with things
Love Zen, what an awesome and loyal friend. Also met some new and interesting characters, so it'll be fun to see where that goes. Priest remains my absolute favorite of all time, can't wait to get his book.

Curse you Chrome for shutting down on me and chewing up my review! Assbutt :(

About the book

One star off for:
- Insane amount of typos;
- Over explaining the flower research and the Tide;
- Not nearly enough of Zen, Priest or Azazel
I would love to see future installments about these three :D

I can't stop thinking about Azazello from The Master and Margarita (no, it's not BDSM or even DS). I totally see him in this new role! =)

This one was a bit different then the previous books. It focused on Cerberus and Owen, an undocumented Doxie. Owen has lived a very hard life. So has Cerberus. Both broke my heart for different reasons. Cerberus just wanted to be accepted and wanted, and Owen gives him that. Of course, there’s a lot going on beyond that, behind the scenes. I’ve never really liked Alton but I’ve never wanted to bash his face in more than what he did to Owen and Cerberus. That man had a serious God complex and not the typical kind found in these books. He is playing God now with his flowers and the Doxies. We don’t get much in the way of Leo and his boys, just brief mentions of past things that have happened, but we do get to meet more Doxies and even new gods and closer up to some just mentioned briefly. There are some very intriguing things going on that continue to push the story and keep it exiting and interesting.

The Monster and the addict

3.75 stars

Well what can I say, this book was so much different from the other four in the series. Cerberus and Owen, monster and addict.

We start where we left off in book four. Leo, his Chimera brother and doxies. Cerberus, Zen and the other Gods had to help Leo and his Chimera brother kill the Gods son and to keep the Chimera in line.

We learn that things are not what they seem in the world of Gods and men. Owen falling into Cerberus lap is exactly what he needed but Alton can't keep his genetically engineered fingerprints out of their lives. I'm really read for him to get what is coming to him.

There are a lot of place Ms. Wilder can go with her next couple of books because that is how many she will need for us as readers to fully grasp clearly this new revaluation she unveiled in this book.

This for me was the most emotional story to date.
I have held a wary respect for Alton since the beginning.
I thought I understood he would do what was best for each God or Doxie under his care.
Without bias
What he did to Cerberus was beyond cruel-
Everything he ever told him was a lie.
He didn't see him as important, a God worthy of his status
And Cerebrus, never to take what was not freely given. Always aware that he was judged as less than, even if he never did anything to earn their judgement.
I cried for his loss, I cried for the injustice
Abs his sweet Owen... Alton did more damage - the kind that never truly heals- than Cerberus ever could.
Again I need to collect my thoughts before I finish my review.

2022: 5 stars

1. Characters: ★★★★★ (At first I thought I wouldn't be able to get pass through the fact that Cerberus is part Hyena, but I really liked how they embraced their imperfections and fitted together)
2. Atmosphere: ★★★★★ (Got to know a bit more about this world and it was fun following a more animalistic vibe than the BDSM vibe)
3. Writing: ★★★★★ (Great)
4. Plot: ★★★★★ (Missed Leo and the boys but following the journey of Cerberus finding is Doxie was great)
5. Enjoyment: ★★★★★ (Think I'm going to take a break with this series till it's fully finished because I can't deal with the possibility of being hanging in a cliffhanger/HFN scenario during an uknown period of time. About this book it was a fun read)

Cerberus and Owen would have been a stronger couple if I felt like they had more of a human connection instead of such a strong god/doxie connection. I feel like we really didn't get enough of Owen choosing Cerberus before he was more or less compelled by biology (manipulated on accident by Alton - who is getting on my nerves by playing God as a god) to trade addictions from heroin to Cerberus. There is still a bunch more DNA and science to all of this but I'm just kinda going with "magic" like The Priest.

I'm moving onto book 6 and it says the the few books are concurrent time lines with this book which should be very interesting.

Adrienne Wilder is one of the best authors writing gay fantasy erotica. Whenever I read one of her books I am just astounded by her talent. I can't stop thinking ' how does she do it ' ? A woman writing an all male cast! And then I am ashamed for having such sexist thoughts and I am reminded that she does it with talent and imagination. Omgosh! What an amazing imagination! She never jumps the shark no matter what twist or turn. She also is never lazy, no formula is followed. The hot factor is off the charts, no God pauses to put on a condom. That would be 'real life '. This is 100% delicious fantasy 😋

This was okayish. I think I’m gonna take a short break from the series as it’s beginning to repeat itself.

I found Cerberus and Owen’s story a bit like a drawn out version of Leo’s Chimera and Kaleb… and I don’t know, the book mostly made me sad.

I didn’t connect with the characters like I did in the other books. Alton is really starting to piss me off. And Azazel was kinda scary. And not the good Leo-Monster-Cock scary either. I’d prefer his training methods over Azazels any day. Hoods are just…. *shudders*.

I don't review often enough. I had to, now. This was as gutwrenchingly sad as it was intense and ultimately, beautiful.
Most series dwindle in more ways than one, with every next book. Not so, here.

I seldom bother reading fangirling 4-5 star reviews. I seek out 3 star reviews, with some nuance, citing strengths and weaknesses. Useful ones.
I read a lot, decent to good books get 3 stars, exceptional ones 4. I don't dole out 5 stars every year.

Many, many kudos to the author here. And relishing the fact that I have a few more books to go. Grateful.

I loved this book. It was an amazing story and addition to the series. BUT...the editing...oy. It was brutal. There were errors on every other page. If this weren't one of my favorite authors, I wouldn't have finished the book. AW, if you want someone to do a final clean-up edit on any of your work, I'll gladly do it for free! Your ability to draw the reader into the world and connect with the characters is amazing!

When forced to move to Sanctuary our boys are joined by all other Gods and doxies, which opens the doors to a whole new world and stories.

Cerberus had accepted his life as a monster, even among other monsters, but after meeting Owen his life and outlook change dramatically.

Great addition to the series!

This one was good...until you find out about all the DNA stuff going on behind the scenes. It's one of those Cerberus is finally going to find someone that loves him for who he is. Except, wait? He really just had his chemistry changed to fall for the first God he sees. It was just an unsatisfactory ending for me. There needed to be something more to say that Owen was actually there for Cerberus. Which you kinda get, but just not enough.

Gritty and raw with imperfect characters. I live it!

Alton's character growth was really satisfying. Owen is so real. Not beautiful and perfect in the Hollywood way. Broken and strung out and intense. Cerberus is ugly on the outside and beautiful on the inside. This is NOT a fairy tale love story with insta-love. Perfection. So glad I stuck with this series. Editing is 98% there. Big improvement from the first book.

Book 5

While the smut scenes with Cerberus didn’t really do it for me, I adored the scenes when Owen was with the doxies.

My review is four stars mainly because I love Owen and the doxies who were introduced in this book. He makes valuable friends and it was honestly heartwarming.

Cerberus isn’t really my kind of monster, but I can still appreciate that they get a happy ending.

Least favorite of the series so far, and not even because of the beastiality. Can't put my finger on why, but it just didn't grab me. Maybe it's the lack of a strong emotional connection between the MCs. I'm far more interested in Pandora's story, but it looks like I've got to get through a few more books to get to his.

Junkie and The Beast

Cerberus is an anomaly even among the gods, the half-hyena and hideous child of a woman.
Owen is too hooked on heroin to work any longer at the kind of brothel that accepts Cerberus' money.
But things have a way of following the fairytale storyline occasionally...if not faithfully.
