WILLIE Good bye Father.
FATHER DYER I hope to see you again soon.
WILLIE I hope so too.
The car stops and we hear Chris call. Father Dyer!

[The film remains controversial to this day. Some find it frightening. A friend told me she didn’t because she didn’t believe in the phenomenon. Others despise anything to do with exorcism from whatever religion, group or individual because they feel it can be abusive. Others believe in possession and exorcism and that exorcism can be properly conducted and supervised. This is one of those films that will never go away. Blatty, who wrote the novel, also wrote the screenplay, which is likely why the movie adheres so closely to the book.]
This is a re-read for me. And quite possibly the only time I've felt that both a book and its movie adaptation were outstanding in equal measure. The movie paints a searing visual image of demonic possession while the book gives us a very intimate view of the minds of the main characters. Especially Father Damien Karras.
What struck me during this re-read was that my most lasting memory of the movie was Father Merrin. And yet, in the book, he only occupies about 20% of the story. Even so, the way Blatty writes him in the book is just phenomenal. He is like the rejuvenating Spring descending on a harsh Winter season. A reminder that evil will never prevail in the end.
