Rate this book

René Lodge Brabazon Raymond was born on 24th December 1906 in London, England, the son of Colonel Francis Raymond of the colonial Indian Army, a veterinary surgeon. His father intended his son to have a scientific career, was initially educated at King's School, Rochester, Kent. He left home at the age of 18 and became at different times a children's encyclopedia salesman, a salesman in a bookshop, and executive for a book wholesaler before turning to a writing career that produced more than 90 mystery books. His interests included photography (he was up to professional standard), reading and listening to classical music, being a particularly enthusiastic opera lover. Also as a form of relaxation between novels, he put together highly complicated and sophisticated Meccano models.

In 1932, Raymond married Sylvia Ray, who gave him a son. They were together until his death fifty three years later. Prohibition and the ensuing US Great Depression (1929–1939), had given rise to the Chicago gangster culture just prior to World War II. This, combined with her book trade experience, made him realise that there was a big demand for gangster stories. He wrote as R. Raymond, James Hadley Chase, James L. Docherty, Ambrose Grant and Raymond Marshall.

During World War II he served in the Royal Air Force, achieving the rank of Squadron Leader. Chase edited the RAF Journal with David Langdon and had several stories from it published after the war in the book Slipstream: A Royal Air Force Anthology.

Raymond moved to France in 1956 and then to Switzerland in 1969, living a secluded life in Corseaux-sur-Vevey, on Lake Geneva, from 1974. He eventually died there peacefully on 6 February 1985.

Though published in 1976, Chase’s “Do Me A Favour – Drop Dead” feels like it were published two decades earlier – in 1956. It’s the story of a stranger come to a small town only to find everyone is gunning for the fortune Frank Marshall is bound to inherit. The thing is they are all money hungry, including the erstwhile widow to be and our scammer from out of town. The Widow to be of course is in a category all her own of greed and avarice and cold hearted plotting, but she also is sheer lust to any man and Keith Devery is her latest chump. The killing of Frank is almost a non-event. The real fun is the surging mob after his fortune.

How could Keith Devery be such a mug? How could he not see what Beth Marshall was planning? How could he walk right into the trap she and Deputy Ross have set for him? This is classic James Hadley Chase. A murder story that pushes the pace to a whirlwind finale. Only one drawback. As JHC has moved away from graphic depictions of violence in his later fiction, he has replaced it with some really awkward, smutty sex scenes. There are another couple of them, here. It's not that they don't belong. It's just that JHC doesn't carry them off well. Some of Chase's earlier fiction was published by Harlequin, who apparently at one time had a sizable holding of crime and thriller titles before becoming known for "Harlequin Romance" later. Some of Chase's sex scenes could fit in a Harlequin Romance. They are straight out bodice rippers. And they just seem wrong for his fiction. Listening to JHC talk about "a screw" and "a lay" simply sounds oafish. But if you get past that, the old Chase is still there in this story.

Even in coming up with cool and gorgeous titles for his incomparable books, James Chase was second to none. The title of this book is another proof of this. One more thing – the Author probably had his own, peculiar, deep, extremely emotional, sensitive, delicate attitude towards the female sex. This is always evident from his great novels. This is how it is in this book. One spectacular woman, the wife of a certain Marshall, seduces the protagonist of this crime fiction story and it is because of her that he commits murder, kills the husband of this woman. But his biggest problem arises after this woman, already a widow, disappears from view.

Another quick pulp read from the master of thrillers, although on this occasion the plot leaned a little too heavily on James M. Cain's The Postman Always Rings Twice. Still its Chase, so the story moves along at breath-taking speed and we forgive him for borrowing an idea here or there along the way.

Genius!

This is a touch of a genius. Kept me spellbound. Expertly written and kept simple. Made it unputdownable from start to finish. Left me guessing for a closure. What a stroke of genius. It is another nice one from James Hadley Chase.

Flatters to deceive

A bit boring. Promises much in the beginning but peters out in the end. I skipped a lot of sentences and still did not miss much.

Just another crackerjack story from the thriller maestro, my third time in the last 40 years and I still can't get enough. His descriptions of his characters and his attention to detail in my opinion the master writer is and always be in a class of his own, absolutely brilliant......

another one of those quintessential james hadley chase books - crime, sleaze, drugs, underdregs of the world, fast racy thriller.
