This book is great for elementary students, but I'm sure you can adapt some ideas from this book for younger or older children. The book provides space for you to write and draw various things related to architecture (make lists, how to be organized, what material to use, drawing blueprints, drawing buildings, etc.). The original story of Iggy Peck is also included at the beginning of the book which was a very nice addition. I also find it nice how it has a list of easy household items you can use for building things. The book goes over the principles of design (which is used in all visual art forms I feel like) and explains each one pretty well on how it pertains to architecture and building.
There are so many areas for you to draw your building ideas and plans. The book teaches you how an architect works (inspiration, drawing, how to draw a blueprint, have your own mark, and then implement your plan). It gives you ideas on what you can use to build and tells you what other people have used to build before. There's examples of different buildings and also shows you different features of buildings and what purpose they hold. This book is perfect for any child who is interested in architecture and building. So many opportunities for them to explore their creative ideas!
I also loved the section on blueprints and what kind of symbols or lines are used to distinguish various things in a house/floor plan (how to draw different doors, furniture, etc.). It was so fascinating to learn the difference between drawing a doorway and drawing hinged doors. I had no idea!
I'm an architecture buff, so that may be why I enjoy the Iggy Peck books the most out of this series. I love that there's an activity book that goes along with this series -- the entire concept is just genius. Lots of fun stuff here to be used at home or in a classroom setting.
This is a STEM activity book, with flashbacks at the start to set up the concept behind all the activities, architecture, with light-hearted humor at times.
We used this book for homeschool lessons while Simon was interested in architecture. He especially enjoyed the worksheets that prompted him to design his 0wn buildings, and the floor plans.
