An undercover detective with a powerful edge. A play-it-safe, good-girl school teacher. Opposites attract in this fast-paced, sizzling romance.
After a messy breakup with a lying dirtbag, English teacher Mercy Jones swore off men. Completely. She has her students, plus her volunteer work at the Youth Center helping at-risk kids. She's. . . settled.
Until the new substitute teacher storms into her safe little life. He's challenging. Confident. The tall, forceful man pursues Mercy with breathtaking focus.
And why does that uncompromising masculinity have to be so very, very captivating? Soon Mercy's not only risking her vow to stay single, but also her heart.
Jaded from too many betrayals, Detective Aidan Shaw trusts nobody outside his family and fellow cops. When Aidan is working undercover to eradicate a high school drug network, his cynicism is shattered by an intelligent, feisty blonde. Mercy cares for her students. Willingly goes into battle for them.
Adorably stubborn, yet open-hearted and trusting, she's an enchanting complication he's unable to resist. And the way she feels in his arms? Holding her acts as a blowtorch to his icy self-control.
But how can Aidan remain undercover and not betray the woman he's come to cherish? He needs to catch the criminals. Fast. And he'll fight to keep the woman who's claimed his heart.
Note to Readers: Hero keeping a secret. Page-turning romance. Commanding, sometimes-growly, overprotective cop determined to catch the bad guys AND the adorable English Teacher. Smart heroine who refuses to make said "catching" easy for him. Heat level: Scorching. HEA guaranteed.
* This was initially a 29,000 word novella for a Box Set (of which all proceeds went to charity). The updated version has been expanded with new scenes.
Fiona Archer is an Aussie author who writes contemporary romance spiced with suspense. Her books feature sinfully commanding alpha heroes and the klutzy independent-minded women who own their hearts.
Her favorite hobbies include shopping for that ever-elusive perfect shade of lipstick and binge-watching Harvey Spector.
Don't get me wrong, I really do love a good undercover cop romance...BUT...I hate knowing that the lie will have to eventually come out. There's this little part of me squinting when the emotions escalate and feelings are involved. I know someone is going to get hurt. I can't help but think, how can you keep lying to someone you like? AND How can you forgive someone who can so easily lie to you?
Let's be real, most of the undercover cops in romance are the hero. Which means, that it's normally the heroine who feels betrayed and hurt. It's a bit emotional, there's going to be tears and there will have to be forgiveness, which may or may not happen pretty quickly. See, if the situation was reversed, all we'd get out of a hero betrayed is a clenched jaw and maybe a chair was thrown.
Am I right or am I right? In essence, we need the formula to stay the same because, while women can be very emotional, we can also forgive a lot more easily. I think men tend to hold a grudge and move on.
Sassy, the Queen of making HUGE generalisations.
So, In His Custody does follow along in the usual pattern of undercover cop romance. Not a bad thing to be honest. It's still pretty cool to see a "teacher" be all badass and bossy, with a smoking hot body and all the right moves. In this case, our copper/teacher is a wee bit kinky. Turns out, he likes to use his handcuffs off duty as well.
In His Custody was a short story that packed a punch. We have a mystery to solve that involves high school students and drugs. Plenty of twists and turns to lead me on a Merry chase.
If you're looking for a short story with a pretty good mystery and a fair dose of sexy times, then I would definitely suggest giving it a go. Bonus, you get to catch up with some of the gang from Fiona Archer's series, Son's of Sydney.

I knew Detective Aidan Shaw was going to give me a run for my money when I realized he was getting his own happily ever after. If you are familiar with Fiona's Sons of Sydney Series (which you should be because it's AMAZING), you will recognize Aidan as ONE OF London Shaw's brothers. London was the sassy heroine who brought Heath Justice to his knees in TEMPTING JUSTICE!
Detective Shaw has trust issues with outsiders, meaning he only trusts his family. Can you blame him when he's been undercover for so long? His latest assignment puts him in the same vicinity as English Teacher Mercy Jones, who of course, has sworn off men. When they meet, there is an instant attraction, despite their trust and relationship issues, they grow closer over the help they can give one another. But Aidan Shaw or 'Sean Gallagher' still has a job to do. Once he clears Mercy of any suspicion, his control snaps and he plans to get her under him ASAP. There's only one problem, Mercy thinks he is just a substitute History teacher and coach. What happens when she finds out the truth behind the man that she is quickly falling for?
IN HIS CUSTODY, book one in a brand new series by Fiona Archer, was a quick and sexy delight of a read. It was sexy, sweet, with just the right amount of suspense. Aidan Shaw and his ALPHA ways, made me smile the whole way through. Mercy Jones boldness and wit had me convinced that she was the perfect match for our hero. Together, these two were ON FIRE in and out of the bedroom. Fiona Archer always does ALPHA right and I can't wait to see what she brings us next!
I'm a huge fan of Fiona Archer's and I love her Sons of Sydney Series! The Shaw Brothers series is a spin off of the SOS series and it is starting out to be just as good! Aiden Shaw is an alpha, hot undercover officer who does't trust anyone except his family. Mercy Jones is a teacher who has sworn off men, she's caring, funny and smart.
Due to being undercover Aidan has to hide his true identity from Mercy, but nothing can hide the attraction and scorching chemistry between the two. Mercy tries to fight her attraction to Aidan but can't and soon looses her heart to the sexy detective. Danger comes at them in the form of a drug network in the High School and test the trust and love that has developed between Aidan and Mercy. I didn't have a clue who was guilty of distributing the drugs until the very end.
In His Custody is a short read, but it's not short on emotion, suspense, HOT sex, humor and love! Did I mention HOT SEX?!?! Fiona Archer is an auto buy for me and I highly recommend romance lovers give her a try!
In His Custody is well written with an introduction to the Shaw family which I can’t wait to read more about. Fantastic characters be it the main or the secondary characters. They are all likeable and I would like to read more about them all.
I enjoyed the plot immensely however what threw a spanner in the works was that Aidan lied. Yes, I know it was all undercover but still it rubbed me the wrong way.
Although Aidan is a good guy he is an alpha through and through and knows what he is doing. Well apart from teaching but he gets a handle on that as well. His first day is interesting when he bumps into the English teacher Mercy Jones.
Mercy is sweet and has a gentle nature. She has no idea that Aidan aka Sean Gallagher is looking into a drug problem at their school and that she is on the suspect list eventually she is removed but Aidan is already in too deep.
The chemistry between both Mercy and Aidan is hot as well as their banter and the feelings that they have for one another even if they both have a lot of demons in their past to overcome. I love that the plot didn't stem from those demons but from something else.
My one complaint is that Mercy was too forgiving. I unfortunately know how to hold a mean grudge and I expect the heroines of the book to do the same.
Ms. Archer’s writing style always hits the spot with the books that she writes for me every single time. I didn’t see the twist and turns here which I enjoyed.
4.5 Stars In his Custody is a quick fast paced read, I was hooked from the first page. Aiden Shaw is a cop who goes undercover as a history/sports teacher, his job is get to the bottom of a drug problem , it wasn't his job to fall for the sassy English teacher Mercy Jones. Mercy Jones is a woman getting over a messy breakup, she wasn't meant to fall for the sexy new teacher. Will Mercy be able to get past the lies Aiden had to tell just to do his job ...... This book has enough going on to keep you turning the pages, twists and turns, some seriously hot scenes in which we found out Aiden has many uses for his handcuffs but its also a love story with characters that have sizzling chemistry. I loved Aiden and Mercy and I really enjoyed catching up with some of the gang from Sons of Sydney, I will say you don't need to have read Sons of Sydney to enjoy In His Custody but I'm sure after meeting the gang you will want to add that series to your TBR. This quick read is a great start to a new series from the very talented Fiona Archer, Looking forward to more from the Shaw brothers.
Drugs, teenagers and high school, what could possibly make for a better romance? Oh wait let’s add in an under cover cop and a woman scorned by a liar.
Mercy Jones didn’t suffer fools lightly. In fact when she got burned, she was done. She poured herself into her students in a way that would make anyone proud. She was determined to help and to do all she could for these kids.
Aidan Shaw he wanted to help as well. The problem was he was back in high school for a case, the helping was just extra. So when he ran into a woman who set his pulse skyrocketing, he didn’t really think about why he was undercover, he thought typical male thoughts.
Together Mercy and Aidan were helping these kids but when the light shown their true identities would their shared experiences be enough to hold them together?
Ms. Archer has given her readers the first story with the Shaw family. She has shown her amazing ability to amplify her characters from the page to her reader’s imaginations. She toys with domination and gives you enough to tempt you, but not overwhelm. This is not a novel to be read at work, or on a break, but is certainly one that will keep you in anticipation for brother number two. Take a minute or some and pick this one up, well worth it. ☺
In His Custody by Fiona Archer is the first in her The Shaw Brothers series. It is a quick and sexy read with a touch of suspense. The novella originally appeared in a box set but has since been updated and expanded by the author.
I loved Mercy Jones. She was strong, feisty and determined. She was a teacher and put all her support behind her students. She believed in them and wanted more from them. Detective Aiden Shaw was very good at his job, but for once, his job was getting in the way. As an undercover detective, he is now acting as a teacher and assistant football coach. But he never saw Mercy Jones coming.
Aiden and Mercy were instantly attracted to each other, but Aiden has secrets he cannot share with Mercy. Even so, he cannot stay away from her. I loved Aiden, he was strong sexy, protective and a total alpha. He wants Mercy more than anything, but will she ever trust him when she finds out the truth?
This was a good, quick and sexy read. I liked the characters, the story and the suspense. I am looking forward to reading more from this author and this series.
Great news that Fiona Archer is continuing to entertain us with the Shaw family. After reading her novella in the Cuffed and Claimed box set and book 1 of her Sons of Sydney series, in the Tempting Justice I was hoping we'd get more Shaw family stories from this fabulous author.
This story centres around Aidan Shaw, aka Sean when undercover, a police officer who is trying to find out who supplied the drugs that seriously harmed a student. Mercy Jones is an English teacher at that school and their chemistry is sparked very quickly.
This is a true romance with a wonderful touch of suspense, some exciting twists and turns make you turn the page even faster. I enjoyed this fast paced story so much I could hardly put it down! It's an easy to read, feel good book that makes you crave more Fiona Archer.
The characters are easy to relate to and at times quite funny, which balances the element of danger beautifully. I'm already looking forward to the next book and totally recommend this to everyone, you don't have to have read prior books to enjoy this one.
This read I was immediately pulled into and did enjoy the detective, mysterious, suspense (that edge of your sit kind of read, intense), drama, romance, I loved it all. Such a quick fun read for me. I am new to Fiona, meeting all these great writers recently. Looking forward to her next read. such a page-turner. My go 2 reading is always a mystery, that is my 1st love. So when you add in romance, a bit of steam ... it is even a bigger plus. Mercy Jones is so so sassy. Lots of chemistry in the read. Wishing Fiona all the best! I love her style. ( ;
One hot undercover cop and a teacher with both attitude and compassion, together they burn up the pages in this fast paced story with just enough twists and turns to keep you guessing until the very last page. This author is now a must buy for me as she continues to surpass my expectations of a good read
I liked the plot of this story. An undercover cop, posing as a high school teacher to catch a drug dealer threatening students’ lives, falls for a fellow teacher. But will the lies he had to tell to remain undercover be too much to forgive?
However, like the first season of a new TV show, Fiona introduces so many new characters with their whole back story, it became hard to follow. How many brothers does he have? Oh, that one’s moving back into town? The next book’s probably about him, etc.
Also, there were so many references to Aidan/Sean being an “alpha” and “dominant” that it was a turn-off. Generally, the “alpha” simply shows his dominance but doesn’t feel the need to declare it first. Their first kiss was awkward, as were several of their steamy encounters.
Though too many were introduced at once, I do like the characters in this book. I was rooting for Aidan and Mercy.
4.5 Star Review In His Custody (The Shaw Brothers #1) by Fiona Archer
In His Custody was extremely well written and a pleasure to read. This is Mercy and Aidan’s (Sean) story; Aidan is working undercover as a history teacher at the school that Mercy teaches at. This book had passion, romance, mystery and intrigue and a truly alpha male. Aidan is determined to bring down the criminals selling and supplying drugs at the high school. Mercy is an extremely dedicated teacher, who although cautious of people would do anything to help her students. What will happen when Mercy finds out that the man she has fallen for has been lying to her?
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
Oh do I love Fiona’s brooding and alpha males. Aiden did not disappoint. I will say I was so glad that Aiden and Mercy were given a full novel. This story was originally a novella in a charity boxset. Well I guess we begged Fiona enough and she expanded the story for us greedy readers!
This is a great romantic suspense novel with a hint of some BDSM elements. Aiden is undercover looking for a bad kid who caused another student to overdose when he sees Miss Jones. She is the English teacher AKA The football coach’s nemesis.
Aiden and Mercy soon start a world wind courtship while Aiden is also trying to find out who the bad guy is. The plot twist for who is involved was great and I sure didn’t see it coming. The scenes banter had me laughing a lot.
I love the way that Fiona can write such a strong male but with a great sense of humor because hot and funny is a winning combo in my book!!
Fiona Archer is a new author to me and I'm so glad I decided to read In His Custody.
I loved the build-up right from the beginning, knowing there was something really deep going on at the school where Aiden was sent as an undercover cop. There was that bit of mystery that kept the story interesting.
I knew Aiden was going to hit it off with Mercy Jones, another teacher at the same school. Aside from him being undercover, the two were a lot alike and they both wanted to see the kids at the school succeed. Mercy was a very likable character and I felt bad that she'd had bad luck with her previous relationship. She really deserved someone good, someone like Aiden, and I thought the author did a great job with the scene where Mercy discovers that he's working undercover. There's always that bit of rockiness where you wonder how the one character is going to react when the other one discovers the truth.
I loved the author's writing style and thought she did really well describing the football games and all the activities that are a part of high school football programs. I'm also glad that there's going to be more books about the brothers! Great job!
In His Custody is the first title in the Shaw Brothers series. This was my first time reading anything written by Fiona Archer, but it definitely will not be my last.
Aidan Shaw is posing as Sean Gallagher to uncover who is responsible for the sale of drugs to high school students. He is kind, caring, compassionate and protective, and an alpha to boot with authoritative tendencies.
Mercy is a sweet, kind, and a tad sassy English teacher, she sees the best in others and goes out of her way to get the best from her students.
In His Custody although a quick read, is well written with twists and turns, and a touch of intrigue and suspense, that kept me completely captivated. The banter between Aidan and Mercy is fun and flirty and their attraction and chemistry is undeniable. There are several sexy, hot and steamy love scenes.
Overall a entertaining and engaging read, and I look forward to seeing more of the Shaw siblings in future titles.
This is the third book I’ve read by Fiona Archer and she’s quickly becoming a one click author for me. In this book we meet Mercy Jones, she’s an English Teacher who has sworn off men after her after a messy break up with her ex. We also meet Detective Aidan Shaw, he’s a tough guy, he doesn’t trust anyone who is outside of his family or the cops he works with. Aidan goes undercover, as a school teach trying to bust a high school drug network. Aidan and Mercy meet and there is an instant attraction there, she awakens things in Aidan that he though he had buried long ago. Mercy finds him to be dangerous and challenging but there is something about him that makes her want to risk her heart on him. How will Mercy react when she discovers who Aidan really is? Will the lies he’s told her cause major problems? What happens when they catch the bad guys? Or will love conquer all???? This is a fantastic read and one I thoroughly enjoyed.
I thought In his custody was a very intriguing , the blurb really drew me in while also have a hot cover I was sold . This would be my first read by Fiona Archer and it wont be my last because the storyline had me till the very end and a author that does that is one I want to read more of . With hot sex scenes , an undercover hottie with a big mhm gun , and sassy teacher who know how to handle a ruler this would be the book you don't want to miss . copy provided for honest review **************************************** hero=9 heroine= 9 Chemistry=9 steam=6 romance=6 humor=4 darkness level=3 action= 4 mystery=4 enjoyment= 9 angst=3 story line= 8 Story ending=8 character development=9 pacing= 9 cover= 9 stars= 4 author= 8 would I recommend this book=yes would I re read this book= yes would I read future books by this author= yes
A whole lotta mystery and love meant a great read!
This author is one of my favourites. Her characters and stories just click. I don’t know what magic happens, I just know it does and it means every new book is a must!
This story is an update and expansion from a previous version and I was thrilled it had more of all the things I love. The sparks between Mercy and Aidan were all fire and even though there was the little issue of him lying to her (for good reason of course!) I couldn’t help but get caught in the drama and the heat. She had been burned and was wary of trusting him and Aidan, well, he was cranky. Together, they simply worked and I was completely invested in each step of their courtship.
And a bonus. If you have read the Sons of Sydney series (which I have done repeatedly) you will be thrilled to see some familiar faces. I certainly was!
Aidan and Mercy make this story sizzle, I found myself going chapter to chapter desperate to know what happened next. Him a handsome, cunning, intelligent alpha male and she a spirited, strong, and smart female , what an amazing pairing. The hitch, she is a HS English teacher and he is an undercover cop trying to take down drug dealers dealing to kids. Surprise, she thinks he is a substitute teacher who also coaches the varsity football team. The pacing is perfect and I was able to envision every detail that I read so clearly it was like I was watching a movie in my head. The dialogue between them made me laugh out loud one moment then smile in satisfaction at the flirtatious comments, “deals” being made, and the sex scenes are scorching hot. Then bam the suspense, superb. In short I loved this story. 5/5 stars. Amazing. One click this book and you will not be sorry!!
First of all, if you haven’t read any of the Sons of Sydney books, I suggest you read them now. You won’t be disappointed. Why am I telling you this? I first came across the Shaw brothers when I read these books. At the time, I was in love with the sons of Sydney; now I’m falling in love with the Shaw brothers. Needless to say, this book had my (I wish it was undivided) attention from the first page. There were so many things about this book that appealed to me. I’m an ex-teacher so that was number one. Then when I realised that I already “knew” Aidan Shaw that was number two. Then the story sucked me in. The icing on the cake was the unpredictability. I loved the ending! BTW, even though I’m a blogger, I bought In His Custody because I loved this author’s writing. I gave In His Custody 5 shining stars. Written by Karen from A Thousand Lives Book Blog.
Fiona Archer has done it again with In His Custody. She has brought a story that will make your heart sing. Aiden Shaw is a man not meant to be ignored by looks or attitude.
"And a man that size—tall, with a muscular build emphasized by the snug fit of the football team’s white polo shirt—was hard to ignore in a bar, even one starting to get crowded."
He might have trust issues but that doesn't keep him away from Mercy Jones. Their story has intriguing twists and turns that kept me turning the page for more. I loved the trust and respect both Aiden and Mercy gave to high school students.
You have to read to find out how their story develops. Thank you, Fiona Archer, for another page turner.
Favorite quote (The book nerd in me couldn't resist): “Maybe I should just leave you guys to your sporting pursuits and not infect you with my nerdiness.”
This is a quick read into the lives of Aidan Shaw and Mercy Jones. Aidan is an undercover detective posing as a teacher/coach in the high school to search out who's dealing drugs. Mercy is the English teacher who wants what is best for her students. Their relationship starts off on one big lie though as she knows him as Sean. This leads to a few twists in this story. I liked all the twists that came along with the drug storyline as well. It will keep the reader guessing right up until the end about who is responsible. Bonus in this story is that we have met some of the characters in other books by this author. Looking forward to seeing more of this family.
*Please note that this is an expanded version from a novella from an already published anthology.
Aidan is working undercover at Mercy's school as a teacher to try to get a handle on a drug ring in the school. Seriously where was he when I took Civics in high school??!! Working with Mercy to help a student pass her English class so the student will stay academically eligible to play sports, in return he is helping a child in need off a good influence. Swoon!!! Will Aidan be able to help save the school from the drug ring, the students from a the dealer and Mercy from falling into the hands of a bad man?
SOA introduced Aidan to me and I am so glad. I can't wait for more!!!!
I received an Advance Reader Copy in return for an honest review and honestly.....SERIOUSLY I would have paid much more in class if he had been my teacher!!!
Wow...Aidan and Mercy's story was AMAZEBALLS! Full of heart melting romance, plenty of action, heart pumping suspense and fantastic characters, this is a book to love!
Fiona Archer brings us a story about a sexy detective who is undercover and meets a sassy woman who gives him a run for his money. I found myself enthralled with the plot and digging deep and enjoying every moment of the story as it unravels. I loved the pace that was set and the characters just stole my breath and my heart. The sex was SCORCHING and the romance so darn irresistible.
In His Custody gets a FANFREAKINGTASTIC FIVE SHOOTING STARS! I am really enjoying these books by Fiona Archer.
I got hooked on Fiona Archer from the Sons of Sydney series, and thank god I did! The Shaw brothers are introduced in SoS2, but this read predates those events. In His Custody is another smart, well written, engaging story with loads of Alpha males, a bit of bdsm (lower case intended) and enough suspense to keep you from not wanting to put this read down. Mercy and Aiden may seem ill-matched, both with a past that should keep them apart. But what about opposites attract isn't great! The sweet school teacher with a serious naughty streak and the brooding cop who has a weakness for sweets? There are a lot of secondary characters to keep track of, but that doesn't detract for what is happening here. Not overdone, this story feels natural. I can't wait for more Shaw brothers!
The first book in a new series by Fiona Archer. If you have read the Sons of Sydney books, you might recognize a few characters, but if you haven’t fear not. You can read it as a standalone without any problems. You won’t miss any background.
I enjoyed this book a lot. Mercy was a wonderful character, she was smart, sweet and very invested in her students. She would do anything to help them out. She really cares about people.
Aiden was one hot guy, but like Mercy also very invested in helping people. And i like how he interacted with the kids. While he loves his job, he hated lying to Mercy about who he truly was.
I loved their relationship and how they just did normal everyday things and enjoying.
This is another great read by this author. While it may be a shorter book, it does not read as much. The author has put a lot into the book – there is a hot and steamy romance, mystery, and an HEA. Aiden and Mercy have an instant connection and that becomes apparent very quickly into the book. Trust is an overarching theme in this book with all characters. Mercy who has been hurt in the past takes a leap of faith when she starts seeing Aiden. Aiden is at Mercy’s school but is not who he claims to be. As they story develops, the mystery and suspense as to why he is at the school grows. And it all comes down to trust. There is a lot packed into this short read. Very enjoyable! Cannot wait to read more about the Aiden’s brothers!
This is my first time reading a book from this author and I loved her work! A hot, alpha undercover detective meets a strong, feisty teacher recovery from a messy breakup and boy do the sparks fly! Aiden Shaw is given the task of going undercover as a teacher at a high school to breakup a drug rink where he meets the gorgeous, sassy Mercy Jones. The chemistry is instantaneous. Mercy has already been burned before by lies; will she forgive Aiden once his cover is revealed? Not only is the romance a hot, sexy read, but I was literally biting my nails trying to figure out who was behind the drug ring. This was a definite page-turner and I look forward to reading more from this author.
OH MY, you're really in for an exhilarating ride with this amazing book! Aiden is just too sexy for words, or maybe it's just because I've always had a soft spot for cops like my husband. His relationship with Mercy is beyond complicated; his undercover status weaves a web of lies that we know Mercy is eventually going to have to be OK with. The high school setting is done so well we are reminded why we both hated and loved those days, and there's just enough action and suspense to make the story believable. I loved, loved, loved this book and can't wait to read more by this author. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
