Dollycas’s Thoughts
All Tobi wants is to help her friend Carter, she never knew what a can of worms she was opening. Fiona was making hairdresser Carter McDade’s life miserable. She thinks she is a talented actress and he doesn’t agree and let’s her know it which gets him in hot water at the theater. Tobi decides to hire Fiona for a commercial to try and smooth the waters much to the displeasure of the person she had already promised the part. Fiona arrives on set and makes a horrible impression. When the actress is found dead after a break everyone on the shoot quickly becomes a suspect but Carter is the prime suspect especially when they learn the hair dye he was applying may be the murder weapon.
I was excited to visit again with my literary friend Tobi Tobias, she and I have a couple of things in common, like an unusual laugh and our diets. She has a huge heart and went way beyond the limits to help Carter this time. Not sure I would have done the same thing. Alive Fiona was a ticking time bomb that started to explode immediately when she tried to tell everyone how to do their jobs. Even if she hadn’t died she could have ruined the commercial and the reputation of Tobi’s firm.
On the romantic front for Tobi, what started looking hopeful in the first book really hit the skids in this one. Mary Fran is also having problems at her pet shop with a neighbor and she ends up with a huge surprise. So murder, romance drama and an upset neighbor. Tobi has her hands full. But my favorite part was Grandpa Stu returns to help clear everything up. These are a superb group of characters. It is so easy to become invested in their lives.
Ms Bradford presents a wonderful plot with an unusual murder weapon and one that hits very close to home for me. Had I been in Fiona’s position I would have been dead too. She gave a a plethora of suspects and they all had the means and after spending time with Fiona motive was spread around liberally. I was totally surprised when the real culprit was revealed.
I really enjoy this series because it gives me everything I want in a cozy mystery. She also includes those moments that make me laugh out loud and would have Tobi snorting as well.
This story is fast paced and a quick read. I do recommend that if you haven’t read Death in Advertising, start with that one first as this one picks up where that one left off.

30 SECOND DEATH was 8 hours of unbelievable reading!
Oh, I do love this series. As I mentioned in my review of book one, DEATH IN ADVERTISING I was blown away with every aspect of it. In starting 30 SECOND DEATH, I of course was hoping for more of the same, and author Laura Bradford delivered!
Tobi Tobias is a fresh and fun protagonist. I love her quirky sense of humor, and that she snorts when she laughs like I do! She’s feel very real to me, meaning, she could be someone I know. When I read some leads in other series, I feel like I could never be them. But Tobi, she makes me feel like I can do anything.
30 SECOND DEATH was a fast paced, exciting story that touched on every emotion in me at one point or the other. When I wasn’t laughing at the antics of some of the characters, or deep into other story points of this great book, I was holding my breath over the whodunit portion of the tale. Ms. Bradford really upped the mystery content in this installment of the Tobi Tobias Mysteries, and after the last book, I wouldn’t have thought that possible!

Advertising agency owner and admitted chocoholic Tobi Tobias is back in 30 Second Death, a new cozy mystery by Laura Bradford. This is the 2nd book in the Tobi Tobias Mystery series.
The basics: To help out her Bestie, Hair Stylist Carter McDade, Tobi offers a part in a commercial to a problematic local prima donna, Fiona Renoir. Fiona causes problems wherever she goes and has little talent. She refuses to allow Carter to do her hair for a local production of Rapunzel, but happily leaves the cast when offered the commercial. On set, Fiona continues to cause problems. She throws tantrums, yells at the crew, and continues to make Carter's professional life a living hell. When Tobi informs her that she has no choice but to allow Carter to color her hair as part of the commercial, Fiona agrees. Unfortunately, seconds after he applies chemical to her hair, Fiona drops dead. Immediately the police suspect he killed her because of the feud they had going. Tobi jumps right into the case to clear her best friend before he is arrested and charged with murder. With the help of her grandfather and friends, Tobi sifts through suspects to prove Carter's innocence.
Although first person perspective is usually not my favorite, Laura Bradford pulls it off perfectly. The humor, advertising theme, and mystery makes this a fun, enjoyable cozy series! Tobi Tobias is an intelligent, funny and engaging main character. Her cast of supporting friends (and grandfather) add a nice depth to the books. As with most cozies, the mystery portion of the plot is light, but still engaging. No gore, no spurting blood, no cussing. So these books would be appropriate for readers from middle grade on up to adult. I enjoy the interaction between the characters -- a parrot who insists on making snorting noises whenever he sees Tobi, the relationship between Tobi and her grandfather, and Tobi and Carter's ongoing dislike of their elderly, cantankerous neighbor (and their horror when the grandfather wants to date her).
I enjoyed 30 Second Death just as much as the first book in this series (Death in Advertising). The mystery is well-paced, interesting and has plenty of suspects, twists and turns. I enjoy the advertising theme and the humor sprinkled liberally into each story as well. I will definitely be reading more of this series! The next book, And Death Goes To...., will be coming out in December 2017. I can't wait! :)

Writing catchy ads by day and working in the pet store as needed leaves Tobi Tobias some time for fun with new beau Andy.

Picking up on the cliffhanger of Andy's ex entering the story, Tobi feels sad and confused and isn't sure what Andy wants.

It took awhile to get to this second book in the Tobi Tobias series, and I found myself enjoying her writing style as much as I did the first book. Perhaps a little repetitive with some items, but overall very good.
Happy to say that I already have the third, but sad that I don't see any more after that one.

When Tobi’s friend Carter goes off on an actress at the theater where he works, he’s afraid of losing his job. Tobi decides to help out by hiring the actress to be in a commercial she is about to shoot for an advertising client, but when the actress dies on set while Carter is coloring her hair, he immediately finds himself the top suspect. Now Tobi must do another favor – clear Carter of murder.
I loved the first book in this series, and one of the main reasons was the characters. They are a delight to be around, and their relationships are so wonderful. I felt the mystery in this one was slow, especially in the first half where a couple of sub-plots got in the way of Tobi solving the mystery. Still, it did reach a logical conclusion at the end.

Meet Tobi Tobias as she navigates the ins and outs of owning her own advertising agency. When she does a favor for her best friend, Carter McDade, he ends up as a murder suspect and she ends up scrambling to save her business. The characters are real and the murder plot complex. The dialogue is snappy and gives you a lot laughs. I to go back and read the first book and keep up with this fun series.

The characters are well rounded, well developed and three dimensional. Tobi is smart, loyal, clever and very funny. She would do anything for her family and friends. She is a snackaholic, which I can relate to. Mary Fran and Sam, her friend and her friend’s son are such great people and friends to Tobi. They love animals and I enjoyed reading about the pet store and all of the animals within. I loved reading about her interactions with her friends and listening to her conversations with them. And of course you have to love Grandpa Stu and all of his shenanigans.
The writing style flows smoothly and the book is an easy read. The author is very talented in her descriptive writing and through much of the book, I felt like I was right there watching all of the action taking place. I felt like I was inside the pet shop, To Know Them Is To Love Them (great name for a pet store), hanging out with the animals. Rudder Malone, one cantankerous bird, had me
laughing out loud on more than one occasion.
The mystery was carried on well throughout the book. There were enough suspects to consider and and clues to sift through that it was difficult to figure out who-dunnit. I had an inkling of who the killer was but I did not know for sure until it was revealed at the end.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well crafted cozy mystery. With wonderful characters (I so enjoy Tobi and her friends), a great mystery and humor galore, I think this is just about the perfect cozy. When I was not reading it, I wanted to be reading it, to spend time in the world that this author has created. If I could, I would give this book more than 5 Stars.

If you enjoyed the first book in this series then do yourself a favor and make sure to add this one to the TBR list. The second installment in the Tobi Tobais Mystery is another page turning read filled with great characters and what I thought was a terrific mystery. Tobi is such a great character. For only the second book in the series she is complex, multi-dimensional and layered. I find her to be an independent spirit who loves her family and friends and has a terrific wit and sense of humor that will make you chuckle several times throughout the book (at least I did). The rest of the cast is back and ready to go as they have to help clear Carter of suspicion of murder. The mystery is well plotted, fast paced and had a twist that I just did not expect.
This is quickly becoming a series that I really look forward to reading and can't wait to see what is in stall for the group in the next book.

Tobi Tobias seems to be having a streak of bad luck. It looks like her boyfriend has flown the coop, her friend Mary Fran's pet shop is in trouble (thanks to overly chit chatty birds!!), and her best friend Carter is accused of Murder!
She might not be able to do anything about her boyfriend troubles or Mary Fran's avian woes but you can bet your last bowl of cocoa puffs that she'll clear Carter's name and find out who really killed the high strung and overbearing Fiona!
With several suspects to choose from and lots of twists and turns, you will be turning the pages pretty quickly to find out who Tobi has uncovered as the killer. Luckily, she has Sam and Grandpa Stu to help her! Another well-rounded and fast paced mystery by Laura Bradford! I am eagerly awaiting the next book in the series!

I absolutely love this series! This was another book that I have been impatiently waiting for since I finished the first book, and now I'm anxiously awaiting book three. The romantic bits were a bit predictable, but oh my gosh that mystery! I loved it! There were so many suspects and some good motives. Add in a visit from her grandpa and the plot was jam-packed from beginning to end.

Tobi Tobias is delightfully layered and realistically flawed. She places great stock in friendships and has an endearing narrative voice. I sort-of see her as Sandra Bullock in “While You Were Sleeping” or “Miss Congeniality” – a little awkward, a lot lovable, and a good heart. She’s witty and smart, she snort-laughs, she has stand-offs with parrots, and she is a total junk food addict.
In 30 Second Death, the main supporting characters are back and Tobi has her hands full! She must solve a murder to save Carter and solve a business problem to save Mary Fran. All while maintaining her own advertising business and trying not to gag at the thought of her beloved Grandpa Stu’s simmering romance with Tobi’s hated neighbor. You can imagine the hilarity that ensues.
The mystery isn’t so much about solving who did it as it is about proving who didn’t. The victim is so obnoxious that’s it’s almost a relief when she’s killed (i know… that’s awful. But you haven’t met her yet! Trust me.) but then the dread sets in as you realize that Tobi’s best friend Carter (another fave character of mine) is the number one suspect.
Bottom Line: Humor, heart, and a well-plotted mystery. It doesn’t get much better. Tobi Tobias is a heroine you’d want as a friend – and she’ll feel like one after you’ve read a book in this series. 30 Second Death is the second book but it can work as a standalone if you haven’t read Death in Advertising yet. Emphasis on ‘yet’ because you should, even just for the enjoyment factor. And the ending of this book has me eagerly waiting for And Death Goes To… to see how both revelations will play out in Mary Fran’s life. (Not a cliffhanger, per se, so don’t panic.) If you’re a fan of cozy mysteries, make sure this series is on your TBR list!

Despite the fact that I find Tobi annoying at times, her deep rooted kindness makes me appreciate her as a person and as a character. And although poor decisions abound, if better choices were made there'd be no mystery.
I really enjoyed the mystery in 30 SECOND DEATH. Laura Bradford is quite adept at misdirecting readers, leading us toward what seem like the logical conclusion. When the mystery is solved we're reminded of all those well placed clues we may have glossed over which now make us say, "Well, of course. It all makes sense now!" The romantic anticipations and troubles of both Tobi and Mary Fran add to the angst of the story, heightening the drama.The mood is lightened, however, with plenty of humor, from Tobi's new clients, Dom and Gina Paletti, but especially from Rudder, wise words from teenager, Sam, and those quirky traits of Tobi.
30 SECOND DEATH is a well rounded mystery that provides a pleasurable mixture of laughter and drama while highlighting the importance of love and friendship.

I loved this book as I do all of Ms. Bradford's. I would actually give this a 4 1/2 star.
When a diva that has problems with Tobi's good friend Carter, Tobi tries to help, but when she ends up dead and eyes turn to Carter, there are even bigger problems. Tobi is torn in this book between Carter being under suspicion, Grandpa Stu falling for Mrs. Rapple, her boyfriend's ex fiancé in town and Mary Fran having problems at the pet store, she is definitely pulled in many directions.
I love the characters in this series. Tobi is a strong woman, but she does have insecurities and is addicted to junk food, I love that because she comes across as very real developed character. Grandpa Stu is lovable as always and I was thrilled to see him back in this book, I think his burgeoning romance with Mrs. Rapple is cute and can't wait to see what happens next. I love Mary Fran's son, a teenager who knows what he wants to do in life, has a good head on his shoulders but still has the teen excitement of seeing a studio. The mystery was good and kept me guessing until close to the end. I did do quite a bit of laughing, Rudder the bird being a big source of humor, but the one client actually had me laughing out loud, I love when a book can do that. I will definitely be continuing on with this series and eagerly await the next.

Wow! I really enjoyed this second novel in Laura Bradford’s A Tobi Tobias Mystery series! The author has a winning combination of witty dialog between very likable characters, a mind-boggling murder mystery, and romance on the rocks. Oh, and Rudder. Without Rudder, Tobi and Mary Fran would be … truly rudderless in a world with less snorts.
Tobi loves chocolate, adores her family, friends and animals. Her ad agency is successful and she is “wowing” two new clients. Her best friend is Carter; the job he loves is on the line. JoAnna is Tobi’s outstanding, highly efficient, motherly secretary. Mary Fran, Tobi’s friend, owns a unique pet shop threatened by a cranky new neighbor. Her 15-year-old son Sam is a brilliant and talented photographer who understands human nature better than most adults. Rudder, the African Grey Parrot who torments Tobi with imitations of her snorting laugh, is star of the pet shop. Tobi’s motley group is blessed with Grandpa Stu, in her corner since she was born. He seems to be sweet on – horrors! – her mean-spirited neighbor, Ms. Rapple. What more can a girl need? Andy…the exceptional boyfriend who is talking again with his returning ex-girlfriend who once preferred a career to marriage.
Tobi is preparing for a commercial shoot for an upscale spa. Rachel, the art director from the studio who films her TV commercials, is – or was – the female “lead” in the commercial. Rachel, yearning for an acting career, was looking forward to it. Tobi had to change her mind to help Carter, a leading hair sculptor. He had a huge fight with Fiona, actress at the local theater where he works and her Uncle Frank runs. Frank heard the fight. In hopes of Carter keeping his job, Tobi asks Fiona to be in the commercial instead. Rachel says she understands but her behavior denies it. Her right-hand person, Sara, is gunning for Rachel’s job.
Everyone is tired of Fiona the Diva who had loudly proclaimed huge peanut allergy. The final scene is being filmed; Carter is coloring Fiona’s hair to show a salon service. She falls out of the salon chair, dead, at Carter’s feet the cause of death being peanut oil in the hair coloring that he had mixed.
Each character is delightfully complex, designed with care and demonstrated through their actions and dialog and, for Tobi, her internal dialog. Tobi is the embodiment of many young women on the road to success. She has ongoing concerns about her company and appearance, whose insecurities are evident only to JoAnna and a new client, Gina. Of all the characters, I like Tobi and Mary Fran best, and envy her the kind of friends who love her. Except for what he put Tobi through, I would like to pop Andy on the nose!
I like that the author introduces almost all the characters in the beginning of the novel so one can then focus on the crime. The plot is tightly woven with twists that this reader didn’t anticipate. Carter, of course is to blame. I tenaciously suspected a different, conniving bad guy/ gal. I love the way young Sam steals hearts with wisdom beyond his years. I am captivated by Pizza Adventures “experience”! The real killer is a complete surprise, someone I hadn’t even considered. Every situation is resolved, leaving no loose ends. I highly recommend 30 Second Death; it is definitely a worthy sequel to Death in Advertising, and not to be missed!

30 Second Death is the second book in Laura Bradford’s fabulous Tobi Tobias Mystery series. This whodunit has a great storyline, well-developed and engaging characters, lots of humor, and touches of romance. Ms. Bradford has a witty writing style and I’m looking forward to reading more of her books. There are lots of twists and turns and no shortage of suspects This steadily paced story held my attention throughout the entire book and kept me guessing whodunit. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a well-crafted cozy mystery.
Tobi Tobias is a chocoholic and the owner of the Tobias Ad Agency. Her business is taking off and with two new clients, Salonquility and Pizza Adventure, and Tobi is excited about the potential of buying a car but is still feeling sad and insecure ever since Andy’s ex-girlfriend showed up at the restaurant during a recent date. Carter McDade, one of Tobi’s best friends, upstairs neighbor, and talented hairdresser has been hired by a local theater to do the hair and makeup for the actors in the production of Rapunzel. Frank Martindale is Carter’s boss and he hired his niece, Fiona Renoir (who is Carter’s nemesis), to play the lead. Carter can’t take Fiona’s constant complaints and demands any longer and verbally attacks Fiona. Frank overhears Carter and now he’s concerned Frank will fire him. Author Laura Bradford writes a variety of series but I was completely smitten with her Tobi Tobias Mystery series and was thrilled when 30 SECOND DEATH, the second book in the series, became available! From the opening page to the very end I was struck again and again at how creatively funny this author is! Writing humor is a gift and Laura is gifted in spades. The protagonist, Tobi Tobias, is a proud chocoholic, addicted to Cocoa Puffs, and owns a fledgling advertising agency. The agency allows the author another avenue for developing punny sayings and slogans along with creating interesting companies for Tobi to work on… I’d actually like to frequent some of the companies she mentions :)
The characters surrounding Tobi are varied and just as developed and entertaining on their own as the main protagonist. Tobi’s upstairs neighbor and friend, Carter McDade, is the focal point of 30 SECOND DEATH. He tends to be a drama queen but still has a smile and kind word for everyone. That is until he is a murder suspect in the death of his nemesis and the theater manager’s niece, Fiona. As Carter’s world comes crashing down, Tobi steps in and starts trying to figure out who the real killer is, despite her problems going on with her sweetheart, Andy. Laura Bradford expertly juggles a variety of story-lines and plots between Tobi and the characters and weaves them together in one entertaining story that will keep you guessing “whodunit”!

I enjoyed the first in this series and had my fingers crossed that the second would be as good. Well, it may just be even better. Tobi is back along with her circle of friends and family. Beyond her problems with a vanishing boyfriend, her Grandpa Stu making googoo eyes at Tobi's obnoxious neighbor and her BFF having bird troubles in her pet store.....her dear friend Carter, the hairdresser, has been having girlfriend trouble. Not just the usual stuff. Tobi tried to help him out by giving her a bit part in a commercial and it ends in murder. Exit girlfriend, enter the cops. Can Tobi clear her friend of murder and save her ad agency at the same time? Because each mystery ends with a cliff hanger, I will be eager to read the third entry, even if it didn't have the cliff hanger.

Tobi is a character! I love this group of friends and family that all love and support Tobi.
Tobi is determined to find out who killed the nasty Fiona. And clear her BFF at the same time. With so many suspects, Grandpa Stu comes to visit and help her out. Or did he come to hook up with Tobi's nasty neighbor? Lots of mysteries here!
The characters are well developed and this not your typical cosy mystery. Ms. Bradford has several mystery series out, so check out her Amazon page and see if you find something you like!

Truly Awesome!
I found this to be an irresistible page turner! Poor Tobi has suffered lots of angst in her past - loss of her job, catching her fiancé cheating, & having a dead body drop at her feet. However, her future appears to be brighter with a new hunky boyfriend & two brand new accounts - she might even be able to buy herself a car. Unfortunately, there are a few glitches. This is a fun series with engaging characters & lots of plot twists.

There is so much to love about this series, and I was thrilled when reading this second book in the series. Tobi is a character that you will instantly love and it isn’t hard, when the story and plot line are superbly written. This second book has laugh out moments, great wonder in the who done it and a cast of delightful characters.

Tobi's best friend Carter is in the hot seat after a woman he despised dies on the set of Tobi's latest commercial from some tainted hair dye. Tobi's relationship with Andy is up in the air and Mary Fran is having issues with the man living above the pet store complaining about noise. Grandpa Stu arrives to help Tobi clear Carter of the murder. Another great book from Laura Bradford!

Tobi’s business has picked up since her success with the Zander Closet Company despite the murder investigation from the previous book.
The only thing not going so well is her relationship with Andy because his ex-girlfriend has come back into the picture and Tobi is not sure what to do. He wanted to marry her at one point but then she moved of to pursue her career and broke his heart. Every keeps telling her things will work out but she is not so sure and she is trying to not feel hurt herself.
Her friend Carter needs help and she thought she was doing him a favor by hiring his nemesis at the theater, Fiona, for her commercial but things don’t go so well. So instead of helping him she puts him in the middle of a murder as person of interest in Fiona’s death because he couldn’t stand her and it was his hair dye that kills her. You wonder how hair dye can kill, well you will have to read and find out…lol.
Trying to figure out whodonit sort of takes her mind of of things with Andy but not a lot, then her Grandpa Stu shows up to help. I love Grandpa Stu! Tobi is freaking out about his involvement with her nemesis, Mrs. Rapple, her next door neighbor. Poor Tobi.
Fiona was a force all unto her own and I am surprised there wasn’t a huge list of people who wanted to killer her but there was a few like everyone who worked on the commercial set. Fiona was so rude and down right mean! I can’t even really feel sorry for her death, but I did feel sorry for poor Carter who was trying so hard to not think about how bad he would look in orange.
This series has a great cast of characters and a great mystery and I didn’t figure it out until a little bit before Tobi. I totally thought it was someone else!

Her friend Carter needs help and she thought she was doing him a favor by hiring his nemesis at the theater, Fiona, for her commercial but things don’t go so well. So instead of helping him she puts him in the middle of a murder as person of interest in Fiona’s death because he couldn’t stand her and it was his hair dye that kills her. You wonder how hair dye can kill, well you will have to read and find out…lol.
Trying to figure out whodonit sort of takes her mind of of things with Andy but not a lot, then her Grandpa Stu shows up to help. I love Grandpa Stu! Tobi is freaking out about his involvement with her nemesis, Mrs. Rapple, her next door neighbor. Poor Tobi.
Fiona was a force all unto her own and I am surprised there wasn’t a huge list of people who wanted to killer her but there was a few like everyone who worked on the commercial set. Fiona was so rude and down right mean! I can’t even really feel sorry for her death, but I did feel sorry for poor Carter who was trying so hard to not think about how bad he would look in orange.
This series has a great cast of characters and a great mystery and I didn’t figure it out until a little bit before Tobi. I totally thought it was someone else!

Laura Bradford has created an enjoyable cozy series that gives readers a peek inside the workings of a new and growing advertising agency. Another delight is the mystery itself. Early on I placed a bet with myself as to the identity of the killer, and nothing really made my antennae twitch enough to change my mind. I should have because I lost my bet. I love it when that happens!
I really enjoy the cast of characters in this series. Tobi is intelligent, funny, and a genuinely caring person. Her Grandpa Stu is her emotional rock, and it's really going to be interesting to see how Tobi adapts to the growing relationship he has with Ms. Rapple, the neighbor Tobi loves to hate. She has a huge blind spot when it comes to the woman, so what's it going to be, Tobi? Your happiness... or your grandfather's? I definitely want to see what's going to happen with this!
Tobi's friend, Mary Fran Wazoli, gets a larger share of the spotlight in this book, and so does Mary Fran's teenage son, Sam. Sam is a talented photographer who works on Tobi's ad campaigns. He's also a good listener and comes up with some wonderful insights, and if I have anything against this young man it's that he's almost too good to be true.
I only had two small quibbles in reading 30 Second Death. One was the fact that romance took control of the action a time or two and I've never made a secret of the fact that I don't care much for romance in my mysteries, especially when it's all about the old flame being back in town.
The second thing that bothered me also bothered me in the first book, Death in Advertising. I'm going to have to re-read that first book to see if any mention is made of Tobi hating her first name. Why? Because there is nickname overload. In Death in Advertising, Grandpa Stu called Tobi "Sugar Lump" so often that I found myself grinding my teeth. In 30 Second Death, Carter calls her "Sunshine" almost every other sentence. (Or it seems that way.) I was dreading the time when both Carter and Grandpa Stu would be in the same room with Tobi. Even Sam chimes in with his "Tobes." I know all this nickname calling must have some deeper meaning, but it escapes me. Isn't it odd the things that bother a person when she's reading?
Small irritations or not, I do enjoy this series: a good setting in the world of advertising; a great cast of characters (including a parrot with a mind of its own), and first-rate mysteries to solve. I'm looking forward to the third book.

30 Second Death was even better than Death in Advertising! Laura Bradford is an outstanding author who creates multifaceted characters with depth and wonderful hearts. This time that heart has put Tobi in a terrible position. Tobi's best friend is about to lose his job after blasting his boss's niece while said boss was standing behind him. To try to get the, hum, uh, the little minx, out of his hair, Tobi hires the mediocre actress with a diva attitude to act in a commercial for her newest client. The first pain comes from having to tell another woman, one that she likes, that she is out of the commercial to make room for Fiona. The next pain is from having to putt up with the diva during the preparation and shooting of the commercial, and the final pain is dealing with fallout from the death of the diva on her set, right at Carter's feet and guess who becomes the prime suspect...of course, Carter McDade, the best friend she was trying to help. If that isn't tough enough for you, her still-kind-of-new-but-really-important boyfriend takes her out for a lovely dinner only to have his ex-fiancé show up, the one who left him.
It was great to have another visit from her awesome grandfather and to spend time with Sam and Mary Fran. These secondary characters contribute to making this series stand out as special.

She and the other characters are multidimensional, there are a few new characters introduced. Loyal to a fault Tobi will go to the wall to help a friend and bring justice to a wrong doer. This is a fast paced novel that can be easily read in one sitting.

I think this was a stronger book than the first in the series (Death in Advertising). If you look at my review of that one, you'll see that I dinged it a bit for too-perfect characters. Not Tobi, but all her friends. I still think we all can dream of having friends as good as Tobi has, but in this book they seemed a little more real. The 15-year-old Sam is still a bit unbelievable (okay, he reminds me of the 15-year-old Brian from the early drafts of Death By Ice Cream, from before I had my own teens), but he's just quirky enough to pass.
The mystery itself was good. I did get an idea or two about whodunnit, but only found my way to the solution as Tobi did (as she uncovered the info that made it make sense), and I followed her off after all the wrong answers. Of course, I knew they had to be wrong, because it was too early in the book to be so sure, but even so, I believed her.
Dialogue is good, the romance continues to take up about the right amount of space (which is to say, not that much), and the writing overall is tight. My biggest concern now is that Tobi needs to get her diet under control, because her hatred of veggies and love of sugar is going to land her smack in diabetes-land. In all seriousness, I am a bit bothered by that, because in a way it normalizes a really unhealthy lifestyle. I figure the only reason Tobi isn't overweight is that she has had to walk everywhere, due to not having a car. Okay, I'm over-reacting, but it did bug me.
My Recommendation:

The advertising angle is a good one that allows for innovative murders and lots of new characters, and no recipes (note: I have nothing against recipes, but sometimes they seem awfully gimmicky). Just don't eat like Tobi does, okay?
