London Stories #2

Liam for Hire

Rate this book
Liam Murphy has kicked his drug habit and now pays for the high living costs in London as an escort. His life is finally in balance. His only problem is that he obsesses about the minimum number of times he has to bend over to make ends meet. As long as he has his emotions under control, it’ll be fine. That’s what Liam keeps telling himself until he meets the young widower Alastair, also known as Ali, whose emerald eyes remind him of Ireland.

“I...I want us to have sex as though we’re making love.”

Making love? Jaysus.

I scratch my head. “Okay. You mean more kisses and shit?”

Ali laughs.

“And shit.” His face lights up and he looks about ten years younger. “Like cuddles.”

Featuring Liam from The Boy Who Fell to Earth. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3...

Wonderful written journey, it did hold my attention more than 100%, it’s harsh... I’m still digesting... it’s so worth reading!

I could tell a lot about this journey... but I really think you should read it yourself.
I could tell how down spiral Liam’s life was going, how he hardly survived, that he found help and rent himself for money so he could allowed himself a room with a bed to sleep in.
I could tell how he was meeting his next john Ali, dear, warm, considerate Ali who made Liam’s life a bit better. Ali who asked if Liam could have sex with him as if they were making love. Ali who loves and supports Liam unconditionally.
I could tell how Liam tells us about his past and how he become where he is now.
I could tell how he tries so hard to survive, how we can see in his head and read how he thinks and thinks and thinks. I could tell how wonderful and strong he is, with a beautiful personality and that there are people like Chris, Sasha and Ali who cares for him even he can’t feel or see it himself. I could tell how throughout the whole story I felt apprehensive.... just like Liam.. and how I wonder if it ever will be alright.
I also could tell how he finally gets some solid ground under his feet and with all the love from Ali they both get a future together.
But I really think you should read whole Liam’s journey yourself.

I read ‘the Boy who Fell to Earth’ which is Sasha’s story. Liam had a role in that story...
I had to know how Liam’s life was going and was not disappointed. ‘Liam for Hire’ is such a captivating story, amazingly written with beautiful structured sentences, it makes us a spectator but let us also feel all the emotions.

Highly recommended

I bought this one already but also kindly received an arc from the publisher <3

FYI: I have not read "The Boy Who Fell to Earth" where Liam is introduced, but felt this novel worked very well as a stand-alone.

Liam leaves his Irish farm at age 16 and ends up in London where he picks up a helluva drug addiction, lives on the streets and sells his body to make ends meet. At age 21, Liam is a survivor with few delusions about human nature as he struggles daily to not relapse. He works as an escort, striving to protect his emotions while earning enough to pay for his share of a shared bedsit.

And then he meets Ali (short for Alastair) - 40+, widowed, and newly come to terms with being gay. Ali wants a tutor in the ways of man sex, but wants to make love, not merely have sex. Ali is heartsick about his wife dying without knowing he is gay, but realizes that he did the absolute best he could in their relationship. He's learned to cherish people and when he gives his heart, he gives his all.

Zukowski's writing style took a while to really settle in for me, and at first it seems like more "telling" than "showing," but there is a power in this writing that sets out basic details which slowly combine to form such powerful emotions. This creates such a strong sense of being really invested in the story and characters that some of the plot points - which may have seemed manufactured or sensational with another author - worked together beautifully here.

The sexual chemistry between the two men is sizzling hot but the emotional chemistry is equally as important as Liam and Ali find a deep and sustaining love. There are few tangents and subplots here, with most of the focus firmly on Ali and Liam, yet the pace never felt slow but was instead very compelling.

I loved the ending of this story and the redemption each man finds, not without some very big struggles along the way. For example, Ali didn't make his love for Liam conditional, i.e. "stop escorting now that we're together." He doesn't shame Liam and try to make the decision for him. I'm a newcomer to A. Zukowski and I really look forward to reading more by this author. "Liam for Hire" is a very touching read and I give it 4.5 stars.

Second chances. I believe in them. I relish in their success. This book is about second chances; another go at life. But in all honesty, this story was a soaring second chance for me. I was grateful for the opportunity to experience it but I struggled with the first chapter. I’m not entirely sure what it was that discouraged me but…I set it aside. Thankfully, I came back to it. Perhaps it was due to the fact that I haven’t read The Boy Who Fell to Earth….yet. Maybe I expected something else? Whatever it was, it didn’t click straight away. A friend encouraged me to continue and barely a few pages further into my second attempt, I was hooked. I yearned for Liam to have peace. I longed for Ali to find his elusive contentment. I was desperate for them to find happiness…together. *spoiler* All my wishes were granted. Zukowski takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions and I’m very much looking forward to my next rendezvous in London.

What's to like: Bold writing takes us on an unabashed journey. As we get to know Liam I couldn’t help but respect him. He is honest, to a fault at times, but it’s clear early on that Liam is genuine through and through. He’s hit rock bottom before and is well aware of the turbulence life can bring. Selling his body, succumbing to the iron grip of drugs, and finding himself without a place to call home are only a few of the hurdles he’s overcome. In spite of any perceived weaknesses, he stands firm and resolute. Deep down he falls victim to self-doubt and judgment. *sigh* But then Alastair comes into his life. And well, everything changes.

What's to love: Actually, only one thing changes. Liam is loved. Deeply and unconditionally. This is a first for him and he’s struggling to find balance and acceptance with this…gift. He may have loved before. He might have thought he was loved in return. As it turns out, not a single soul saw him, knew him, and truly loved him before Ali. As soon as we meet Ali, I felt the shift in the story. I tripped over my fingers and couldn’t read fast enough. Ali is special and stole my heart at once. Ali is shouldering his own demons. His ‘coming of age’ and sexual revelation was later in life. He was married…to a woman. He lost his wife and grief and guilt are suffocating him. Until Liam. Liam is a fresh breath of air. Liam brings light to the darkness. Liam is everything he never knew he wanted. But now he knows. Ali wants to show Liam, prove to him that he is significant. No. He’s extraordinary. So is their story. And if you dare take a chance on them, I presume you’ll find the same.

Beware of: A sexual discovery directed by a sex worker. Prominent age difference that is completely unimportant. Drug addiction relapse.
And a love so bright, it will blind you.

This book is for: My advice to you is this: give this story a chance, don’t give up, and you might want to start at the beginning. I’m headed there soon…I’ll be sure to let you know how I get along with Sasha and his own true love.

I remember being so intrigued by Liam when I read The Boy Who Fell to Earth. There was something about him that just made me want to know more of his story and I’m so glad I got the opportunity to know him better in this book. I loved him. I liked the book a lot, even more than its predecessor and I think it was because of him. He was a lovely character.

I had a good time reading it. The plot is a little more complex than its blurb let us know, which was good because I love having surprises while reading. The warnings might give something away but I think they are necessary. It is a little slow-paced but I still enjoy it a lot.

What I liked the most about it was Liam. His thoughts, the conflicts he was facing, everything about him. It is hard to say much about what I liked about him without giving spoilers. It might have something to do with the fact that he had so much struggles in life and he kept fighting. He had a lot of regrets but he didn’t allow anything to stop him. I also like how charming he was.

Ali was a nice character but I couldn’t love him as much as Liam. I liked their relationship. I liked the fact that it took them a little while to get to a place where I could feel there was true emotions. I’m not really a fan of big age gaps which make so interesting to see how much into their relationship I was. I loved them together. I don’t think it was too romantic, I was even underwhelmed by the sex scenes that felt a little rushed, but I did loved them as a couple and ended up thinking they were so perfect for each-other.

I really liked it. I had some few issues about it but there were minor that didn’t disturbed my overall emotion about the book. I recommend, again, to read the warnings because there are some scenes that might not be suitable for every reader, but overall it was a great book.

This is the story from Liam Murphy who first appears in The Boy Who Fell to Earth https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/3.... Liam is young and messed up in The Boy but he's an absolute sweetie in this one and he meets the equally fluffy Ali. After finishing the angst-filled novel, I wanted to write something really light. So I opted for Liam because despite all his flaws, I liked him. The first draft of the novella only took two days because his voice came to me easily. I guess I was thinking of the boys in Cork. You know who you are, my Village People.
This was meant to be a sweet summer read but as always I got carried away. The novella is still a bit angsty but nowhere near the slit-your-wrists stuff I normally write. There's also a healthy dose of humour.
Update in October 2017: Still writing! I really hope to have a decent draft for beta, and publication in the new year. :)
End of Feb 2018: Finally, I've finished Liam's story. It's no longer 'the little something' I was going to write quickly, just for fun. It's far from fun, in fact. I simply couldn't get away from being utterly absorbed into the emotions of my characters. Sure, my rather dry humour (sorry) comes through in places, but it's pretty intense otherwise. Have I said there's love? Quite a bit of it, in fact. Out end of the summer. Phew! ^_^

I was intrigued after meeting Liam in The Boy Who Fell From Earth and I was excited to see he’d be getting his own story. I wasn’t disappointed, while not as gritty and raw as the first book, this was still an emotional read.

I loved Ali, but I completely fell in love with Liam. Together they fit and had amazing chemistry. I loved that both men finally found the acceptance and love they’d both been searching and longing for for for so long.

A well-written and captivating read. Very enjoyable and recommendable!

It is a great story!

It is second book in "London Stories" but it can be read as a standalone. It is a great love story but mostly it is a story about Liam, a young boy/man, who run away from his homophobic family and small Irish village, a boy who was homeless drug addict, an escort who won a battle with addiction and finally a strong young man who found peace and happiness.

It was a difficult and emotional book, I couldn't stop reading it and in the same time it was killing me to see Liam struggling with lack of money, brutal johns and loneliness. He was lost and hollow.

I have to admit I am not a fan of HUGE age difference between MCs in love stories but it worked out for me this time. Relationship between Liam and Ali seemed okay, they needed each other.
I liked all characters in this book (apart from Liam's brother and father but that's obvious), I can't wait to read Chris' story.

In Liam for Hire, A. Zukowski gets readers to fall in love with a man who is so lifeless, he borders on boring. Featuring Liam from The Boy Who Fell to Earth, the novel is a standalone edition.

While Liam overcame addiction and homelessness with the help of a fellow escort, he lives one “john” at a time. “My bedsit and the job are like a hamster’s cage, giving me temporary shelter, but making me go round and round in circles,” he narrates.

For example, though Liam once relished the flute and sold his on the streets, he hasn’t even allowed himself to replace it. Instead, he varies between numb indifference and guilt towards those he believes he’s let down, especially Sasha, who once lived on the streets with him.

After a lifetime spent hiding, Liam can’t fathom a soul as gentle, forthright, and caring, as Ali (Alastair), a new customer. Ali only discovered his attraction to men shortly before his wife contracted cancer, and hasn’t acted on his impulses. Liam isn’t aware he was hired to initiate Ali into gay sex.

In an odd way, Ali relates to Liam. He knows guilt all too well. He hadn’t been honest before his wife’s death, hadn’t explained it was his fault their marriage was lackluster.

Although Liam can sense Ali’s genuine attraction, he’s sure no one would want him, an escort and addict teetering on relapse, especially not Ali, who is successful, twice Liam’s age, and squeaky clean. Meanwhile, Ali wonders why anyone with youth and expertise would be attracted to a socially isolated, inexperienced, middle-aged man. Two men, unable to see themselves as others can – but can they truly see each other?

Liam narrates his story in present tense. I can’t think of a better way to introduce a young man who lives in the moment – because he doesn’t believe he is worth anything, not even a future. In fact, the only reason he calculates the number of customers he must see, is to pay his way with his flatmates, an independence of spirit Ali finds irresistible.

Zukowski’s language is pure poetry. Note how Liam describes his feelings towards Ireland to Ali. “’I miss the stars and the inky nights. Sometimes I think I can smell the seaweed on damp sand and hear the sound of the waves on Inch Beach if I close my eyes. I yearn for the thunderstorms and the crystal dews clinging to long grass. I want to hear the tunes played on a bodhran and the low notes from the clarsach.’”

And Zukoswki presents emotional pain with stark empathy, like when Liam recalls the breakup with his first love. “It stings to remember that mossy evening in deep winter… The chill in the fresh air always seeped into your bones. The grass wore a beautiful white dusting of frost. I’d hoped that something so pure remained between Cillian and me…. I bawled like an impetuous child and called him every name under the sun, my voice breaking, shattering any trust I had about love.”

Despite Liam’s path of rejection, self-abuse, and lost identity, Zukowski manages to prove how anyone can retain a small, cherished piece of dignity and innocence in our souls. The author portrays the lives of escorts in such a tenderly nuanced manner, readers must examine and release any preconceived notions we’ve held.

Can a burned-out rent boy return to life and truly open his heart once more? Read Liam for Hire to find out. It’s a sensual, spiritual journey well-worth travelling. I feel towards Zukowski the same way Liam thinks of Ali. “The gentleness he’s showing me will kill me. My weariness disappears under his ministrations.”

3.5 stars.

This was my first book by this author, read and reviewed upon request.

I liked it for the most part. The tropes used are not new, but the age-gap, baby-gay, and falling-for-your-escort themes worked for me. Ali, the older of the two Mcs is at mid-forty nearly 25 years older than Liam (he of the title), when he hires Liam to teach him about gay sex.

See, Ali (short for Alastair) has been married, and his late wife never knew that he was gay. It's obviously something that Ali has suppressed for a long time, and he's only recently realized his true sexuality.

Liam, having left Ireland and his farmhouse home at 16, makes his living as an escort in pricey London after having kicked his drug habit. He rents a room in a shared flat, and still struggles not to relapse into addiction. When Ali hires him, he's initially somewhat taken aback at Ali's request that they "make love" instead of simply having sex. But hey, money is money, and rent needs paying, so Liam gives Ali what he's asking for.

I like that the author didn't flinch at showing the reader what's going on in Liam's head and Ali's head. Their struggles, individual and specific as they may be, felt realistic and believable. While this book isn't full of drama, there is enough of it to earn itself that shelf - for both Liam and Ali.

The sexy times were, while plentiful for me, not gratuitous. Obviously, there is sex in this book. Liam is an escort, and Ali hires him for sex, however the author made a point that Liam realizes early on that sex with Ali isn't just sex.

I liked Ali a lot. I liked Liam too. Ali is a nice guy. Even as he and Liam deepen their relationship, there is never any pressure from Ali for Liam to quit escorting. He respects Liam's means of income, and never makes him feel cheap or trashy for earning his living that way. And I think that had a lot to do with Liam beginning to trust Ali more and more, and start to believe that maybe they have a chance of making things last.

This was a good book. I enjoyed reading it, and I think you would too. I'm definitely willing to check out more of what A. Zukowski has written.

What a Journey!

Liam for Hire is Liam's story...it's the tale of Liam's fight and struggles to leave drugs and the streets; to make a life for himself; to rediscover his worth and to find someone he loves, who accepts him and loves him back.

I'll be honest and confess that I expected this book to be just focused on a sexual relationship (having an Escort and an older "John" in it) and to not be as emotional or have such a strong love relationship as the 1st book: The Boy Who Fell to Earth had...

I was so wrong! The love here is mature, but it’s strong, it's sweet, loving, accepting and healing... It's True and absolutely Beautiful!

I honestly wasn't expecting to love Ali this much! He totally stole my heart and him and Liam were really perfect together.

Liam and Ali really belong to each other, they were made to be together! They so complement and heal each other...

You can not help but root for Liam here... And you can't help but love Ali, too.

This book is a Beautiful and Emotional Journey! I enjoyed it way more than I was expecting to and I definitely Recommend it.

And I Will definitely be looking into book#3 about Chris and Alex, when it comes out :)

ME NE SONO INNAMORATA!

Such an emotional and heartbreaking read yet so freaking sweet.

Liam is a drug addict, homeless, then eventually and an escort. He has been in and out of rehab and trying to make ends to meet and like many homeless ex-drug addicts with nothing to his name, he turned to sex working.

He meets Ali through an appointment. Ali was rich and half his age and just discovered his sexuality. Liam thought would be his usual trick, but he wasn’t prepared for Ali’s sweet gentle nature slowly chipped away his defenses and he started to have feelings.

This book was definitely a HEA but it wasn’t easy to reach this point. Liam struggled more than once, not just with addiction but with his family, past, and self worth. It was not just romance but also a story about climbing out of rock bottom and finding yourself again.

This story first ripped my heart out and then near the end put it back into my chest cavity.
I wanted to bring Liam home and drive him daily to the nearest drug and alcohol place for his recovery....Feed him too. What happened to him made me cry!
The author then brought Ali into the plot. Ali is adorable, sexy, loving and a bit of an old-fashioned man who was perfect for Liam!
This story was dark enough for me to become emotional but romantic enough to fill me with fuzzy feelings at the end. All in all, "Liam For Hire" is a very emotional, deep, and meaningful story with a beautiful end.
As a big fan of A. Zukowski, I highly recommend this book.

description

Liam is a junkie and an escort boy. After an OD, Liam decides to take back his life, but when you’re homeless without any family who supports you, the options are limited. Liam began as an escort boy. For 18 months, Liam counts his clients in order to pay his rent, fifteen that’s the number of tricks he has to do to pay his rent. Until Alistair. He wants Liam, not the escort boy, just Liam.

Is it possible? Can a junkie in recovery who sells his body for a living find love? That’s what Liam will have to find out while trying to figure out how to live his life without drugs and tricks.
“Liam For Hire” by A.Zukowski features Liam from The boy who fell to earth. It can be read as a standalone. It was my first book by the author, but won’t be my last.

I didn’t know what to expect from this book, well, no I lied, I expected a gay modern version of Pretty Woman, with Liam as Julia Roberts and Alistair as Richards Gere. That’s what I expected, and it wasn’t what I had. It was better, beautiful, and profound. I loved this book.

Liam had a shitty life, but that’s an understatement. I didn’t read (yet) The boy who fell to earth, so I don’t know exactly how Liam was in this book, but we have a glimpse of his past, his guilt, what he’d been through, and he broke my heart. He had an awful life, and he’s only 22 years old when the book starts, for 4 years he was literally in hell. When he met Alistair, Liam couldn’t believe that a man like him wanted a boy like him. He tries to push Ali away, but it almost destroys him.

Alistair is a widower, who at 45 years old decides to experiment with his sexuality. He knew he was gay but never act on it. He was married and too scared to come out to his wife. When she passed away, Alistair decides to experiment and hire an escort boy, Liam. Their age gap wasn’t a problem for them, Liam may have only been 22 years old, but what he’d been through gave him maturity sooner than other kids of his age. Their connection is automatic, and they fit perfectly together, but Ali will have to fight hard to prove to Liam that he’s serious and wants him.

The story is told from Liam’s Pov and it was very well written. We were deep inside his thoughts, fears, traumatic memeories and hope. It wasn’t simple to read, and I may have had some tears during my read. Liam is a tortured soul, and the author shows us this perfectly.
This book was full of feelings, good and bad, but never forced. The author wrote it with sobriety, it wasn’t too much or not enough, it wasn’t forced on us. I liked it. I liked how the author wrote it and tackled those difficult topics.

I completely loved and melted for this book and the characters. I will read the next book about Chris, and I just bought The boy who fell to earth.

5 OptimuMM for the Geek and his Flutist

***I would like to thank the author for the privilege and opportunity of reading this ARC. My review is an honest opinion of the book ***

You know when you read a book, one of those that leaves a lasting impression and the story is so heartbreakingly real that you feel guilty for having loved every word? That was how I felt when I read 'The Boy Who Fell To Earth'. As I often find with these books, there are featured characters, that you just know also have a tale to tell, and for me that was Liam. I was so pleased to get the chance to hear his story.

Life after Sasha hasn't been easy. They weren't a couple in the traditional sense but they were a team who were both good and bad for each other but Sasha fell in love and Liam? well, he continued to sleep rough and sell his body for drugs.

Having finally hit rock bottom he gets himself kinda clean, gets a room in a shared flat and continues to sell himself just to make ends meet. He's fairly safe most of the time, he works through an agency and has his regular 'clients' and that is all they are. No feelings, it's just a means to an end, or at least it was. A new client requests his services and Liam goes to the strangers' house with no idea what he's walking in to. He certainly doesn't expect to be heading to such a nice area of London or for the door to be opened by such an attractive older gentleman. At over twice Liam's age, Ali (Alistair) is a little different to the men he usually encounters. For one thing, Liam is his first male sexual partner and for another, it quickly becomes clear that he wants to feel like what they're doing is more than just scratching an itch. What starts off as a one time visit, becomes a weekly booking and Liam finds the lines between client and lover becoming rapidly blurred and he refuses to admit it.

I was drawn into Liam's world from the very first sentence. He deserves so much more from life but being dealt a bad hand at a young age led him to where he is today - in survival mode.

AZ has a way of making the characters really come to life and even though some of the content may make difficult reading for some (abuse, drugs and suicide), it's not gratuitous, it all helps the reader better understand Liam and (sadly) it's all so compellingly believable and I couldn't help but adore Liam and hope he found the happiness he deserved. The development of his relationship with Ali was lovely. My heart ached for him, knowing how he felt about Liam and how he had to step back and accept that Liam had other clients. If I could've given Liam a shake and told him not to let his pride get in the way and accept genuine help when it's offered, I would have. Ali is his true knight in shining armour and by the end of the book, I was happy that it really did have a happy ending and there wasn't a cliffhanger in sight.

This book can be read as a standalone novel but if you haven't read 'The Boy Who Fell To Earth', for starters, why the heck not?! It's awesome!! and secondly it gives a bit more of an idea about Liam and how he lives before we hear from him himself.

I don't know what's next for this author (I loved Chirs and I'd really like to hear what he has to say) but whatever it is, I'm already looking forward to reading it.

Liam for Hire
By A. Zukowski
Beaten Track Publishing, 2018
Four stars

Although not as harrowing as Zukowski’s previous novel, “The Boy Who Fell to Earth,” Liam Murphy’s journey from rural Cork to the streets of London is dark and unflinching. It is also filled with light, in the person of Ali – Alastair McClelland – a middle-aged widower who carries his own burden of regret.

Fathers loom large in this story, although principally on the perimeter, and they serve to explain how each of these men, a generation apart, ended up where they are. The age difference between Ali and the twenty-one-year-old Liam is also a device to highlight a truth all too often underestimated today: as more and more gay kids come out while still at home in their teens, the risk of rejection and homelessness for these young people looms ever larger.

In spite of some moments of despair and darkness – moments that anchor the narrative neatly – the overall tone is one of hopefulness, as Ali proves himself immune to the insidious prejudices of well-heeled liberal British society. There is no festering secrecy between Ali and Liam, which is in itself a rather refreshing change from the usual story line. The imbalance here is not about wealth or age, but rather one of self-worth. The critical narrative is centered on Ali’s efforts to see and understand Liam’s personal struggle and thereby act to change his destiny.

This is a romance, and love is the answer, but nothing in the book is too pat. The ultimate truth hammered (gently) into the reader’s conscious is the fact that where you go in life can indeed depend on where you started out. Good people can go bad and make terrible choices because of the direction in which they were pushed when they were young. Both Liam and Ali discover hidden strengths in the other man, and thus find the means to push back against the blinkered injustices of the world around them.

Blurb:
Liam Murphy has kicked his drug habit and now pays for the high living costs in London as an escort. His life is finally in balance. His only problem is that he obsesses about the minimum number of times he has to bend over to make ends meet. As long as he has his emotions under control, it'll be fine. That's what Liam keeps telling himself until he meets the young widower Alastair, also known as Ali, whose emerald eyes remind him of Ireland.

Featuring Liam from The Boy Who Fell to Earth.

Total Score: 5/5

Summary:
Liam has been struggling to make a life for himself after he left home four years ago. Life of the streets often places individuals into situations where they a forced to do whatever to stay alive. Many like Liam end up selling their bodies to stay alive and often that leads to drug abuse. Liam was lucky enough to kick his habit and find help from his friend Chris who took him in, but they still needed to do whatever they could to make money. Liam put his feelings and emotions away to stay alive until the day he met Alastair or Ali. Ali hired Liam for his services, but Liam quickly learned that Ali was not like an of his other Johns. Ali treated Liam like he was real person unlike most people and his interest in Liam began to slowly turn their relationship into something that Liam never expected. Unfortunately, it is one thing to leave the streets, but another for Liam to overcome his feelings of worthlessness and despair he has felt all of his life.

This was a riveting story of one man overcoming his past and fighting for a better future. With the help of others and believing in yourself anything is possible.

4.5 stars- Raw vulnerability in this hurt/comfort

Liam for Hire is a spin-off from another title by this author and now appears to be part of a series, but it reads perfectly fine as a standalone. A hurt/comfort romance. This novel tapped into a range of powerful and raw emotions as Liam struggled to overcome his drug addiction and create a new life for himself. This was my first book by the author, and I was definitely impressed with the character depth and development over the course of the book. The writing was smooth and cohesive with an authentic, believable dialogue that easily wove into the narrative to create a moderate pace and kept me engaged cover to cover.

I’m always a sucker for complex characters, and Liam definitely was that. I loved how the author juxtaposed his vulnerability with his strength, it gave him layers and made him that much more relatable. Liam substantially grew over the course of the book, but it was never easy and I appreciated how hard he worked for it. This is definitely not a love fixes everything type of story, which made it all the more powerful in my eyes. I also really liked Ali, especially his quiet acceptance of Liam. Their experiences and personalities complemented each other well; and while there was no shortage of physical chemistry between these two, it was their strong emotional connection that touched me. I also liked that Ali wasn’t billed as the true love/savior of the rent boy, rather he and Liam both had exposed vulnerabilities and regrets from their pasts to contend with. Seeing these two work through their own issues while supporting one another was lovely and affirming, ensuring this will be a story that sticks in my head for quite some time.

This was a well-written and gritty story about second chances and falling in love. First of all, I wanted to wrap Liam up in a fluffy blanket and set him in the backyard where he could soak in the sun like a sunflower because he has certainly experienced more about life than I ever did at that age. He'd been on a cycle of drug abuse, homelessness, self-loathing, bad decisions, and depression, and he's only 21 years old. Ah, so young!!! Now working as an escort to pay the bills and to keep a roof over his head, Liam meets a new client by the name of Ali who ends up hiring him every week. However, Ali isn't a knight in shining armour nor is he a sugar daddy and this isn't Pretty Woman where Liam is going to be saved from a life of prostituition by a wealthy business man.

The story unfolds slowly as Liam and Ali get to know each other and Liam attempts not to get emotionally involved, but how could he not when the man is so considerate, patient, accepting, and kind? Of course, Liam manages to sabotage his own chance for happiness in quite a spectacular fashion, but Ali never gives up on Liam and continues to wait for him with open arms. In otherwords, Liam is a prickly hedgehog with a soft underbelly who wants to be loved and accepted. 5-stars for Ali gently wooing him.

Also, I must say how thrilled I am to realize the next book in the series is about Chris. I had been thinking to myself that I hoped he got his own book and IT'S ALREADY BEEN WRITTEN, so you can imagine what I'll be reading next!

I love this book. Liam has gone through so much that has caused him pain and despair, he now tries to keep his feelings suppressed as he works as an escort. Once he meets sweet and wonderful Ali, Liam's walls start to crumble. These two men meeting and developing feelings for each other does not make their lives easier. Instead, Liam can't believe he could be worthy of Ali, or worthy of happiness at all. He pushes Ali away, then spirals into the depths that have been nipping at his heels. With the help of others who care for Liam, Ali does all he can to show the younger man that he is so much more than he believes.
This story is heartbreaking in several places. Ali shows Liam how important he is over and over, just waiting for Liam to realize that truth. Liam also does all he can to try to protect Ali from pain. I love these men, and their story is absolutely beautiful, gut-wrenching, and ultimately so very satisfying. I highly recommend this wonderful book!

ARC Review

Liam for Hire was quite good, but as an American, a lot of the grammar/dialogue threw me to the point where I had to stop and decipher what the characters were saying. I'm "fluent" enough in the British English that a lot of the Irish slang was confusing as both were used. I am not particularly a fan of first person (though I do write it occassionally), and I rarely like present tense, but the author did an excellent job of making me forget about it. As for the addiction... this was touching, more for the fact that I have a friend who recently "fell off the wagon" and made many of the same or similar commentary Liam does especially in regards to when Liam used again. You "hit the nail on the head" in the truthfullness of his internal musings, the constant worry, the eternal fight against the pull. I tip my proverbial hat to you.

I love stories that explore the inner world of its characters. How people think about themselves the world and others and how two people can form a deep bond.

I was loving the start of this book. I liked how the characters met and were interacting. The relationship was nicely building momentum and I felt we were on the road to exploring a deep connection between Liam and Ali. I wanted to read about how they would navigate the fundamental change in their relationship from prostitute/client to boyfriends. Unfortunately the story took a different direction which I will hide under a spoiler tag The new direction dimmed my enjoyment, although I did finish the book.

Liam has overcome alot. He has kicked his drug habit and went from homeless to making a living, even if it's as an escort. He meets Ali on the job and they develop a connection. Ali lost his wife a few years ago and Liam is the first man he has ever been with, with Ali realizing later in life his true sexual orientation. There are hurdles and obsticles, but if love is true it can overcome.

I truly enjoyed the story of Liam and Ali. The story was well written and intriguing.

I received this book as an Advanced Readers Copy and am voluntarily leaving my honest review and recommendation.

This was such a brilliant and well written book

This book will take you through a roller-coaster of emotions. It is a bit high on the angst and the characters are relatable and well fleshed out.

The writing is gripping and engaging and I was totally engrossed in this book from the first page.

If you like a sweet age gap, opposites attract romance with all the feels. I would definitely recommend this one.

Content Warning: deals with a history of parental domestic violence, historic and current drug use, drug recovery and relapse, cancer, loss, mental health, suicidal thoughts

Now, let's get down to the nitty gritty:

I loved this! It is a touching, realistic portrayal of a young man's struggle through life. First off, let me say that I haven't read the connected story, The Boy Who Fell to Earth (Sasha's story) but I'd be interested to read it, if it's anywhere near as touching as this one. Plus, Sasha was an intriguing character in this book and I'd love to get to know him better.

I've only ever read a book like this once before and it had exactly the same effect on my that Liam for Hire has had – I'm speechless. And, as a girl who could talk for Scotland, that is saying something. But, I am. I feel raw. Like someone scooped up all the emotions inside of me, scrambled them about and left me feeling book-hungover, empty, raw, completely mixed up, and on the verge of tears. I don't even know if they're happy tears for that ending, or if they're sad tears for everything came before it, or if they're tears of exhaustion because I feel like I've been through the wringer. All I know is that I feel like I've had my faith in the world restored, smashed and then put back together again, a little cracked but mostly whole and ready to go out there and face the world.

I could talk all day about the plot and the journey Liam goes on, how he faces his darkest fears, challenges his addictions, and goes through all the emotional and physical pain to come out the other side again. I could talk about the writing style and how 1st isn't usually my preference, but this one sucked me in and proved to be only one of two books that have ever chosen a 1st person autobiographical narrative that I've loved to pieces.

I could talk about how it covered the serious issues of drug addiction, the reality of recovery and relapse, the life of an escort, and mental health, without ever making them shiny happy things that were instantly solved by finding 'the one', but real life issues that continued to have an effect and were real all the way past that happily ever after.

I could mention that Liam stole my heart; that Ali was an utter darling; that I adored Sasha and Chris and how they stood by Liam regardless of what he thought of himself. I could talk about how the journey from homeless junkie to college boy was profound and beautiful and real.

I could even talk about the things that weren't perfect, like the Prologue being 1st person past tense and then moving in 1st person present for the rest of the story; that there were some instances of stilted language and breaks for thoughts/explanations to take place. But I don't hate to.

This story speaks for itself. It doesn't need my review. My opinion doesn't matter. This is one of those books that will either speak to you or not. It will hit you where it hurts, or you won't feel a thing. It will rake a gaping hole in your heart and then fill it with love Liam and Ali, or it won't. You'll need to read it to decide.

All I can tell you is that it touched me. It was beautiful. Liam was beautiful. Damaged, jaded, broken – whatever word you want to use, Liam was it. He was shaken up, tossed aside, and left with a self-worthy lower than the gutter. Then, one day, someone came along who showed him he was more than that. Someone took the time to care. To notice. To see him.

I cried. I smiled. I fell in love. And I'd do it all over again, once I've gathered my shattered emotions together and I'm sure I'll survive the emotional shredding.

If you read it, you'll never forget it. That is a promise.

~

There are a few quotes that I wanted to pick out. Not necessarily because they were my favourite, but because they spoke to me, they said something about the story that I can't put into words, or because they point to a pivotal moment that I can't discuss without spoilers.

“Sasha wasn't going to cry if I died.”

“My heart was broken and the pieces were scattered in Ireland and on the streets of London.”

“There's one thing I know about addiction. No one but no one is responsible except the person who decides to take drugs.”

“I can't see any escape.”

“I stare at my hands and remember my dad's and how I trusted them when I was a kid until I learned that they could turn into fists. And words could hurt even more than the bruises.”
