The Purple Man a villain specializing in mind control is about, manipulating everybody. I never liked the Purple Man, even when he was a minor Daredevil villain. I don't think Radioactive Man would be a hero right now.
Ultimately, I didn't buy that Zemo was behind all of that. How can anyone really control the Purple Man?
I'm not sure I liked the thing with Atlas and Genis-Vell.
Also, the House of M issue was pretty flat and nonessential.
Finally, I'm probably docking this book for how gross the Purple Man is. It's just unpleasant to read.
That said, the stuff with Songbird, Abe Jenkins, Speed Demon, and Blizzard was pretty good. This isn't a terrible book; it's not clear to me if it really meant to do anything, though.

Between the house of M crossover, villains not living up to their potential (why even use purple man?) to Zemo never ending fucking boring return. The only good thing about this arc was songbird.
Again, like most Thunderbolts collections, I enjoyed this despite it's glaring flaws. There is something about the Thunderbolts, the idea of flawed people trying for redemption and mostly failing that is infinity attractive to me. And beyond that Songbird just a really awesome character and I feel that she has such charisma on the page that she manages to drive the story even when she's mostly in the background.
By in far the best part of the book was the story surrounding the Atlanteans and Radioactive man. It was nice to have this character that was one a pretty one dimensional villain fleshed out a little more and to once again come back to the theme of some one who's done what they realize as wrong struggling to do right but not quite making it.
Okay, so the flaws. The art work in the very beginning is just awful. Exacerbating things was sub par text/text box placement and use (I know that must have a name but I don't know what it is). The House of M issue was literally an interruption of a 3 part story and it felt like it had very little to with the thunderbolts (as well as not fitting in well with the greater picture of the House of M story). Finally that final story involving Zebediah Killgrave was pretty awful. The story was hard to follow, the villain seemed WAY to powerful (yet for someone reason the rest of the world seemed to shrug at the fact he had taken over the main city in the U.S. and all it's superheroes) and in the end he kind of went down like a chump. I also REALLY disliked the scene where he made Mellisa strip for him for no apparent reason. It seemed a little excessive and unnecessary. They could have as easily had the suggestion of threat of what he was going to do instead of it out right happening. I guess it just bugs me that such a strong female character was so easily overpowered and used a basically a throw away sexual one liner.
This gets the series going. Atlantis attacks dry land, and the team get a new member to help deal with them. There's lots of nice character stuff where the new members have to decide whether they are really heroes. A good read.
I love the Thunderbolts but this was a hard trudge. Songbird keeps it going because she's an awesome character. The rest of the 'bolts are pretty boring here. Even Chen Lu who is usually one of my favorites.
The Purple Man has to be one of the worst characters in the Marvel Universe, and I find he stops stories cold, as he does in this case. There are some interesting ideas here, but this collection never really gels as well as it could.
