How does a young lady of means escape her high society fate? By booking passage on the first ship to Africa and promptly tossing her petticoats overboard! Now Anna's trading London's luxuries and restrictions for the wild unknown. Of course, shedding her old life would be much easier without the disapproving looks of a handsome sea captain and the demons in her past haunting her from worlds away.
Scarlette Pike grew on the banks of the Virgin River in Southern Utah. After her fair share of wandering she realized that historical fiction had always been what she wanted. Following a desperate prayer and a simple idea, she began to write a historical fiction novel. She was drawn to African explorers David and Mary Livingstone and David's one and only convert: Chief Sechele. The mix of Victorian etiquette and African survival inspired her and she wrote "In Spite of Lions" in a tiny, tiny apartment in central freezing Utah. She plans on writing the sequel in a real grownup house with better heat.

It's been a great year for reading already and my streak of fabulous reads continues with Scarlette Pike's In Spite of Lions! My goal this year was to read more books set outside the US and UK and more books featuring Bad Ass Women and this book met both criteria.
In Spite of Lions will take you on a wonderful adventure from London to Africa. Our protagonist is running away from her life and boards a ship, not knowing what the ultimate destination is. Nor does she want to know. Despite the warnings, she is determined to make a new life for herself, on her own terms, in Africa. We learn more about her past and why she left London as the novel progresses, in flash backs and memories.
Pike's writing is exceptional. I thought that she did a fabulous job with the descriptions and setting, and the characters were fleshed out well. I loved our main Bad Ass Woman - she was tough and brave, and it was fun to see her break from social norms (and seeing the reactions to that).
I thoroughly enjoyed In Spite of Lions and I highly recommend it to fans of historical fiction, those interested in Africa, and readers of strong female leads.
The bonus of reading historical fiction (favorite genre) for me is that I always come away with more knowledge! Reading ‘In Spite of Lions’ by Scarlette Pike is no exception as her historical fiction novel took me, the reader, on an adventurous journey from London to Africa. Main character, Anna, crawled deep into my heart as she ‘escapes’ her domineering mother & her unhappy past. Family drama ‘on steroids’! Brava! Read it … plenty of discussion themes for book review clubs.

First off let me just say this is an absolutely gorgeous story that I highly recommend to any reader who wants to get lost within the pages of a fantastic story!
Anna is determined to leave the life she has known behind and if breaking with the protocols and expectations of society will aid her she will do it. Offering none her surname but rather her first name. By faith, Anna set out on her new life with her final destination unknown. Boarding a ship to an unknown destination was not what was to be expected of a young lady of Anna's social standing but she was determined.
And this journey led her to Mary Livingstone who with her two children was returning home and her husband David in the southern reaches of Africa. Unfortunately, the captain of the ship she boards knows Anna from her former life and she knows Captain Dunna as well and the knowledge benefits neither in their estimation of the other.
But despite the hardships of weeks aboard ship Anna is not dissuaded from the path of faith that she is following. Attaching herself to Mary Livingstone Anna soon finds herself traveling into Africa to Kolobeng to aid Mary and lodge with the Livingstone family.
Anna's journey will change her as she leaves behind the pain that has shaped her but one can never run from the memories that one carries... Anna will discover who she truly is and just how far she will go for those she loves.
In Spite of Lions will introduce the reader to a world only briefly touched upon in history books. The harshness and isolation of Africa in the 1840s and 1850s is both daunting and beautiful as seen through the glimpses one is offered in this book. But be forewarned there will be a sequel that one will most eagerly be awaiting.
In Spite of Lions is more than just a thrilling African adventure--it is an emotional Journey. Scarlette Pike phenomenally captures the human heart, historical tensions, and the vulnerability of life. If you want a fresh twist on the Victorian era without sacrificing authenticity, then you won't want to miss this gem!
In Spite of Lions is a story of a young woman who boards a ship to escape her abusive Mother. In the beginning, we're not given a lot of information except that Anna (as she directs everyone to call her) gives little spurts of information of what she is running away from-and she is literally running away from London's polite society. On the ship, she meets Mary Livingston (David's Livingston's wife) and their two young children, Robert and Agnes, who are a delight to Anna.
There is no understanding as to why Anna doesn't like Captain Dunna(of the ship they sail on to Africa), and why she has the knowledge that his name is actually Mr. Ashmore.
If you're at all familiar with David Livingston then you will know that Anna, Mary, Robert, and Agnes's destination point is in Africa. It is far removed from London's polite society. Despite the huge change in her living conditions, I found that Anna really tried hard to please (and adapt) Mary, and I was mystified by Mary's cold demeanor towards Anna.
David Livingston's only convert is Sechele who is portrayed as a man with a huge heart, and a penchant for dressing lavishly. He is the chief of the Bakwena tribe, and all of his people seem to really love and revere him.
A lot of the locals are wary of Anna and accuse her of being a baloi (witch), but this doesn't deter her in gaining their friendship, even though she is wary of all of the back-breaking work she does on behalf of Mary. But it didn't stop her from trying.
In Spite of Lions is an apt title because that is exactly what Anna battles. Literally, it is found that she has run away only to defend the local village from a Lion(and protect the children), and this is where the author reveals more of Anna's past. The Captain has shown up in the same village to take care of Anna after the Lion attacks her and stays to make sure she heals and that her wounds don't get infected. We find out why Anna says his name is actually Mr. Ashmore. It turns out that her name is really Catherine, and tells the Captain why she chose the name, Anna.
I found the ending a little confusing, but I did really enjoy this novel in spite of it.
I really liked the cover of this book. Unfortunately that’s about all I liked. I did like Anna and the captain. I didn’t realize this is the first in a series. The book ends with a cliff hanger. I’m not sure I’ll read the second book. This one was very depressing to me.
Snagged this book off of a featured shelf at the library - such a fun surprise of a read. Adventurous. Clean. And Heart-warming! I love to read a story where I want to put myself in the shoes of the main character!
I read In Spite of Lions first in 2017 and thoroughly enjoyed it. Now, it has not lost any of its impact, I enjoyed it even more! There were a few events I had forgotten or did not perceive priorly. This is truly a beautiful, well-written book.
Within the pages of this book, it points out the good and bad which exist in different cultures. The story also emphasizes the fact that prejudgment is often unfounded and detrimental. One can not know what occurs within the walls of another's home.
This novel is a poignant tale of escape, bravery, love, abuse, hardship, survival and interracial relationships.
The characters are very realistic and well-portrayed. The scenes are equally vivid and easily visualized. It is easy for the reader to become emotionally connected with the characters and events.
The book Title is left to the reader to determine the meaning. It is fairly easy to discover various ways the title depicts the book content. The Cover image is simple yet eye-catching. It is a good choice.
The only negative is the Epilogue. There is too much of an information gap between the last scene and the epilogue. It also has a weak lead into the next book. Still, the content is so captivating and excellent, I still offer a Five Stars rating.
This book is beautifully written! I love our protagonist. She is a fearsome lady, and makes some amazing decisions throughout the novel. This novel made me laugh, made me cry, and opened my eyes to things I hadn't ever thought of. Seriously, read this amazing Christian historical fiction novel.
This book is fantastic. I feel like this could be the next "Anna and the King". The ending was too abrupt for my liking, and it was a bit sappy at parts, but this book would have gotten 5 stars if not for that. Usually I wouldn't dock a star for that, but I don't know as I have ever come across a more abrupt ending. I will be reading book #2 for sure.
This is nothing like I thought it would be in the best way. Wow ! Page turner and beautifully written! Loved the characters and can’t wait to read the sequel.
Parts of this book were really well done and interesting, but other parts felt either kind of dry or hard to believe for the time period. I definitely liked the less common setting and the real characters woven into the story.
My favorite aspect of this novel is how beautifully the protagonist changes through her experiences. By the end of the book she is a different person and you love her even more having been with her on the journey. The environment she is in is engaging. The characters are rich and full of life. Since this is a historical fiction it is compelling to see the portrayals of these secondary characters who really existed. Through them I felt a deeper and broader understanding of humanity during this time period. I read it once, I'll be reading it again - which is high praise.
I’d give this 3.5. There were some parts I loved, and I was impressed by the strength and growth that Anna showed. The author was very descriptive.... but that was sometimes a detriment, because there were several times that I was waiting for the descriptions to get over with & for some action to happen. The last third or so was very interesting and with the cliffhanger ending, I’ll probably read book #2.
I did not love this book. The situations and backstory of two of the main characters seemed like it was created just to make this book happen, and the stories were just really convoluted. There were parts that definitely kind of dragged. The ending was incredibly abrupt, leading me to think there must be a sequel. Apparently there is, however, I will not be reading it.
I took much longer to get through this book than I expected, but that was largely because of the school year starting and my time to read being lessened.
The other reason I think it took longer is this book is much heavier than what I usually read. Not in the sense that it is difficult to understand. (On the contrary, Scarlette’s writing is very clean and straight forward. No superfluous descriptions or ridiculous similes.) The reason this book felt heavy was because, though I got more into the story near the end, I would feel the need to take breaks after each chapter to try to digest everything I’d read. There is a lot of emotion and hardship in this book and I would feel the need to ponder and process it all. On that note, I absolutely loved it! I think it is a brilliant piece! Much like watching a difficult documentary about the hard facts of a sad situation it feels like something everyone should read, if only to understand. I also loved how the characters developed. It’s actually hard to comprehend that it’s events are really all fictional because it feels so real and believable.
Also, though I did notice a few technical errors in the punctuation, and maybe two or three times when I would have chosen a different word for reasons grammatical, or for historical accuracy, this book has surprisingly few errors for a first time author’s first printed edition; and for me at least, these little mistakes did not distract me from the story enough to make it less enjoyable.
Well done, Scarlette Pike! I am anxious for the sequel!
"In Spite of Lions" is an absolute gem of a book that seamlessly weaves together fiction, history, romance, intrigue, and action, all set against the backdrop of the breathtaking African landscape. Scarlette Pike's masterful storytelling skills have left me emotionally moved and utterly captivated throughout this extraordinary journey.
The novel takes readers on an unforgettable adventure, where the characters come alive and the vivid descriptions transport you to the heart of Africa. Pike's attention to historical detail is commendable, painting a vivid picture of the struggles and triumphs faced by the people during that time.
The book is filled with unexpected twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. The intricate web of intrigue and suspense masterfully crafted by Pike adds an additional layer of excitement to the story, making it impossible to put the book down.
Without giving away any spoilers, one particular moment left me emotionally moved and in awe of Pike's ability to convey the depth of human emotions. It left me with tears in my eyes, and I couldn't help but applaud the author's talent for creating such a powerful and poignant scene.
This book is an absolute must-read for anyone who craves a captivating blend of history, romance, intrigue, and action. Scarlette Pike's exceptional storytelling, combined with her ability to evoke emotions, creates an unforgettable reading experience. This book will stay with you long after you've turned the final page, and I cannot recommend it enough. In fact, I’m off to order the sequel.
Okay I'm going to start by saying if you enjoy historical fictions with a strong traumatized protagonist, a small touch of romance (when I say small I mean it, there is so much more to this story then the romance, but it is there.) Then I highly recommend reading this story. It was an amazing tale of a strong women trying to live her life despite what her past had gave her. I loved the characters and the world within this story and look forward to reading the next book in the series. I am sad it took me this long to find this story and I am so happy I did. There was not a single moment in this story that I felt anything but excitement for what will come next for the characters in it. There was a few things within the story that shocked me because I didn't see it playing out that way. The only fault I have at the moment is not with the story but the fact that now I need to hunt the second book down so I can continue this amazing story.
When I first opened this book, I couldn’t put it down and finished it that same day. I love books like this that show progress and development of the main character and Pike nails it with her depiction of Anna. Before reading this book, all I knew about Dr. Livingstone was the famous quote of one of his colleagues “Dr. Livingstone I presume?” After reading In Spite of Lions, I had no idea what an amazing man he truly was. I found myself wanting to research and learn more about him. Love this book. Will definitely read again and will be one of those books I recommend to everyone. But seriously...when is the sequel coming out?! I’m dying!!
This scenes of this book have stayed with me, replaying in my head....think ahead to dinner tomorrow or there will be no dinner, running away doesn't always lead to bad places, do the right thing even when everyone says you are wrong. Good character development, good life learning, good plot twists and interesting people that keep you reading. I cried through most of the last half of this book (in a good way) and wish I could invite all the people over for dinner for a little more time together. When is the sequel coming out already???
The story parallels the life of Dr. David Livingstone and his family, a physician and missionary in Africa in the 1800’s. The Livingstone’s were the backbone of the plot, but the fun part was following the adventures (and nice little romance) of the main character, Anna. It took me a minute to figure out what was going on, but I couldn’t put it down at the end!
Pike has crafted a riveting masterpiece! Catherine Kensington flees her abusive mother and embarks on a journey that will forever change her. I was immediately immersed into the drama. This novel is engaging and thought provoking. I read it in one sitting.
Recommend to readers who enjoy inspiration fiction.
I love this book for so many reasons. I was so easily and quickly consumed in the story right from the start which isn’t always easy for me to do. I loved that for a book based in the Victorian era, the story line didn’t revolve around romance, but rather a brave woman taking charge of her own life and seeking freedom and adventure.. with a HINT of a possible romance that left me wanting more! But I especially loved that many of the characters were based off of real (and incredibly intriguing) people in history. I recommend this book 100%!
The beginning is slow and there is no ending. It just stops with few issues resolved. Parts of the story are excellent and introduce a compelling story. The main character is not likable, but improves greatly as the story progresses. I assume this book is part of a series.
I struggled with the two main characters at the beginning of the book, but they grew on me and I ended up really liking them by the end. I also liked the uncommon setting for a regency romance. I hope that this is a series, because that ending didn't really tie up loose ends.
