Pretty good overview for beginners. A good share of the book is a basic overview of Linux and Python, which is probably useful for people coming from typical Windows/Mac backgrounds. Some is already dated after a few years. The core of the book involves instructions on how to set up simple electronics projects like attaching a camera. I was more interested in this for Internet of Things and Home Automation purposes, and there isn't really a lot of that. It was worth reading to get a broader sense of what the Pi is capable of.
You just need this book and a raspberry pi and you can change the world. It's so easy to read and understand - our 12yo son learned python with it in hours (!). The examples in the book are perfect and cover the whole world of raspberry pi. The installation, the operating system, programs on pi, programming, electronics, sensors and components, combination with arduino. Its by all means the best technical guide I have ever read. And: Its fun to read. Really. Buy it. Now. :)
I have definitely not finished reading this book. But I have completed 2/3rd of the chapters.
The reason I started this book was to aid myself in home automation journey. And as the nature of this book is of "cookbook", it's impractical for me to follow each recipe mentioned as the book is designed to cover a wide array of hardware which is going to be useless for me in long run.
I'd recommend this book to people who are early in their electrical engineering or robotics journey.
Will get back to this book when required. I'm marking this book as read for now.
A very nice overview of some of what you can do with a raspberry pi. This book concentrates on connecting various sensors and add-on boards to the pi, rather than what you can do with a pi in it's default configuration, but it's pretty informative anyway, and can provide lots of ideas for projects, and help get you started enjoying the power of a pi, and learn how to use it to do just about anything you want. Very nicely done.
a good cookbook. A broad scope with just enough information to get started. Fun to browse and get ideas but also a good reference to have in case a beginner ran into a problem and wanted a "goto" reference and sometimes felt overwhelmed by web search results.
Not yet another "for dummies" but more of a reference books. Essential elements of electronics and python are presented so the beginner is not overwhelmed with facts, and the advanced reader is still satisfied. Reading this book gives the reader ideas for new projects, and enough knowledge to achieve them. This is the kind of book that can be used for both teaching and fun.
A good and informative reference. My one criticism would be that I'd rather have had more Pi-specific and/or hardware-interfacing recipes rather than the material on Linux and Python in the early chapters, since not being Pi-specific, introductory, reference, and cookbook information for those is readily available elsewhere.
An excellent approach to learn and take the basis to potentiate the use of raspberry and liked it to arduino. The professionals with background in industrial PLC’s and MMI, will take a lot of ideas from this excellent book.
The cheap, micro-computer Raspberry Pi may be the best way to learn about computers, and this Cookbook may be the best way to learn about Raspberry Pi: Its "recipes" form an accessible, complete, and practical introduction to the nouvelle cuisine of programming and electronics.
Great choice of projects. Very useful information for each project. eg 3 methods of remotely controlling Raspberry Pi. 3 ways to control voltage based position servo. circuits for power control. projects w many useful peripherals .
python sections are pretty good. everything else is info that's been repeated in about 100 other places. over great place to start if haven't read any other rpi works.
A great introduction to solve a wide variety of problems, not only on a Raspberry Pi, but in Linux in general. The Python section feels a bit outdated, but it is a great book nonetheless.
