About the author

Sudha Murty was born in 1950 in Shiggaon in north Karnataka. She did her MTech in computer science, and is now the chairperson of the Infosys Foundation. A prolific writer in English and Kannada, she has written nine novels, four technical books, three travelogues, one collection of short stories, three collections of non-fiction pieces and two books for children.

Her books have been translated into all the major Indian languages and have sold over three lakh copies around the country. She was the recipient of the R.K. Narayan's Award for Literature and the Padma Shri in 2006.

ಪುಸ್ತಕ: ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರಲ್ಲೇ ಅಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರು

ಇತ್ತೀಚಿಗೆ ಮರುಮುದ್ರಣವಾದ ಸುಧಾಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಕಥಾಸಂಕಲನ. ಕಥೆ ಅನ್ನುವುದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಅವು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಚಿತ್ರಗಳು ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು. ಗೊರೂರುರವರ ನಮ್ಮ ಊರಿನ ರಸಿಕರು ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಹೋಲುವ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ. ನಮ್ಮ ಊರಿನ ರಸಿಕರು ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೇ ಊರನ್ನು ಕೇಂದ್ರೀಕೃತವಾಗಿಟ್ಟುಕೊಂಡು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಜನರನ್ನು ಗೊರೂರು ಅವರು ವರ್ಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಆದರೆ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಜನರ ವರ್ಣನೆಯನ್ನು ಲೇಖಕಿಯರು ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.
ಹತ್ತೊಂಭತ್ತು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರ ಕಥೆಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ ಅದರಲ್ಲಿಯ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಮರುಕಳಿಸಿವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಅಷ್ಟೇ ವೈವಿಧ್ಯಮಯವಾಗಿವೆ, ಮತ್ತು ಅವುಗಳ ಗುಣಗಳು ಪ್ರಧಾನವಾಗಿವೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಬುದ್ಧಿಯವಲ್ಲ. ಅವರಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೇನೋ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಗುಣಗಳಿದ್ದರೂ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಿಂದ ಕೆಟ್ಟವರಲ್ಲ. ಒಬ್ಬರ ಗುಣ ಅಸೂಯೆಯಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದ್ದರೆ ಒಬ್ಬರದು ಗರ್ವದ್ದು. ಆದರೂ ಸ್ವಭಾವದಿಂದ ಕೆಟ್ಟವರಲ್ಲ. ಒಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಅನ್ಯಾಯವಾದಾಗ ಅಥವಾ ಸಹಾಯ ಬೇಕಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ಟೊಂಕ ಕಟ್ಟಿ ಕೆಲಸಕ್ಕೆ ನಿಲ್ಲುವರು.
ಸುಧಾಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರು ಹುಬ್ಬಳ್ಳಿಯವರಾಗಿದ್ದರಿಂದ ಅಲ್ಲೇ ಸುತ್ತಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಊರಿನ ಹೆಸರನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿಕೊಂಡು ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೆಣೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಹಾಗೆಯೇ ಭಾಷೆಯು ಉತ್ತರಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ್ದಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಎಲ್ಲ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ನಮ್ಮ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ನೋಡಿಯೇ ನೋಡಿರುತ್ತೇವೆ, ಪರೋಕ್ಷವಾಗಿ ಅವರ ಮೇಲೆ ನಾವು ಸನೀಹರಾಗಿರುತ್ತೇವೆ.

ಬದುಕಿನ ಒಳನೋಟಗಳನ್ನು ಉದಾಹರಣೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಕ್ಲುಪ್ತವಾಗಿ ಹೇಳುವ ಸುಧಾಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಬರಹದ ರೀತಿಯೇ ಅಪ್ಯಾಯಮಾನ. ಸಮಾಜವನ್ನು ಸದಾ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮದೃಷ್ಟಿಯ ಮೂಲಕ ನೋಡಿ, ತಮ್ಮ ಅನುಭವಕ್ಕೆ ಬಂದ ಅನೇಕ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ತಿಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಪ್ರತಿ ಕತೆ/ಅಂಕಣದ ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಅಲ್ಲಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಿರುವ ಗಾದೆ ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತಷ್ಟು ಖುಷಿ ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಕೆಲವು ಕಡೆ ಆರ್ದ್ರಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಘಟನೆಗಳೂ ಇವೆ. ಎಂದಿನಂತೆ ಸರಳ ಭಾಷೆ ಹಾಗೂ ನಿರೂಪಣಾ ಶೈಲಿ.

ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಶುರು ಮಾಡಿದಾಗ ಮುಗಿಸೋದು ಹೇಗೆ ಅಂತ ಅನ್ನಿಸ್ತು ಅಷ್ಟು ನಿಧಾನಗತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಗಿತ್ತು ನನ್ನ ಓದು. ಆದರೆ ಆಮೆ ವೇಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಚಲಿಸಿದ ಈ ನನ್ನ ಓದು ಕೊನೆ ಪುಟ ಮುಟ್ಟಿದು ಗೊತ್ತೆ ಆಗಲಿಲ್ಲ!

ಸಿಂಪಲ್ಲಾಗಿ ಹೇಳ್ಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ ಇದು ನಮ್ಮ ನಿಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರ ಕಥೆ; ನಮ್ಮ ಹಾಗೂ ನಾವು ದಿನನಿತ್ಯವೂ ವ್ಯವಹರಿಸುವ, ನೋಡುವ ಹಾಗೂ ಕೇಳಿಯೇ ಇರುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವದ ಪರಿಚಯವಷ್ಟೇ. ಕಾರಂತರ ಪುಸ್ತಕವಾದ 'ಹಳ್ಳಿಯ ಹತ್ತು ಸಮಸ್ತರು' ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಸಾಮ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು. ಕಾರಂತರ ಬರಹ ಚುಟುಕಾಗಿದ್ದರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಮೂರ್ತಿರವರು ವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಬರುವ ಹಲವು ಪಾತ್ರಗಳು ಇಷ್ಟವಾದ್ವು ಅದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅನ್ಸಕ್ಕ ಎಲ್ಲರಿಗಿಂತ ಹೈಲೈಟ್ ಆಗ್ತಾಳೆ! ಧಾರವಾಡ ಭಾಷಾ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ನವಿರಾದ ವ್ಯಂಗ್ಯ ಹಾಗೂ ಹಾಸ್ಯದೊಂದಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಕಾಮಿಕಲ್ ಧಾಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಮಧುರವಾಗಿಯೂ ಸರಳವಾಗಿಯೂ ಸುಧಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ.‌ ಹಾಗೆಯೇ, ಸ್ವಾರಸ್ಯಕರವಾಗಿರುವ ಈ ಕಥಾವಸ್ತು ಒಂದು ಚುಟುಕಾದ ಧಾರಾವಾಹಿ (ಟೀವಿ ಸೀರೀಸ್ ರೀತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ) ಆದರೆ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿರುವುದು ಅಂತ ನನ್ನ ಒಂದು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ!

TV ಮುಂದೆ ಇದ್ದ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು 'Bore' ಆಗ್ತಿದೆಯಲ್ಲಾ ಅಂತ ಓದಲು ಶುರುಮಾಡಿದ ಪುಸ್ತಕವಿದು. ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಜನ 'ಸುಧಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿ'ಯವರ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿರತ್ತೆ ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಿದ್ರೂ ನಾನೆಂದು ಓದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ, ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ನಾಂದಿ ಆಯ್ತು.

ಸದ್ಯ ಸಣ್ಣ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಓದುತ್ತಿರುವ ನನಗೆ ಇದು ಒಳ್ಳೆ ಪತ್ತೆಯಾಯ್ತು. ಪುಸ್ತಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಲವಾರು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಚಿತ್ರಣವನ್ನು ಪ್ರಕಟಪದಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.

ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ಣಾಟಕದ ಭಾಷೆ ಅಲ್ಲಿನ ಜನರ ಜೀವನಶೈಲಿ ಹೇಗಿತ್ತೆಂಬುದನ್ನು ಸೊಗಸಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಬರೀ ಸಕಾರಾತ್ಮಕ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲಾ ನಕಾರತ್ಮಕ ಪಾತ್ರಗಳೂ ಚಿತ್ರಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

I have read this book in Gujrati. This book was lent to me by my father as he has recently turn a fan of Sudha Murthy’s writing. However it is not my first and I have always like her books. This book is a small collection of different people from her village. It’s an easy and fun read. Someone who enjoys her simple yet mirror like writing will enjoy this one.

ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಹೆಸರೇ ಸೂಚಿಸುವಂತೆ ಸುಧಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರು ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರ ಜನ ಜೀವನ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ ಅವರಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಅಸೂಯೆ, ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥ, ಜಿಪುಣತನ, ಪರೋಪಕಾರ, ಸಾಹಸ ಇಂತಹ ಗುಣಗಳನ್ನು ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟು ಅವರ ಜೀವನದ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಜನರ ಮುಂದಿಡುವ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದಾರೆ.


ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಪುಟಗಳನ್ನು ಮಗುಚುತ್ತಿದ್ದಂತೆ 'ಅರೇ ಇಂತಹ ಜನರು ನಮ್ಮ ಸುತ್ತಲೂ ಇದ್ದಾರಲ್ಲವೆ!?' ಅನ್ನಿಸದೇ ಇರಲಾರದು. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಲೇಖಕಿ ಸೂಕ್ಷ್ಮವಾಗಿ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ದುರ್ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಜೀವನ ಹೇಗೆ ನಷ್ಟವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಸಾಹಸ, ಪರೋಪಕಾರದಂತಹ ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ಜೀವನ ಸಾರ್ಥಕವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದು ನಿದರ್ಶಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ತಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಬದಲಾವಣೆ ಹಾಗೂ ಹೊಂದಾಣಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ಬದುಕನ್ನು ಹೇಗೆ ಸರಿಪಡಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬಹುದು ಎಂಬ ಪಾಠವೂ ಇದೆ.

ಉತ್ತರ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಭಾಷೆಯನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟ ಪಡುವವರು, ಸುಧಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಲೇಖನಗಳನ್ನು ಇಷ್ಟ ಪಡುವವರು ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಓದಬಹುದು.

I liked this book!Much better then sudha murthys other two books which I have read!But sudha murthy deserves 3 star for her work on this book,they are more than enough,but one star more for the translation!If anybody Is new to marathi reading then this book will prove to be a good practice.This is a light hearted book,and narration is good!!

This is the first book I read of Author Sudha Murty.
Such a delightful read! Book is based on north Karnataka region and this beautiful flavor of Kannada is used in this book. Its a light read with a touch of humor here and there.
Each chapter is an observation on a character, describing some events and beautiful conclusions. Most of them come with a great message. As you read you will realize you have come across some of these characters in real life. While reading the Damini's story, I felt may be some part of it is true in authors life.

Writing is simple and heart touching. Adding more books from the author to my TBR list 🙂

ಸುಧಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರ ಸರಳ ಮ��್ತು ವಾಸ್ತವಿಕ ಬರವಣಿಗೆಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾನು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಕೇಳಿದ್ದೀನಿ. ಹಾಗಾಗಿ ಬಹಳ ದಿನಗಳಿಂದ ಅವರು ಬರೆದ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೊಂದನ್ನು ಓದುವ ಆಸೆಯಿತ್ತು. ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಭಾಷಾ ಶೈಲಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆದಿರುವ ಕಾರಣ ಈ ಕಥಾ ಸಂಗ್ರಹ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಉತ್ತರ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಭಾಷೆಯ ರೂಢಿ ಇಲ್ಲದವರಿಗೆ ಕೆಲವು ಪದಗಳ ಅರ್ಥ ತಿಳಿಯದೆ ಇರಬಹುದು. ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಊಹೆ ಮಾಡಬಹುದಾದರೂ, ಪುಟದ ಕೆಳಭಾಗದಲ್ಲೋ, ಪುಸ್ತಕದ ಕೊನೆಯಲ್ಲೋ ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ವಿವರಿಸಿದ್ದರೆ ಚನ್ನಾಗಿರುವುದು.

ಕನ್ನಡ ಪುಸ್ತಕವೆಂದು ಪಕ್ಷಪಾತ ಮಾಡದೆ ಹೇಳುವುದಾದರೆ ನನಗೆ ಈ ರಚನೆ ಅಷ್ಟು ಇಷ್ಟವಾಗಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ನಾನು ಯಾವುದೇ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು ಅರ್ಧ ಓದಿ ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಆದರೆ ಇದನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣಗೊಳಿಸುವುದರಲ್ಲಿ ನನಗೆ ಆಸಕ್ತಿ ಇಲ್ಲ. ನಿತ್ಯಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿ ತಮ್ಮ ಕುಂದು ಕೊರತೆಗಳನ್ನು ಜಯಿಸಿ, ಅಸಾಧಾರಣ ಅಥವಾ ಪ್ರಶಂಸೆಗೆ ಅರ್ಹವಾದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ನಾವು ವಾರ್ತೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಅಥವಾ ದಿನಪತ್ರಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಓದುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತೇವೆ. ಶೀರ್ಷಿಕೆ ಓದಿ ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕ ಅಂತಹ ಅಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನರ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಇರಬೇಕೆಂದು ನಾನು ಭಾವಿಸಿದೆ. ಆದರೆ ಮುನ್ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದು ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜನಜೀವನ ಕುರಿತಾಗಿ ಎಂದು ಲೇಖಕಿ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟಗೊಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಇಂತಹ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆಯುವ ಉದ್ದೇಶವಾದ್ದರೂ ಏನು ಎಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ.

ಪ್ರತಿ ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಒಂದು ಗುಣವನ್ನು ಆರಿಸಿ, ಪಂಚತಂತ್ರದ ಕಥೆಗಳಂತೆ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಆ ಗುಣವನ್ನು ಸಮರ್ಥಿಸಲು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತಕ್ಕ ಸಂದರ್ಭಗಳನ್ನು ಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿದರೂ, ಅವು ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡು ಹೋಗುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಂದೇ ಮಾತನ್ನು ಪದೇ ಪದೇ ವಿಧವಿಧವಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇದಕ್ಕೆ "ಶೋ, ಡಾನ್'ಟಿ ಟೆಲ್" ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ನನ್ನ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಟೀಕೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಪದಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿರುವುದು. ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳ ಮಾತಿನ ಶೈಲಿಯನ್ನು ನಿರೂಪಿಸಲು ಇವಗಳನ್ನು ಅವರ ಸಂಭಾಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬಳಸಿದ್ದರೆ ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿತ್ತೇನೋ. ಆದರೆ ಕಥೆಯ ವಿವರಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಇವುಗಳನ್ನು ಬಳಸಿರುವುದು ನನಗೆ ಸರಿ ಅನಿಸಲಿಲ್ಲ.

ಈ ಮೇಲಿನ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟೂ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಗಂಭೀರವಾದ ಸಮಸ್ಯೆ ಇದೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಕಥೆಯಲ್ಲೂ ಜನರ ದೈಹಿಕ ಗುಣಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳನ್ನು ವಿಸ್ತಾರವಾಗಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸಲಾಗಿದೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಇವು ಈಗಾಗಲೇ ಜನರ ಮನದಲ್ಲಿ ಶಾಶ್ವತವಾಗಿ ಮನೆಮಾಡಿರುವ ಅವಾಸ್ತವಿಕ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಅನುಸಾರವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಂತಹ ವರ್ಣನೆಯ ಅಗತ್ಯವೇ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದು ನನಗೆ ಹಲವು ಬಾರಿ ಅನಿಸಿತು. ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲೇ ಓದುವುದನ್ನು ನಿಲ್ಲಿಸಲು ಇದೇ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರಣ. ಆಂಗ್ಲ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳಿಂದ ಉನ್ನತ ಗುಣಮಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸುವಾಗ, ನಾವು ನಮ್ಮ ಭಾಷೆಯ ಪುಸ್ತಕಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಒಲವು ತೋರಬಾರದು. ಈ ಪುಸ್ತಕವನ್ನು 2006 ರಲ್ಲಿ ಬರೆಯಲಾಗಿದ್ದರೂ, ಸುಧಾ ಮೂರ್ತಿಯಂತಹ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಚಿಂತಕರಿಂದ ನಾನು ಈ ಬಗೆಯ ಬರಹವನ್ನು ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಿಸಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.

सुधा मूर्तींनी एक मनाला भावणारे छान पुस्तक लिहिलं आहे. आपण आपल्या लहानपणी खुप लोकांशी भेटतो. लहानपणी सर्व गोष्टीत एक वेगळेच नाविन्य असतं. आपण नवीन लोकांना भेटतो. हळु-हळु त्यांच्या स्वभावातील पैलु कळायला लागतात. छोट्याश्या गावात राहत असाल तर त्याची मजाच काही वेगळी. सगळीच माणसं एकमेकांना ओळखतात. एकमेकांशी भांडतात आणि एकमेकांना जीवही लावतात. व्यक्ती तितक्या प्रकृती असं म्हणतात तसं प्रत्येकाचा स्वभाव फार वैशिष्ठ्यपूर्ण. निःस्वार्थ भावनेनं पडेल ते काम करणारे, कष्ट करून पुढे जाणारे, पैशाच्या धुंदीत बुडून जाणारे, स्वार्थी, कंजुस, स्वप्न पाहणारे, काही स्वप्न पूर्ण करणारे, आपली स्वप्ने मुलांच्याकरवी पुर्ण करू पाहणारे, जिद्दीनं सर्व गोष्टींना सामोरे जाणारे, सतत भांडत असलेले पती-पत्नी, कधीही न भांडणारे पती-पत्नी, सतत थापा मारणारे, त्या थापा उत्सुकतेने, आनंदी, ज्ञानी, तत्वज्ञानी, फिल्मी जीवनकथा असणारे इत्यादी लोक आपण पाहत असतो. असे लोक तुम्हाला लांब नाही तर अगदी आपल्या गल्लीबोळातसुद्धा सापडतात. काही लोकांचे स्वभाव आपल्याला आवडतात तर काही लोकांपासुन आपण चार हात लांबच राहतो.काळाच्या ओघात मनुष्य हे सगळं विसरतो किंवा किंबहुना त्याला ह्या गोष्टींचा विसर पडतो. गावी जाणं झालं किंवा जुने मित्र-मैत्रिणी भेटले की परत आठवण नक्कीच होते. अश्याच विविध लोकांच्या कथा ह्यात अलगद गुंफल्या आहेत.
ह्या पुस्तकातील बऱ्याच बारीकसारीक गोष्टी मला फार आवडल्या. हे पुस्तक मला माझ्या बालपणात घेऊन गेलं. पुस्तकाचा अनुवाद उत्तम केला आहे. आणखी एक सुंदर गोष्ट अशी की पुस्तकाची भाषा हलकी-फुलकी आणि नर्मविनोदी आहे. एखाद्या माणसाला चांगल्या-वाईट कर्माच्या हिशोबाच्या रुपात लक्षात ठेवण्यापेक्षा त्याला एक माणूस म्हणुन समजायचा प्रयत्न ह्या पुस्तकात उत्कृष्ठरीत्या केला आहे. एखाद्या व्यक्तीचा स्वभाव किती वाईट किंवा चांगला आहे, ह्याच्यावर भार न देता, अशी काय परिस्थिती होती जेणेकरून ती व्यक्ती अशी बनली असावी ह्याचं आकलन पुस्तकात फार सुंदर-रित्या केले आहे.

Sudha Murty's books are a delight to read no matter which language it is written in. This book is no less.

Written in Kannada (North Karnataka dialect), It tells you stories of several different people who are inhabitants of a small village in North Karnataka. Each chapter dedicated to one particular person and their story told thru the lens of a character called Nalini. The final chapter tells Nalini's own story. Each character have their own wisdom and life lesson to share.

Every chapter in this book is memorable and difficult to pick favorites. Personally, the most memorable characters for me were

"Conductor Bheemana" who is always happy no matter the situation.
"Asooye Anasakka" who always gossips about everybody, but is also the first one to help in emergency.
"Aduge Ambakka", who loves to cook and experiment with food.
"Dabbi Nalini", the narrator of the book herself and her story of dabbi/box.

A beautiful book and must read for all Kannada book readers.

The people we are surrounded by aren't perfect, just like us. And some of them are even unbearable but each person teaches us something and each one has something beautiful to offer. It's all about perspective!

You may think that It's a lame moral science quote, but you know what it's true. Try this exercise. Pick a person from your own life, who you think is useless. And then try to analyze that person, I bet you'll find something that you need to learn.

That's all this book is about! The different chapters are of different persons. Their uniqueness, their stories with a beautiful touch of south Indian culture. The simplicity of the book needs to be appreciated. While reading the book it feels like reading a raw diary which makes you feel like home.

The story reveals in and around Sudha Murthy's family friends. She was successful in documenting her experience and memories in a more elaborated way. Few of the characters are really appreciative, and guide on how to be GOOD with others. Good to read the book once.
