Trapped in the criminal mega-corporation, Quasicore, Del tries to escape only to become entangled with the dazzling, dangerous Shays. Sinsudee Shay’s offer of protection and employment seems too good to be true. He has to find out if Shay Enterprises is a rival of the Core or a partner in crime.
Sin needs a pilot for her courier service. Rescuing Del from the Core is an added bonus, but he’s more than she bargained for. She’s too drawn to her new employee who’s intuitive enough to question her motives. He could ruin her and her brother’s plans.
Del’s wild attraction for the enigmatic Sin Shay only complicates matters. He can’t resist her lethal beauty, even as he fears the worst about their company. Is Sin’s offer of a new life his last chance for redemption or just another version of hell?

So, a young man is forced to work for a corrupt organization to pay off debt his father incurred before dying. He is particularly talented at racing small spaceships through obstacle courses and ends up being "rescued" by a gorgeous woman and her sexy brother. By joining forces with them, he is reconnected with his younger brother, and finds friends and love. He also gets to engage in some action that provides a bit of revenge against the organization that had strong armed him into doing unsavory things for them.
I liked the hero--he was easy to understand and empathize with. He also hasn't had much opportunity to develop normal relationships, so is a bit of a fish out of water for much of the book. The heroine is a bit over the top--gorgeous, incredibly intelligent, develops great strategy, an amazing fighter, and incredibly talented pilot. She is also likeable, more because her life is not really her own, but she manages to have fun anyway. Because of her situation, she has only her brother as someone who she can truly speak to, and some things you don't want to talk with your brother about. So, neither has much experience with normal friendships or romantic relationships. This means that they have trouble communicating. When they finally do, they don't understand each other.
While I enjoyed the book, the romance developed very quickly. They were in love after just a couple of days and a few interactions, little of which was meaningful. I also don't buy that the siblings would have put Del in the position to go out on one of their runs with so little training. In just a few hours he picked up multiple scenarios and techniques? Not realistic at all. Too much happened in too short a time for me to buy in to it.
This is apparently a trilogy and there are clear signals for who will be the subjects of the next two books. There is a nice setup that fits well with the plot and action and avoids a lot of foundational work for a different book. i received a digital copy of this book for review, and am looking forward to reading the next two, as I'm willing to buy them. Despite the major flaws, I found the plot moved forward consistently, there is a properly nasty villain, some fun interactions, and moments of action (and sexy times). Overall, it was a fun read.
As a character driven writer who loves stories of redemption, I have to say that Last Chance hero, Del Givliani, is one of my favorite characters. Burdened with a dark past, he tries to remake his future with the help of Sin Shay and her mischievous brother. The Shay twins are such compelling characters, strong, mysterious, and brutally attractive. Del didn't stand a chance, and neither did I--they ran right over me and into a sequel. Keep your eyes open for Book 2 of the Sunscapes Trilogy!
I would have easily given four stars if the focus would have been more on the sci-fi aspects. As it is this book is a romance novel in space. Although I have never enjoyed this much romance and drama before.
OK, quick addendum. I just read on the author's page that she writes sci-fi romance novels. So that's that.
I am an avid Reader of all books. But I mostly read mystery books. For 2014 I plan on reading more books. My daughter recommended GoodReads. After scanning hundreds and hundreds of books I came across Michelle O'Leary books. They sounded very interesting so I started with LAST CHANCE. Right from the first few pages I was hooked. Del was my favorite character and then the Twins. I could not stop reading this book until last night I finally finished. You get so wrapped up in these characters that you don't want the story to end...Thank you Michelle for writing Book 2. I am now a Michelle O'Leary fan. 5 Gold Stars*****
Yeah...no. This book is predictable, with completely stereotyped characters and virtually no interesting world-building. I really disdain books in which the characters immediately fall in love for purely physical reasons. It's just sort of...stupid. If you're interested in space opera romance, try Linnea Sinclair instead. Otherwise, save your time and 99 cents.
Is this book worth reading? Well......for the most part yes. The writing is good, there are some interesting characters and the storyline is intriguing. However....it never really reaches "great" it just plods along at a level that keeps you reading. Its a good read not a great read.
