Her past made her a guardian. Her choice made her a leader. For Captain Aurora Hawke, becoming the de facto leader of an entire race wasn’t part of her plan. Neither was lying to the Galactic Council. Or traveling the galaxy in search of a suitable homeworld for three hundred refugees recently freed from a life of torture and isolation. To make matters worse? Their former captors will stop at nothing to track them down. Good thing she has help.
While Aurora’s busy locating a homeworld, Cade Ellis and his elite team of trained operatives must guard the refugees from the prying eyes of the mole in the Galactic Council who is feeding information to their elusive enemy. But hiding three hundred people is no easy task, especially on an aging medical freighter with limited resources. Setting down on the forbidden planet of Burrow might not be the smartest choice, but it’s the only option he has left.
Audrey Sharpe grew up believing in the Force and dreaming of becoming captain of the Enterprise. She’s still working out the logistics of moving objects with her mind, but writing science fiction provides a pretty good alternative. When she’s not off exploring the galaxy with Aurora and her crew, she lives in the Sonoran Desert, where she has an excellent view of the stars. I loved The Dark of Night and said that it was very well written. Because of that the bar was very high for The Chains of Freedom, the second book. Well, Sharpe had no trouble clearing that bar. Like many second books The Chains of Freedom sets up the next hurdle for the Starhawke and her crew. The romance in the book is brought fully into the light but there is something that Aurora does not know about her long time friend and his family. Everything is not what it seemed even at the beginning. The search for a home world for the three hundred refugees recently freed was successful so one of the problems left from the first book was solved but new problems were revealed. The character development, plot, and world building continued to be first rate. Now I just have to wait for the next book in the series. There are secrets that look like they will be devastating to Aurora and the bar and expectations are still high.
This is a must read for fans of Science Fiction Romance.
Fairly good story, perhaps a little too much fantasy and the ending went too far into the next episode. The last couple of chapters could easily be moved to the next book making this book's ending more complete.
In the second book of the Starhawke Rising series, Captain Aurora Hawke’s task is to find a homeworld for the group of refugees that were rescued in the first book by her crew working with Cade Ellis and his team. Meanwhile, Cade is tasked with protecting the refugees until they can be relocated to their new home. He chooses a planet that is supposed to be off limits, since no one will think to look for them there, which works pretty well for the most part, until trouble finds them. The characters really began to stand out in this story, as we learned more about them and their motivations. There was some exciting action, some political machinations, and a bit of romance, along with the character development and exploration of the different worlds, including the Kraed’s home planet. There are still more adventures to come, and some questions I can’t wait to hear the answers to, so I’m looking forward to reading the next book, The Honor of Deceit.
The story line is basically very good as are the characters, two big problems kept me from getting into the story as much as I would have liked. First: Successful marriages between aliens with children. Not plausible. Even if they have genetic code similar to ours, there would be too many differences for them to produce living offspring, much less offspring capable of reproducing. This was a problem in the original Star Trek series with Mr. Spock. As Carl Sagan noted, "You would be more likely to successfully mate with a spider than an alien."
Another problem were the aliens were too human. With identical feelings and emotions.
My first time with this author of science fiction. I'm glad to see that sci-fi storytelling is in capable hands. Wonderful tale. Just enough hardware and emotions. Pretty good character development, and a nice twist with the two males. Good development of the new species. Looking forward to the next book.
I’m enjoying this series more than many I’ve read recently. They were good books too but not as much fun. I really like the characters and find them very interesting and mostly likable. The added stress of the relationship between Cade and Jonarec keeps me intrigued and looking forward to the next book in the series! Enjoy!
Both enemies and allies have plans for the main character and her people. The story continues to be engaging and interesting. The challenges that are before the main character and her team at the end of this book seem insurmountable. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
Great to see these characters grow. From the first book I to this one, we get even deeper into understanding what makes everyone click. Looking forward to seeing how they continue to grow.
The complexity of this universe is as intriguing as the characters. The mystery in the story as it unfolds has me guessing. I am enjoying the different species and worlds we are visiting with the characters.
This was a great read. Unlike a lot of modern stories, where the story has to peek between pages of erotic descriptions, this story is all story. Jump on for the nonstop adventure.
An enjoyable read, and a lot of mystery. Plenty of angst, and conflict abounding. I took off a star because of needing proofreading. The most annoying thing I found was the total exclusion of the word "of", as in " a couple times" which was to be found all the way through the book.
Good story line with interesting characters. Lots of complex character interactions and development. The setting is very interesting that keeps me reading.
