Vasily Mahanenko is a fantasy author working in the new genre of LitRPG - the MMO-based fantasy and sci fi. His Way of the Shaman series took Russian literature by storm in 2012.
Vasily dipped into his college-days insider knowledge as a hardcore gamer in order to create a believable world of the virtual-reality MMO game. His bestselling series combines fiction and video games, telling the story of Shaman and his friends stuck in the ruthless reality of Barliona. He used his more than ten years' experience as an ERP implementation project manager to approach his writing in a well-organized manner, working to a strict schedule, a set of deadlines and even a budget. At the moment, the series boasts six novels with the seventh one in the works - this time the author expands on stories of Shaman's companions and those who helped and supported him in his trials and tribulations.
The first book of the series has already been translated into English, with more translations to follow, aiming to make the Way of the Shaman series available to the English-language reader in its entirety.
Vasily's other passion is space exploration which is why he now works on a follow-up series entitled Galaktiona. Set in a space-simulator based world, the first book of the series in already finished while Vasily works on its sequel.
I went back and searched through books 1-5 and there's absolutely no mention of this group anywhere.
I bought the book after unsuccessfully waiting for the price to come down, after I kept reading how this explained and fixed everything that took place at the end of book 5. Maybe my version is screwed up or maybe I'm too dense but in no way does this even begin to redeem that aberration. If nothing else, it strengthens my idea that Mahanenko has no regard for his customers.
The ending of the last book was just utterly implausible. It simply didnt make sense and the readers of this series were left with a completely contrived and unsatisfying feeling. This short, expensive piece of garbage is one of two things: an act of utter incompetence in story telling, or (more likely) a truly reprehensible money grab unlike ive ever seen by an author.
I waited for the price to come down and broke down and bought this for three bucks-and its a rip-off at that price. Consider this: 20 pages for three dollars compared to just under 500 pages for six bucks.
I dont think ive ever given a one star review but after the treatment of this author to his fan base, i will not be reading any of his work again. This is not butt-hurt or a knee jerk reaction, and im not upset as i calmly write this. I just dont want to support authors that rip people off in such an obvious way. If you consider my words i would expect most people to agree with my logic. And if he screwed up the ending so bad that he basically needed to rewrite it, that should have been a free 20 pages not a separate cost.
I gave the author the benefit of the doubt and bought this nonsense hoping i could come up with some reason for why the author would do what he did. It sadly just confirmed the above.
These 22 pages contain mostly content that is already in book 5. The small fraction of new information is revealed in book 6. Reading that info here spoils book 6, or if you’ve already read book 6, it makes this revelation irrelevant.
The last book lost the whole series 1 star in my opinion. This fixes that. I just wish the author had included it. Also 3 bucks is a bit much for something so short.
Wow.... Well that sure explains a lot but who the hell are these New bad guys.... Man that's one way to rip out a guys heart... Can't wait for book 6 there relationship must work out...
Very interesting to read the ending of book, from another character's perspective. Despite it just being just a short snippet. A very quick, interesting read.
I'm giving this one star because this isn't a bonus or a side story, it's the ending to book 5 sold to you for an extra 3 bucks. I do not appreciate the finale being held ransom like some DLC for a mini - transaction. it's 20 pages that should have been stuck either at the end of book 5 or the beginning of book 6.
get the free sampler from the kindle shop and it'll provide you with what you need to know. do not encourage this kind of thing. How you feel about it depends on how hard the ending of that book hit you.
If you thought that ending was messed up then congratulations, this one will fix it and give you the disney ending you've wanted.
If like me you liked that cruel ending and thought it fitting then this will hint at the path the author had taken with the coming books... and it's not one you want to take with him.
“Hour of Pain” The Way of the Shaman, book 5.5 By Vasily Mahanenko
Summary: What we discover in “Hour of Pain” is not Anastaria the cold-hearted bitch who steals all that Mahan holds dear in-game and claims she never loved him to begin with-that it was all a ruse-at the very end of book 5 “The Karmadont Chess Set”, but a loving woman who’s devoted to both Mahan and her family’s clan.
A mysterious organization named “The Vecchi” has somehow infiltrated Barliona’s prison system and has hacked Mahan’s prisoner module to make him some rogue sleeper agent to bring down the Phoenix Clan. Unbeknownst to Mahan, they go about this plan by giving Mahan the “prescience” to unlock game-changing content and acquire unique item after another that no one else in the game has access to. Their ultimate goal is an item inside the Tomb of the Creator.
Anastaria catches wind of the Vecchi’s plans before the events of book 1 take place with Mahan and hatches a plan of her own to save Mahan and her clan. She too has experienced a strong premonition that Mahan is inherently good at heart, that he can be trusted, but considering all the forces working against him, Mahan must be steered and guided to the right path. Throughout this process that make up books 2-5, she actually falls in love with him too.
As the events of book 5 draw to a close, her master stroke is to give Mahan enough money so that he can pay for his release from prison, piss Mahan off so much that he’ll log out of the game, and thereby realize that he’s being held captive — not by the Barliona prison system, but by the Vecchi.
All of this is eventually explained in detail in book 6, and in a reasonably convincing way, one just needs to read book 6 and give this otherwise preposterous story a chance.
Critique: The entire narration felt flimsy, as if the author was trying to un-ruin his series with a farfetched story about a mysterious organization “The Vecchi” that hasn’t been mentioned a single time in the series to date. Only when I finished reading book 6 did this story in book 5.5 feel more plausible.
Plausibility: Now, despite the unbelievability of this story’s twist, I can’t discount it entirely. There has always been a cloud of mystery surrounding the reasons for Mahan’s misfortunes (as well as fortunes). Namely:
1. A mysterious “dev portal” opened for Mahan in book 1 1. The motives behind the woman, Marina, who duped Mahan into hacking the sanitation system in book 1, has never been revealed. 2. Marina has contacted Mahan in-game as her character “Mirida the Farsighted” in most of books in the series, to setup a meeting to come clean with Mahan. But, for whatever reason, Mahan has never actually met with her (claiming “the past is in the past” or some BS like that.) 3. In book 2, Mahan related a story in which he entered a hacking contest with his mentor to win prize money for who ever was successful at breaking into certain Barliona code. Mahan and his mentor won the contest, but his mentor took all the credit and then disappeared, never to speak to Mahan again. 4. In book 4, Mahan was released from his prison capsule for a short while to speak with a prison tech named James, who admits being the architect behind most of Mahan’s in-game exploits. James admits that whenever they want Mahan to discover something new, they turn off his consciousness for a time until the team can create the content Mahan wishes to uncover. Nothing more is said about James since then, such as who he is actually working for.
Yet in the final words at the end of the book, the author writes in a nonsensical statement for Anastaria that just leaves me with the sentiment that the author has NFC what he’s talking about.
“Goodbye, my love. I hope that you hate me bad enough to fall in love with me all over again. I won’t be able to bear it all otherwise.”
Conclusion: I’m a devoted reader of this series so I’m not stopping here but I am quite disappointed about the author’s change of direction and feel insulted by the attempt at steering it back on track.

The Hour of Pain is Book #5.5 in The Way of the Shaman Series by Vasily Mahanenko. It is an intriguing blend of LitRPG adventure, interesting characters, and immersive worldbuilding. Set in the virtual world of Barliona, the story follows Dmitry Mahan, a man sentenced to serve his prison term inside a hyper-realistic MMORPG. What begins as a punishment quickly transforms into a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and unexpected heroism. One of the series’ strongest points is its richly detailed game mechanics - from skill progression and crafting to combat and questing - which all felt very authentic, not at all gratuitous - and integral to the plot rather than just decorative. Mr. Mahanenko also balances these mechanics with emotional depth, showing how the character’s struggles in the game mirror his personal growth in real life. Each book brings new challenges, allies, and moral dilemmas. The humor is light but well-placed, and the camaraderie between characters feels genuine. While the series leans heavily into game-like logic, it never loses sight of the human element, making it appealing even to readers who aren’t hardcore gamers. If you enjoy immersive virtual worlds, clever problem-solving, and a protagonist who evolves from underdog to legend, then you will want to grab a copy and dive in. Happy Reading…
Jest to można powiedzieć “dodatek” do głównej fabuły. Książka albo raczej parę stron, przedstawiają perspektywę Anastariji, związaną z wątkiem znajdującym się w - Droga Szamana Etap 5. Szachy Karmadonta.
This short story is a must read for anyone following The Way of the Shaman series.
It is told from Stacy's point of view and fills in some serious gaps. But, like all the books in this series, it left with me with new questions and now I want to read Book 6 even more.
I've seen other readers complain that this was a separate story rather than included in Book 5 of the series ("The Karmadont Chess Set") and I have to agree that it really shouldn't have been it's own story. But, it isn't about paying for an extra short story.
The only reason I wanted this to be part of a full book is because I nearly missed reading it and it was just so absolutely integral in explaining what is going on!
Because it isn't numbered as Book 5.5 or anything similar, it wasn't showing up in a lot of the lists of this series. I only found it when I was trying to figure out why different readers had such wildly different reactions to Book 5 itself.
Again, if you like this series you must read this story!
this "short story" is more of a chapter that should have been at the end of book 5 than an actual story. the content is questionable in terms of quality (particularly the introduction of a shadowy figure) but it did enough to save the series for me so that I will read the next book when it becomes available.
Hour of Pain retells the events of book five's ending from Anastaria's point-of-view, giving context to things that'll be revealed fully in book six. There isn't much to say about a 22 page story. It's good to see Stacy's side of the story but the price point for this "book DLC" led me to knock stars off my review.
I have been avoiding this for months. Part 5 has truly fucked me up. I am honestly just numb to it all. Hopefully 6 will restore my feelings but right now I am still shook. If you aren't I have questions for you and your soul...
What an odd short story. It really smacks of an author who pissed off his readers with the ending of the last book and had to spill his beans quickly in order to have them return to the series.
It is a short story that I payed for because the ending of the previous installment of the series elicited such an emotional response from me I just had to have the explanation.
This short piece attempts to explain what happened in the previous book. It doesn't make me feel any better about what happened but at least I know why it happened.
