Genetic Teal

Rate this book
The world’s remaining population consists of three human regulars, genetics and mutants. Genetics are strictly controlled, but tolerated. Mutants, on the other hand, are hunted down by the Capricorn organization.

Dane Teal, an unruly genetic, works under Capricorn. He knows genetics aren’t supposed to be attracted to others, let alone the same sex, so he fights the feelings that arise after encountering Tarian; a member of a hostile, tech savvy organization called LEO.

Tarian is a skillful manipulator, who has no qualms expressing his attraction to Dane. He’s very keen to acquire Dane for LEO. But does he want Dane only for the young man’s unique genetic ability, or has Dane invoked something more in him?

3.5 stars - I enjoyed the story, especially the world building, but there were facets of the plot that were a bit jumbled and unclear. They may be better explained in the next book, as this one was left open at the end for another installment. (There were also a few minor editing issues.) Looking forward to a continuance.

I enjoyed the world building and the MC was very likable, although the sex scenes were super awkward to read. Better editing and fewer epithets would have raised the rating. I look forward to reading the next installment.

Genetic Teal presents an intriguing world that I couldn’t help but get swept into, especially with its ambitious world-building and the promise of something deeper lurking beneath the surface. Hart does an excellent job of crafting a universe that feels rich with potential, and there are definitely some standout elements in the character development. The main character is likable, and there's a sense of growth and depth to their arc, which kept me interested.

That said, there were a few bumps along the way that kept this from being a 4-star read for me. The plot, at times, felt a bit jumbled and unclear. It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what the central conflict was in some parts, as the story seemed to wander a bit before finding its stride. I’m hoping this is something that will be addressed in the next book, as Genetic Teal is left open-ended and clearly sets up for a sequel. I’m intrigued enough to see where it goes next, but I do wish the book had felt more self-contained and focused.

The editing could have been stronger too. There were a few minor issues that stood out, distracting me from the flow of the story. Some awkward phrasing, a couple of strange word choices, and a few moments that seemed overly forced could’ve been tightened up with a bit more polish.

The romance and some of the more intimate moments also felt a little off. The sex scenes, in particular, were awkward and didn’t quite land the way they seemed to be intended. A little more finesse in the writing there would’ve gone a long way in making those moments feel less clunky and more emotional.

Overall, Genetic Teal shows great promise, and I’m definitely curious to see how the series develops. I think the world Hart has created is full of potential, and while this first book didn’t fully hit the mark for me, I’m still looking forward to where things go next. It wasn’t my favorite of Hart’s works, but it has me hopeful for future installments. Fans of world-building and character-driven stories might find something to enjoy here, though be prepared for a slightly rougher reading experience.
