According to the law of attraction, women and men can’t be friends. Contrary to this myth, my friendship with Coriander Phillips does not rest on unrequited love or un-actualized lust. We’ve been inseparable since the day I pulled one of her pigtails and she punched me in the gut. She’s hilarious, fun to hang out with. Together, we’re like peanut butter and jelly, spaghetti and meatballs, wings and beer. A match made in heaven. She’s the bomb.Did I mention she’s smokin’ hot? I’ve checked her out…maybe once or twice. Hey, I’m a guy.Seriously, no awkwardness, no secret yearning for our relationship to escalate beyond the purely platonic. I’m the boy friend—the loyal shoulder she cries on, the dispenser of coffee, sympathy, hugs, advice, and affection with no expectations.Until the invisible line between friends and lovers became blurry. Now I want more. I want her.All I have to do is convince her we can be more than friends. Right? If only it were that easy.

***3.5 STARS***

CLINK LINK - unfiltered review here so I'm not banned from Goodreads :) ... https://prettymessreading.wordpress.c...

This was almost a 4 STAR read, then it became 3 STARS, after awhile it redeemed itself slightly to a 3.5 STAR book. Let me tell you all about it.

This book is told completely from Dean’s point of view and is the perfect example of how much of an idiot men can be. Now, I’m not saying I don’t like Dean because I do. He’s funny, charismatic, charming, and a pretty nice guy. I just can’t rock with some of his ways as far as his outlook on women. As a friend – he’s great. As a boyfriend – not so much. That’s one of the cutest things about this book, really. What he is great at is being an impressive boy friend.

Coriander, AKA Cori, is stunning, sweet, caring and the perfect girl friend for Dean. They have known each other for 20 years. They’re BFF’s although being the manly man Dean is, he hates using that term to describe himself. Cori knows everything about Dean, including his lack of desire to be in a relationship, to get married and/or to have children. She understands that he wants to be a bachelor for the rest of his life and supports him and his choices. I liked Cori for the most part because she never let herself become anyone’s doormat. We couldn’t be friends in real life, but we’ll get to that later.

Here’s the good part about reading a book entirely from the males POV, you realize just how clueless they really are. I don’t even know how I forget this fact, given that I’m married to a part-time idiot, but whatever. Dean has no intentions to hurt anyone, but because he’s a guy he ends up hurting a few people along the way. Mostly Cori. God, does he do some of the stupidest things in the world. Bless his heart. He really is a lovable guy, though.

“Dean Conrad Morello, ending our friendship is not impossible. However, if I ever cut all ties with you, it will be because you hand me the scissors, not because of a man. Do you get that.? – Cori

Right! Preach, girl, preach!

One thing that I did love about Cori was the fact that she knew her worth – even though she frustrated me a few times when she forgot how important she was. Sometimes I wanted to jump into the book and shake her, reminding her that it’s not only Dean who is important but you are too. But every woman does something stupid for a man every once and awhile. I know I have.

Of course we all know how the story was going to go, but reading how they got to the HEA was fun. Even more so when they start blurring that invisible friendship line. I was surprised how the author wrote their hook-up. She gave Cori strength and Dean the ability to be more humble.

While Dean made Cori an option, she became her own priority – just like it should be. It took her wayyyyyyy to long to remember that.
Something tells me Coriander and I have just become strangers who know each other too well. – Dean

Okay, so I need to tell y’all. . . Dean pulls this stunt that would have had me slashing his tires and pouring bleach on all of his clothes. Oh, I’m a crazy bitch and you do not want to fuck with me. I can get real petty. I don’t like to, but I can and will if needs be. I have a sweet face but don’t let that fool you. If he would have done that with me. . . y’all might as well have my bail money and lawyer ready.

This little stunt is where we went from 4 STARS down to 3 STARS real quick. I’m not going to tell you what it is, you have to read the book for yourself. It’s juicy, though.

Can Dean my book boyfriend? Absolutely not. He plays too much for me. He would get hurt fucking with me. With that being said, does he deserve to be someone else’s book boyfriend? He does. Deep down, he is a really good person.

But when Dean and Cori were good, they were great.

This book is a fun and entertaining read seeing how someone can go from the boy friend to the boyfriend.

Here’s my recommendation for The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie. . . Yes, read it! If you want a book that you can have a little fun with then you should pick it up. It’s funny, sweet and flows beautifully. BTW, it’s free on Kindle Unlimited!

First time reading a book written by Mika Jolie but not my last. "My Boy Friend" was a fantastic read written in the hero's Dean's POV (charming but a man-whore all the same). Coriander aka Cori, his best friend since grade school was a good girl who had began thinking about having a family and boy was that like whiplash for Dean's poor ego as well as his hidden fantasies ... that alone did the 360 degree change in Dean's tune about Cori in the best friend zone only.

This is a must read so see how Dean tells his story with great supportive friends while dealing with the boundaries of friendship versus wanting more with Cori!

5 star read!

An easy and quite entertaining read, all told from hero's POV only, which was honestly the most interesting thing about this book... there wasn't any deep or complicated storyline, but overall a decent read with childhood-friends to lovers trope.

The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie
GENRE: Contemporary Romance
NARRATION: Hero’s POV
BOOK DETAILS: Standalone
AUDIO AVAILABLE? Whisper- sync voice ready

THE STORY:
This is a sweet Friends to lover’s story.

Dean Morello and Coriander “Cori” Phillips grew up together, their families are connected, their friends mutual, their lives intertwined, yet they have always just been the best of friends and nothing more.

Cori is ready to find the one, the one she can settle down with and have a family and share her forever with. The one person she wants though is not boyfriend material let alone husband material, despite her attraction to her best friend she has never perused him, knowing her friendship meant more than risking losing it.

“Friends buy you lunch. Best friends eat your lunch.”

Deans does not intend to hurt anyone he sleeps with and, he is always open and honest with woman about not wanting to pursue a relationship. But he is completely clueless that his attitude and actions are doing exactly that, especially to one woman in particular, his best friend.

Now that Cori has declared she is in search of Mr Right and starts to go on lots of dates, Dean is starting to feel jealous and an unexplained need for her he had never felt so strongly before.
One night, one slip, one kiss changes their friendship forever.

“if I ever cut ties with you, it will be because you hand me the scissors”

description

MY THOUGHTS:
The whole book is told in Dean’s POV. He is quiet humorous and charismatic. Dean is generally a nice guy he is confident with his charms and good looks but his arrogant outlook towards woman (that are not his friend) is a complete turn off, and If I was his friend that would deter me from ever perusing anything past friendship with him.

Cori is sweet and kind, the perfect friend to Dean, but I was disappointed with her reaction in certain situations, I wanted her to have more of a voice, find confidence to speak her mind truthfully without pause or conflict.

I found it hard to connect with Cori, as most of the book was Dean’s inner monologue, it would have been better in Dual POV to give us more insight into Cori’s struggles with the friendship zone.
Although Dean never intended to hurt Cori and that was clear but my God he was so stupid! surely men are not that clueless? Really? I just found it too unconvincing and unbelievable that Dean did not know his best friend of twenty years was in love with him.

This is the first book I had read from Mika Jolie, it was cute and entertaining but too predictable and didn’t have enough depth or originality to go above the 3-star mark for me unfortunately.

MY RATINGS: (All ratings are out of 5)
HERO RATING: 3
HEROINE RATING: 3
BLUSH RATING: 3
ROMANCE RATING: 3
PLOT RATING: 3
OVERALL: 3 Blushing Stars

DO I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK?
Yes, if you’re after a light entertaining read that doesn’t drain you too emotionally or make you over think. The story yet predictable has a sweet satisfying HEA.

Narrated by: Eric Rolon, Kylie Stewart
Length: 7 hrs and 49 mins

Eric Rolan has the perfect voice and narration style to portray Dean, he is exactly how I would have pictured him to sound. He is on point with his expressions and the fact the narration is dual narrative you don’t have to put up with listening to him try to narrate the opposite sex.

Kylie was a good fit for Cori and easy to listen to. I enjoyed this book way more because of the brilliant narration rather than the story line. Kylie and Eric have a way of capturing their audience and would most likely even make the English dictionary sound fascinating.

Mika Jolie takes a friends to lovers tale and colors it fabulous, funny, and freakishly adorable with THE BOY FRIEND! Cori and Dean’s story began with a tug of a pigtail and a punch to the gut and from age seven on, they were best friends. Now they are approaching thirty and things begin to take a slight turn, or maybe it was like that plunge of a roller coaster as all of a sudden with one comment, Cori has become 100% pure female perfection in Dean’s eyes. (Yes, he has looked, so sue him, he admits he’s a guy.) Is he just awakening to the fact that they are meant to be together? Does Cori feel the same?

If they cross that blurred line between friends and lovers, if they do some dancing in the sheets, will it spoil all they have or will it open their eyes to what everyone else knows?
Get ready to smile, smirk, roll your eyes and fall in love with two of the most “in denial” characters ever! Mika Jolie has nailed the fun in awkward romantic beginnings with witty banter, the mental musings of Dean and the sheer enjoyment of the interactions these two share. Sure, there is some conflict, maybe a little heartache and a lot of misunderstandings, but what couple hasn’t gone through those times?

Humanity at its most vulnerable, humor and heart galore, Cori and Dean are “That Couple” that everyone wants to be part of! Mika Jolie plays a very sharp Cupid as she colors her tale with wickedly fun love!

I received an ARC edition from Mika Jolie in exchange for my honest and voluntary review.

-This book fell victim to a few pitfalls, if you ask me. One, the voice of the hero, whose POV is the only one we see liked to remind you he's a man like every paragraph. So is he a man, or a character, or just a man-type character? I'd go with caricature given the sheer number of times reference is made to his masculinity.
-The friends-to-lovers is difficult to pull off. I love it, but it's just difficult to do well. This was a bit of strike two for this book. I don't like all the supporting characters telling the main characters they are in love with their best friend. Boo. Also, no one does that in real life in the quantity seen here. the only convincing ones were his male friends that were basically like "ok. whatever. keep telling yourself that but we know the score."
-It's become increasingly common in this male POV of romance novels for the man to be a total douche-player.I'd LOVE to read an all male POV where the guy was sweet, normal, tried hard....are we so taken with the idea of changing the man we have to reform the most repugnant among them in our fantasies?
-Also, give me a reason that 30 year old from a loving fun family wouldn't see marriage in his future.
-Finally, if you loved your best friend would it feel gradual or boom? I don't know, and I'm sure it's not the same but I guess I think if you already LOVE someone and then figure out you also are attracted to them, boom: future mate.

I did like some of it. I kept reading so I guess something worked. The last 30% particularly felt strong. It just seems all of the above are what make a friends-to-lovers risky to pull off.

This book should be tittled Guide to Dating Your Best Friend. Told from male POV. See there are so many demand from females dying to know what goes through their male date during dating game. This book delivers that male POV in funny and cute way.

I smile now and there while listening to the audio book. I wish the story can have more depth. Because i feel the story is a bit flat. Character, especially Dean was cute and fun.

Overal it is a decent read.

2.5 best friends to lovers stars

Skimmed the last 35%. The book isn’t bad, it just didn’t work for me. The hero takes too long to “wake up” and see what’s right in front of his face. And I wish the heroine would have just been more explicit about what she wanted. I mean I get that they were both worried about ruining the friendship, but. I don’t know. It’s a decent best friends to lovers read, but it’s not going on my favorites list.

Dean and Coriander are best friends and have been since Cori mistook him as a playround bully in elementary school. She socked him in the stomach (in defense of his sister) and their friendship was forever solidified.

Fast forward 20 years later and the two are still going strong as friends. Cori is ready for love and babies and her desire sends Dean into a tailspin because he realizes it could be the beginning of the end of them. He feels malcontent, though he's not entirely sure why he's feeling this way. He tries to subtlety talk her out of her plan, but she's not budging. When Cori mentions she's going to set up a online dating profile Dean decides to take Cori's quest on as a special project -- because he knows how guys are -- he's one of them!

When we initially meet Dean he comes off as a arrogant and cocky bastard -- but nothing could be further from the truth. Most ACBs don't feel guilt and Dean feels it on more than one occasion and even allows a casual fling to bring out that emotion in him. The sage advice he pontificates throughout the story is spot on ... for example, you want to know how men feel and think -- ask a guy friend -- he's right -- ladies, you gotta go to the source!

When Cori meets a guy that she doesn't hate -- that's when the story kicks into high gear as we see Dean struggle with seeing his friend with another guy. Dean is feeling some type of way and he isn't happy about it, nor does he completely understand it. Then, something happens that he never saw coming and it further confuses him and sets into motion things that can never be unsaid or undone.

If you can suspend disbelief and buy into the fact that Dean doesn't know his best friend (of 20 years) is in love with him, then the story totally works. Overall, I still liked the story. However, what ultimately happens cannot solely be put on his shoulders because as women we have to tell and sometimes show men what we want from them. Failure to communicate will often invite unnecessary heartache and drama!

This story has a beautiful, sweet ending.

This was one of the most fun filled, light, quirky and engaging reads I’ve experienced in a while.

Written solely in Dean’s point of view, we are exposed to all the hilarious and sometimes atrocious thoughts the male of the species encounters. And despite some of his highly reprehensible decisions, I absolutely loved him.

Dean and Cori have been friends since they were seven years old. There is nothing they wouldn’t do for each other. When Cori decides it’s time for her to find “the one” she can settle down with and start a family, Dean worries how that will change their relationship. They have always chosen each other over any significant other that might try to separate them.

This is about Dean’s struggle to accept that his feelings for Cori are more than just a friend who is a boy and his desire to be her boyfriend. This is not going to be a read some of my GR friends will want to partake of. He’s a man whore, he sleeps with a woman even after he recognizes he has deeper feelings for Cori, and he allows a situation to continue that will ultimately destroy Cori’s heart. (One star lost because that isn’t my ideal man.) In spite of all of that, I personally found him to be completely redeemable. Having his POV allowed me to see his thought processes along the way. Yes, I definitely wanted to smack him upside the head a time or two for being such an a-hole, but his suffering was enough to soothe my rioting emotions.

I suspect his friends will be having their own story if they haven’t already. This was my first book by this author so I must check out her backlist as well as any future works.

My honest review is for a special copy provided by the author.

Just the blurb made me tired. The last part of it when he says he needs to convince her made me cringe because it's sounds it was a copy/paste of another blurb. I'm so sure I read this blurb in other books of other authors. Yes, in the plural. This has been done before. Numerous times. It looks like the recycle bin it's still full.

Sweet fancy Moses, I am on a bad book streak, folks. It’s getting to be like the setup for a terrifying horror movie. I mean, what if I NEVER AGAIN find a book I love?? AAAAGGGHHHH! But I digress...didn’t mean to spiral on y’all… (*clears throat*)

So, about this book...there are a few issues that made me DNF at 21%. Here we go:

1. Why is it that so many books told from the male POV feel the need to point out just how manly and virile and alpha the hero is in EVERY OTHER FREAKIN’ sentence? I get it. Dean’s hot and can have any woman he wants (and often does). I don’t need to be reminded of it so often. After a while it becomes a bit of “the lady doth protest too much”, if you get my drift.

2. No matter how hot and manly and virile Dean is, he’s a douche. A self-centered, self-aggrandizing, arrogant AF douche. And probably a syphilis-ridden douche, based on the sheer number of chicks he’s banging/has banged. (One of which he calls “Red” because he can’t even remember her name after multiple bangs) Why are so many heroes like this in romance? Why can’t I read a book written from the POV of a nice, normal, non-whorey dude? I’m sure they’re out there. I’m so sick of the manwhores.

3. Cori seems like a great girl. No idea why she’d be best friends with a syphilis-ridden douche like Dean. Doesn’t the fact that he treats other women so abominably bother her at all? Apparently not.
Dean’s 30, hasn’t had a traumatic past, doesn’t have any terrible diseases (other than the—admittedly alleged—syphilis) that he could pass on to a child. So, why wouldn’t he ever see himself settling down, getting married, and starting a family? Seems super weird to me.

4. Coriander? Really? Even for a hippie, artsy-fartsy gal that’s a little weird.

And so, I persevere, looking for a read that won’t make me rant and rage...

Beware: my review might be a little crude to some

Will we ever get over these romances with ridiculously rude and inconsiderate man-whores, who are in no way likeable? I will never tell an author how to write their own book, but I am getting sooo tired of these weak willed women that allow men to stomp all over their hearts during the day and fuck them silly into the night.

Give me the women that care about and respect themselves because surely, they deserve to be treated better, right? Just like I deserve to read a romance where the hero isn't a cliche mess who lives, breathes, and thinks about fucking. Why is this such a common thing in romance? Yes, men think about sex. A lot (so do women). BUT that's not all they should be about, especially in a book. Give me some character depth, not just a dick that doesn't stop pounding.

This needed a whole lot of work. These characters had absolutely nothing to them other than their genitals. There wasn't even any romance really, just a man-baby stuck in his own head thinking about screwing every female that walks. Dean might have respected Cori's feelings as a friend, but he has zero respect for her in a romantic sense. If this book had ended with Cori moving on with some man that treated her better, had more stability, and had a better outlook on relationships in general, I honestly would have been more satisfied and would have gave it a higher rating.

I'm sort of torn by this book. At times I'm quite enjoying it but at other times I'm just thinking, for goodness sake will SOMETHING happen. The writing is of a good quality, the prose is easy to read and flows well. The dialogue and banter is good and there have been some genuinely amusing moments. It has everything in there that should make it a good book but for me it isn't.

I'm sorry but there is too much repetition - how many times does the 'hero' need to tell me he's sexy, he isn't into commitment, he's up front about that, he's fit .... blah blah blah. There is too much 'nothing really happening', too much navel gazing and at times the book is trying too hard to be witty/amusing.

At 40% there is very little about Conrad to really like and there has been so very little about Cori that I dont 'know' her enough to decide if I like her or if she is a believable character. It has felt like I am forcing myself to read this story, I'm just not engaging with it for some reason.

At the moment this is a DNF for me. I will come back to it in a day or so and see if I change my mind and get into this book.

UPDATE - I tried with this book again but soon realised it wasn't for me.

Very cliche characters and not much of anything going on. The 'friends to lovers' plot has been done before (which is fine) but the characters have also been written before. It felt like deja vu in the worst way! I wasn't even at the half point of this book when the question 'Why am I reading this?' popped up in my mind. I couldn't find a reason so I stopped. I'm tired of reading books with plots that have fallen victim to the recycling bin only to return with less vibrancy & soul than before. I love this author but I'm disappointed.

Where is the heart in this book?? Was it lost in the the hero's pants? Because this plot seems to be written around it.

*This book was generously provided by Rock Star Lit PR for my review and enjoyment. Huge thanks!

These days, I hear the words 'Mika Jolie' and my heart does a little extra jump while my mind wonders what goodness she could possibly have in store for me! My heart and mind are smart creatures, because Mika Jolie freaking rocks my socks! Her stories contain bits and pieces of all the things I love most in a good story- romance, family, friendships, angst, and so much sizzle I can barely stand it!!! She's good. THAT GOOD.

I adore her characters and the complexities they harbor, and even more, love watching them grow and morph throughout her books. She includes just enough outside distractions and peripheral issues that I just can't help but be glued and intensely invested while I'm reading anything MJ! Coriander and Dean were no exception. They jumped from the pages immediately, with their sincere and unconditional love for each other, even though it was just through friendship. What a great place for a book to begin... with protagonists that are already bound by pure respect and love for the other, just on a different level. Love, LOVE!

My favorite part of the entire book... without divulging spoilers... we're the 'happenings' at the elementary school playground. I too, was blind folded and taken to the playground of my elementary school on what would be one of the most memorable nights of my life. How crazy is that!!! The EXACT same experience, 14 years ago, with my hunny. For this very reason, The Boy Friend will always be a memorable, super duper special book in my eyes.

Well done Mika Jolie, I can hardly wait to see what you have in store next!

Are you in the mood for friends to lovers story? We all know that men and women unless either party isn't attracted to the opposite sex can't be friends. Sooner or later, the line will be crossed, and they will either go two ways - the first is the friends to a lover or the second is we are no longer friends route, which sucks. Lucky for me, my best friend is also my partner, and we started off dating then went the friend's route, and now we are together - this time for the foreseeable future. Friends to lovers stories are a favorite of mine, and Mika Jolie captured my interest one step further as her main character shared the same surname as myself. Ever since they were seven years old, Coriander aka Cori Phillips and Dean have been best friends. They have never viewed each other in a sexual way, so things have worked out great. That is until now when Cori mentions to Dean that since she is nearing thirty, she wants a baby. This somehow awakens something in Dean, and while Cori is out scouting the dating pool, Dean is getting jealous. How can he be jealous, he doesn't love Cori - his best friend or does he? We read through The Boy Friend as the pair keep denying their feelings for one another until one glorious night that leaves them both breathless and realizing that they have an undeniable sizzling chemistry between the both of them. The next morning though, will they shrug it off as a one-time thing or will they take their romance to the next level? Of course, you can guess what road happened next - the age old awkward phase where each party hurts the other by cutting contact. Can Dean and Cori finally admit to one another their love for each other or will it be too late with Meredith and Brandon waiting on the sidelines for a go with Dean and Cori?

Amazing! This is definitely a tried and true hit, written by a fantastic author! Ms. Jolie is one of my go to authors when I really want a good book. When I first read the blurb about this book I figured it would be your typical friends to lovers story. This was so much more. Cori and Dean have been best friends for more than 20 years. So, their transition "over the line" didn't happen quickly. What was more exciting in this book was the relationship between friends. Kate, Cam and Lucas, as well as Cori and Dean, are are tight not group if friends that definitely have each other's backs.

ARC Review: The Boy Friend by Mika Jolie

Adding Mika Jolie to my one click list is the best decision I've ever made. Her characters are irreplaceable, her humor is irresistible and her stories are unforgettable. Reading her stories is like becoming a part of something special. She has a way of making a reader just as central to the story as the characters. Her style allowed The Boy Friend to become more than just a friends to lovers spiel. Cori and Dean became real, not just a couple of names on a page, but an investment of heart that was as alluring, heartwarming and witty as any romantic comedy. From clueless to priceless, The Boy Friend is a treasure worth discovering.

A downright witty and erotic story about Dean, who had suddenly realized that he had been having outrageous thoughts about his best friend Cori, to whom he'd developed a huge attraction, is brilliantly told from a male POV.

How do you balance out having sinful thoughts and feelings for your best friend, wanting the relationship to be more, yet being hesitant because you are afraid that if you cross the line it might put your friendship in jeopardy?

Cori was genuinely sweet and uncomplicated while Dean was a charming manwhore; a mr-know- all; dishing out outrageous advice, that made me laughed so hard, I couldn't stop turning the pages.

The Boy Friend is sensuously hot and steamy and packed with humor. It was fresh and engaging with a lovable hero and heroine and a delightful group of secondary characters who helped to bring a realistic feel to the story and made it flowed smoothly and freely. If you are looking for for a funny, sexy and emotional roller coaster ride then Dean is the man for you... I meant, this is the book for you. I would definitely recommend this book because It has easily became one of my favorites.

Mika Jolie continues to grow. She is one of my favorite authors. Every time I've read one of her books, I'd felt like it's her best one yet and then I get to the next one and I'm doing it all over again. I can honestly say she's done it again. This is another one of her sizzling masterpiece. How will she ever be able top this one. I'm excited for what's to come.

Received an ARC at no cost to author on behalf of Enticement Journey Book Promotions..so we have a friends to lovers book. We meet Dean, and it is his POV that we are reading, and I have to say that at the beginning I was so not liking him. He was arrogant and another manwhore. He continuously kept saying that he had no feelings for Cori, that they were platonic friends. However when he sees her going on a date, his true feelings start coming out. Then he does an asshole move, I didn't get how Cori, forgave so soon, he needed to grovel more. You will like the rest of the crew, especially his sister.

There is an age-old argument that says men and women cannot be friends without crossing the line between friends and lovers. Dean Morello thought whoever came up which such an idea was dead wrong.

Dean’s best friend is a woman named Coriander (Cori) Phillips. They have been friends ever since the day he pulled her pigtails and her response was to punch him in the gut. Twenty-three years later their friendship is as strong as ever, but it is about to face its ultimate test. When Cori announced that she wanted a baby and everything that came with it, Dean knew then that things would never be the same if she is successful in finding the one who could fulfil her desires. It did not help that he found himself having sexual fantasies about her. However, that was one line he was not willing to cross and besides nothing is wrong with having fantasies. Cori is hot, so any red-blooded male would have fantasies about her. He, however, would start to view things differently the night they shared their first kiss. Will they explore this intense attraction and risk their friendship or will they deny their feelings to preserve the very thing they hold dear?

When a story has you laughing from the first page, you know you are in for a treat.
‘OKAY, HERE’S THE DEAL, I’m going to share my story with you. Let’s get a few things out of the way. There’s going to be sex. Some details might be a bit explicit. I curse like a motherfucker. The plot will be a little wonky and will not always follow some forced narrative. Sure, there will be conflict, climax, resolution . . . Bullshit, bullshit, bullshit. But don’t expect me to be a fucking Prince Charming. I’m the tall, dark, and handsome Casanova the nuns warned you about. Hearts will be broken. Tears will be shed. Friendship will be tested. Eventually, I’ll realize the mess I’m in isn’t fictional, and I’m the motherfucking star of my own story. With me so far? Okay. Grab a Pinot Grigio, a warm fuzzy blanket, and join me on this wild ride. Explicitly Yours, Dean Conrad Morello.’

With a beginning like that, who would not want to read more? I sure did. The story held me captive and putting it down proved difficult. The more I read, the more entrenched I became in the Dean’s and Cori’s relationship.

The story was told entirely from the Dean’s POV, which I found refreshing and realistic. Seeing everything unfold through his eyes and his reactions, as a result, made it easy to understand to relate to him. At first, he may come off as an unlikeable character due to his man whoring ways, but as the story progresses, his true nature, that of being a devoted and caring individual shines through. However, it would have been nice to get the story from Cori’s perspective as well. Because I only got Dean’s perspective, I never got a handle on how she actually felt.

I enjoyed the banter between the characters; it was fun, sexy heartbreaking and entertaining. The manner in which the author portrayed Dean's struggles with his feelings for Cori made the story seem that more authentic. In addition to the humorous interaction between the characters, I also enjoyed how the romance developed. It was well written and as a result, it made it easy to connect with Dean and Cori as a couple.

This is not my first time reading the author’s work. Therefore, I have some experience with her writing style, which is vivid, thereby making you feel like you are a part of the story. This story was no different. What I enjoyed most is the way the narration was executed. The author had the male protagonist speaking directly to the reader. Her writing had a great balance of wit, sass, and emotion.

I am not a fan of stories that are filled with unnecessary drama. Thankfully, this was not the case in this instance. It had the right amount of drama, humour and angst combine to make for an entertaining read. The pacing was perfect and I never had the chance to be bored. I kept flipping the pages as I was eager to discover how things between Dean and Cori would unfold.

Verdict
'The Boyfriend' is a great story with great characters and a beautiful storyline. If you are looking for a swoony, addictive romance with just the right balance between angst, heartbreak, and hilarity, with light-hearted banter, a sexy love story, then you need to try this book.

Mika does it again with her great book The Boy Friend. Every girl needs a Boy Friend. A friend of the male species to confide in, that always has her back, can give her advice on the male mind, and will do anything to make her happy.

This is written from the first person perspective (narrative) of Dean. He is a player, a horn dog, a mischief maker, but he is also a devoted friend, and has the hots for any thing with a pulse, and boy does he get what's coming to him in the form of his best friend Cori. She is a spit fire that keeps Dean on his toes. They have been BFF's since they were young and nothing can tear those two apart....or so we think. Who would have thought life could be so complicated.

This story was well written, greatly detailed, characters were engaging and easy to become engaged with and their dialogue was entertaining. There was heartbreak, deception, redemption, romance and a HEA. A few heart twinge moments along the way. I admit, Dean ticked me off through most of the book, which I loved!!! I love when a character makes me have an emotional response. It doesn't always have to be love for the character, it can be love to hate (or strongly dislike in this case at times). I was happy to see him get his HEA, but I loved seeing his struggle to get there! The sex was mildly steamy.

All in all, another fantastic book.

Would I recommend this book? Yes

Would I read more from this author? Yes

This friends-to-lovers story has me laughing my head off, swooning so hard, and bursting into tears at the tear-inducing parts!

Mika Jolie has the perfect way of creating lovable characters! Though I can see someone totally disliking Dean, I couldn't stop getting enough of him. I actually want more!
He redeems himself in such a natural way, a way in which he has always been himself and remains true. I loved his relationship with Coriander more than anything ever!! Whether they were friends or more. The dynamic between the two was sweet and hilarious, and just as hot.

Another thing that Mika does *so* well is create a background of awesome side characters. They were all taking part in this union between the friends and along the way, I couldn't help feeling like I was apart of this group!
P.s. I'm dying to know more of Kate and Lucas!!!!

If you're looking for a fun and heart-breakingly sweet friends-to-lovers story, with a couple of secret dishes and the reciting of the periodic table, then this is your book!

Wow! I am never disappointed when I read one of Mika Jolie's books! It's very rare that we get to be inside a man's head and read his thoughts. It's even better when that man starts looking at his female best friend in a different light. He can try all he wants, to say, "there's nothing going on between us", but everyone, including the said, "us", know differently. The only real problem is deciding what to do about his sudden interest in her. He may tell himself that he just wants to sleep with her, but deep down, he knows she's special. Again, what will he do about it? You'll have to read the whole book to find out. You may find yourself yelling at Dean quite a bit. You may want to throw your kindle at him. Don't give up on him, keep reading. Cori is special, and Dean is a guy, and guys have their own way of doing things. I can't wait to read more about this group of friends.

3.5 out of 4 stars

I received a copy of this story for an honest review for The Reading Room Blog.

Are you a fan of friends to lovers stories? Well The Boy Friend may be what you're looking for. Take one set of guy/girl besties who were happy in their platonic awesomeness until the girl makes the decision its was time to find Mr. Right and settle down.

What I Loved: Dean has a strong POV that is full of humor and just the right amount of raunch.Even when he bungled I still kept cheering for him. The story has a wonderful quick pace and I was able to complete in one sitting.

What I Didn't Love: As much as Dean professes the strength of his friendship for Cori and how much he cares for her, his actions had me scratching my head. Cori was such an interesting character I would have loved to see a little more of her perspective.

Favorite Quotes:

"Dean Conrad Morello, ending our friendship is not impossible. However, if I ever cut ties with you, it will be because you hand me the scissors, not because of a man. Do you get that?"

"I want Cori, I'm hungry for her. The realization makes my head spin and scorches my body from the inside out."

Happy reading.

Coriander “Cori” Phillips has been best friends with Dean since grade school. She has always been in the friendzone. They would be the perfect couple if they weren't best friends. He has checked her out a time or two, hello he is still a guy. She is his Moonchild, his better half, and his buddy. There's no secrets between so when she brings up it's time for her to find a husband and have kids he does what any best friend does and helps her screen them. Dean is the loyal friend, the person she runs to when everything goes bad, the only man she can trust. That is until the lines start to blur. He wants her, but he wants more he is just afraid. Can he save his friendship and convince Cori he wants more?

This is my first Mika Jolie book, and let me tell you she weaves a love story like no other. I loved how this was from Dean’s POV. I loved how he was talking to me. Not only that but i was able to see the inner turmoil he felt during the whole book. At the beginning of the book at the opening i was awe man Dean is just another super cocky male that loses the girl. But it's so much more than that. It's about best friends that have this super deep connection it's scary to not the outcome once those lines are blurred. I feel like Cori is Dean’s wild feminine side and Dean is her stuffy male side. I love that no matter what was thrown at them they stayed friends. Let me just that Cori is so uniquely beautiful.

I laughed at the banter between the best friends. My heart hurt while Dean was sorting out his feelings and Cori was dating. I just wanted to tie them up together till they opened their eyes. I cried with Cori and was so angry with Dean. I cried at their friendship with happy tears and sad tears. This was so much more than a love story. I can't wait to read more from Mika Jolie.
