A little bit more messy than volume 1 but still enjoyable.

The main story which is 4 issues had Spider-Man trying his best to be a hero for his city. At the same time we have a Greek like mythology figure show up and help Spidy. But that help isn't always that helpful and eventually becomes a kidnapping situation Miguel has to diffuse.

The second half is Unlimited 2099 which is introducing Mutagen. Basically a man who now has the power to mutate his cells and body into anything to help fight back in a situation. This makes for a tough foe for Spidy but this story feels quickly thought-out. The character is cool but the plot gets wrapped up way to quick.

The annual gives a nice insight look into the crazy people that Miguel lives with. Especially the first major story really is messed up but works really well to show how far someone will go to "believe" in someone. Good stuff there.

Overall not as good but still enjoyable. Peter David's issues are mostly great. The Unlimited just decent. A 3.5 out of 5. I'll bump to a 4.

By all accounts, this was a pretty disappointing volume. I'll segment this review into three parts to reflect my thoughts on the three sets of issues within.
Firstly, the main series. This was okay at best. The story was an absolute nightmare to follow along with and promising characters introduced (e.g. Thanatos) ended up falling flat in my opinion. I know the story was intentionally confusing but even after everything was explained I was still lost.
The spin off stories, 2099 Unlimited, were surprisingly decent. Here we were introduced to Mutagen who has a lot of potential as a villain. The first and third issue containing him were highlights even though the third issue's art was horrible. Don't ask me about the second issue as I don't remember a thing about it.
Finally back to the main series for the first annual. The mainline Spider-Man series annual was 5* so I was quietly hopeful. It largely delivered. The first story showing how far a person will go for what and who they believe in was incredible and a really good stand alone story. It's a shame the rest of the annual was tedious filler.
I love Miguel more everyday and this series shows signs of brilliance. I'm hoping this is the lowest it falls.

Not horrible but not all that good. Basically the characters are cardboard and uninteresting. The world reads like an old version of the future. The writing and art and plot are fine just nothing special. And Miguel is just as cardboard as everyone else. The corporate dominated world is just a detail, it certainly doesn't feel real. The technology doesn't feel real. No good reason to read anymore of these.

Read this review or all of my reviews on my site!

Eugenics man? Lamarckism Guy?

Or Mutagen I suppose.

Bent on eradicating genetic diseases… somewhat directly. With the power to adapt quickly to any threat. Interesting enough villain!

Plus we get an issue or two each with SIEGE (Iron Man as a cop?) and Thanatos (certainly seems to believe himself to be anyways).

There’s a lot of chaos in this volume, but it’s enjoyable. I’m not a huge fan of the older style… and this has decades over the very beginning of comics. We’ll see where we go next. But for now, more Spider-Man!

Side note:

Convenient that.

Another great collection of Spider-Man 2099. Were this collection simply thework of PEter Daid, it would get a full 5 stars. Unfortunately, a large segment of this book is taken up by 2099 Unlimited stories and those were ... a bit clunky, unfortunately. It's hard to see where they fit into the overall continuity. This is a shame as the villain of Mutigen is actually interesting and I feel they could have done more with him.

Annual kiepski.

Where did all the character development go?? Where did Miguel’s hatred for Alchemax go??
Where did the drama that comes with Miguel wrestling with who is he now go?? Where did GABRI go??
Missing those key elements that worked in volume 1 is a bummer, but still vol. 2 remains fun because of interesting villains and Miguel being a smart aleck.

Spiderman has to contend with a new hero, and with the net prophet. There's some really good ideas here, and it is very readable. I like the AI that serves him, and how she is slowly gaining a personality. A good read.

The main stories by Peter David are, once again, excellent. The other material from 2099 Unlimited is okay, but not great. Splitting the difference for 3 stars.

Fossero tutte storie di David-Leonardi-Williamson il volume sarebbe da massimo dei voti. Peccato che i fill-in di altri autori siano di qualità inferiore. Rimane però un bel volume.

There's nothing glaringly bad about this comic. The most obvious blunder is, like the original Spider-Man actually, there's a sort of "harem" problem where the world seems to be populated by women who have romantic or sexual attraction to Miguel O'Hara or his alter ego. The developing one by his secretary/Siri is probably the strangest because it does not seem justified that only his program would do that. Is he the only one with a program?

While there aren't too many problems, there isn't too much to love about these either. The villains appear to be waaaaaay overpowered, which is certainly good for drama, but I think it's to the scale that I would not believe it when Spider-Man eventually triumphs (as I expect he would?)

A strange decision was made to include only the Spider-Man stories from the "2099 Unlimited" series but include the covers that indicate that Hulk 2099 is doing interesting things, especially because I don't believe there's a collection of Hulk 2099 in existence now or ever.

The David/Leonardi stories are uneven and unnecessarily tied up in a meaningless mystery of "Is this strange newcomer a classic Marvel character reborn?" Those pages would be better off used for building Miguel's world. David still adds a few good lines and character bits though, and Leonardi's a good storyteller, although his drawing style is a little loose for my tastes (Al Williamson's inks seem to help a little here, as compared to Leonardi's work on other titles that I've seen). Marvel really dropped the ball, in my opinion, with this collection by including three Spider-Man stories from a series titled "2099 Unlimited" by other creators. Those three chapters have no story impact and poor artwork.
++++++++
Reread this, still agree with the above. If anything, I find the Thanatos arc even more tedious now than I did when last I read it.

After the great first volume this one was a big disappointment. I wish I could simply attribute it to the poor 2099 Unlimited stories but even Peter David's work was not up to scratch. The whole Thanatos thing was just muddled and confusing (I knew it was bad when the first page of issue 13 agreed) and the pay off was non-existent. I'll do some research to see if things improve before I sign up for volume 3

Not nearly as good as the first collection.
The main story was great, as was the artwork, however the 2099 Unlimited issues were confusing and didn't follow the same timeline/plot. I was also hoping these would include the Hulk stories, but they did not.
The Annual, too, was unnecessary.
Overall, the main books are worth reading, but feel free to skip the Unlimited and Annual portions, as they don't add much.
Leonardi's work is spectacular, as is David's writing!

A Quickie Review

Comics legend Peter David continues his fun story of a futuristic Spidey. As usual, the artwork was great, and the stories were (mostly) fun. However, towards the end, some of the comics brought the volume down a bit, which may disappoint some fans. Hopefully, the next volume will bring back the magic of the first one.

Score: 4/5

Public library copy.

I'm a fan of Rick Leonardi and Peter David is a fine writer, but this work--by them--interrupted by others as well--wasn't very good.
