This Adventure takes Acton and his wife to France where they must withstand attacks from their host's son and his mercenaries. The action is well-defined and makes for great suspense. The style of writing makes for easy reading and becoming engrossed in the action. The Templar's home has secret passages, hidden treasure rooms and a thoroughly modern arsenal. If anything the violence is too overwhelming, and a large surprise waits at the end. Kennedy writes a great story, well worth your attention.
I should probably go read another Dan Brown novel featuring Professor Robert Langdon. Kennedy's James Acton seems very similar, almost derivative. They both write about professors of antiquity who get drawn into religious mysteries. In this one, James Acton and his wife Laura Palmer, another professor of antiquity, are invited to a chateau in France to retrieve The True Cross. Of course, Acton is injured and his wife is the rich, SAS-trained killer who saves them both. I do enjoy a strong female character, though, so I don't mind that repeating theme. Kennedy's Acton/Palmer books are fast paced, action-packed, and well-written. If you like thrillers based on finding religious artifacts, you should like this lot.
Action thriller is and Understatement. James Acton and Laura Palmer are called to a Chateau in France to take possession of a relic. The action starts when a sniper shoots their driver on the way to the Chateau. The story goes back and forth between current times and the time in the 1100 - 1300 when the Templars were in power and how they rescued the True Cross. The story unfolds in two eras and both are action filled. The book gripping and hard to put down.
I started this Professor Action thriller at 11.40pm to help me sleep. Stupid idea as couldn't stop reading until the end. Brilliant as always this story has knights Templar , the true cross, mercenaries and the Vatican. These Professors get into lots of predicaments and have great friends to call on. J Robert Kennedy knows how to write a gripping thriller and keeps us the reader enthralled
I 've read all of the Acton novels and loved every one. It took me a long time before I discovered this author. I still need to read his other novels but I am working on them . Robert is a great writer and his novels are the type you don't want to put down. This one is the same way. Very involving.
James and Laura jump into trouble again in The Templars Revenge! Begining with Saladin and his defeat of the Crusaders (by engulfing the battlefield in flames) and attacked them as they fled the fields (not mentioned in the book Robert) [The wind blows everyday there and grows strongest in the afternon]! Talk about home field advantage! This followed by the myth of the "true cross" being rescued by the Templars and hidden away for centuries! Who knows, but a wonderful plot premise! Some of the historical records of the destruction of the Templars by King Phillip IV aided by Pope Clement V are cited along with reasonable assumptions as to the "why and how"! The here and now weaves through an outlandish conspiracy about betrayal, mercenaries, interpol, CIA and the French Police; all revolving around James and Laura! These are always the fun and dire circumstances that make this series so popular! Rediculousness followed by plausible resolution! Wildly entertaining and exciting the James Acton Thrillers are always an adventure.
Huge fan of the James Acton series, but this was not one of my favorites. Here, we revisit the Templars and the story of their rescue of the true cross, and the modern day attempt to fulfill their promise to return it to the Vatican. The backstory set during the Crusader up to the downfall of the Templars was the more interesting part of the story to me. I missed the Delta Squad here too, who only made a brief cameo in the beginning. Still, an engaging action thriller, but not Kennedy's best.
James Acton and Laura Palmer manage to get themselves into trouble, this time with a religious artifact that had been thought lost when the Saracens, under Saladin, captured Jerusalem. Their quest is mainly centered in the south of France, but spills over into Italy. Lots of action and a high body count for a couple of archaeology professors.
This book kept my attention throughout, never a dull moment. This book is the middle of the series, now I will go back and read them all from the beginning! James Acton is a great character, intelligent, clever, stubborn and strong. Enemies soon learn not to take him lightly!!
Once again, this one hits the mark for great action and a great story line. Could not put it down until the smoke cleared and the mystery solved. Looking forward to The Templar Detective!
If anyone is interested in the Knights Templar, J Robert Kennedy is your man His stories mix fact and myth in an intriguing way. I am hoping this is not the last of the Templars. They are an interesting story.
Even though this was a great book, it only gets one star. I would have never read if I'd realized that this is the same author who wrote the offensive and insulting The Protocol for which he should be ashamed of himself.
The book was great to read and the author gave you info about what was going on, they went from present time and then back in time to give you some info. The book was good to read , very well done.
I love having books that have a historical basis, but show action and results in the present day. This author handles it very well with alternating chapters past and present.
This is a very exciting book. It has history, suspense, twists and turns, and much else. I don't read books in any defined order, so I don't remember if I've read any others with the Actons, but i know i will in gutter future. Highly recommended.
Another J. Robert Kennedy success!! I honestly don't know how James Acton and Laura Palmer get into so many death-defying situations; and they probably don't either. As always, love an appearance by the secondary cast; Hugh, Mario, and Greg.
Another thrilling read! James Acton and Laura Palmer have become some of my favourite book characters. The stories are always well written. The facts of history intermingled with fiction are believable and have you sitting on the edge of your seat throughout.
A delightful entry in the series. This was an interesting angle on the Templars that I haven't encountered before, but came across as believable as a historical fiction adventure. Thisnseries has been full of fast paced adventures and I look forward to reading more.
Book 19 was a fun read and had a few errors throughout. The characters and plot was well done and a bit slow in the beginning. The political rants are a bit annoying, but have become shorter in each book.
