What are germs? How do they spread? And how do medicines help? Curious young children can take a closer look at those mischievous, microscopic bacteria and viruses in this fascinating introduction to germs and hygiene, with 30 flaps to lift and tips on hand-washing and staying healthy.
Katie has been writing non-fiction children's books for almost half her life and loves questioning the world from a child's point of view. She's developed some of Usborne's bestselling series, including the See Inside books and the Lift-the-Flap Questions & Answers series.
This was such a great read! After reading this, I realized that this would be great to read to younger students Pre-K and Kindergarten. It is a cute book about germs and what germs are. With so much going on in this world, especially after COVID I figured it would be great to read to the young ones. Allow them to understand what germs are and why we need to take care of ourselves so we do not get sick. It also helps them understand that we need to wash our hands to keep germs away. This does go over the good bacteria that we have in our bodies as well.
Overall this would be great to read to young students so that they understand and obtain healthy habits to keep themselves healthy.
Update: still going strong. This one is frequently requested. I think it's the dog poo, though also interested in the blood cells. ;) ------------------------------------------------ Has the cutest macrophages you'll ever see. A bit spurious in places re: antibody production and antigen presentation and MHC classes in general, but first year Immunology will set you straight.
Extra points for reiteration that antibiotics don't work against viruses and viral illnesses; that not all bacteria are pathogenic (very much a minority that are, and we need the rest of them so much more than most people realise); AND that you should ALWAYS TAKE THE FULL COURSE OF ANTIBIOTICS NO MATTER WHAT. It is imperative - even if you feel better, if you don't take those last doses, YOU ARE LITERALLY CREATING SUPERBUGS BY FOMENTATION OF RESISTANCE IN A PREVIOUSLY SUSCEPTIBLE STRAIN! I am personally of the belief that people should take and pass a POP QUIZ on this subject before being issued a prescription for any antibiotic(s). It's as important as driving tests before issuing licenses!!! Pass on that knowledge - YOU DON'T SKIP A DOSE. EVER!!!
A cute and interactive children's book about germs! The book shares an overview of what germs are, where they can be found, what they can cause, and how they are spread! The book is very interactive with separate flaps that children can flip to read more and learn more specific facts about the topic of germs on that page. The last page of the book discusses "How can I stop germs?" I thought this was a perfect page to review with young children who need some education behind why it is so important to wash your hands. It is also perfect for toddlers who just want that interactive component during story time. I definitely recommend it!
Olen kovin mieltynyt tähän Oppi&Ilo -tutkimissarjaan.
"What Are Germs" has surprisingly become my son's favorite, matching his love of rockets! He seeks it out again and again!
This helped him understand why he was sick, how his body was fighting the germs, and how to avoid getting sick again. After reading the whole book, he felt much stronger and more confident in the face of germs. I was happy because it was cute, scientifically accurate, and gave him specific actions to help prevent him getting sick or spreading germs.
My son loved the flaps and I loved the cartoon germs, since everything was happy, upbeat, and cute, but germs can be scary for a sick little kid who's new to it all, so the first read was hard. But once we read about all the ways our bodies fight germs, how medicines and vaccines help, and what he can do to keep germs out, he absolutely loved it. That 2nd half really empowered him and calmed him.
I recommend it for flu season or to explain germ basics, but if you read it to a small child who's already sick, skip from what germs are to how you fight them. Then once they're done with the book, read the skipped part.
I think my LO is a bit young for this, though they do love the flaps. From an adult perspective the information seems to be presented in an age appropriate way and it's more in depth than I was expecting. I love that it included tios in what to do to help prevent the spread of germs. Hopefully my LO will be able to follow it soon.
This is my kids favorite book about the immune system and learning how their bodies fight diseases. I especially love the explanation of immunizations and medications. The pictures are hilarious (to me, as a nurse) and accurate (at a kids level).
A very easy to read book which is a nice, short introduction to germs. I didn't give it 5 stars because it is seldom requested for rereads even though I try to put it right at the front of the bookshelves.
Another great educational, fun and interesting book from usborne to get kids interested. This has great pictures and explains things easily for young kids.
This informational book provides a fun and interactive way to teach young children about germs and general hygiene. There are flaps on every page that are sure to keep children's attention as they learn what germs are, how they spread and what they do to our bodies. There are simple and great suggestions on how children can help stop the spread of germs. I would say this is a quality book for preschool age children and would be especially helpful for transitioning into a school setting.
This nonfiction lift the flap book is a favorite with my nephews! I bought it almost a year ago as an opening conversation about the pandemic and why we had to be so careful. My then 2 1/2 and almost 2 year old nephews had just had their first experience with a full isolation lockdown and we had decided that we could safely open our bubble up between my household and my two sisters’ households so I could love on my ‘phews again and my sisters could get some work done. I was so happy to find this book that could help explain why we were not kissing or sharing cups and why we were even more focused on hand washing. This book is so engaging with the lift the flaps and the information is simple enough that they could start to understand the concept of germs. A year later, this is still a favorite! And my ‘phews reference it often.
