In this thrilling The Coltons of Shadow Creek tale, a millionaire confronts his past to save his child…
When his wife, Tess, died, tech mogul Jeremy Kincaid’s perfect world broke apart. Their young son is the light of his life, but Jeremy can’t shake suspicions that her death was no accident. Did presumed-dead Livia Colton orchestrate Tess’s car accident? Jeremy risks everything by enlisting beautiful PI Adeline Winters to uncover the truth.
Adeline once served as Tess and Jeremy’s egg donor and surrogate. Giving up her baby was the hardest thing she’d ever had to do, yet she can’t turn down Jeremy’s plea for help now. But Adeline and Jeremy must push aside their slow-burning attraction when kidnappers place the ultimate bargaining chip on the table: their son.
Two-time RITA nominee and Golden Quill winner, Jennifer Morey writes single-title contemporary romance and page-turning romantic suspense. She has a geology degree and has managed export programs in compliance with the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) for the aerospace industry. She lives at the feet of the Rocky Mountains in Denver, Colorado, and loves to hear from readers through her website, www.jennifermorey.com or Facebook.
Tess Kincaid had been unable to have a baby so convinced her college friend, Adeline Winters, to act as the egg donor and surrogate Mum for her and her husband, Jeremy. Now, more than three years later, Jeremy has contacted Private Investigator, Adeline, to ask her to investigate just how Tess died as he suspects she was murdered by Livia Knox, a notorious member of the Shadow Creek community who disappeared whilst being transferred between prisons and supposedly died, though no body was ever found. He also wants her to stay in his home to help look after their son, Jamie, and get to know the child. She found it hard enough giving him up the first time. How much harder will it be once she's had the chance to get to know her son? Is Jeremy right, was Tess murdered? Is Jamie also in danger?
This is an emotional, fascinating read, with so many potential perpetrators, scenarios and secrets to be discovered that it is a real page turner. Adeline is a brilliant character, easy to empathise with and stoic despite everything she has gone through. She's also a feisty, determined and independent, gun toting lady who stands no nonsense and needs evidence rather than supposition to sway her point of view. I have to say that I didn't like Jeremy half as much! The dramatic, action-packed events keep the story moving at a fast pace and the ending rectifies everything. Although it is part of a series, I don't believe you need to have read the prior stories to enjoy this one - it works well as a standalone. If you enjoy intriguing romantic suspense with a delightful child involved, you'll probably thoroughly enjoy this!
I requested and received a copy of this novel, via NetGalley. This is my honest review after choosing to read it.
Although this was better than the previous two Colton books in this mini-series, I simply found myself unable to enjoy it because of an extremely badly handled dead first wife trope that resulted in a seriously odious and unlikeable hero.
I don't know why authors go with the dead first wife plotline. It rarely ever works. I either remain completely unconvinced the hero is over the wife's death, or the dead wife's personality gets retconned into a "bad" woman to such a degree that you wonder why the hero married her in the first place. Here, you get the dubious distinction of achieving both those outcomes!
Jeremy Kincaid still isn't over his wife's death two years after the fact. He's convinced that her car accident wasn't the result of drunk driving and that she was actually forced off the road by the presumed dead Livia Colton. He hires private investigator Adilene Winters to prove this, as the police were never that interested. As it happens, Adilene was a surrogate for Jeremy and his wife when they wanted a baby, and is actually the genetic birth mother of their son, Jamie.
Jeremy asks that Adilene stay in his home because this could be a dangerous assignment for her, and Adilene agrees, having feelings for Jeremy and wanting to be near Jamie, as she is remains haunted by having to give him up. Adilene's agreement to stay may not be wise, but it made sense. As for Jeremy's reasons to have Adilene stay there, I don't know what the hell he wanted! Was it to torment her?
Because rather than Adilene do any private investigator work (which might be a good thing considering she doesn't seem particularly good at it), she spends most of her time looking after Jamie, running errands, and other household duties you really wouldn't expect a fucking private investigator to be doing. I mean, really! Jeremy's happy with this status quo, and Adilene doesn't question it for understandable reasons. (By the way, I think Adilene is a lousy decision maker, but at least I understood the choices she made.)
I get what the book's main conflict was. I really did. While Adilene doesn't think Livia Colton had motive or opportunity to kill Tess (Jeremy's dead wife), she still investigates fully. She understands that Jeremy needed someone to blame other than himself, as he never spotted that Tess had returned to being an alcoholic, and thinks he could have prevented her death. That's fine. It makes sense for Jeremy to feel this way, but he holds onto that assumption for dear life and uses it as an excuse to treat Adilene terribly. It also makes him look really stupid, to be honest. I didn't like him one bit. He's got a woman who's in love with him, the biological mother of his son, looking into the death of his treasured first wife, while getting the bonus of Adilene essentially acting more like a housewife than private investigator, with no indication she's going to be a permanent fixture in her son's life. It was just appalling and made me feel slightly ill!
So basically, we have a hero who clearly isn't over his wife's death, making it hard to believe Adilene could ever replace her. Yet, Tess starts the book as a lovely lady and caring mother, only to be retconned into a lapsed alcoholic who was ready to cheat on her husband. And then Jeremy admits he'd always had feelings for Adilene because she carried his child. Yes, thank the skies that that horrible, barren, alcoholic first wife of yours ran her car into a pole! It was just so awful on every level.
Other stuff irked me. For a private investigator, Adilene falls way short. She fails to consider important possibilities "because Tess was such a wonderful woman." There's bizarre interactions with side characters who comment on how Jeremy and Adilene should be dating. Who says that? And Knox Colton, the sheriff, becomes involved in the matter to such a degree (he orders surveillance on people, for example), that Adilene's continued presence in the case feels highly redundant.
The suspense element actually worked quite well, aside from h and H having sex while Jamie was in the clutches of kidnappers. (Seriously, folks, it would never happen!) The book successfully managed to forge its own plot while still linking it to the Livia Colton storyline, yet not using that ongoing saga as a way to write itself out of any corners. It was actually well done in linking Livia Colton to Jeremy's guilt over his wife's death.
But hero Jeremy Kincaid didn't work for me at all. Despite Tess being retconned into an alcoholic mess, I still wasn't convinced he was over her. What he says to Adilene in the black moment truly is unforgivable.
This was an okay read, not as good as most of the Colton books. Jeremy and his wife, Tess, had been unable to have children and used a surrogate and egg donor to have their son Jamie. Shortly after his birth, Tess died in a car accident, leaving Jeremy to raise their son alone. However, he is certain that Tess's death was no accident and that the missing-but-presumed-dead Livia Colton is responsible. Try as he might, he can't get law enforcement to investigate, so he goes to a private investigator for answers.
Adeline was a poor college student when she agreed to help Jeremy and Tess by being their surrogate, but giving up the baby was heartbreaking for her. Since then she finished her education and now runs a successful investigation business. She is surprised when Jeremy comes to her for help discovering the truth about Tess's death, but can't turn him down.
I liked Adeline. She is feisty, intelligent, and determined. I liked the way that, although she empathized with Jeremy's wish to believe Tess was murdered, she doesn't allow emotion to affect her investigation. She will only accept hard evidence to convince her. I also felt for her reluctance to spend much time with Jamie. It hurt enough to give him up the first time; getting to know him now and then leaving him again would be even worse.
I had a harder time liking Jeremy. As the book went on, his refusal to believe that the accident was just that, in spite of growing evidence, seemed to be more about his guilty feelings than an actual quest for justice. I also felt that he didn't really consider Adeline's feelings when he insisted that she spend time with Jamie. Again, it was more about his feelings than hers.
There was no doubt that there was an intense attraction between Adeline and Jeremy. I was a little disturbed by the fact that Jeremy had been drawn to Adeline during the pregnancy process while he was married to Tess. That leaned a bit further into infidelity than I was comfortable with. Now that Tess is gone, he's free to pursue the attraction, but there are also guilty feelings from his marriage that cause him to hold back his emotions. Adeline finds it easy to fall for the man who is the father of her baby but fears his interest is only that of providing a new mother for his son. I liked the way that Adeline stood up for her own needs at the end, forcing Jeremy to take an honest look at his own feelings.
The suspense of the story was good. Jeremy's conviction that Tess's accident was murder led him and Adeline to ask questions that gained them some unwanted attention. Adeline and Jeremy uncover some unexpected information about Tess and her past, linking her with Livia Colton, but is it enough for murder? When their investigation starts to get too close for someone's comfort, Jamie is kidnapped to get them to back off. Their race to save him before the kidnapper can carry out his plans is intense and had me on the edge of my seat as I read. The identity of the culprit wasn't too much of a surprise when it came to the final confrontation.
In the latest book of the Coltons of Shadow Creek miniseries, emotions run high while threats keep escalating. What might have been an intentional death also becomes more complicated as further evidence comes to light, and I often never knew what direction the story was going to take. Jennifer Morey makes her installment captivating with numerous mysteries that need resolving. While subtle clues are given from time to time, nothing is assured until all details are eventually confirmed. MISSION: COLTON JUSTICE intrigues with conflicting emotions and troubling jeopardy.
While going to college for a criminal justice degree, Adeline Winters needed extra money to pay all her bills. Being a surrogate for a childless couple was her choice to bring in more cash, and she now has her own thriving private investigation business. When the father of the child that she carried wants to speak with her, Adeline has no idea as to his reason. It seems Jeremy Kincaid thinks his wife was actually murdered two years ago, not accidentally killed when her car hit a pole.
Though Adeline is unconvinced at first, she does take Jeremy on as a client when he makes a good argument for her looking into whether the supposedly deceased Livia Colton could have had anything to do with the wreck. As facts are gathered and truths come out, it does seem as though something sinister could have occurred. When the wellbeing of the young boy is threatened, Adeline and Jeremy know all their focus must be on recovering him before it is too late.
There is already an emotional bond between Jeremy and Adeline because of how little Jamie came to be born. When they reconnect because of doubts about the death of his wife, it is very difficult for her to ignore the desire to also bond with the child. I could really sense the deep feelings Adeline had for the boy that she gave to two loving parents, yet she tried to make the best of the situation and concentrate on discovering what happened to Jeremy’s wife. He desperately wants to learn what took place when his spouse was out alone, as it has kept him from moving on, whether he admits it or not. Adding to the tension when Adeline and Jeremy are together is the sexual awareness each has of the other, and keeping it under control is not always easy. Jennifer Morey certainly took the couple on an emotional journey as they worked to uncover the truth.
MISSION: COLTON JUSTICE had me constantly changing my mind as to what was going on in the present along with what transpired in the past. As Adeline investigates, shocking information is unearthed, and I was definitely stunned by some of the news. Several suspenseful events had me wondering how everything was going to turn out. While answers pertaining to this story were learned, there is still a big question to be explored in a future book of the Coltons of Shadow Creek miniseries.
I voluntarily reviewed the book and all comments are my honest opinion
Suspenseful action with lots of heart string tugging! I really enjoyed the premise to this story ... he loses his wife, is left to raise their son on his own, and reaches out to a PI to see if his wife's death really was an accident -- but the PI just so happens to be their previous surrogate and bio Mom to his son! It had a great underlying connection between them, but unfortunately it struggled to play out in a way to keep me connected with the story line. It really felt like there were too many possible bad guys and the constant going from one direction to another pulled the attention away from the core plot. It had great possibility with the core characters, but too much of a mish-mashed story line to be satisfying.
Tech mogul Jeremy Kincaid adores his son and will do anything to give him the life he deserves. He lost his wife when their son was very young, and he can't let go of the suspicion that her car accident wasn't truly an accident. He decides he needs to pursue it once and for all and see if he can get the answers he needs to let it rest.
Private investigator Adeline Winters is thrown when Jeremy contacts her to investigate his wife's accident. She was previously their egg donor and surrogate for their son, so she's surprised he would reach out to her now. She never quite got over the heartbreak of handing over her baby, so when handed the opportunity to see him again, she jumps at the chance. Time spent together leads to bonding between them all, and Jeremy isn't sure he even wants to deny the attraction he feels for her anymore.

This was another goodie from Harlequin’s Intriuge line. Single dad romance and a second chance in some ways. Mission : Colton Justice satisfied my romantic suspense needs. So the hero and heroine met a few years ago when Adeline was a surrogate Kindcaids – Jeremy and Tess.
Fast forward to the present and now Adeline is a successful PI and Jeremy is a widower needing her help. As he believes something sinister happened to his wife then a simple car accident. There a bit of back story to this . He believes that Tess death has to do with the infamous Livia Colton who has been wrecking havoc on all the couples in this mini series.
Jeremy is a close friend to the Coltos and seen first hand how much damage she has done on the gamily and is worried that he could be affect by her crazy games. He is determined to protect his family and choose Adeline knowing that he wants her help and he wants to give her an opportunity to meet her son.
Jeremy what were you thinking as it opened a can of worms. See Adeline , may of have given up her baby to Jeremy and Tess. She hasn’t forgot that baby She has a mixed emotions about the situation and knows she has to be professional. It’s a second chance for her it becomes apparent as Jeremy is more then keen to let her in Jamie’s life.
Obvious what is going to happen. The lines get blurred as both of them quickly realise that they are attracted to each other but Jamie is the main concern and the case. He was a charming kid that draw attention to himself by his cutiness and you could see why both wanted the best for him. Unfortunately others didn’t and he soon become a key part of the story and the case
A case which kept changing and becoming complicated as the story went on as things came to light relating to Tess and Livia that affected them both. The book quickly becomes action packed as they as they are challenged by the actions of others. What seems a simple case for Justice is anything but as you can gleam from the blurb. IT was a two fold story that entwined well together in the end. This maybe the second last book of the series, but it isn’t too late to start this mini series and met the characters. As it is a charming little town that has a crazy woman running through it. Perfect mix for a romantic suspense mini series from Harlequin .
Jeremy is under the impression that his wife's death is no accident and is on a mission to figure out what was really going on . Jeremy enlists Adaline his wife's surrogate mother turned investigator to figure out that truth. Things get complicated when Adaline who accepts his offer for help when she meets him and the baby she gave up to the couple. She will do everything in her power to figure out what happens but it seems someone doesn't want the truth known when a few close calls occur.
This was such a fun mystery to read, I loved that there was plenty going on to keep the readers interesting. For instance the amount of drama that will occur when the surrogate gets to meet the baby she given birth to and seeing that attractive father again. I couldn't help but wondering how things would work out. I loved that there was plenty of close calls and moments where I just couldn't put the book down wondering what would happen next. There was a bit of romance and a couple steamy scene to keep things entertaining. Overall this was a pretty great book I enjoyed it.
I received a copy of Mission: Colton Justice from NetGalley I have to say WOW!!! What a great read! I wasn't sure what I was getting into story wise but knew it had to be good. The storyline/plot was very interesting I enjoyed seeing a surrogate mother being used. Tess died in an accident Jeremy didn't believe it was an accident. Then he hires a Private Investor Addeline who was the surrogate mother. You get to see Addeline and Jeremy gain a relationship as different events occur in the book. So many things in the story that goes on makes it so interesting but it isn't so much that you would say wow that's a lot going on. Just different events leading up to a big part of the storyline. I want to go back and read the rest of this series and read what this author has coming up in the future. Jennifer Morey is a new to me author so will be looking forward to read more of her work.
This book doesn't fit with the Colton's of Shadow Creek series at all! It's disjointed, convoluted, and was a total waste of time to read! Jennifer Morey is a mediocre writer at best. This story jumped around, gave little back story, included too many unknown charcters, and was confusing overall. The ending with Jeremy & Adeline was trite and forced. Save your money, save your time--skip this book!
Sometimes, the past stays in the past. Sometimes, an accident is just an accident. This isn't one of those times. Years since they last met, Jeremy and Adeline cross paths once again after Jeremy suspects his wife's death was no accident. From college girl surrogate to successful PI, Adeline has done a lot of growing up. When she and Jeremy are faced with a race against time to save their son, more than just romantic sparks will fly.
As others already stated, this was a confusing read. I had a hard time following with the who & what and gave up a few chapters in. I also hate romance stories in which there is an ex. The fact that H spent most of the book constantly thinking of his wife, I couldn't route for the romance playing out.
Mission: Colton Justice is an all around good book. I was intrigued with the storyline. I was drawn in with the characters.
The chemistry between the characters felt incredibly real. The storyline kept me on edge and demanding more. It took me a little bit to get through, but once I did wanted to find more from this author. This story is all around unique and engaging.
An action packed romance. When Adeline served as Tess & Jeremy's surrogate, she fell in love not only with the baby, but with Jeremy. When Tess was in an accident 2 years later, Jeremy contacts Adeline to look for Tess's murderer. Feelings re-appear on both sides. But when Jamie, their son, is kidnapped, how far will the two parents go to get him back, and what happens between them when they do?
A unique story and it stirs your heart. You see it there but they try to respect Tess but fortunately Love wins in there lives! And it's so awesome how it's technically their son anyways
