I was unaware of the religious nature of the book which I believe takes away from the value of the overall story line. The story in & of itself wasn’t a stand alone. There are too many call backs to previous books & without being aware of them took me completely out of the loop trying to figure out what was going on in the current story. It would’ve been interesting I believe had it not been for those things but with them it was subpar at best.

Although one Sugar Creek Gang book is much like another, they're consistently uplifting children's stories filled with genuine childhood struggles and upraising morals. Basically, the fun parts of The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, without the linguistic struggle and racism. Although to be fair, the 1995 Disney movie Tom and Huck ruined me for the actual novels, so The Adventures of Huck Finn & Tom Sawyer may actually be more enjoyable than I think.
